Hi everyone! Glad to be here as well

Awesome to have you here. I use Gamersplane to run the game itself but have a thread on my Discord community for OOC chat and a general hangout. It's not compulsory but it's a nice to have if you use Discord.

If possible, I would prefer the OOC of the game in here (it is more probable that I see it, I dont use a lot discord). If your prefer discord I could try.

That's fine! I find Discord is good if you want a quick answer to something from me, but I don't mind keeping everything here. From a GM's perspective, it's useful to have a second point of contact for when players forget to check in at GP (which happens quite a bit with new users)

So what do you all know about Call of Cthulhu and what are your expectations?
May 4, 2025 11:43 am
I've played a bit of older editions, so I think I have a basic handle of the mechanics. But I probably will need to refresh my memory, and get updated on any changes in the new 7e.

As for the Cthulhu Mythos in general, I've read some but certainly not all of Lovecrafts works and played some of the games (Dark Corners of the Earth & the one by Cyanide Studios). Of course you pick up a fair bit just by regular pop-culture osmosis as well.

Not really sure yet what my expectations are, just hoping for a fun game, meet some nice people, investigate some weird stuff, maybe go a little crazy, possibly get devoured by some unnamed horror. I try to go into the game with an open mind.

I know more now than a few days ago ;) Watched a few videos on the system and I've read the first chapter of the actual story. I'm a long time D&D and similar fantasy player, so Cthulhu has always been in the pile of other systems which seemed interesting at a glance, but not my main game or genre. I've been experimenting recently with playing other systems, so this seemed a great chance with CoC.

I guess my closest experience with CoC like content would be I used to play The Secret World video game, which draws heavily on similar source materials.

My expectations? Just have fun I think. This is well out of my normal game, so I'm curious not only how the game goes, but how I do with it. I'm not a naturally creative writer, so might be challenging for me.

@DrifterDwarf Glad you're open to different genres. I was weened on D&D way back when, but CoC is one of my favourite systems now. A couple of things to keep in mind is that CoC is primarily investigation, so you should be looking for clues, reading books, and in some cases hitting the library (though this scenario doesn't give that opportunity). The second thing is that the characters are not heroes, they are normal everyday people. Death and insanity are likely outcomes for everyone, so facing up against a mythos creature is never a good idea. Where you might be expected to stand and fight in D&D , that should be a last resort in CoC.

And don't worry too much about your writing, I don't expect anyone to write reams of flowery prose, just respond how you're comfortable.

@Synaptic The mechanics haven't changed too dramatically from previous editions, all skills are % based and there are a couple of new mechanics, notable Push rolls, where you get a second chance at a non-combat skill roll, and Luck, where you have a pool that you can use to influence your dice rolls.

Sounds great. Looking to stretch my horizons a bit :)

That is one things I've noticed in moving into some other systems. In D&D we generally expect to be able to win. Moving to systems where win may not be an option and survive may be a long shot - definitely a different kind of story.

Hi!! Soo Similar to what others have said, I am long time RPG player but never had the chance to play CoC. It has always been under my radar.
I dont own the rules or played other editions.
Regarding experience with the topic, I have played boardgames: Madness mansions mainly.
What do I expect? to have fun :)
Thankyou for running it for newbys!

Hello everyone. I have never played CoC but I have been interested in playing it for a little while. In terms of expectations I am hoping to learn the game and of course have fun.

What to expect.

Call of Cthulhu is very different from other RPG's. Death and madness are a definite risk if not a certainty. Feel free to be attached to your character but don't expect to survive!

The game is set in the 1920's and 30's. Don't worry too much about whether you know the period and accuracy, particularly in how your character talks - this is still a fantasy game, and while it is grounded in the real world, you don't need to be a historian to play. The important things should be obvious (like no cell phones!)

The game has a very robust Sanity system and you may have to enact bouts of madness or even lose control of your character for a time. This is all part of the game, so buckle up.

Your characters are just regular people, not heroes and you know nothing of the supernatural.

A regular CoC game would involve a lot of investigation, usually in libraries, newspaper offices etc. The scenario is slightly different as it takes place in one room, but that's not to say there aren't things to discover. Look around!

This is a horror game, so hopefully you are ready for the following, this game may contain any or all of the following. but if any of these make you uncomfortable, please contact me privately.

Note that I am old grognard of the GM/Keeper, so lack sensitivities that some modern GM's foster, so feel free to poke me if you're not happy about something.

Things you may expect in this scenario:

Blood
Suicide
Ritual
Horror
Madness
Death

Thanks for uploading your character sheets to the game, just waiting on our newest recruit. Note that I have edited your max sanity to 99. This won't have an impact in a one shot anyway, but everyone starts with a max of 99 which goes down as you learn more about the Mythos and gain a new skill - Cthulhu Mythos.

Characters are now all up. Does anyone have any questions? Are we ready to get started?
May 6, 2025 6:28 pm
I'm good to go if everyone else is!
