Chapter 3: The Song-Wind City

Apr 30, 2025 12:28 pm
It is late in the afternoon when the river takes a wide bend to the south. The jungle has become less dense over the past few hours, and now, up ahead, you can see a sprawling city on the shores ahead of you. The vast city is largely laid out in a circular pattern, with canals crisscrossing it. A few districts sit to the west of the central city, along with several docks that bustle with activity, ships of all shapes and sizes coming and going.

Some of the buildings of the central district stretch to dizzying heights. Even at this distance, you can hear the musical tinkling sound of thousands of glass charms that seem to adorn every window and door. This is Nantambu, the Song-Wind City! You've finally arrived!

"Finally, civilization at last!" Novac was in awe, and all the sights and sounds, even from a distance, triggered a sensory overload. He had the urge to jump into the water and swim ahead of the raft.

Surprisingly, his first thoughts this time were not about returning home but rather about a hot bath, properly cooked food, and fresh clothes.

He looked at his new friends—yes, he did consider them friends now. You don't go through hell, fight wild animals and weird monsters together, and not become friends, even though he knew little of them yet.
"We made it! We survived the jungle! We've returned to civilization!"
May 1, 2025 1:09 am
Dalton smiled at the sight of the city. He had never been that fond of cities, but after days in the jungle, he was happy to see anyplace with a few less things trying to eat them.

"Wow... I can't say I've ever been happy to see a city before."

The place seemed to have a magic about it.

"Let's get the raft safely to shore, then we can explore. Looking forward to sleeping in a real bed."
May 1, 2025 1:19 pm
Al stared with wonder at the view of the city, taking in the sights, sounds and smells. As he took a deep breath, he realized his body was tense and sore, perhaps from stress throughout their journey here. His head on a swivel, he rests his eyes on the people with him on the raft.

"I’m grateful I don’t have to do this alone"

"This city is incredible … almost made it worth the journey here. In any case, let’s make sure to stick together. You’re the only ones I trust right now."
May 1, 2025 3:10 pm
Novac looked at Al. "Don't worry, my friend. We came here together, and we will leave together. Let's clean up and get some food, and then let's find a way home." Novac smiled; he was looking forward to all of that. "Okay, let's get this raft out of the water."

"Hell yes! We actually made it!"

AJ was almost jumping with joy, slapping each of her companions on the back and sharing in Novac's exhilaration. Eyes filled with wonder, she watched as they floated closer with awe. The ringing of the chimes contributed to a multi-sensory experience that gave her chills.

"It's so beautiful. And so surreal... I feel guilty. I know I need to get back home, but I also want to explore this place and just experience it. I've never seen anything so fantastical. Y'know, I never even left the United States before this? Or even seen the ocean? And now I see this. It's hard to want to look away."
May 1, 2025 11:38 pm
"I am sure we will be able to explore. First, we have to find the place and the people we need to talk to, and I am sure they will need time to prepare to send us back."

Despite himself, Novac was intrigued by the city ahead of him. He wanted to go home, but now that the dangers of the jungle were behind them, he did want to have a look around. Maybe even get some souvenirs of his time here.
May 2, 2025 11:27 am
Dalton worked with the others to pull the raft to shore. He was relieved to be out of the jungle, was excited to see the unusual city, and looking forward to a chance to leave this place. But Dalton was a pessimist by nature. He often joked at the question of 'Is your glass half empty or half full?'. Dalton's glass was broken on the floor and he had cut himself on the broken glass. Things in life had usually been better than that, except maybe being sucked into the jungle and constantly attacked by things. Still, it always tempered his outlook and he never really believed anything would truly happen, until it actually happened.

Everyone else was excited to go home, but would it be that simple, he doubted it.

"I agree. We can look around as we go in, but we should find the people who could help us."
May 2, 2025 12:17 pm
You pull your raft ashore as you make your way along the docks on the outskirts of the city. Shuttles run between portage points north and south along the river while fishers cast nets and haul in their catch. The docks are also where merchants without a permanent stall in the city's main bazaar sell their wares, often right from the boat they arrived on. The smells of rich spices and rare woods fill the air, along with the tasty aromas of meat and baked goods.

Before you have gotten very far, a young human boy with dark skin, unruly hair, and colorful clothes approaches you. "Hello! Welcome to Nantambu! Forgive me, but you look like you've had a rough journey to get here. Are you looking for a place to stay? Maybe a bathhouse to get clean, or the best shops to purchase new clothing? I'd be happy to be your guide to the city, for just a trio of copper pieces!" The boy grins and holds out his hand expectantly.
May 2, 2025 1:38 pm
Seduced by the scent of spices and foods, AJ's mouth started to water. The provisions they've been eating on were enough to keep going, but nothing luxurious. Even more than before, she felt the strong desire to indulge and relax, at least for a time. The approach of the boy set off internal alarm bells, however. Is this a scam? We don't look like tourists though. Hell, if a kid needs to scam to get by in this city, then I don't feel bad about it anyway.

"All of that sounds great, but we also need to know where the magic school is. I wanna say it was called Magaambya? Could you show us where that is too?"

After reaching into her coin purse, the oracle of fire offered a silver piece and a smile.

"All of that and what she said," Novac said, smiling at the boy.
Novac quickly checked if his money pouch was still there, and then subtly he put it inside his shirt pocket where he could feel it and the boy couldn't reach it. It was empty enough not to leave a bulge.
He smiled at his memory of when, as a kid, they worked in groups: one or two distracted the tourist while the others emptied their pockets. Fond memories indeed. He was always the distraction...

As the party walked together, Al studied the boy.

"Hmm, I guess even here everybody has their own hustle."

"They call me Al. Tell me, is the journey here always so … rough?
May 5, 2025 12:44 pm
Despite his suspicions, Novac doesn't think this kid has any nefarious plans.

The boy's eyes light up when AJ offers him a silver piece. He quickly pockets it before she can change her mind. "The Magaambya, yes! Right this way!"

When Al asks about the journey being rough, the boy shrugs. "If you come through the jungle, yeah. Especially lately, with all the beasts riled up from the Godsrain. The folks who come here through the river or the roads usually arrive none the worse for wear, though. You may want to try that next time!"

He leads you along roads and bridges over the canals towards the main part of the city. Along the way, you pass by several open-air markets and shops. Glassmakers and cloth merchants display a riotous array of colors and designs. Street musicians and performers busk in courtyards located conveniently near food carts. Charms and chimes seem to hang from every window, and temples of all sizes dot Nantambu's streets.

The majority of people you see here seem to be humans, but you also spot some Ekujae like those you met in the jungle. There are also some short humanoids who stand barely three feet tall, as well as furry hyenalike people, scaly lizardlike folk, and even a few beings that look like a cross between humans and cats!

At the very center of the city stands the Magaambya. The magic school has a beautiful campus with massive mosaics of warrior-mages with animal masks overlooking the school’s terraced gardens and the surrounding city. Ten buildings are arranged in a circular fashion around a central garden, with various smaller buildings around the outskirts.

"Here we are! The Magaambya!" your guide says with a grin.
May 5, 2025 3:47 pm
Though captivated by the breathtaking sights, Novac tried to memorize the labyrinthine streets, mentally sketching a map of the city. Upon arriving at the school, he addressed their guide, "Thank you for guiding us here. May I ask your name? I wouldn't want to be impolite by simply calling you "boy"."
His gaze swept over the school's intricate art and grand architecture. "Right then," he said to nobody in particular, starting towards the nearest building, "time to locate the administration office." He scanned the structures for any identifying signs to guide his way.
May 5, 2025 4:06 pm
Making note of landmarks as they traveled was hard, but AJ tried her best. Getting swept away into what seemed like a fairy tale of a land was a distraction that relentlessly barraged all of her senses. The adrenaline and awe from the experience felt like she was vibrating. I've never even had a dream that could compare to the fantasy of this.

"This is beautiful... Is just anyone allowed to go there? We need to see people who know a lot about magic. Also yeah, what's your name, kiddo?"

Dalton typically hated cities, but he had to admit that this one had a lot of charm. Perhaps that was the way of cities in dreams or magical realms. "Certainly beats that dull grey castle in Harry Potter."

He glanced at AJ's comment about who could go there. "You thinking about enrolling? You certainly have the magic, but seems you already use it pretty well." he smiled at thought, but knew that none of them were planning on staying.
May 6, 2025 9:45 am
"I'm Ikeno," the boy says, pointing to himself.

"Most of the new students who enroll here have a sponsorship from somebody already affiliated with the school, but they've been known to accept people who don't have a sponsorship, too. If you want to become a student, I guess it doesn't hurt to ask!"
May 6, 2025 11:30 am
Al was nearly filled to the brim with wonder of the things they’ve seen on their travel through the city.

His eyes wide, he leaned forward to speak to his party discreetly.

"I swear, it’s just like an elder scrolls game. Hopefully there’s no dragons flying around."
May 6, 2025 12:01 pm
Dalton glanced up at the sky, "Well, if it is Skyrim, we are all screwed, but I haven't seen any vikings running around. With everything we have seen so far, I cannot say it would be impossible."
May 6, 2025 2:02 pm
"Huh? Oh, no, I was just asking in case it was restricted. You know, like if only a certain class of people or people with certain documentation were allowed in. If it was like that, it would mean trouble for us getting the help we need to get back home. But I guess if we end up stuck here for the foreseeable future, then I'd definitely be interested. It's magic. That's awesome."

Hearing the mention of Elder Scrolls, AJ vividly recalled the many times joining the Mage's Guild and College of Winterhold. The sight of the Magaambya began to intermingle with a deep nostalgia. Her mind began to wander. I don't think I'll be hailing Sithis so much in reality. Or bargaining with demonic deities.

"Thanks, Ikeno. Hmm, do you have any advice for places to avoid in this city? Is there anywhere known to have a lot crime or bad stuff going on? We don't want to accidentally walk into any trouble while we're here."
May 6, 2025 3:27 pm
Novac, who had never played video games, felt lost during the conversation, so he thanked Ikeno for his help and started walking towards the buildings. He decided he would ask the first person he met for directions to the administration office and go from there.
May 7, 2025 12:51 pm
"Nantambu was built to be one big community," Ikeno says with a smile. "Even the poorest citizen here has access to food, clean water, and a safe place to sleep. That goes a long way towards keeping crime down. But there are still a few bad eggs, especially around the outskirts of the city. Stay away from there and you should be just fine!"

The student Novac talks to directs him to the Heron Archives, one of the ten large buildings that ring the center of the campus. From there, further inquiries lead you to an office at the top floor that belongs to one of the school's teachers by the name of Takulu Ot. Takulu is an average-looking man with a friendly smile. He wears clothing with crisp patterns and happy colors, and a wooden staff leans against the wall behind his desk. The desk itself is adorned with small trinkets in the shape of anteaters.

"Welcome to the Magaambya," Takulu says with a smile. "Are you prospective candidates for study here? We are always looking for talented and dedicated individuals who wish to further their studies and who are willing to give back to the community."

"Everyone here gets their needs met? Damn, I didn't expect Golarion to do better than our world in that regard. Avoiding the outskirts sounds like good advice though."

Does Ikeno actually have a nuanced understanding of the city's socioeconomic climate though? It feels too good to be true.
AJ follows Novac along with the others, eager to see more of the magic school. Everything was moving so fast, but it seemed every room made her want to pause and stare. The desire to not get left behind won out until they finally found an educator with the role they were looking for. Still, she somehow managed to be distracted by the anteater trinkets on the desk. What a weird animal to be your favorite. Although Novac had been leading the charge thus far, AJ cleared her throat and seized the initiative.

"We all got randomly teleported to Golarion from our home world through weird portals that the Ekujae call aiudara. They said y'all might know how we can get back home."

She eagerly awaited his reaction.
May 7, 2025 5:37 pm
Takulu's eyebrows raise. "Another world, you say? Which one is your home? Castrovel? Akiton? Surely not Aucturn, I hope!" He chuckles.
May 7, 2025 7:02 pm
Having struggled to find the best way to explain their situation, Novac was surprised by AJ's direct approach and even more so by Takulu's matter-of-fact response. "We come from another plane of existence – different from yours, yet alike in some ways. The important thing is, we don't belong here and desperately want to return to our own world. Since it seems a magical occurrence brought us here, we would greatly appreciate your help in getting back." Novac was a little winded after speaking, but he hoped his message was clear.
May 7, 2025 10:14 pm
Dalton heard the man rattle off some other worlds. "Wait, are those all other worlds people have come from? We call our world Earth and although similar, it is a vastly different place than here."
May 8, 2025 10:35 am
"Well, you certainly came to right place as far as magical phenomena are concerned. I think looking into the circumstances of your arrival here and a possible way to return to from whence you came would be a worthy project of the Magaambya's staff and students," Takulu says to Novac.

He turns to Dalton and nods. "Those are a few of the planets we can see in Golarion's night sky. Through powerful magic, some of us have been able to visit those worlds, and some natives from those worlds have come to our planet as well. Earth, you say? That is a strange name for a planet! But to each their own, I suppose," he chuckles.
May 8, 2025 11:49 am
Trying his best to sound formal, Al nods his head in acknowledgment to Takulu.

"Admittedly, we aren’t well versed in the magic of the aiudara, so your help would be much appreciated. That being said, have you personally ever encountered a situation like ours?"
May 8, 2025 11:58 am
Dalton is someone heartened to hear that they have magic to travel to other worlds. "Yes, we are confused as to how and why we ended up here to start with. Four strangers from different parts of our world all ending up here."

"The other part - we are not in the same bodies we left in. All of us are changed into something else, with skills we do not normally have."
May 8, 2025 12:15 pm
"Personally? No, I have not," Takulu says, shaking his head. "Both translocation and transformation? That is mighty magic, indeed. In my humble opinion, it suggests the hand of the divine may be involved. I wonder if your arrival here is related to the Godsrain in some way. Have you heard of the Godsrain?"
May 8, 2025 2:30 pm
"We don't have any planets in our night sky, just a moon. All of the planets in our solar system are uninhabited except for ours. We also don't have magic. Or gods that you can actually verify exist, which it seems like this world does? We also don't have so many different people, just humans. Which by the way, I was just a regular human without magic before I got transported here. Is all of this making sense? It doesn't feel like we hopped from one planet to another via teleportation as much as it feels like we got thrown into a whole different reality."

AJ clarified, feeling that there might be some miscommunication after the mention of planets around Golarion. After taking a breath, she continued.

"One of the Ekujae, Nketiah, told us about the Godsrain. The god of war was killed and shattered, raining down all over the world, right? And now there's some big power vacuum with tons of people vying for the former god's power? It's pretty crazy. Do you think that event was really enough to breach whatever separates our universe from yours in... this multiverse, I guess?"

Every word out of her mouth made her feel more confused and doubtful than the last. What am I saying? Actually, does any of this even matter? Or change anything? Do the people here know the origin of the universe or do they question it too? I'm thinking too much...

Novac couldn't grasp the relevance of their current conversation. So far, all they'd gathered was that they were supposedly in the right location, yet the theological debate about gods remained incomprehensible.

"Mr. Takulu," Novac began, his tone direct but polite, "you indicated that we've arrived at the correct place. However, we haven't yet discussed the specifics of how you might be able to facilitate our return home. I apologize if I'm being too straightforward, but could you please direct us to the individuals within your institution who possess the most knowledge regarding this matter?"

Novac hoped his directness hadn't offended their host, but his patience for religious discussions was nonexistent – a trait perhaps stemming from his upbringing in a criminal household.
May 8, 2025 6:34 pm
Takulu smiles at AJ’s theorizing. "It is certainly possible! Until it can be proven otherwise, I wouldn’t rule it out."

He turns to Novac, his smile unchanged. "Well, to tell the truth, the wisest and most learned among the Magaambya is our founder and headmaster, Old-Mage Jatembe. If anybody will know how to help you, it will be him. Unfortunately, Jatembe is currently away on a matter of great import. I don’t know how long it will be until he returns. Weeks, likely. Months, maybe?

"But do not fret! In the meantime, I will do what I can to accommodate you. Perhaps you’d like to sit in on some classes to learn more about Golarion and our magic? Or at the very least, I can arrange accommodations for you in the city. There is plenty to do and see in Nantambu, and I can assure you, you will not be bored while you wait!"
May 8, 2025 8:04 pm
Novac's face drained of color. "Weeks? Months, you say! Surely there must be another way?" His knees gave way, forcing him to sit down. "Might as well stay here then," he muttered under his breath. "If I'm gone that long, the sentence will be even longer, perhaps a stint in high security." He whispered the last part, then looked at Takulu, his eyes filled with pleading. "Isn't there a second wise teacher, or perhaps an assistant?"

Dalton was keeping up with the discussion. Thankfully Takulu seemed very willing and eager to help them and things were sounding hopeful. Then came the comment about months before even talking to the man who might be able to help them.

He watched Novac, worried about his new friend. Dalton disappearing for months, his kids were grown, some traveling the world. Surely he might be missed, but there was no one who would not be able to go on without him. No one relying on him solely for support. No punishment for himself if he returned 6 months later. He wanted to comfort Novac, but he had nothing to offer him. Takulu and the school was their only hope of returning and that may take months.

To Takulu, "We greatly appreciate any and all the help you are willing to give us. Let us know if there is anyway we could help, especially if it would speed up finding a way home. "
May 9, 2025 2:50 am
Al was pondering the remark Takulu had made about the influence of the divine when he heard how long they’d have to wait for help. He sympathized with Novac’s reaction, knowing he had people back home waiting for him.

"Shit … this keeps getting worse. What would a god want from me?"

Al stammered as he spoke up.

"Novac’s got a point! Takulu, could there be anyone else with knowledge of either the Godsrain or the aiudara?"
May 9, 2025 7:15 am
Takulu leans back in his chair. "I suppose there is somebody else who can get started on your plight before Old-Mage Jatembe's return. Teacher Lesedi's area of specialty is extraplanar portals and beings. I believe she is familiar with the aiudara network.

"As for the Godsrain itself, many of our students and staff are in the midst of studying its effects and aftermath, but this is no easy task. The shards of Gorum have created powerful monsters, supernatural environments, and other strange phenomena, so even approaching any of his remnants, let alone obtaining a sample for study, have been harrowing. I'm afraid we just don't know enough about it yet to offer any solid leads in that regard."
May 9, 2025 3:54 pm
"Thank you, Takula. Could you please tell us where we might find Teacher Lesedi?" Novac asked weakly. Even if Teacher Lesedi could help them get started, they would still need to wait for the Mage's return. "I suppose we'll need a place to stay too. Could you recommend an establishment? We've been traveling through the jungle for quite some time, and I would really appreciate the chance to clean up."
May 9, 2025 5:35 pm
AJ glanced over at Novac after bluntly questioning Takulu, struggling to contain her frustration with only her eyebrows. He obviously just hasn't gotten to that part yet. However, the teacher's response made it clear that he wasn't the person who could help them after all. Oh. Her inner monologue went silent as she tried to process what was said. Vague imaginings of what months within Nantambu might look like drifted across the surface of her mind. Anxiety about what this meant for their home reality squeezed her gut. The immediate crumbling of the rogue caught her glance, but she did little more than stare, expressionless. She listened to the others, unable to say anything while stuck within the internal sanctuary of her mind. It was Takulu's next words that finally managed to provide some fuel to spark a reaction from her.

"God shards. Powerful monsters. Supernatural environments. If it was the Godsrain that brought us here, then it will be another that lets us leave. It sounds a lot like to me we should use these powers that were thrusted upon us by something or someone to keep getting stronger until we can punch a hole through the fabric of reality to get back. We just have to put Gorum back together so we can kill him ourselves."

Delusions of grandeur and a god complex were a nostalgic coping mechanism in response to trauma. It had been over a decade since relying on it, but it was easy to fall into old habits when reality thrusted self-actualizing power upon her. The look in her eyes was a delightful mixture of determination and unhinged emotion.

Dalton was not sure that what AJ said was possible, but with everything they had seen, his definition of what was possible was changing all the time.

"Pretty sure putting Humpty Dumpty back together is not an option. Although you have a point. This Godsrain is the broken parts of a god... if some kind of divine power brought us here, then maybe the one of these parts would be the key to getting us out of here."
May 10, 2025 12:26 am
Novac looked at AJ and Dalton with wide eyes. "Have you gone completely mad? We were almost killed by a plant monster, barely survived actually, and now you think you can take on gods?" Novac shook his head in disbelief. "You really want to die here. Whatever 'here' is."
May 12, 2025 11:05 am
Al’s eyes darted nervously between his group as the implications of AJ’s and Dalton’s words seeped into his thoughts.

Let’s not be too hasty … even if our theories about the Godsrain are true, we’re nowhere near strong enough to tackle that. For now, let’s just see what Teacher Lesedi has to say and we’ll go from there.
May 12, 2025 1:07 pm
Takulu gives you directions to Lesedi's office, but she isn't there when you arrive. Asking around reveals she is currently mentoring one of her students in a nearby building. When you arrive at the indicated building, you can see a large chamber, the center of which has been cleared away to make room for a circle of arcane runes inscribed on the floor. The runes are glowing with red-orange light, illuminating the otherwise dimly-lit chamber.

Teacher Lesedi stands outside the circle, alongside her student. Lesedi herself resembles the Ekujae of the jungle, but her skin tone is a lighter brown, with patches of even paler skin across her face and bae arms. He long hair is white, and her orange eyes glow with flecks of red. She is diminutive, barely standing five feet tall, the dainty pink robes she wears are incongruous with the necklace of wicked-looking bones around her neck.

Her student is a young human woman wearing colorful clothes and a soft red hat atop her braids. Her face is locked in concentration as her fingers move in arcane patterns. Within the glowing circle, a rift hangs in the air, through which a fiery landscape of obsidian landmasses within a lake of bubbling lava can be seen.

"Good work, Meitama," Lesedi says. "Keep your focus. Concentrate... concentrate...!"

The hair on the back of AJ's neck stands up. She gets the feeling something bad is about to happen. The pale woman catches on fire as she calls out a warning a mere moment before Meitama's nose twitches and her eyes start to water. "N-no, I... I can't hold it... ah, ACHOO!" She lets forth a mighty sneeze, and the rift suddenly roars with a burst of flame.

"Meitama!" Lesedi shouts, raising her hand which is already beginning to glow with golden light. But it's too late, as the rift in reality belches forth more fire and four creatures fly out! The creatures resemble two-foot-tall fiery bats with big bulging eyes and toothy grins. They cackle and cavort before orienting on AJ and her flames!

Lesedi whirls, taking you in for the first time. "Hi, there! Could you lend a hand? Take care of these scamps while we seal the rift!" She turns back to the fiery tear in reality as the scamps swoop towards you!

Wow, that's a lot of dice! Rolling my Reflex saves? Alright, nice rolls! I believe that's 2 and 1 damage now.
A contortion of confused amusement gripped AJ's eyebrows after Novac had questioned her.

"Gone completely mad? Who talks like that? You sound like you're starting to fit in here too, man. Obviously I'm not saying we go do it now. We just gotta have like a long training arc and get stronger. Reach into the depths of these powers and skills we've all got. We got transported into another universe, dude. There's no limits any more. Fuck it."

She dropped it there to trail off in the directions Takulu provided. It's not crazy to meet the expectations of crazy land. Throw me in a fantasy world and I'm gonna be a fantasy person. Otherwise you really will lose it.
Her eyes drank in the scene before them as they finally found Teacher Lessedi. An instinctual part of her had her eyes linger on the runes, trying to parse them. The teacher's outfit is cute. Heat began to build inside of the pyromancer as the hairs on her neck stood up. Adrenaline and a sense of alarm. With no time to process the new sixth sense within her, AJ shouted out to the others as flame erupted from her. This power had been hot before, but this wasn't just heat any more. It burned. It wasn't stopping. She screamed, instinctually. The sound carried the force to shatter bodies and glass, let alone ears. Unsure of what was happening any more, all she could do was glare at the creatures that must have caused this.

As Al took the brunt of some hits from the scamps, he noticed a flicker of flames in his peripheral vision. He turned just in time to see AJ mouth a scream, and covered his ears just as the sound wave blasted around them. However, as he turned back to face the scamps, he was met with a blast of flames which caused him to stagger back.

As he wearily planned his next move, he noticed that Novac had been hurt by the sonic scream. Amidst the flame and smoke, it was almost too chaotic for Al to keep track of.

"Focus Al, focus."

Three of the four creatures resists AJ’s sonic blast, but the fourth one catches the full brunt of it, spiraling out of the air and crashing hard into the floor, where it lies still. Dalton channels his ki and strikes out in a flurry of blows. His first strike takes down the wounded scamp that was attacking Novac, so he quickly whirls to deliver another punishing blow to Al’s assailant, dropping it as well. With only one foe left, Novac moves up and quickly stabs it twice, causing it to go down. Al’s healing magic washes over the group.

With the enemies vanquished, it only takes Lesedi and Meitama a few more seconds to fully close the fiery gate. Lesedi sighs with relief. "A sneeze this time, Meitama?" she asks with a quirked eyebrow.

Meitama throws up her hands. "It’s not my fault, Teacher! Things like this just keep happening. I swear, I’m a chaos magnet."

Lesedi shakes her head and turns back to you. "Thanks for your help. You all okay?"

Novac turned to Lesedi as he gathered his throwing knives. "We'll survive this. Honestly, I'm starting to get used to being attacked and bleeding everywhere." He glanced at AJ. "What in the world was that, AJ? Your scream was more painful than those firebat things! A little heads-up next time, perhaps?" Regaining his composure, he faced Lesedi again. "We came to you seeking assistance." Novac then gave her a summary of their situation.

With the creatures dead, no other obvious explanation was present for the searing flames that still wracked AJ's body. Her hands moved over herself, trying desperately to manipulate the flames with the control she thought she had had. The pain faded as the fire coalesced in her hands, condensing and shifting against her desire to contain it. Finally, she started to calm, but had to remain vigilant. Staring into the diminutive blaze in her grasp, its will was palpable. A physical manifestation of her desire to rage, scream, and impose herself on the world as loudest as she possibly could. It needed to be brought under control.

"I was literally on fire. I panicked. It wasn't intentional. I need some time or I'm going to burn again."

The woman simply stood there, cradling the ember as it shrank more and more. It wouldn't be until about 10 minutes later that it would finally disappear.

"Do you often spontaneously combust, or is this a new thing?" Lesedi asks curiously, regarding AJ with her head cocked.

Meitama blows a raspberry. "Oh, I've been there before," she remarks acerbically.

Lesedi gives her a look. Meitama gives a hasty bow and mumbles something about homework before scurrying off. The petite elf turns back to Novac and listens attentively to his summary of the situation.

"How fascinating! Well, you definitely came to the right person here. So, you're trying to get back to your home world, yes? The first step, I think, would be to closely examine your auras to see if I can trace the position of that world in our Universe. It sounds like at the very least it is in a star system far removed from our own, but I've no doubt it exists somewhere out there in the vast and silent void!" Lesedi says with a grin. "Do you consent to an aura exam?"

Al glanced at the bodies of the scamps on the floor.

Um.. if it goes better than whatever your student was trying, then I’ll consent.

Not knowing what to do, he holds his arms outstretched, awkwardly standing in place while awaiting further instruction.

Lesedi, I’m Al. Not sure if this is relevant, but I’m a human. At least I was, until we arrived to this world.

In his 'normal' past life, the mere mention of aura reading would have sent him packing. It was one of his mother's later scams, a completely legal way for her to make a buck. He last saw her fully embracing her "gypsy" persona, raking in cash from naive rich folks. But here... well, he'd just tangled with fire bats, so his perspective was a little skewed. "Alright, Lesedi, go ahead and read my aura. You should also know that for most of us, it's not just our looks that have changed; we've also picked up some new abilities or knowledge. Two of us even got magic." He gestured towards Dalton. "He's a beast in a fistfight, and me... well, I got off easy in the transformation department. But I know exactly where to hit to cause maximum pain, and I'm getting the hang of weapons. Never in my past life did I ever physically hurt anyone... at least, not intentionally."
May 16, 2025 7:57 pm
"I have never caught fire before, no. Neither in this world or the other one. Just then, it was like I could feel something bad was about to happen. Like I could feel the fight coming. And the fire was burning to be let out for it. Anyway, yeah I totally consent to the aura thingy. Anything that can help and give us more information here would be great."

All the while explaining, AJ focused on caring for the flame in her grasp. Briefly, she glanced over at Meitama, wondering what similarities the two might have.
May 16, 2025 11:13 pm
Dalton looked around at the downed enemies. "There have been a surprising number of things trying to eat us recently."

"Go ahead and do what you need to try to help find home."

He wondered how far away home might be.
May 19, 2025 10:45 am
Lesedi looks at the remains of the fallen fire creatures, which have crumbled to ash. "Oh, I don't think those fire scamps were trying to eat you! Just burn you for fun!" She collects some of the ashes into empty glass vials and stores them in her pouch. "Good spell components," she explains.

The petite elf then you leads you to an adjoining building where her office is located, decorated in various shades of pink, of course. Once there, she bids you to stand still as she casts her spell. Her orange eyes seem to glow brightly as she waves her hands before each of you in turn. You can feel a subtle thrumming of the air around you.

"Hmm, yes I see. Your auras are strong, ripe with potential. I can see the energies of your home world around you still, but they are merged with this world's. And I can feel the power of divinity that has touched you. It is colored in brown and gray. I see... two faces in profile... Oh, interesting..."

Lesedi puts her hands down, and the magical energies dissipate. She smiles up at you. "I think I know who brought you here," she says with a singsong tone. "A goddess called Alseta, the Welcomer. Alseta holds sway over transitions. Physical transitions through doorways and portals or over thresholds, metaphorical transitions, and even the forward flow of time—Alseta influences them all. And some elves associate her with the aiduara, the gates such as the one through which you arrived here. She must have brought you to our world for a purpose. Maybe if we can find that purpose, we can help you fulfill it and allow you to make your way back home!"
May 19, 2025 4:52 pm
Novac's first reaction was disbelief and doubt, followed by anger and frustration, but eventually gave way to resignation. "Sure! Why not!" he thought. "Of course there was a god involved. After all, they had landed in fairytale land." He chuckled, thinking about how AJ might feel just now. After all, the magic fire stuff had gone to her head, and she was already ready to fight gods and whatnot. After a while, he felt calm enough to talk. "Thank you for the reading, Lesedi. Would you by any chance know why we were 'chosen'? Also, would you be able to tell us what the goddess would want us to accomplish?" He couldn't believe his own words. Why would he even consider this tale to be true? But what else could he do? Just play along, do what is needed, and get home.
May 19, 2025 5:15 pm
Just burn us for fun? Relatable, I suppose. Calmed down after the necessary meditation to cage the flame, AJ followed after Lesedi. Hmm, cute office. Too much pink for my tastes though. The mention of strong auras and potential evoked a burning anticipation to seize the capabilities this world had to offer. Confirmation that this was the work of a goddess wasn't much surprise to her at this point. However, she couldn't help but throw eyebrows up at the domain of 'transitions'.

"A literal goddess of another universe transitioned me- us. That would certainly explain some things. Well, I don't imagine this kind of thing happens for any small reason. We've probably got some big mission to do here. Based on the timing of it, it probably has to do with this Godsrain and the time of strife, as everybody keeps reminding us. It's a scramble to seize the power left behind by the god of war. Alseta is divinity, so she has a stake in it. We're probably expected to be her agents in some form or another."

"Oh - burned for fun - well I suppose it is nice to have some variety." the sarcasm was very obvious.

"Why kidnap people from another world... has to be plenty of more talented people in this one."

Dalton looked at Lesedi for a moment. "I noticed that you did not mention being able to send us home - only that if we figure out what task this goddess recruited us for that maybe then there might be a way home. Basically - we are forced to do what this unknown being wants us to do until it is finished."
May 20, 2025 10:13 am
Lesedi gives Dalton a resigned nod. "Even the most powerful teleportation spell I'm aware of can only move people to other planets in the same solar system. I believe yours is in an entirely different galaxy! Barring discovering a ritual to open a gateway of immense power or another act of divine intervention, it looks like you might be stuck here for a while."

The elf shrugs. "The good news is that it doesn't seem like anybody's forcing you to do anything. You could probably go off and do anything you wanted here on Golarion. But it's my hypothesis that fulfilling the tasks that Alseta brought you here to accomplish is your best bet for getting home."

She looks to Novac. "I can't claim to guess as to Alseta's motives. The goddess's faith is not widespread here in the Mwangi Expanse. She is more of a Taldan goddess, and her main followers are on Avistan far to the north. I can see about sending messages to members of her clergy there. It may take some time, but perhaps one of her faithful will journey here to meet with you and she more light on the Welcomer's goals."
May 20, 2025 4:36 pm
Novac turns to his companions, "Okay, as I see it, we have a few options. We could either wait around and see if the goddess decides to send us a 'sign.' We could have Lesedi send a messenger and wait for their return with an answer, or we could go there and speak with the clerics ourselves. We could also wait months until the head professor returns. None of these are ideal, but they're all we have." He turns to Lesedi, "How long would a messenger to Avistan and back take?"
Last edited May 20, 2025 4:37 pm

"A few weeks, at least. The Welcomer’s faith is relatively small, and Avistan is quite far away. Even with magic, it will take time for an emissary to travel there, find the right person, and travel back."

"I suppose. But if you choose to stay here, I'd love to study you more! You know... for science?"
May 20, 2025 6:47 pm
"For science!"

It was hard not to give into the amusement of echoing that sentiment, and so she did. AJ giggled slightly before looking back to her companions.

"But seriously though, let's just stay here. The head professor will eventually return, we can wait for an envoy of the Welcomer from Avistan, and take this opportunity to come to grips with our current selves and abilities. I don't know about you guys, but I'm not eager to go on another trek where I catch the plague for several days. It was hell. I'd rather let those people come to us. We can get involved here in the meantime. I'm sure there's some heroics or something to get up to. And if that's not your thing..."

Her eyes glance over at Novac.

"You can always just pretend you're normal and do whatever it is you normally do, I guess."
May 20, 2025 8:57 pm
"Doing what I normally do?" Novac erupted in laughter, unable to contain himself. Tears streamed from his eyes as he struggled to regain composure. Finally, serious once more, he declared, "What I normally do wouldn't be tolerated here, and I highly doubt this world would just let me off with a slap on the wrist if I were caught." Turning to the group, Novac implored, "It's about saving time! We can't afford to dally. I've been gone too long already. We're nearing the point where staying in this world becomes our best option."
May 21, 2025 12:48 pm
Al’s mind was reeling, taking in the incredulity of receiving such momentous news while in a quaint office.

"What could a goddess want with us - with me?"

Not wanting to take a hard stance, Al raises his arms in exasperation.

"Listen, I tend to both agree and disagree. It’s true that staying here would be more safe, and potentially more useful in understanding our new selves.

At the same time, I don’t like being used as a pawn for some grand game of the all-powerful. It doesn’t usually end well for servants and champions of gods. My goal remains to get back to Earth as soon as we can."

He took a second to scan the room, a bit uncomfortable with the attention he drew to himself.

"Maybe there’s a middle road, it doesn’t have to be black and white. If we’re dealing with a long wait either way, maybe we can take some time to learn what’s facing us and perhaps get stronger through training. After a couple of weeks, either we power up or we can convince some locals to accompany us to meet the Welcomer’s faithful."
May 22, 2025 1:01 am
Novac turned to Lesedi. "It seems my magic-loving friends are set on staying. Would you mind sending a messenger to the Welcomers? Also, while you're busy experimenting with them, could you suggest an inexpensive place for us to stay? We're on a tight budget." He then looked at AJ and Al. "Once you two are finished with your scientific endeavors, come find me."
May 22, 2025 1:48 am
Dalton stood listening to the others. "I honestly do not know what we should do. If we go in search of the worshipers of this god, then we will not be here if other options turn up. If we wait here, we may spend months waiting while we do nothing."
May 22, 2025 12:01 pm
Furrowing and raising her eyebrows, AJ watched Novac uncomfortably while he laughed. Although she wasn't aware of how unhinged she may have came across while trying to fit in to this new world, she was deeply aware of the struggles the others seemed to be forecasting in trying to accept it. In particular, it still didn't make sense to her why Novac was so eager to return at all. Looking at the three of them, a sigh escaped her.

"Look, as far as I've been able to tell, this place looks and feels like the worlds that people have imagined since time immemorial. Maybe there's a reason for that. The existence of this place, to me, implies that there may have been a little bit of truth to anything that anyone imagined back home. There's a saying you may have heard of: When in Rome, do as the Romans do. We're in a fantasy world. Do what fantasy people do. Losing our collective shit and rushing around, pleading for people to send us back, doesn't seem like its gonna be enough to get us anywhere. Be adventurers. Train. Get stronger. Help people. Earn a reputation. The powers and skills we have make that possible. We can become people of influence. We won't just be helpless refugees, but people able to contribute to our own return. Or are you going to simply coast by waiting for someone to save you? Regardless of what reality you're in, when has that ever been something you can expect?"

The more she spoke, the more impassioned she became. It all seemed obvious to her the longer she'd been here, and the frustration with the others not getting it was becoming difficult to bear.

Novac looked sternly at AJ, unable to believe what he'd just heard. "Do you know the difference between a fantasy world and our own? In a game, pain isn't real! Diseases aren't real! And most importantly, death isn't real. But you couldn't tell the difference! Both Dalton and I were at death's door fighting that plant monster, and I can tell you, it felt pretty damn real." He took a deep breath to calm himself. "But you know what? You can stay here forever if you like it so much."
May 22, 2025 4:20 pm
"Wow. I was fucking sick too, but if that's how you're gonna act, don't fucking talk to me."

Just as AJ sensed the conversation had gone beyond the point of being rational to spiteful, she shut down and closed the door on the conversation herself. There wasn't even a moment's hesitation before she walked outside, seeking solitude and separation from Novac after his aggressive tongue-lashing. Making it out of the office and a good distance away, the woman pressed her back up against the wall and slid down. Why did I have to get sent here with that asshole? Why couldn't it have been Abbey? Then maybe I never would go back.

Caught off guard by the altercation between Novac and AJ, Al watched silently as AJ left the office.

Turning to Novac, Al sighed with resignation. As he thought of what to say, he absentmindedly began feeling the point of his tusks.

"Listen Novac … I’ll respect your wishes and won’t try to insist on a specific path we should all take. For what it’s worth, my instinct is agreeing with you completely. I’m honestly not sure why I’m hesitating even now to admit that.

To be honest, I’m afraid. We all suffered to get here and it seems like our problems are just beginning. But I meant what I said before about this group being the only ones I can trust. I’ll try and learn what I can about my new abilities, and you can bet I’ll use them towards getting us all home."

Al slicked back his hair, feeling the strangeness of his orcish ears.

"Professor Lesedi, how safe is this city? I wouldn’t want AJ to get into any trouble, especially not now."
May 23, 2025 10:21 am
"Nantambu is very safe. Any trouble your friend might get into would likely be of her own making," Lesedi says with a wry smile. But the smile quickly turns to an expression of concern. "But maybe one of you should talk to her? I can only imagine the stress you have been under lately. A sympathetic ear might go a long way towards easing the burden in her heart."
May 23, 2025 5:44 pm
Novac rolled his eyes, a silent acknowledgment that Lesendi's words were aimed squarely at him. With a weary sigh, he pushed himself to his feet. "I'll go find her and talk. It's my fault, after all." He exited the building, his steps leading him in the familiar "straight ahead" direction he always gravitated toward in unfamiliar places. After a short while, he spotted AJ leaning against a wall and moved to join her. At first Novac said nothing thinking about the right words before he finally began to speak.

"I'm what they call a cooperative repeat offender. Others might just say career criminal. I'm good at what I do, but I tend to brag, and that usually gets me caught. I'm fine with it, though. I spent the first two years of my life in prison; I was actually born in the prison hospital—it's on my birth certificate. When the police come knocking, I don't run, I don't fight, I don't yell. In prison, I behave, follow orders, and avoid conflict. That track record usually lands me in a minimum-security facility. I know the guards there, they know me, and that makes it bearable.

Now, this ‘God’ has pulled me out, making me a fugitive. The longer I'm gone, the worse it gets. I was in a high-security prison once, just for two weeks, I think, until weapon charges were dropped—a mix-up. A high-security prison is a completely different beast, and I have no desire to relive that experience. Right now, I don't even know if I want to go back. My choices are either returning and facing a long time in hell, or staying here and living through hell every day. Unlike you, I don't like what I've become. A killer."

He gestured to his Flyssa. "I know how to use these knives to inflict maximum pain. Before I came here, I never hurt anyone." He let out a heavy sigh. "The point is, I'm on edge, but I shouldn't have lashed out at you like that. We're in this together, and we need each other to survive. I am sorry "
May 27, 2025 1:52 pm
AJ glanced at Novac from the corner of her eye as he approached, but went back to staring off as he sat down. The lack of eye contact did not prevent her from taking in his words, however. The circumstances of his birth elicited a pair of raised eyebrows and another glance over at the self-proclaimed repeat offender. By the end of his explanation, she let her own sigh and prepared to speak her piece.

"Thanks, I appreciate the apology. We are gonna have to rely on more than just ourselves if we're ever gonna get back, so it makes sense that we stick together. For what it's worth, I don't think you're a killer just because you have those skills with a blade. It's how you use them that matters. I know there are some who would say that having them at all is wrong, but the world isn't black and white like we want to believe it is. It's gray as hell. Especially in this world we've ended up in. In our world, yeah, I don't think there's much of a place for someone with those kinds of skills. Or at least, there shouldn't be. But here, things are different. This world needs people like you."

She let that last point sit for a moment, conjuring up a light of flame in her hand.

"This world can give you the opportunity to carve a path for yourself that the other one never allowed. You don't have to be a killer. And I don't think this world has to be hell. Sure, it has some crazy dangerous shit, but there's still people who live regular lives here every day. They just might have some more magic in it. I still want to go back because my wife and my best friend are there, but honestly, I would probably prefer this one if I didn't have them. The world we come from is a dystopian clusterfuck. It's hard to feel like you can make a real difference. And maybe here isn't actually that much better, but I feel more free here than I ever did there. Not just to live my life however I want, but also to be whatever I want. Feel whatever I want. Back home, the world just made me want to burn shit down with how fucked up it was. Maybe that's why I actually can here. I don't know."

"I guess it all just goes to show how you and I must just see shit different. In your shoes, I'd see this place as a permanent pass out of jail. Knowing that I have to go back if I want to see my loved ones again, I think that's why I don't mind living large here while I have the chance. I'll never get the ability to have this kind of influence again, realistically. I'll never get the chance to be this version of myself again either. I'm not a woman over there. I actually get to be one here. The fucked up thing is that while you're unhappy being here, I'm unhappy that I have to leave."

Looking over at the unwilling rogue, she cocked a half smile and shrugged.

Dalton watched the two leave, but did not follow. They had some stuff to work out, maybe they all did really. He tried not to think about it too much. Dalton looked around for a place to sit while he waited for the others to hopefully return.

"Well if this is real and we are in another galaxy, I guess we solved that question of if there is life on other planets."
May 27, 2025 9:46 pm
It was Novac's turn to be surprised. With a cocky smile, he said, "So you were a guy! Well, that explains why you were so focused on your new looks." He then considered all AJ had shared. "I get why you're not eager to go back. Honestly, with all the waiting we'd have to do and our journey here, it might be too late for me to return without consequences. But we should at least try to get home. Besides, Lesedi said the goddess was also responsible for time. So she might be able to rewind to when she took us, and that, of course, would change things. Either way, I'm sorry, and I hope we can reconcile. What do you say?" Novac offered his hand. "Peace? Let's head back to the others."
May 28, 2025 7:24 am
Lesedi perks up at Dalton's words. "Oh! So, the people of your home world are knowledgeable about astronomy? Are you capable of spaceflight?"
May 28, 2025 10:48 am
"Didn't even think of time travel, but I guess anything is possible at this point. But yeah, peace."

AJ shakes Novac's hand before standing up and returning to the others.

"We're good."

Al was in the office with Lesedi and Dalton, worrying about Novac and AJ when Lesedi’s voice cut through his thoughts.

We have been to space, but only as far as our sole orbiting moon, and never with more than a handful of people.

What about this school? Is there an astrology department?
May 28, 2025 11:46 am
Dalton nodded, happy to have something simple to discuss instead of trying to anticipate their entire future. "Our world has no magic... well that may be wrong... I think it may be there, but we no longer have anyone who understands how to use it. Perhaps in our past."

"We are a world of science and machines. We have been to space, but in great machines that burn fuel in vast plumes of fire to hurl the craft into space."

"The person we first met here at the school mentioned other planets we might have come from. So there are other worlds in your system which you can use magic to travel to?"

Lesedi's orange eyes light up with excitement. "We have departments of both astrology and astronomy, yes. We have studied the cosmos and the movement of the planets. Magic exists that allows us to transport ourselves to other planets, but it is almost impossible to master and only a rare few have been able to use it. We have yet to master the magic or technology needed to actually explore the vastness of space! But there was an attempt at manned spaceflight nearly a century ago!

"The elven astronomer Gelviel Zorriah built a ship called the Lirgen's Glory and set off for the stars over a century ago. Oh, it was a glorious contraption! Almost two hundred feet long, with a solid stone hull and crystalline capacitors to store mystic energy. Its propulsion engine was fueled by amplified telekinetic magic!"

The petite professor lets out a wistful sigh. "Unfortunately, it was only a few years later that the Eye of Abendego formed, an immense perpetual storm that wiped out the nation of Lirgen. Contact with Lirgen's Glory was lost, and nothing has been heard from it or Gelviel since. We elves can live for centuries, though, so there's a chance that he and his crew are alive out there, somewhere in space. Maybe one day, we'll find them again..."

"Novac returns to hear the end of the speech, respectfully waiting until Lesendi is done. "Well, Lesendi," he says with a smile, "I think AJ and I have reconciled. Now, we might need a day or two to decide what to do. We just arrived from the jungle and came straight to you, so I for one would appreciate it if you could point us to a reasonably priced place where we can clean up and get some rest. Perhaps you could start your science experiments with them in the morning?"
May 30, 2025 10:43 am
"Of course. There's an inn not too far from campus called The Oxpecker's Perch. It is affordable, and the accommodations are comfortable. Go and rest up. When you're ready to start, you know where to find me."
May 30, 2025 1:57 pm
AJ got back to the others just in time to hear something about an entire nation being wiped out. Reconsidering how safe this place is in general... Well, there's always the threat of nuclear war back home, I suppose.

"Sounds good. I'd like to learn more about magic and stuff too, as we get the chance. These powers of mine are exciting and also kinda scary. I'd feel better the more I understood them, I think."
May 30, 2025 6:21 pm
"Thank you Lesendi we will be back after we had some rest" Novac they had a shower or a bathtub he really wanted to clean up and some sleep before facing more setbacks.
Jun 4, 2025 12:33 pm
You check into the Oxpecker's Rest, securing comfortable rooms in which to stay. After a hearty meal in the common room, you retire to your chambers to rest and reflect on everything you've learned today. Eventually, you settle down to sleep.

And in the warmth and stillness of the night, you dream...
AJ

You drift into sleep, the warmth of the hearth slowly giving way to a deeper, more primal heat. It's the kind of warmth that cradles your soul rather than your skin, and it draws you inward—into a dream that feels too vivid to be just a dream.

You stand in a vast open field, blanketed with flowers that shimmer like embers. The sky is a cascade of twilight hues—lavenders, golds, and burning crimsons. Everything breathes with color and warmth, as though the whole world is a living flame made gentle.

Then you feel it.

A presence—tender, powerful, vast. It doesn't announce itself with sound or flash, but rather, you feel seen, known, in a way that strips away every fear and pretense. You turn slowly and there they are. You instinctively feel their celestial power, and you somehow know their name.

Arshea.

Their form shimmers and shifts, like silk caught in sunlight. One moment masculine, the next feminine, then something wholly other, and then somehow... you. Standing before you, Arshea wears your face, your form, your dark hair spilling over pale shoulders like liquid night. They smile at you with your own mouth, warm and radiant.

"Beautiful, aren’t you?" they say, voice soft as velvet and rich with power. "It’s no wonder I chose to wear your shape tonight."

You stare, unsure, your heart suddenly fragile in your chest. Arshea’s eyes—your eyes, yet impossibly older, impossibly kind—glimmer with mirth and sorrow both. "You didn’t choose this form. You didn't ask to become her. But your soul did."

They step forward and take your hand, fingers warm with divine fire. "You were brought here not just by magic, AJ, but by meaning. You were becoming, even before Golarion called you. And now, you have the chance to become fully. You are not trapped. You are free."

The field around you blazes suddenly with light—not scorching, but exultant, joyous. You feel it in your chest, that fire of yours. The same fire that burns in your hands when you cast your spells, that courses through you in the heat of battle. But now it isn’t rage or danger. It’s affirmation.

"This body," Arshea whispers, touching your cheek with reverence, "is not a mistake. It’s a gift. A reflection of truths long buried, now given form. Do not fear your new shape. Explore it. Rejoice in it. Seek your desires—wherever they lead. Love whom you love. Live how you live. You are free."

A warmth swells in your chest, aching and glorious. You feel tears prick your eyes—not of sorrow, but release. For the first time, a corner of the confusion and fear uncoils and burns away.

Arshea smiles and their form shifts again, wings of molten gold unfurling behind them. "The world is fraying. Darkness rises, and the old ways grow brittle. But you, AJ, are change. Fire. You have been chosen not because you are perfect, but because you burn with potential. You will help set things right. Not by conforming, but by being fully, freely you."

They lean in and press a kiss to your forehead. It tingles like a sunbeam through glass. "My boon to you is this," they whisper. "When you doubt yourself, feel my flame. When the world tries to bind you, feel your fire break those chains. You are never alone. Not now. Not ever."

The field begins to fade, the flowers flickering out like dying sparks—but the warmth remains, burning in your chest.

You wake with the firelight flickering low beside you, and though you’re alone in your bed, your cheek is still warm from a kiss that couldn't have been real.

And yet, somehow, you know it was.
OOC:
You have gained Arshea's minor boon. Once, when you roll a failure on a Diplomacy check, you get a critical success instead. Arshea typically grants this boon only when the Diplomacy check would serve to increase love or offer a chance of redemption.

Al:

The night is deep and still, and the air is warm where your body rests on the bed. You slip into sleep easily, as though drawn downward into the quiet earth itself.

And then you are walking.

Bare feet press into soft loam, the scent of pine and leaf-mold thick in the air. You recognize the forest—it is every forest you’ve ever wandered, but older, quieter, truer. The trees seem to lean in as you pass, not menacing but watchful, wise. The hush here is complete, not silence, but reverence.

A crunch of leaves behind you makes you turn.

He stands tall among the trunks, weathered as old bark, with skin lined by time and hands calloused by honest labor. A longbow rests against his shoulder, and the elk-horn helm upon his brow glows faintly in the starlight. His eyes are sharp, the color of pine pitch, and they fix on you without flinching. You instinctively feel his divine power, and you know his name. Erastil.

"You came a long way to get lost, boy." His voice is rough-hewn, steady as split oak. He takes a step forward, the earth barely noticing his weight. "Or maybe you were already lost when the world pulled you here."

You swallow, heart tight. You feel the tusks in your mouth, the weight of your new body. Still unfamiliar. Still strange. You wait for judgment.

He snorts. "You think I care what shape your jaw is? What color your hide turned? If you think a pair of tusks makes you less, then you ain’t learned a damn thing about strength."

He stops just before you, taller than you'd imagined, smelling of campfires and river moss. "This world’s sick," he says. "It’s fraying at the edges. Too many people chasing power, forgetting the land, forgetting each other. I don’t need warlords or heroes in shining armor. I need keepers. People who’ll build, tend, stay."

His eyes scan you, and you feel your soul laid bare. "You didn’t ask to come here. And you sure as hell didn’t ask to be changed. But you’ve got the spark. You hear the trees. You feel the soil. That’s enough."

He reaches into his belt pouch and pulls out a seed—small, unremarkable, except that it pulses softly with warmth. He holds it out. "This is my boon. Keep it on your person. You'll share in my bounty, so long as you continue to work for it."

You reach for it. His rough fingers curl yours around it. "Take care of your kin. And I don’t just mean blood. Friends. Strays. The fool who can’t feed himself in winter. They’re yours now. That’s your calling." He pauses, studying you one last time. "Walk your path, Al. And walk it with pride."

Then the trees begin to fade, the light dimming to darkness—not cold, but restful, like a heavy quilt drawn over your thoughts. You wake with your hand clenched tight against your chest, and when you open it, there's nothing there.

But the weight of something promised still lingers.
OOC:
You have gained Erastil's minor boon: Whenever you roll a critical failure at a check to Subsist in the wild, you get a failure instead.

Dalton:

Sleep finds you easily tonight. The ache in your muscles fades as you lie still, the rhythm of your breath deep and steady. In that quiet space between thought and rest, something shifts. Time stills. The world slows.

And then, you are standing in a vast, tranquil courtyard beneath a sky the color of old parchment. Marble tiles stretch beneath your feet, warm but not hot. The air smells faintly of incense and distant rain. Surrounding you are scroll-covered walls, calligraphy in languages you know and many you don’t—yet they all make sense, as if they were written on the inside of your soul.

You feel him before you see him.

A presence—calm, contained, unwavering.

You turn.

He is seated cross-legged atop a flat stone. A man. A god. His name comes to you. Irori.

His body is a study in perfect balance: strong but not swollen, lithe but not frail. Every muscle is exactly as it should be. His simple robes hang in clean, natural folds, his bare arms and feet unadorned. His gaze is sharp, but not piercing. It holds no judgment—only observation. Only truth. He inclines his head once. A silent acknowledgment.

"Dalton," he says, and though his voice is no louder than a breath, it carries through the courtyard like a bell. "You were not born into this world, yet you stand upon its soil now. This was not accident. It was selection." He rises—not hurried, not slow, just precisely at the pace he means to. "Many cry out for salvation. Many hunger for strength. Few are ready to cultivate it. You are ready. Not finished—but ready."

He steps forward, hands behind his back, walking a slow circle around you. "Your body is strong. But strength without clarity is chaos. Your mind is sharp. But knowledge without humility is arrogance. Your spirit is steady. But steadiness without purpose is stagnation." He pauses in front of you, watching. "You have been given a gift—not perfection, but the path to it. Golarion is a world fraying at the edges. Power has grown wild. Discipline has grown rare. You are here not to dominate others, but to inspire them. To lift them. To teach by example."

He turns and gestures toward one of the walls. The calligraphy there glows faintly as words rearrange themselves, forming a phrase in a language you do not recognize—but understand nonetheless:

"Perfection is not an end. It is a practice."

He turns back, and his right hand opens. Floating just above his palm is a tiny bead of light—shimmering, shifting with strange depth. Not heat. Not energy. Understanding. "This is my boon to you," Irori says. "A seed of knowledge. You will not grasp it all at once. But when your body, mind, and spirit align, it will bloom. In a moment of need, when instinct fails, it will show you the next motion." He steps closer and lifts the bead to your forehead. It dissolves into you like mist, and you feel your thoughts settle—sharper, clearer.

"Stay humble. Train without end. Help others rise." He places a hand briefly on your shoulder—warm, heavy with calm. "Walk the path, Dalton. Walk it well."

And then the courtyard fades, the incense and scrolls dissolving into morning light. You wake before sunrise, heart quiet, body still. The ache in your muscles is gone. A new kind of clarity lingers in your breath, and though no words are spoken, you know:

You have begun.
OOC:
You have gained Irori's minor boon. Once, when you roll a failure at a check to Recall Knowledge, you get a critical success instead. Furthermore, the check loses the secret trait, so you know for sure that the result was a critical success. Irori typically grants this boon for an extremely consequential check to Recall Knowledge.

Novac:

The dream creeps in like smoke—slow, sweet, and honey-thick.

You find yourself in a golden chamber lit by a thousand flickering candles. Their flames dance without heat, casting shadows that move with minds of their own. The air smells of jasmine and spice, and every breath hums in your throat like laughter held just behind your teeth. Silks drape the walls like water frozen in motion. At the center of the room stands a tall, lithe figure with slender pointed ears—every step of her bare feet silent on the marble floor, every motion fluid as molten gold.

You somehow know her name.

Calistria.

She moves like temptation incarnate, yellow silk clinging and flowing around her body in turns, teasing without revealing. Her long, pointed ears twitch slightly as she tilts her head toward you, smiling in a way that sends a chill down your spine—equal parts seduction and threat. "Well, well," she purrs, her voice curling through the room like smoke. "A little rat from another world… and yet you landed on your feet."

She circles you, fingertip trailing just behind her along your shoulder—not quite touching, but close enough to raise the hairs on your neck. "You were caged, weren’t you? Branded, locked away, forgotten. But now…" She gestures, and the chamber around you shifts—becoming a dark alley, then a glittering ballroom, then a battlefield lit by moonlight. "Now, you’re free. Golarion is full of opportunity, Novac. And I adore people who know how to take what the world won’t give willingly."

She stands in front of you again, her eyes gleaming like amber glass. "You were brought here for a reason. Not to be a hero in shining armor. No, no." She grins wider, revealing teeth just a little too sharp. "You were brought here because this world is unraveling, and sometimes it takes a knife in the dark to cut the right threads."

She leans in close, her lips near your ear. "Be who you are, Novac. No chains. No apologies. Seek pleasure, take revenge when it's deserved, and lie through your pretty little teeth if it gets you where you want to go."

Her hand comes up—golden nails glittering like stingers—and she opens her palm. A small, shimmering brooch lies within: a brooch shaped like a wasp, its wings made of slivers of mirror. "My boon," she whispers. "Use it when you need to bend the truth to your needs. Let them believe what you want them to believe. Let them love you. Or fear you."

She presses it to your chest. You don’t feel it pierce, but it burns—just for a moment—and then the heat fades, replaced by a flicker of something else: confidence. Power. She steps back, her gaze appraising and amused.

"Play the game well, my little sting. The world’s full of locked doors, but you’ve got all the keys."

She turns, her silhouette vanishing into candlelight and silk, and you feel yourself falling—no, gliding—back into your body, into the inn where you sleep. You wake, and while the brooch is nowhere to be seen, you can feel the prick of pain from where it was. And you can feel its potential waiting to be released.

Novac stared at the ceiling in disbelief. His instincts tried to convince him it was all just a weird dream, but he knew it wasn't. The voice from the vision echoed in his mind: "Be who you are," the god had said. But who was he, really? She'd said he'd been caged, but he hadn't minded prison; he'd even liked it, in a way... but had he? Was this truly the life he'd envisioned for himself—constantly in and out of prison?
The dream hadn't revealed what Calistra truly wanted him to do. The world was unraveling, and he needed to "cut the right threads." What did that even mean? He was supposed to be himself, free, and enjoying life, yet there was something else the god wanted from him, something she hadn't disclosed. It lingered in the shadows, much like Calistra herself, waiting for him to uncover it.
He'd gleaned another hint, not from what she said, but from what she didn't say. There was no mention of returning to his old world, his old life. He had no one back there who would miss him. His mom had likely already been contacted about his "escape," so she wouldn't expect him to be foolish enough to reach out. His other friends would think the same. So, one thing was clear: he was free from his old life, free to start a new one. But what that life would look like remained hidden in the shadows of his vision.
He wondered if he should tell the others about all this, to see if they'd had visions of their own. Still deep in thought he got dressed and headed to the tavern section, hoping to grab some breakfast.

Al woke with a start, realizing it was now morning in the inn. Still in the process of waking up, he realized his hand was sore, as if he had been clenching it all night.

He wiped the sweat off of his brow, and sat on the edge of the bed.

That wasn’t just a dream…

If it was a normal dream, he’d already be forgetting details. But instead, the image of the being known as Erastil burned in Al’s mind. He sat for quite some time, reflecting on the dream.

Am I truly lost? It’s true that life back home had become somewhat monotonous, but it’s not like I was really checking in with myself either. I was just chugging along with the grind of life.

And what does it mean to be myself in this new form? What does it say about me, and how can I turn it into a strength?

Ruffling his hands through his hair, Al looked out the window to the beautiful morning sky.

Erastil said this world is sick … reminds me of back home. Looks like we won’t be going back anytime soon, so maybe I can do some work that means something for a change. At least for me.

Feeling somewhat awkward, Al stood up and looked to the sky pointedly.

Alright Erastil, I heed your words.
Jun 8, 2025 2:20 am
God rays shone into her room through the window pane, highlighting the microscopic motes of dust and ash floating in the air. She did not drag herself from her bed, but sat up and placed her feet on the warm floor in a graceful motion. The clumsiness she always carried with her was absent, replaced by a sense of unity with her own flesh. She rose, approaching the fading flames while bare and unbound. Excitement and euphoric freedom prickled her skin. AJ spun around, gliding her hands along her body. The imposing demon of a shadow on the wall was there to greet her, standing still as it stared at her.

"You burned for me in a world of evil where I was the one named and forsaken. No more. I am fire. I am change. Beautiful and unleashed. We will walk together, and I will burn hotter and brighter than you ever could. Rest, and smolder softly in the darkness. I am free."

Touching her cheek, the residual warmth inspired a smile. A deep breath escaped, and the shadow on the wall transitioned to match her current form. I know you will always be there, waiting for me to need you again. I hope that day never comes. AJ and the new shadow enjoyed being themselves before eventually coming down late into the morning. It felt like seeing through a new set of eyes.

"A god visited me while I was sleeping." She would say upon seeing the others again.
Jun 9, 2025 12:26 pm
Dalton awoke from the dream and simply laid in his beg for a moment. Each morning since he had arrived, he took note of his surroundings, some part of him expecting one day to awake in his own bed or a hospital somewhere back in his Earth. Again he found himself in this strange new world, but for perhaps the first morning, he was slightly less disappointed with that prospect.

He rose from bed, stretched smoothly as a cat or a dancer. The words from the dream still lingering in his mind. The strength and power of this body, honed through years of practice and training. It was so different from the one he was used to. Gone were the endless headaches which had plagued him since his youth. Gone was the strained breathing and multitudes of medicines. Gone was the old, fat, breaking down body which seemed to get worse each day. He had been reforged, apparently by the divine beings of this new world. Reforged with a new purpose other than typing away at his keyboard.

The words he had brought with him came to his mind "Trust me, I'm a Super Hero". A novelty tee shirt, could have easily been any number of other funny sayings or just plain grey as was his normal. But that day he had disappeared, it was the shirt at the top of the pile.

Standing here reforged into this form, called by a god to aid a failing world, did he believe? would he follow that call.

"There is no spoon..." he said sarcastically. He had long ago stopped believing in god, ever since he had lost her... would he believe now?
When he arrived from his room, he was still heated from the exercises he had done. Forms similar to the yoga he struggled to do at doctor's orders, but far more intense than anything he could have mastered in his home world. His new mind and body almost demanded it from him, and after the visitor last night, he felt the need to continue along the path.

He smiled at AJ as she said pretty much the same words he was about so say. "I was about to say that. Someone name Irori visited me, said I was selected for this path that we are now on."
Jun 11, 2025 5:34 am
Hearing the others talk about a 'dream,' Novac chimed in, "Yeah, I had something similar – more like a vision. A god named Calistria visited me with a cryptic message about freedom and the world unraveling. The problem is, this 'dream' gave me zero clues on how I or we could prevent it. And no mention of going home either." He paused, gauging their reactions. "Anyway, I guess I need to find out more about Calistria. Maybe the school library has something, or Lesedi knows about her."
Jun 11, 2025 10:11 am
When you return to the Magaambya after breakfast, Lesedi is surprised to hear about your dreams. "Oh, wow! I've heard stories of people who have had visions of the gods, but I've never met any of them until now! You should feel honored, indeed!" If asked, the elf can give you basic information about each of the divinities who spoke to you.

Arshea: Appearing in art more than any of the other empyreal lords, Arshea, the Spirit of Abandon represents freedom, physical beauty, and sexuality. More than anything else, freedom is what matters to Arshea. For many this is most commonly seen as freedom for sexual expression, but Arshea represents the freedom to experience all that is good in the world, be it an ideology or a specific emotional or physical expression. So long as it doesn’t harm others, Arshea believes creatures should do, think, and feel as they will. They encourage their followers to try new things, to think in new ways, and to wear new forms.

Erastil: Unlike many other good deities, Erastil, Old Deadeye, does not send his followers out into the world to fight and crush evil. Eschewing crusades and other ventures that take his followers away from their homes, Erastil watches over those who devote their lives to family and community. He is primarily an agricultural deity, specifically focusing on those aspects of nature that either can be tamed or are of use to his followers. His domain encompasses the plants and animals that farmers, hunters, and ranchers deal with in their everyday lives. While he is a protective deity, Erastil steps in only when quiet, pastoral lives are threatened. He desires his followers to live their lives in peace, with no risk of being conscripted into armies, devoured by monsters, or destroyed by magic.

Irori: Irori, Master of Masters, exemplifies the concepts of self-perfection. His dogma states that he was a mortal who gained godhood through achieving a physical and mental state that surpassed mortal limitations. His followers seek to emulate their god’s divine state by perfecting themselves using the words of the Unbinding of Fetters, Irori’s sacred text. The illuminated pages of the tome detail numerous physical, spiritual, and mental exercises, as well as methods of learning and remembering.

Calistria: As symbolized by the three daggers of her religious symbol, Calistria, the Savored Sting, has three aspects: lust, revenge, and trickery. Silver-tongued and charming, she is a master of weaving insults into compliments and laying intricate groundwork for retribution at its finest. She is a goddess of vengeance, but it would be a mistake to assume that means she pursues justice. Calistria is fickle, shifting her loyalties and interests as her whims take her—though she never forgets a slight, and any who think she has forgiven will surely find it is only a matter of time before they are targeted by a long-term plot of revenge to lay them thoroughly low.
Jun 11, 2025 8:23 pm
"Typical," Novak thought to himself. "I'm stuck with a fickle god whose loyalties shift like sand. She'd probably sell me out if it suited her whim." But then again, what did he expect? He had chosen this life and the path it would take. Out loud, he said, "Thank you for the information, Lesedi. Now, I assume you'll want to continue your scientific experiments with my magically inclined friends here. What do you suggest I do while you're occupied with them? Are there any places in town I should check out?"
Jun 12, 2025 7:25 am
"You're welcome to stay for the experiments as well!" Lesedi says to Novac. "A spark of magic exists within all of us. You may not be able to wield the power just yet, but I might be able to kindle that spark with enough coaxing. If you're set on going out on your own, though, there's all sorts of interesting things to see and do in Nantambu. There's the Carnivorous Gardens or Oba's Menagerie if you like interesting plants or animals. The Black Crowned Crane in the heart of the entertainment is a popular place, as are the Dance Courts. Or you could check out the boat races!"

Novac was about to walk out the door when Lesedi's suggestion gave him pause. He realized that if he were to survive, he'd need every advantage this world provided. "The city can wait,"he decided. "Time to discover if I possess magic."

AJ practically danced through the streets of Nantambu on their way to Magaambya. Singing songs in her mind and imagining what she could do with all this freedom, she would stop here and there to wave at passers-by. Freedom is a wonderful gift. It's not as though it cost me nothing, but I will rectify that. And it doesn't come without expectations, but must I care about expectations when they are simply to do what I want to do? Who cares if I'm serving someone else's ends? This is my story, and I'm going to make it wrap this world into it, not the other way around. Hearing Lesedi's explanation elicited little more than a smile and a nod. It was all that she expected and felt from that being.

"Transitioning realities and bodies. Gods bestowing us with visions. I guess we're the chosen ones after all. Arshea told me to be myself, and I will make the world a better place. Fitting for a god of freedom and expression. We're on the same page. What about you and Calistria, Novac? She sounds a little extreme for how I've come to know you."

Thoughts wandering once more to her own desires, there was only a brief pause before she said more.

"Magic is good, and harnessing it is great. But I also need money. I want to hire expensive tailors. This rugged gear helped me through the jungle, but I need to look how I want to look. This ain't it. The Black Crowned Crane is a really cool name for a place, so I want to check that out for sure. I was always a clumsy oaf in the other world, never knowing how to dance. I want to change that here. And as we get stronger, we're gonna help people. The jungle was terrifying, genuinely, but we have to get stronger if we're to do the great things the deities here expect us to do."

Her mouth was running a mile a minute, overflowing with her thoughts and desires.

Al cocked his head to the side, deep in thought while stroking his beard.

"Thank you for the information, Lesedi. Seems like you were on the right track from the beginning, AJ."

Hmm, I wonder what Erastil would make of my travels so far … I wonder if I’m meant to choose a community of my own.

Al stretched his arms as he mumbled to himself,
"Doesn’t sound too bad, as far as gods go in mythology."

Now to Lesedi, he asked "So what does this testing involve? So far my magic seems to be linked with the power of the land itself, if that helps."

Dalton smiled at how excited AJ was since her vision. It reminded him just a bit how excited his daughter's would get at times. A small bit of sadness there at the thought perhaps he might not see them again. Dalton was not sure what his plans were - other than apparently lots martial arts.

"I have been able to tap into some inner power, but mostly just to punch things harder."

"Alright, let's test what you can do," Lesedi says. "I've had some of the other teachers help me design rooms with scenarios suited to your talents. There are some physical elements to the tests, but a large portion of them are illusions, so you shouldn't have to worry about hurting yourselves or others." She offers each of you a different test to measure your potential.
AJ

You're placed in a circular arena filled with flammable obstacles—wooden poles, paper lanterns, oil pots, and illusions of innocent bystanders. Your task is to burn only the designated targets without harming anything else. Oh, and watch out for the flame traps scattered around the chamber!
OOC:
To complete the challenge, you'll need to attempt a DC 18 Arcana or Occultism check to identify what's illusory and what's actually hazardous, a spell attack roll against AC 16 to hit the targets with your fire spells, and a DC 17 Reflex save to avoid the fire traps! If you fail any of the rolls, you can try again, but after two failures, there will be an additional complication to overcome.

Al

Your room resembles a small grove that has been corrupted by dark magic. Plants are twisted and overgrown and animals are agitated. You must tend to the flora and fauna and cleanse the area.
OOC:
To complete the challenge, you'll need to attempt a DC 17 Survival roll to identify the source of the corruption, a DC 15 Athletics roll to push your way through the twisting vines that try to impede your progress, and a DC 18 Nature check to use your magic to soothe the land. If you fail any of the rolls, you can try again, but after two failures, there will be an additional complication to overcome.

Dalton

You are placed atop a thin stone pillar surrounded by violent magical wind. Projectiles, distractions, and illusions assault your senses. You must not move from your stance. Maintain control of your body, center your mind, and redirect your internal energy in harmony.
OOC:
To complete the challenge, you must attempt a DC 15 Reflex save to maintain your balance and physical tension, a DC 17 Will save to keep your mind centered, and a DC 18 Fortitude save check to keep your spirit and qi aligned. If you fail any of the rolls, you can try again, but after two failures, there will be an additional complication to overcome.

Novac

You find yourself in a chamber of mirrors. Illusory enemies stalk you. Your weapons are useless against them. You'll have to outwit, outplay, and outlast them!
OOC:
To overcome the challenge, you'll need to attempt a DC 15 Deception check to fake out the illusions, a DC 17 Stealth check to move through the mirror maze undetected, and a DC 18 Thievery check to reroute some magical traps within the maze to disrupt the illusions. If you fail any of the rolls, you can try again, but after two failures, there will be an additional complication to overcome.
Jun 13, 2025 1:37 pm
No weapons then. He didn't know much about magic but he couldn't help but wonder how powerful you had to be to construct such a convincing illusion. "Here we go" Novac said and entered the room.

Dalton looked suspiciously at the setup. Looked vaguely like one of those "American Ninja Warrior" torture obstacles. He smiled to himself, he could probably do pretty well in one of those events now. A far cry from being out of breath when climbing the stairs. Still, it was good that he had never been afraid of heights.

"Wax on, wax off" he mumbled as he moved into position. No, he was not going to do some stupid one foot crane pose, this was going to be hard enough, but perhaps he should consider practicing the real crane technique. Dalton had this odd mixture of memories, a blend of couch potato watching the Matrix and a master critiquing how wrong all the moves were. He sometimes watched those youtube videos on real fighters breaking down Hollywood action sequences. Perhaps if he ever got back to Earth he would have a new career. Of course, he would be fat, old and slow again.

Stepping into position, he centered himself, his breathing slowing, his eyes going slightly out of focus for a second before returning to normal.

A gust of wind caught him, he fought against the wind just as a projectile flashed by his face. He lost his balance and nearly fell off the pole.

"Failing right out of the gate - nice!" he chastised himself.

Dalton realized he had focused too much on balance, too much on fighting the obstacles - as he settled back, he focused instead on his breathing. Some part of his mind told him the balance would come only when he himself was balanced. He could not tell if it was his own voice, or that of the being who had visited him the night before.

Dalton focused on that inner source of strength he had used in combat on instinct, pushed out the distractions until they were just bits of dust. Instead of fighting the wind for balance, he flowed with the gusts, subtle adjustments became graceful turns as he allowed the wind to surround him, as distractions flowed past, or were nudged away with a casual turn or pivot. His mind was at peace... his will focused not on the trial or even the pole, but on himself - he slowly lost track of time as the maelstrom raged around him.

Al thoughtfully tried to invoke his connection to the earth, as sweat began to bead on his forehead from his effort.

Having identified and soothed the source of the plant’s corruption, Al still couldn’t clean them all up, struggling under the weight of the large plants.

And this is an illusion? Here goes again.

After a long time, Al was able to clear the plant matter and successfully complete his task. He smiled with relief and he looked around the room, unsure of what to do next.

"A test of power? That's exciting!" AJ grinned at Lesedi. However, it didn't take long to discover that the arena crafted for her was nothing of the sort. This was no obstacle course to cut loose on and unleash as much destruction as possible, but something with nuance. Excitement tempered into caution and anxiety, recognizing the illusions of harmless pedestrians as the true challenges she would face with her abilities. The risk of harming people provided a sobering effect over the ecstasy of overwhelming power. "Yeah, okay. I get it. I'm a danger to people. Let's get it under wraps before I hurt somebody like I hurt Novac."

The budding pyromancer rotated, trying to get a good grasp on the surroundings in the arena. Observing the illusions, the supernatural seed of knowledge that was placed in her mind poured information about magic and otherworldly power. Her face suddenly stern with seriousness and flames wreathing her hands, she charged forth.

"Let's fucking go!"

Both Al and Dalton are able to clear their challenges without too much trouble. However, AJ and Novac struggle a bit, creating new complications that they have to overcome.
AJ

The longer you take to complete the challenge, the more smoke fills the chamber from the targets that you have set ablaze. The smoke makes it harder to see where you're aiming!
OOC:
@TheForsakenEvil, you must succeed at a DC 17 Perception check before you are able to attempt the Arcana check again. You may try as many times as you need to, with the only penalty for failing being frustration and embarrassment :D.

As you struggle with the magical energies of the traps, the power disorients you. You see dozens of reflections of yourself, all of them looking at you with disappointment or laughing as they emphasize your flaws. You'll have to master your sense of self before proceeding!
OOC:
@Kristian, you must succeed at a DC 17 Will save before you are able to attempt the Thievery check again. You may try as many times as you need to, with the only penalty for failing being frustration and embarrassment :D.

Growing more and more frustrated Novac keeps trying.

Finally Novac overcomes the confusion and breaks the trap.

Blasting targets apart and setting fire to everything around her was simple enough, but it was a lot more difficult when trying to avoid civilians. Dodging the gouts of flame bursting from hidden traps was surprisingly easier than she expected, at least. Just as AJ thought she was getting somewhere with finishing this challenge, the haze of smoke began to sting her eyes. The stench eluded her awareness under the heavy focus of the other tasks she was initially committed to.

"Damn it!"

It was already difficult to make out what was a target and what wasn't. Narrowing her eyes and growling with growing frustration and panic, she prepared another onslaught of blazing rays. But it didn't seem to matter. More time, more fire, more smoke. Screaming and throwing waves of heat around like a mad-woman, she was exhausted and defeated by the time the trial was over. The task may have been complete, but the knowledge of how terrible her performance was sat crushingly upon her shoulders. When the others finally saw her, her eyes were irritated with the sting of smoke and she carried a terrible cough.

"All I'm good at is torching everything around me... No precision what-so-ever."

Novac is able to quickly master his mind and fiddle with the trap some more. Eventually, he is able to successfully reroute the magical energy and clear the challenge.

Meanwhile, AJ struggles to see clearly through the smoke. It takes a while, but she's able to finally blast the last targets. She emerges from her trial room dejected, but Lesedi gives her a reassuring smile and a pat on the shoulder. "Don't beat yourself up. If the challenge was designed to be easy, it wouldn't be called a challenge, now would it? You all performed within expectations."

After scribbling a few notes on a parchment, the petite elf turns back to you. "The next test will gauge your combat prowess and teamwork skills. Let me know when you all are ready to proceed."
Jun 19, 2025 2:29 pm
Novac was about to comment on AJ's difficulty finishing her task, but he decided to keep quiet after his own less-than-stellar performance. In fact, he was still seething over it. "Well, Lesedi, I'm ready for the next test when you are."
Jun 19, 2025 8:09 pm
"Combat prowess and teamwork... well so far it usually goes - I rush in and get bitten by something... after that it varies. Actually sometimes Novac gets bitten first. Honestly - we all really just get bit by a lot of damn things. AJ and Al have gotten pretty good at patching us back up and I seem to be picking up somethings along those lines."

Dalton smiled slightly and shook his head.

"We are not going to get bitten are we? I would be nice to avoid that for a day."
Jun 20, 2025 8:23 am
Lesedi giggles. "Nope, no biting! I've asked the leshys in the Gardens for help with this part. They made some wooden constructs for the Starday Tournament a few months ago that are perfect for beginners to spar against. You might get cut or bludgeoned, but not bitten!"
Jun 20, 2025 11:35 am
Dalton laughed, "Refreshing change I guess - although I did get cut with a rusty knife as soon as we arrived. I really need to not keep track, it is getting to be a long list."
Jun 20, 2025 3:00 pm
Al felt confident after completing his trials. He nodded along with Dalton’s assessment of their team strategy and began to stretch.

Laughing slightly, Al exclaimed "Can’t be any worse than the plant monster, eh?"
Jun 20, 2025 8:28 pm
AJ cocks a weak smile in response to Lesedi's encouragement. "Yeah, I suppose that's true. I just worry about hurting people. Like I already did to Novac. These powers are amazing, but explosive." Thinking more on the notion of the challenge of combat prowess and Dalton's comment about her healing power, her smile strengthened some. All the talk of biting happened to amuse her a bit too. "If you want me to destroy shit, I'm good at that. Especially if it's something I can make into firewood." Finally, her own comment seemed to bring out a grin.

"Teamwork is something I think we're still working on, but I'm optimistic about it. By the way, did you say leshys? Like tree people? We had myths about them in the world we came from. I wonder if it's all just the power of imagination or something else. Prolly nothin' I'll ever know for sure. Either way, I'm ready to go whenever. Sounds like good practice for whatever this Starday Tournament thing is you mentioned. Wouldn't mind throwing myself at something like that now." Starting to feel like I'm in my own anime if we get damned tournament arc.
Jun 20, 2025 10:43 pm
Novac's grin widened at Dalton's bite remark. "That plant monster definitely slashed me before it bit me... probably. Hard to tell when you're just trying to survive," he quipped with a laugh. "But hey, we've had some solid teamwork in a pinch. So, let's do this." He tried to hold back, but the next words tumbled out. Facing AJ with a big grin, he added, "Just try not to BBQ me again. Honestly, with your aim, you should probably shoot at me; then we'll know you'll miss." Novac snorted with laughter, the sound edging into hysteria. Was he cracking up? Gods, ability tests, plant-people, leshies... it was all so completely absurd. Maybe he was just dreaming this up from a psych ward. He took a deep breath, getting a grip. "Right, sorry. Not entirely stable over here. Let's keep going."
