Act 1. Phaulkonmere

Act 1. Phaulkonmere
The noise of Waterdeep faded behind them as Cormac and Sif stepped through the wrought iron gates of Phaulkonmere. The air was cooler here, touched with the scent of damp earth, flowering ivy, and old stone. The villa grounds stretched before them in quiet defiance of the city’s chaos — a pocket of wilderness carefully cultivated. Vines draped over carved archways, and winding stone paths disappeared into shaded groves and mossy nooks where birdsong echoed softly.

The main house stood at the far end of the garden, its tower just visible above the canopy. Gilded falcons glinted on its stonework, catching the light like watchful eyes. The manor's polished elegance didn’t feel ostentatious — rather, it seemed old, respected, and quietly powerful.

Among the greenery, a tall, lean half-elf stood, his long brown hair adorned with bits of foliage, and his taupe skin blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. His green-black eyes held a distant focus, as if attuned to the whispers of the garden itself.

One to get straight to the point Sif steps up to the half-elf. "Hello," she gives him a friendly smile, "Branric said you might need some help?"

Melannor blinked, as if her voice had drawn him up from the roots themselves.

"Yes… Branric has a good sense for sending the right people, when it matters."

He stepped aside, gesturing for them to walk with him along a stone path winding beneath arching vines. As they moved, his voice dropped, growing more focused.

"The City of the Dead is more than a resting place. The roots run deep there — through catacombs older than the city itself. And now… they are stirring. Sinkholes have begun to open. Graves collapse into voids beneath. Some of the caretakers whisper of movement in the night — things shifting in the dark."

He paused, laying a hand gently on the bark of a twisting tree beside the path.

"It may be simple decay, but I do not believe so. Necrotic energy, perhaps. A buried curse awakening. Or worse — something unnatural, clawing upward. Ankhegs, carrion crawlers… maybe even something that slipped from the Lower Planes. It is too soon to say, but I fear it is not merely ghosts."

He sighed, fingers brushing a frond absently.

"If you are willing, I can guide you to the nearest cave-in. I also know of a Sage, a Sun Elf, who might be willing to help you investigate this. I can offer potions, herbs, and goodwill. After that... let the roots guide your way."

Cormac let out a slow breath, rubbing a hand over the back of his neck. His gaze drifted toward the verdant garden around him. Its greenery did little to assuage the city boy’s nerves.

"So, it's horrors in the dark you want us to deal with. Clean them out, maybe put an end to whatever's causing it. That's what you're asking, then?"

"Aye, I'll venture it... if Sifonia's in. Better two blades going in armed and ready than some poor drunk stumbling in and getting sucked down into the deep."

"But," he said, "I'm no holy paladin. No great warrior. I'm just a grunt who's been lucky enough to stay on the right side of a sword point."

He scratched at the stubble along his jaw, eyes narrowing slightly as he imagined the task ahead of them.

"What I'm sayin' is, horrors in the dark—unnatural things—they're not the kind of enemy you beat with just grit and a sharp edge. So if there's a sage, someone who knows the supernatural, then that's the sort of help we'll count on."
May 5, 2025 2:34 pm
Sif nods, in agreement with Cormac, "I'll go, but like Cormac said, this sage would probably be a good one to have with us on this. So, I guess, introduce us to them."

Sif gives Cormac a encouraging smile, seeing him a bit uneasy with the unnatural prospect, "I'm sure grit and a sharp edge will be plenty helpful too." She doesn't want him thinking there's anything wrong with being a grunt, or staying on away from the sharp ends of swords. That's all she is too.

The sage is @GeneralET character =) So let's wait a couple of days for the character generation and I will post with Melannor telling you about the elf.

OOC:
Change of plans. I'll let GeneralET finish character generation before including them here. I won't leave this thread blocked, so we are moving on with an NPC sage.
Melannor inclined his head, a slow nod of approval at their resolve.

"There is one I trust. A sage of the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors — her name is Theryssa Valemir, a Sun Elf of great age and quiet brilliance. She keeps a small study in the Dock Ward, at the second floor of Serpentil Books & Folios. The shop is located on the eastern side of Book Street just south of Black Wagon Alley. You won’t find her name on the door, but ask for the ‘Madam of Veins and Runes.’ They’ll know who you mean."

He stopped before an arched trellis tangled with moonvine.

"Theryssa is… eccentric. She prefers scrolls to people, but if you tell her you come from Phaulkonmere and speak of what stirs beneath the City of the Dead, she’ll listen."

He reached into a satchel at his side, retrieving four small vials.

"Take these — they are healing potions. It may help if things gets ugly."
OOC:
Each one heals 3 HP or can be sold for something around 50 gp each
His gaze lingered on them a moment longer.

"I’ll mark the sinkhole on your way back and give you a map with its location. But speak to Theryssa first. If something old and foul has taken root, you’ll want her wisdom before you dig too deep."

Sif takes the potions with a nod. "Thanks." She says to Melannor. Sif holds the potions out to Cormac, "We should each carry one, and if you want to you can carry the extra."
May 11, 2025 7:44 am
Cormac nod and takes the potions.

"These aren't the sort of this we got as standard issue, so it's good to have something a little extra. With a bit of luck we won't need 'em."

He nods to Melannor, not entirely sure how to address someone of his status. Druids weren't as common in the city, and he wasn't sure of the polite form of address.

"Thank you... Druid, with these and some good fortune we'll have your cemetary problem sorted out quick enough."

"I need to get my gear before we head down, but we should definitely call on this Theryssa Valemir. Why don't we meet at the Serpentil? I'm sure you have gear to collect as well."

He turns about to head off with Sifona, but hestiates once they are by themselves.

"You're good with this, Sif? This is a home-grown problem and Waterdavians ought to be responsible for problems they created, so I'm going. But no one would blame you if you wanted to avoid a dangerous trip down into the dark."

He scratches at his strubble, "Not that I'm trying to scare you off. I'd welcome a reliable blade at my side."

As Cormac and Sif made their way through the bustling streets of Waterdeep, they eventually arrived at Book Street. There, nestled between aged buildings, stood Serpentil Books & Folios. The shop's façade was modest, with a weathered wooden sign hanging above the door, depicting a serpent coiled around an open book. The windows were tinted, offering little glimpse into the interior.

Pushing open the heavy door, they were greeted by the scent of aged parchment and leather bindings. The interior was dimly lit by floating magical globes, casting a warm glow over the deep-hued bookshelves that reached up to the ceiling. The walls were adorned with maps and scrolls, some framed, others rolled and stacked meticulously.

Behind a polished mahogany counter stood a tall, slender elf with silver hair pulled back into a neat braid. She looked up from a tome she had been perusing, her golden eyes assessing the newcomers with quiet curiosity.

"Welcome to Serpentil Books & Folios," she said, her voice smooth and measured. "How may I assist you today?"
OOC:
Sif, don't forget to answer Cormac, see his message above, before you roleplay at the shop.

Sif’s face closes off a little at Cormac’s question her shoulders squaring. "I’ve lived and worked in Waterdeep for years." She starts walking again. "Let find the book store and the sage."

Cormac looks a little guilty when Sif answers. It's clear he's said the wrong thing.

"Ah yeah, sorry. I didn't mean to say..."

He can't find a good way to mend that bridge, so he just leaves it. These things will sort themselves out. It wasn't the first time he'd put his foot firmly in his mouth.

When they reach the book store and the mage they had been told about addresses them, he answers

"We've come from the druid at Phaulkonmere. They've asked us to deal with the problem with the cemetery and sent us here. Are you the 'Madam of Veins and Runes'? They said you could help us with our task. "

The elf's expression shifted subtly, a hint of recognition flashing in her eyes. She closed the tome gently and gestured toward a staircase at the back of the shop. "Upstairs. Go ahead."
The stairs creaked underfoot as Cormac and Sif ascended to the second floor of Serpentil Books & Folios. At the top, the narrow staircase opened into a small studio, more study than sitting room. The walls were lined floor-to-ceiling with shelves sagging beneath the weight of scrolls, tomes, and curious trinkets sealed under glass domes. Starlight filters, brass astrolabes, dragonbone styluses, and delicate crystal matrices filled every spare niche. A cluttered writing desk overflowed with parchment and inkpots, and the faint scratch of a quill echoed from within.

The room was dimly lit save for a tall arched window facing the harbor, where threads of sunlight spilled over a single high-backed chair. Seated in it was a Sun Elf woman, her features statuesque and angular, timeless in the way only ancient elves could be. Her long, pale hair shimmered with gold strands, swept loosely to one side and clasped with a brooch shaped like a stylized eye.

She wore layered robes of midnight blue and dusky amethyst, runes embroidered in silver thread tracing down the sleeves like veins. Her eyes — pale lilac, almost opalescent — turned to the newcomers with a distant curiosity.

To one side of the room, seated cross-legged on a thick rug and surrounded by open books, was a male elf — younger - reading a thick volume titled The Tangled Lattices of Limbo and the Ethereal Web.

Theryssa gestured to a pair of low stools before her chair, her fingers marked with smudges of ink and faint glimmers of magical residue.

"Yes? Can I help you?" - she asked.

"Indeed, Melannor's message reached me," she said, and gestured toward a nearby shelf, where a detailed map of Waterdeep was unfurled, highlighting the expansive grounds of the City of the Dead.

"The City of the Dead is more than a cemetery; it's a vast, walled park that serves as the final resting place for many of Waterdeep's citizens. By day, it's a place of reflection and leisure, but by night, it's closed to the public, though not always devoid of activity."

She leaned back, her gaze distant.

"Beneath its serene surface lies a network of catacombs, some dating back to the days of Nimoar's Hold. Over time, space became scarce, leading to the creation of portals by mages, connecting tombs to demiplanes for interment. If one of those old portals was found, disturbed, or perhaps even broken open... Something may be using it as an entrance to the City of Splendors"

Turning her attention back to Sif and Cormac, she continued,

"As for the sinkholes and disturbances, several creatures could be responsible. Ankhegs, large insectoid predators, are notorious for their burrowing and can cause significant structural damage. Other potential culprits include Purple Worms, whose tunneling can destabilize the ground, Stone-Eaters, Giant Ants or even extraplanar entities."

Cormac leaned in to study the map. His eyes narrowed as the wizard spoke, but he said nothing at first — just a slight shift of his jaw.

"Giant insects, worms — I've not got much experience with that sort of thing, so if you’ve got any tips on gear or strategy, I’ll take ’em," he grumbled.

His gaze flicked to the shaded parts of the map that hinted at the depths beneath. The talk of ancient portals and other planes made him glance at Sif, then back to the map. He folded his arms, shoulders stiffening.

"But, these... old mage doors. What sort of things use ’em? And are we likely to see anything from 'somewhere else' down there?"

'Somewhere else' was the best way that Cormac, with his limited experience in the metaphysics of the planes, could express.

He paused, then added more quietly:

"Are we expecting to meet any of the... residents?"

He didn’t say undead. It made him think too much about the old stories his mother used to tell — whispered tales about the City of the Dead at night.
May 21, 2025 7:09 pm
Sif looks over the map too, doing her best to memorize the best routes just in case. "Melannor made it seem like… well, he made it seem like there’d be… hands on help." She hastily adds, "Not that I don’t appreciate sound advice."

Elestar was so focused on his book that he barely noticed people entering the room where he sat.
Of course, when the silence broke he could not help but listen.

His long dark hair were in stark contrast with his pale skin. It could not be helped spending all that time inside studying books.
Once he heard the words 'mage door' and 'portal' his interest for the book was lost. Perhaps it was time to leave the safety of the studies and experiment those phenomena in person. This would ultimately be the only way to better understand how time, space and planes interacted together.

"Excuse me" he says getting up. " I am myself a scholar versed in history and extraplanar theory. I could not help but hear your current expedition might bring you to places of high interest for me. If you allow it, I would love to accompany you on your endeavour."

Now facing the group he realized he did not even introduced himself properly yet.
"I am called Elestar"

Cormac hadn't noticed the other figure nestled in among the books until they spoke.

"Elestar," he repeated simply. "I'm Cormac."

"If you have some knowledge in these matters, and you want to join, you're welcome too, if you can contribute."

"It's not for me to judge, but just so we're clear, we're expecting to fight not to sightsee."

Not offended by the remark Elestar simply replies.
"Nice to meet you Cormac. I can handle myself in though if that is what you are worried about. I do not expect it to be an easy walk. That is one reason I do not go there by myself. After all a sage once said :Its dangerous to go alone."

Theryssa watched the exchange with a calm, unreadable expression. After Elestar's introduction, she turned to one of the nearby cabinets, unlocking it with a whispered word and a flick of her wrist. Inside were tightly rolled scrolls tied with colored ribbons, each glowing faintly with arcane energy. Turning her pale gaze to the group, she asked evenly:

"If I were to offer you three minor scrolls — of your choosing — what would best serve your strengths? Something to empower your allies? Strike down your foes? Or hinder them with arcane interference? One of each?"

Sif watches and listens intently to Cormac and Elestar’s conversation. At Theryssa’s question about scrolls Sif’s face pinks a little. "I’m not versed in scrolls… how do they work exactly."

Theryssa turned her gaze toward Sif.

"A fair question," she said. "Magic scrolls are not like potions or enchanted items. They are distilled intent — spells written in the language of creation, woven into parchment with rare inks, rare materials, and rarer still, precision."

She picked up the scroll of Scorching Ray and held it between them.

"To use a scroll, you must understand not just the words, but the rhythm of them — the cadence, the breath, the subtle turns of the hand as you speak the glyphs aloud. It’s not unlike playing a complex piece of music... except a single mistake means silence. Normally, it takes years to learn how to safely read and activate the power woven into scrolls. Some people never do — the magic refuses them. For those who can, the scroll casts the spell stored within... but in doing so, it burns itself out. The knowledge is consumed. One chance only."
OOC:
In game terms, you need the Spell Reader trait to cast a single-use spell by reading a scroll
She glanced at Elestar. "Your scholarly companion, I suspect, has the training."

Then she looked back to Sif with a more contemplative tone.

"There are scrolls that can resurrect the dead, summon storms of flame, turn a charging warrior into a rabbit mid-step, or bathe a battlefield in radiant healing. Such power is not thrown about lightly — which is why major scrolls are rare, and most are kept under lock and key."

"These that I have here, I should say, are minor scrolls," she clarified. "Not the great spellworks of legend — no fireballs to shatter armies, no resurrection to cheat death. But still... useful tools. Clever magic. And in tight places, cleverness often wins where brute force fails."

She paused, then added.

"Even if you cannot cast them yourself," she said gently to Sif and Cormac, "your insight is still valuable. Choosing the right scroll for the journey ahead is no small thing. You two know how you fight. You know what you and your companions might face. So lend that knowledge here — help Elestar choose wisely. Strategy isn’t only steel and reflex. It’s knowing what to bring into the dark."

Cormac muses for a moment, scratching at the stubble on his chin.

"I don't know much about magic, but we have some healing by way of these potions from the Druid..."

"Maybe something to do damage to a foe that's difficult to hurt by normal means, or maybe something to see stuff that might be hidden to normal eyes."

"I assume that you have has some magic of your own," he says in a nod to Elestar, "So maybe something that you don't normally do so we have something to cover a blind-spot, so to speak"

"My magic as you call it comes from my faith. I am merely a channeler of energy. My faith is tied to the passing of time and as such I am sometimes able to alter its normal flow. It can proves to be useful in many situations although its not all powerful. As for the the scrolls I like your reasonning regarding foes unaffected by normal means. With that in mind, I would pick something that would help us defeat our ennemies, and maybe one that could help us secure a safe exit in case things go sour."

Theryssa listened to both men. When Elestar finished, she gave a single nod.

With a deft movement, she returned to the cabinet, put away the Scorching Ray scroll, and selected three other scrolls, each marked with a rune engraved on its seal. She placed them before the group with a care that suggested they were not things to be treated lightly.

"Melf’s Acid Arrow," she said, indicating the first scroll wrapped in a burnished copper ribbon. "A spell of corrosive force. Ideal for foes that resist blade and flame — or anything that thinks armor makes it untouchable."

She tapped the second, wrapped in earthy green.

"Barkskin. It toughens the flesh like old oak. Not as flashy as a shield of flame, but far more likely to keep someone standing when the blows start to fall."

Then, the last — a pale blue scroll with silver thread sealing it.

"See Invisibility. Creatures from other planes, old spirits, or certain conjured things often shroud themselves. This will reveal what others miss. Use it wisely — there are some things best unseen unless you’re ready."

She stepped back.

"They are not world-breaking spells," she said, "but each one may be the difference between falling into the dark… or walking back out of it. I give them freely. But I trust you’ll put them to use when the moment is right."

The group made their way back through the bustling city, a marked contrast from the dim, book-lined study of Theryssa. At Phaulkonmere, with a few brief words — a nod from the druid, a final wish for their success — the adventuring party pressed on toward their destination. Melannor also pressed a small pouch into Cormac’s hand. Inside were a few simple provisions: hard bread, dried fruit, and a wedge of cheddar. The druids kept their food sparse and purposeful; enough to keep their strength up without weighing them down.
OOC:

The companions fell into a comfortable silence as they walked, tearing off bits of bread and fruit to eat on the move. The city fell away around them, its clang and chatter fading into the quieter quarter near the City of the Dead — Waterdeep’s sprawling resting place for generations gone by.
