JUMP! Fornice to Jokotre

May 21, 2025 10:39 pm
FORNICE/Mora/Spinward Marches. Main Orbital Port, mid-deck, 'soft' dock ready for departure. 0800, April 18, Imperial year 1115.

A few hours earlier the last of the "special freight" destined for the manufacturing facility on the surface of Jokotre was loaded and the 4 High Passengers came aboard with their luggage. With the sudden departure of Lu-Yam, Steward duties fall to Rin Bauer, so its up to him to greet the four 'technicians' and get them settled in their staterooms. They are Iggy and Marge Pilli, brother and sister, both seeming to be in their 40s (standard years) and looking stereotypically ex-military. The other two techs are cut from the same mold; Brucalli Shine and Uvi Theodoluck, though perhaps 10 years younger than the siblings. They are cooperative and knowledgable, seasoned travelers who will make life pretty easy for the Steward.

Decherek the Droyne 'Sport' is already settled in, of course, and he comes around to greet the 4 technicians as they settle in. All seems fine on the passenger front.

The six tons of general freight (consumer goods) and 5 tons of pharmaceuticals (pain killers) were loaded earlier with no problems.

But the 10 Low Passengers and 1 Middle Passengers require pick-up from the orbital station.

Said Ma rounds up the low-berth people, who are all headed to Jokotre with the promise of housing and jobs on the orbital space-port there. The middle-passenger is also heading for the main orbital port, but looking to join up with his brother-in-law on some un-specified business venture. Yu Min Tang looks young, not much more than '21', and needs some extra help getting settled aboard. "First time on a jump ship", he confides.

By 0930 everyone is aboard, the low passengers have been processed into the cold sleep berths, and T-Jive has Traffic Control on comms.

"Miss Fortune, Miss Fortune...... You are clear to break lock whenever you are ready." The Vargr pilot acknowledges and only a minute later a very slight lurch indicates seperation.

"We have you clear at 0935, Miss Fortune. Half-G to satellite buoy 3-Beta, then clear for 1G outbound lane three-six. Copy that, Miss Fortune?"

Everything goes as it should, the satellite marker is passed, and acceleration goes to 1G. All systems nominal.

OOC:
Normally I would have dice rolls from Engineering, Navigation, and Pilot. All three need to succeed in order to have an efficient and safe 'jump'. Jumps are never routine! But for the sake of getting the game moving along I am assuming that with everything in perfect spec from the yearly maintenance and double checked and triple checked prior to lift, that it goes flawlessly!
It takes 5 1/2 hours to reach the calculated "jump point". Accelerate to half-way, then decelerate to jump. That leaves the ship at orbital velocity, relatively safe, easier on the navigator, and no need to bleed off excess velocity on exiting jump.

The computer's mechanical voice activates: "Warning, Warning. Jump initiation imminent. All crew and passengers check your safety straps now. Jump is imminent!"
May 21, 2025 11:06 pm
JUMP!
A stomach-churning vertigo, there and then gone again in an instant. Perhaps some lingering visual strangeness. But that too passes within minutes. Systems nominal. Looks like a 'good jump', but only time will tell. A mis-jump will usually manifest as Jump-sickness within 12 to 24 hours. But you don't expect that to happen this time. Everything looks good!

-----
7 Days in jump-space. Passengers make use of the entertainment and educational systems from the computer. Engage in some physical training. Virtual fencing seems popular with the four technicians. Rin has to quickly get used to setting up meals and helping the passengers as needed, but every crew-member cycles through being a 'helper'. A bridge-watch is kept, but otherwise crew have time to study or catch up on the latest Tri-vid shows. They can stow the crew dining table and bring out exercise equipment between meals.
-----

April 25, 1515 Alice Petrov has the bridge watch. Before the automated systems kick in, she notices a slight variation in the jump-bubble integrity. Ah, jump-space precipitation should be soon, within 10 to 15 minutes! A moment later the ship computer's mechanical voice announces: "Jump Exit in approximately 10 minutes. Secure loose equipment and personal possessions. Please go to your designated stations and strap in." Somebody makes the old joke about putting your tray-tables in their upright positions...

And kabloom. Small type. A little lurch, a few seconds of vertigo. And... Normal Space!
OOC:
You've arrived in Jokotre system, right on the 100-diameter zone off the main planet. Navigator confirms position and projects a 6 hour run in to the class-B orbital port. You should make 'dock' at roughly 21:30, April 25, Imperial Year 1115.

First Question:
What happened to Lu-Yam?

As the ship emerges from jump space, Mama quickly repeats her earlier action upon entering jump space and checks the comfort and status of the high and medium passengers. After that she provides any medical needs for any ailments that the crew might have experienced. Once everyones needs are provided for, Mama checks in the cold storage passengers. Running a full diagnostics before setting the computers to start defrost at the appropriate time, Mama offers her assistance to any high or medium passengers needing pre departure assistance.

Roll for cold storage diagnostics and pre thaw actions
+1 can be added if help is offered

Captain LC Rains made his rounds like a man with a mission—and a smile. He kept things smooth with the passengers, ensuring they were well-fed, entertained, and comfortable. These weren’t just paying customers; they were well-dressed, ex-military types with the kind of quiet alertness that said "Smugg sent us." LC treated them with the kind of cordial charm that suggested he had nothing to hide and everything under control.

When not smoothing passenger relations, LC kept a light touch on ship operations—delegating efficiently through Tamm, TJ, and Said-Ma. He knew who needed a strong hand and who just needed a little encouragement. Still, by Day Three, he started checking in with the newer crew directly. After all, a well-oiled ship runs best when every cog fits cleanly.

To Alice (with a warm smile and a quick glance over the passenger manifest):

"Settling in alright?"

"Said-Ma treating you and Rin fairly, I trust? She's a firm one but fair—and hell of a medic."

"Any... quirks among our guests I should know about? Better to hear it now than have it blow up later."

To Leilani (LC leans against the frame of the reactor room, a grin tugging at his lips):

"Everything humming back here—or is our girl making strange noises again?"

"Tamm’s a bit of an acquired taste. You two bumping elbows or working in sync?"

"And hey, I value your eye—if there's anything worth fixing, upgrading, or avoiding before it breaks, let me know. I’d rather plan repairs than pay for them mid-jump."

To Rin (catching them near the cargo bay, tablet in hand):

"Rin, how’s your read on the passengers? Any favorites? Anyone you’d rather ship out an airlock?"

"And Said-Ma? You two seem to have hit a rhythm—just want to make sure it’s a smooth one, not masking any rough spots."

By Day Four, LC finds a quiet moment with Bronz—

Maybe it's near the engines, maybe over reheated coffee in the galley. LC doesn't bother with pretense.

"Bronz. You’ve been where they are—new, sizing up your place, figuring out if this crew's a family or a frying pan."

"So, tell me—what’s your honest read? How are they shaping up? Anyone we need to keep an eye on... or someone who's ready for more responsibility?"
OOC:
This post is meant to invite some light roleplay and open feedback among the crew. LC’s trying to do right by the ship, the job, and his people—but he knows he’s not the only one who sees the cracks or strengths in the deck plating.
May 22, 2025 2:24 am
When LC checks in with Tamm, he is literally hanging out in Engineering. Tamm's hammock is strung so he can see the main monitor and gently rock the hammock with the toe of his boots.

"Hello Captain. It's nice of you to drop in
"Yes, all of the new crew are competent and fitting in well."

Tamm picks up the synthetic ball from his lap and starts tossing it up and catching it on his way down. This has an (unfortunate?) effect of greatly speeding the cycle on the front of Tamm's Oaty-fruity Bars shirt. Tamm's new ship's coveralls are knotted around his waist.

"The passengers were definitely military trained. They might be retired, reserve or active military. But, you'd know more about the details of Smugg's ops than I would."
OOC:
I drew this conclusion myself. Tamm has a pretty sharp brain and he's Streetwise so I used it to make some more RP.

The four "technicians" headed to Jokotre's surface with the 50 tons of "machine parts" are pretty open regarding their backgrounds. The 40-ish brother and sister, Iggie & Marge Pilli, were both 'Army' with 20 years in, including war service during the 5th Frontier War. "I was in logistics, and 'sis' was Intel. With 6th Army headquartered at Lunion when the balloon went up. The 6th was involved in defense against the Sword World incursions and some elements got pretty well mauled. I was in the rear with the gear so...., but sis got some action."

Marge says: "Well, not much to tell, really. Interrogation team, trying to squeeze some info from EPWs. Wrong place, wrong time. Sometimes it works that way. Ended up on the other side of the coin, as it were. Their Intel trying to squeeze me! But by then it was pretty clear the Sword World forces were on their last legs so I think they went easy on us..."

Brucalli Shine and Uvi Theodoluck say they were Marines, ship's troops. Buddied up while on assignment on a Dreadnaught. "Mainly we looked pretty for the Admiral, you know."

All four found their ways to Fornice and found work with "Machines Are Us", a subsidiary of Smugg Orney Enterprises.

"We help set up and maintain manufacturing plants on mid-tech worlds. The factory on Jokotre is for batteries. Their electric grid has gotten better in recent years and its expected that they'll want electric vehicles of all sorts. And those things will need power-packs, right?"
May 22, 2025 3:29 am
Yu Min Tang is a young man, shy, and largely keeps to himself. At meals he listens but rarely adds to conversation. Leisure time is spent mostly in his stateroom, though he does use the sports simulator every day for an hour of gymnastics. "Brother-in-Law and sister are setting up a small business, a bakery, at Jokotre High Port. I have need for a job, and they offered. So here I go. I hope it all works out..."

Bronz stared blankly at LC for a moment, saying nothing. Back in his old life, when a captain started asking about the crew, it usually meant trouble—someone was getting spaced, or left behind. Best not to have an opinion, or at least pretend you didn’t.

But this was a different ship. A different kind of crew. He reminded himself as he quickly turned over the faces.

Rim—gruff, solid with a wrench. Bronz wasn’t sure how well he'd take to steward work or how the passengers would take to him. Leilani knew her way around a ship, no question, though her tendency to fill the silence took some getting used to. Alice, he didn’t know as well, but she seemed sharp and had a good sense for cargo. As for Lu-Yam—well, it was a shame to lose him, if only for the sheer absurdity of that broadsword. Still, maybe it was better if a ship told its own story, not one made up for it.

However, old instincts still clung to him and in the end, all he said was: "They’ll do. They know their jobs."
May 22, 2025 7:06 pm
As "Miss Fortune" moves in towards the planet, they should be contacting 'Space Traffic Control'.
OOC:
In future I'll at least some times roleplay this out. But under my current time constraint....(leaving for a week starting tomorrow!) I'm going to gloss over that bit of business.
Typically 'polite' to contact upon getting closer than 100-diameters, but required by Imperium Commerce Department regulation, is contacting 'control' before entering the 10-diameter zone.

"OK Miss Fortune, we have you on sensors at 96,000 klicks out. Approach path 7-mid, please. You are assigned docking station '4' on deck 17. Port Captain rep and Customs inspection will meet you there.

"You have traffic in your zone; two subbie liners outbound well clear to your 7 o'clock high and 9 o'clock. One outbound bulk freighter on parrallel course path 8-mid, watch for them as you may come as close as 100 klicks. Burgess Lines "Business as Usual" on ship-to-ship '2'.

"Welcome to Jokotre, Miss Fortune."
May 22, 2025 7:12 pm
LC took in Bronz’s words with a slow nod, letting the silence linger for a breath or two.

"They’ll do. They know their jobs," Bronz had said. And LC didn’t miss the way the man’s eyes had flicked away just before speaking.

"Appreciate the straight answer," LC said, his voice even, but with a calm undercurrent of sincerity. "And I get it—back on some ships, questions like that came with an airlock not too far behind for some unfortunate soul that did not deserve it."

He shifted his weight slightly, more casual now, arms folding across his chest.

"That’s not how I plan to run things here."

He gave Bronz a small, crooked smile, not quite a challenge—more a quiet promise.

"I don’t want silence when something’s off, and I don’t expect anyone to play politics to keep their berth. If you see a weakness in the crew, or in me, I’d rather hear it than have it fester."

There was no heat behind the words—just a steadiness born from someone who’d had to make too many decisions without the truth at hand.

"This ship only works if we’re honest with each other. Doesn’t have to be loud. Doesn’t have to be formal. Just has to be real."

He let that sit for a second, then offered a subtle nod of respect.

"You’ve got eyes, Bronz. And a quiet way of seeing through the noise. If something starts to slip, let me know. I’ll do the same."

And with that, he stepped back to give Bronz his space, letting the moment stay simple—direct, unforced, and grounded in the kind of trust that takes time to earn.

Welcome back
May 23, 2025 3:05 am
Bronz met LC’s gaze without flinching. There came a moment when you had to decide whether or not to trust someone—and maybe this was it. He’d been watching LC long enough to know: he wasn’t the kind to space someone.

"Ay. I’ll let you know," he said quietly.

After a brief pause, he added, "They’re a good crew."

Then, with the faintest smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth: "Don’t screw them up."
May 23, 2025 5:12 am
'Miss Fortune" decelerates as it closes on Jokotre High Port. The class-B facility is smaller than the main orbital station at Fornice, but still impressive. The docking rings have multiple starships nestled in, but there look like a good number are empty. Some 'hangar' type docks are on a lower deck; no telling if those are occupied or not. Edging towards the assigned spot (Deck 17, dock 4) an enclosed grav-vehicle flies over. It sports a large brightly lit "Follow Me!" display, and it guides the ship in the last 750 meters until a 'hard lock' is established.

As promised, the Port Captain representative arrives almost immediately, checks and signs off on the log-book, and asks if the crew need assistance from Port Control. He reminds that the 100cr wharfage fee needs paying promptly. "You're headed to the surface, are you? Well good luck, then. Be careful. Customs will give you the information you need. Well, most of the information you need..."

A Customs/Immigration inspection team arrives a few minutes after the departure of the Port Captain Rep. They check passenger documents first; only the middle-passenger is debarking at the orbital. "We'll need to get permissions from the government before you can go dirtside to a non-standard destination." Marge Pilli shows their documentation from "Machines Are Us/Smugg Orney Enterprises" and the agent nods agreeably. "That'll help, but you're still in for a wait of 3 or 4 days."

Cargo and Freight inspections go smoothly. The 6 tons of general freight is claimed by its owners, and arrangements are made for off-loading the next day. The 50 dTons of 'special freight' and the 4 technicians remain aboard waiting until they can get dirt-side.
OOC:
I suggest that the crew starts divding tasks. You might look into available cargoes for the several destinations within Jump-2. Look at passenger demand, Low and High. You can't actually book passengers or take on freight until you file a jump-plan, but you can do some information gathering before that. Your main resource is the Traveller-Wiki, which can be accessed through the Traveller Map. I won't spoon feed you that information; you need to gather the information yourselves and discuss your best course of action. By the time I return hopefully you've made some progress on this front!

Who is Purser?
I don't have enough time to play that role.

Since Jokotre is a Theocratic Yellow Zone, Tamm will play it safe and refrain from using his Streetwise skills to look for passengers, cargo or companionship.
On the way in to the Orbital, Tamm asks the members of the Engineering Team to complete the post-Jump systems checks. This should be a quick process since there are at least three Sophants available. Tamm pitches in, too.

The Miss Fortune drops into her final approach with a deep, humming resonance that travels through her deckplates like the purr of a satisfied beast.

LC Rains, standing behind the pilot’s seat with one hand braced lightly on the backrest, squints out the forward viewport. Jokotre High Port looms ahead—industrial, bristling with antennas, hangar bays, and gantries. The starfield warps behind it, curling around the edges of the orbital like dust funneling into a drain.

He adjusts the collar of his jacket and leans in toward Tharrok.
"Let’s make it clean, pilot. They don’t need to remember us for our docking."
It’s said with an edge of humor, but LC watches the approach like a hawk.

As the proximity alert pings, a grav-vehicle approaches, its hull gleaming with port-side reflectors. The sign pulses: "FOLLOW ME!"

"Well, now they roll out the welcome mat." LC murmurs, toggling the comm.
"High Port Control, this is Free Trader Miss Fortune, transponder F-MF-387-A7, acknowledging grav-guide. Following to Dock 17, Bay 4. ETA—90 seconds. Appreciate the assist." Referring to the Port Authority Grav-Vehicle.

He taps the console with two fingers and glances over his shoulder.
"Tamm—double-check our docking ring seals and pressure tolerances. Bronz, Lei—stand by engineering interlocks. If the clamps hiss louder than they ought to, I want your hands on it."

A brief smile touches his lips as the docking ring begins to extend ahead.

"Said-Ma, give our med-bay a once-over—nothing says inspection bait like an unsecured medscanner."

LC leaves the bridge and makes his way down to the docking bay. Once there seeing Alice and Rin already preparing for connections, he raises a brow toward Alice and Rin as the port rotates into view.
"Alice, feel like charming our new neighbors? Once we’re hard docked, you’re with me to meet the port reps. Rin, stand by to assist. Let’s give them our best face—genuine smiles, polished boots."

A tremble echoes through the ship as the final maneuvering thrusters flare. Miss Fortune aligns smoothly and the sound of hydraulic clamp engagement rolls through the hull with a satisfying CLUNK-KSHHH. The green lights shift across the main console.

"Docking confirmed. Hard seal engaged. We’re in, folks." LC states the obvious to Alice, Rin and the rest of the crew.

Moments later, the airlock cycles, hissing open as the Port Captain’s representative steps aboard—trim uniform, data-tablet in hand, and eyes already scanning the ship’s interior.

LC greets him with practiced warmth.
"Welcome aboard the Miss Fortune. I am LC Rains, the Captina of this ship, this here is 2nd Office Alice Petrov and Steward Rin Bauer. All ship’s records and logbook are in order." He hands over the dataslate.
OOC:
Does Alice or Rin want to say anything??
The rep nods, signs without much delay, and offers a tight smile.
"You’re paid up on your 100-credit wharfage, I hope?"
"Already transmitted," LC replies. "We believe in swift settlements."

The man snorts faintly.
"Heading planetside, I hear. Well... good luck down there. Customs will give you what they can. But Jokotre’s full of corners no map marks clearly. Watch yourselves."

As the official turns away, LC looks back over the crew gathered near the entryway, giving them a nod.

"All right, crew. Docking’s complete. Start the standard post-lock checks, then prepare for in-port rotations. Anyone needs direction, find me. Let’s make this stop efficient—and profitable."

He lets that hang in the air a moment before adding,
"Also… nobody touch anything glowing, humming, or labeled in a dialect you don’t read."
May 23, 2025 8:24 pm
LC stood in the galley-turned-briefing-space with a cup of tea that had long gone cold. The Miss Fortune thrummed gently in its berth on Deck 17, dock 4 of Jokotre High Port, and the air already smelled of recirculated bureaucracy.

He looked around the assembled crew—some seated, others leaning against bulkheads or sipping recaf. His tone was steady, clipped but not harsh, projecting the quiet command of someone who expected things to get done without shouting.

"All right, folks—here’s the lay of the deck for Day One."

He tapped the ship’s tablet, calling up a basic task roster and pushing it to the wall screen.

"First off: no Liberty today. We’re in active port operations, and we’ve got too many plates in the air. Full Crew status, all hands. If it goes smooth, we’ll rotate Liberty starting tomorrow."

He nodded toward Tamm, arms crossed near the door.

"Tamm—take lead on full ship inspection. I want all engineering stations walked, power levels logged, atmosphere and environmental balances confirmed, and report any wear we didn’t log last jump. Coordinate with Leilani and Bronz. Treat it like we’re prepping for re-entry, even if we don’t get the clearance."

He tapped the pad again.

"Speaking of which—our priority task is obtaining a Flight Permission—’Trade Benediction,’ they call it here—to descend to the surface. That means getting through the local religious protocols." He gave a dry half-smile.

"Said-Ma, and Alice—talk to the Station’s posted Sanctifier or Canon-Pilot, whoever’s on duty today. You’ll probably find them adjacent to the Office of Stellar Ethics—keep it polite, keep it clean. See if our documentation from Smugg Enterprises helps. If not, smile, nod, and figure out what they want for a blessing."

He paused, looking around, eyes scanning for Alice, then Said-Ma.

"Said-Ma, Alice—once that’s rolling, I want you on the Merchant Guide Boards. Look for available ready freight, especially short-haul or 'easy off' cargo we can pick up without long clearance. Anything low-risk we can book today, we’ll take. Check passenger boards too—see if anyone’s looking for passage dirtside or outbound. I want to move quickly if we get a jump window."

LC reached for his tea, reconsidered, then let it sit.

"And last—but important—I want crew input on the next jump target. We’ve got a couple trade routes open from here. I need suggestions based on what cargo types we’re aiming to buy here for resale. Give me options, not just favorites—Bronz, you know the drive, think about range. Rin, think of provisioning needs. Everyone else—look at market indexes or rumors on the board. I’ll put a full options brief together before Day Three."

He gave a final nod to the crew.

"Questions? If not—get to it. Let’s make this stop count."

Sort of built this post to gain character interaction. We could start a OCC thread to discuss the jump points and Systems types and potential profitable cargo type. So thoughts on the OCC Thread to discuss Jump to the other Systems??? or keep the discussion in this thread in-Character?

"Aye, Captain." Tamm performs the docking station checks as LC requested.

When the inspectors arrive, they find Tamm in his ship's coveralls, no Oaty Fruity or any of his other "unique" shirts are visible. Even his shipboard boots are clean and have a bit of shine.

Tamm listens to the Captain's instructions and when the meeting breaks up, Tamm goes to Engineering to review the diagnostics.

Ugh - I was doing the math and we took it in the shorts by getting the last 6 tons in general cargo. [ooc]Ugh - I was doing the math and we took it in the shorts by getting the last 6 tons in general cargo. After going through Book 7 (LBB), I learned that Fornice being a higher tech level that Jokotre, there is usually a profit for speculative cargo. With a character with Broker skill, and at a skill level two, at a minimum an actual value of 5 at a minimum, so that is 80% value. Considering speculative cargo on Fornice can be procured at 3200 Cr per ton and sold to a TL 7 world at a base price of 7500 Cr, that is profit that we need to look into. Even at actual value roll of 5 equates to 80% value that 7500 Cr becomes 6000 Cr minus the 600 Cr Broker fee results in 5400 Cr per ton or a profit of (5400 minus 3200 = 2200 Cr per ton. It only goes up from there! Of course snake eyes is still snake eyes resulting in 40% value, there is a loss of 500 Cr per ton. 1 out of 12 chance, heck I think we need to load up on passengers and turn around and get more speculative cargo from Fornice and sell to the lower tech worlds. LC looks over the cargo Manifest one last time
https://i.imgur.com/AGRQ7cw.png
May 25, 2025 9:49 pm
Bronz studies the star charts in silence, eyes narrowing slightly. Half a dozen worlds in jump range—but none with the tech or infrastructure they just left behind.

He turns to LC and the others. "We thinking about setting up somewhere solid, like Fornice? Or just picking a direction and seeing what kind of fortune shakes loose?"
May 26, 2025 2:26 am
LC rests a hand on the edge of the galley table, studying the holographic star map as it slowly rotates above the display.

"You're not wrong, Bronz," he says after a pause. "There’s wisdom in both paths—and risk in each too."

He glances around at the others.

"Setting up a regular route—say, a circuit between Fornice and a handful of dependable systems—means steady credits. Not flashy, but reliable. Contracts you can count on, relationships you can build. Bit by bit, that sort of work keeps the ship running, and the shares growing."

He turns to Bronz, one brow raised, the corner of his mouth twitching in a faint smile.

"But I think what you’re asking is... do we want to live a little while we’re doing it."

LC then scratches his temple and then looks at the star map displayed above the table in the crew galley area, in three dimensional display projection for everyone to see.

"We could do both if we plan it right..."

Looking at the crew
"We could use the main route picking up multiple speculative cargo sets in 5 ton packages and sell those to low tech worlds, where it is profitable."

"A circuit sounds safe but I don't want to be a privately owned subbie if you all follow. If we pick up spec cargo, we can branch off of our route to sell on lower tech works along it.
If we can manage the turn around, Miss Fortune could offer expedited shipping. We might be able to shave a couple of days off the trip which might be important to some shippers. We'd charge a premium and it would save us a few days' docking charges."
May 26, 2025 7:08 pm
LC nods slowly as Tamm finishes, arms folded, weight shifted slightly to one hip as the star map continues to spin lazily behind him.

"I follow, Tamm. And you're not wrong—there’s a fine line between running a trade circuit... and becoming someone else’s haulage drone."
He offers a faint grin.
"Rest assured, I’ve got no interest in flying under anyone’s corporate flag or getting shackled to contracts that call us by the number, not the name. We built this crew to choose where we go."

He pauses, then tilts his head slightly toward the engineer.

"Now, your idea about expedited shipping—that’s got teeth." He taps the holo, zooming the map to show a three-world loop.
"If we can lock down reliable turnaround times, and some worlds along the route are lean on local haulers, we could absolutely carve out a niche. Charge premium rates for priority freight, maybe even passengers with urgent business. That’s real value."

He lifts a hand, cautious now.

"But here’s where the grind hits: most of our in-port time isn’t just cargo handling, it’s cargo hunting."
"Alice—what’s your take? If we rush the clock to cut down port time, does that kneecap our ability to find good spec cargo? Or do you think there's room to do both?"

**He turns slightly toward Said-Ma, giving her a brief nod.
"Same question to you, Ma—from the purser’s perspective. How tight can we run dockside operations without bleeding into the profit margins? You’ve seen our resupply bills."

LC shrugs lightly, the gesture thoughtful.

"And then there’s Jump time. We could run triple shifts in dock, skip Liberty, grease every port hand from here to Fornice—and we’d still be at the mercy of seven days in Jump. No shortcuts in hyperspace, sadly."

He looks back to Tamm, voice steady.

"That said—if we can optimize our turnaround, if we plan cargo flows a jump ahead, if we use the circuit not to be bound by it but to outpace the others flying it... then yeah, we can carve out something sharp and profitable. Just gotta be realistic about the limits—and clever about bending around them."

His gaze shifts to Bronz and Rin now.

"You’ve worked both sides of the hold, Bronz. From your view in engineering—and cargo—does Tamm’s expedited plan look doable? Rin, you worked both cargo too, taking care of the passengers and cooking up that mean lasagna. Or are we cutting corners that might not survive a rough landing?"

Then to Tharrok, with a flick of a grin.

"And Tharrok, you're the one who has to fly her and deal with orbital traffic and burn windows. If we try to run lean and fast, do you think the ship—and the crew—can keep pace without pushing too far?"

He then looks at Leilani
"Leilani do you have any thoughts?"

He glances around the room, then finally says:

"Everyone here’s got skin in the game. Let’s hear it. If we’re building a plan, I want every voice in the loop."
May 26, 2025 7:42 pm
"I hadn't considered running to backwater worlds but, the idea has merit.
Yeah, J-time & light speed are solid limits but maybe, we could put out feelers for cargo & passengers for the next time we're in a port before leaving it. I think if the manufacturers know when we will be back in port, they would plan their shipments a couple of weeks in advance.
We should consider developing a steady customer base. Say we get cargo & passengers on Fornice. We can negotiate prices for shipping the next lot with us as long as we can establish a name & reputation for Miss Fortune.

The old crew might be surprised by how much Tamm is participating in the conversations compared to when Dolores Biga was aboard. Or perhaps not; the crew certainly noticed that Tamm & Biga spoke together quite frequently. Early on, the old crew may have thought Tamm & Biga had a thing going on but the goodbye on Fornice looked like they are just friends.
OOC:
For the new players, Dolores Biga was a character played by my wife. Biga was the Steward aboard the ATHELSTONE but I made the posts for her. Circumstances changed so my wife isn't playing any longer.

LC offers a short nod, the kind that comes from genuine agreement rather than habit.

"Now that’s forward thinking, Tamm." He taps the corner of the holoscreen, highlighting the route they’d been discussing.

"A rolling manifest system—start putting out feelers before we even break orbit. Establishing a reputation not just for delivery, but consistency—that’s what builds trust with buyers and shippers alike. If Fornice knows Miss Fortune is coming back in three weeks, and they’ve got goods that need moving—well, we stop being a risk and start being a solution."

He shifts his weight slightly, eyes sweeping the room.

"Alice, you’re in the perfect position to float the idea with brokers and buyers. If we can build a handshake network—three or four worlds with known players—we can reduce downtime, negotiate better cargo lots, and even push return contracts. Cargo in, cargo out."

He glances to Said-Ma.

"Ma, you’ll want to start tracking reliability metrics—on-time arrival, claims, fuel usage. If we’re going to become someone’s go-to ship, we’ll need the data to back up the pitch. Numbers are the sharpest part of any sales blade."

He turns back to Tamm, a thoughtful expression crossing his face.

"We’ll have to walk a line, though—can’t let bookings lock us into routes so tight we can’t respond to opportunity. But if we frame it right? Miss Fortune gets known not just as a Free Trader—but as a ship people wait for."

He pauses, grin returning just slightly.

"Not bad for a bunch of ‘wanderers,’ yeah?"

Looking around at the crew
"I know the rest of you have some ideas, lets hear them..."

This is great work and will definitely help in analyzing our choices.

Just a few random comments looking over these.

It seems a lot of systems near us are low populations, which might mean there is less traffic there but it might be specialized cargos that would have any value. Also, any system that is low population and poor I would find it highly unlikely we could make much money off it so I would avoid Nadrin. I'm also wondering if Catuz has any value.

One other note is if we make Fornice a "base" then any of the further out runs would require trips through either Mora or Jokotre. Trips between Fornice and Mora are probably going to be heavily travelled runs so more difficult to get anything other than common cargo unless we can create an advantage for ourselves.
May 28, 2025 5:07 am
LC smiles at her reply, "That is good to hear that you are thinking that way. What do you think about the procurement of cargo handling droids? You know, to speed up the cargo handling process??[/quote]

I think that would be a great idea. It would mean that we don't have to wait for the dock support to load or unload. The droids could be automated to remove an item and when room allows, to start loading until completed. That should make quick work of the process.

Leilani was silent for a little longer than she should have, staring at an unremarkable star before snapping back to attention.

"That little dot is home, Mora, somewhere I've not been back to for a long while!" She gave a little breath before adding

"Sorry Cap'n, I promise I don't normally get homesick, must be because this is all new! What do you need from me right now boss?"

An observation & a note

I'm starting to see Miss Fortune running parallel to a RL independent trucker. (Muns, are you with Logistics?)

Our home base can be anywhere. If we have to make a jump to an intermediate system on our way anywhere, we might want to reconsider home base. If we change home port, let's find a spot where we can buy & sell at each stop. IDK if there will be a chance to make profit from the backwater planets but, it might be since not many ships go to the backwater.
(I don't have the star map with me so any thing from Tamm will have to wait.)

An additional thought might be worth our time to think about ...

Sometimes as an independent, you come across loads that are small, say left over products... Because of this most are not interested. They need to go somewhere in order to make room for more profitable product to be warehoused. If these can be gotten at Rock bottom prices to get rid of them and we have a warehouse at a "halfway there planet"... We could warehouse it there until we get enough for a full loaded to the next system out...

This could allow us to collect products for two jumps out, so that we have a full load waiting for us.

Ware housing until the price goes up could be done in any planets we do business with.

Looking at Tamm LC replies;
"I think you are correct in looking at a home base, I am more incline with Bronz (nodding towards Bronz) to have one base for now to make money. While I agree with Bronz about Fonice, Leilani has a point about Mora. While Mora is the capital and will have more oversight, it has a high population so there will be a lot of cargo availability and Mora cargo sells to the Tech seven worlds at a profit."

Looking at Leilani
"We can use your contacts at your home world of Mora. Can you send a X-boat message back to your contacts on Mora to set-up some cargo and get some time at home? The message will beat us by three to four days but that should be enough time to get the word out with any contacts you have."
OOC:
Reply??
Looking at Alice;
"I don't know if we can drum up anything remotely profitable to move to Fornice or Mora from Jokotre. "
pause
"But, see what you can do to find us standard freight cargo back to either Mora or Fornice so our hold is not empty and we at least get paid for the fuel to travel back. How does that sound?"

Looks at the crew
"I think that since speculative cargo from Jokotre is not going to sell well at either Fornice or Mora and will just break even at the tech level seven worlds, so for the return trips, lets just stick to standard freight and or mail. Is everyone okay with that?"

Looking at Said-Ma
"Ma-Ma can you work the cargo loading droids and find out what is possible here?"
LC pauses and then turns to Said-Ma
"And drum up some high passengers to see if anyone wants to go to Mora or Fornice. Okay?"

LC then turns to Tamm and Rin
"I figure you two have your hands full with the cargo handling and powerplant checks getting the ship ready for planet side trip to deliver the cargo and passengers for Smugg Orney Enterprises."

to the entire crew
"Okay one passenger is off loaded and some cargo, lets arraign for cargo and passengers and see what is best, Fornice or Mora and see which wins, okay? Also if you need help looking don't forget to ask anyone else in the crew, me included!"

Looing around
LC asks everyone
"Has anyone seen Decherrek?"
OOC:

There are no robots listed publicly 'for sale' at Jokotre, and of course there's only the most primitive of local 'robot' manufacture.
There are a couple of 'junkers' listed at private orbital stations; contacting them gets one possibility. "Gems and Junk" advertises Starship Upgrades & Repairs, Equipment, and Embellishment. Their 'rep' says they have a Ling Standard model 7 cargo handler bot, fully programmable, asking price 70,000cr, weighs 500kg, will require 1 dTon space in the cargo hold.

2-quiry: High and low passengers for Mora or Fornice

No High Passengers on the public boards. Plenty of low passengers. Getting High Passengers takes more effort than a computer search!

3-quiry: any outgoing Speculative cargo

What sort of cargo are you looking for? TravellerWiki and TravellerMap have the same information I would use to determine this. Go For It! Look at the planet description, at least...

4-quiry: mail cargo

You need a mail contract and a specified scheduled route. Sometimes there might be 'overflow', but not findable with a computer search.

5-quiry: Standard freight to any where

Lots of standard freight to Mora and Fornice. Other destinations are listed on the board periodically but get scooped up within an hour or so every time. Again, a local broker or other information source would help.

Pretty disappointed that no 'possible' cargos were discussed.

So here's my 'take' given the small bits of information available on the wiki: Religious Art, Icons, "artifacts". Natural Resources such as crystals, lumber, wild game (exotic pets, meat products), Exotic plants, Gypsum, Aluminum ore, basic manufactured goods (tech 7).

Resources are listed as "abundant" and there is a decent sized workforce in place.

My imagination isn't always up to the task! So I was really hoping your collective imaginations might help out.

All OOC
Gang,
This is all my fault and not yours. I should have organized better so we could discuss the potential cargo. We do have new players and it seems, at least to me, that they are trying to figure the game and the setting out as new players. I should have provided more guidance or direction. I apologize.

I might have dorked this up by posting to much and trying to suggest what to do. I also dug a lot into Book 07 'Merchant Prince' to ensure I understood the speculative trading, but I totally

FAILED

So looking at the wiki where in the forth post for Interstellar Commerce spells it out actions the players could have taken to look for cargo.

I should have known and did not catch that.

I thought we were just using LBB 07 for trading and this lead my to my error and framed all of my work, the posting of my character, towards that end. I failed to read what David wrote and take it in when he went on his trip:
"What sort of goods might you find on Jokotre that might be desired elsewhere? Look at the Traveller Wiki and think about it, speculate some."

In character I sent some instructions and they were the wrong instructions. Us senior players , myself mainly, knew David cautioned us that not everything is on the Merchant trading guild boards and it is better to consult with a local Broker.

So the fault is mine as the player of the Captain character and I will try to remedy this.

Sorry about this

LC looks at Alice and Said-Ma and says
"Go and find a broker and see what type of standard freight, you can find to move Fornice."

Looking at "Tamm, Rin, Leilani and Bronz
" Fan out into The Star port, since we're going to be stuck here for 3 to 4 days and find out what you can on cargo
that could be shipped as far as cargo to Fornice. Look for the unusual and exotic. Try not to get set up by some shady Art collector dealer, looking to offload some religious artifacts. Use your common sense when evaluating these prospects."

"I am going to what passes here for information on raw materials."

" Everyone cannot go off to the 4 corners of this high port. So, figure out among yourselves in engineering and commerce divisions, so one person stays here while the others go out searching for potential cargo. I want this ship manned by no less than two people at all times."

When LC leaves the ship, he goes to what passes as the high port Commodity exchange and sees who is working there. He asks around for who are good broker of commodies and who to stay away from. He then goes to the exchnge listings and scans down the list and looks up their reputation of several offices and picks a commodity broker that has medium to low reputation. He then goes to that office to introduce himself to find out what cargoes are available. He then repeats this process at a couple other commodity brokers to assess what can be procured, and what is out of question.

" Hi, there, my name is Louis Rains. I'm the Captain of a small, far trader, the Miss Fortune and I'm looking for some cargo to move and I was wondering, what is available and what kind of deals do you have right now."

EDIT

Bronz casts a questioning glance toward LC. Asking around for off-world cargo wasn’t his kind of work—even back in his shadier days, he’d kept his head in the engine room, making sure they could lift off in a hurry if things went south. The "business" side of things had always been someone else’s problem.

Still, this was different. They had a ship to run now. Legit, or close enough. And it wouldn’t hurt to get a feel for the locals—see how deep the religion ran, and how they treated outsiders.

"Yeah, I’m game," he said, pushing off the bulkhead. "Anyone want to tag along, or we spreading out and bringing back whatever we find?"
