Questioning Halav

Jun 10, 2025 4:37 am
The rain had lightened to a mist, but the sky remained a dull, unbroken grey. You make steady progress along the Duke's road, the mighty Windrush river always to your left. There is no immediate threat, and hours left on the march. Might as well kill the time with some conversation...
OOC:
opening a thread, because Boudica wanted to question 'Halav', and I don't want it to interrupt the main thread.
@WhiteDwarf - the spirit that talked to you before is an ever-present companion. You can ask him questions at any point in time.

As the groups that afternoon, Boudica walks beside Will. They walk for a time in silence until Boudica speaks. "Will. I must admit some envy of you, getting to speak to Halav occasionally. Does he appear often, or only when he chooses? By the Faith, I would like to ask him some questions! If ...wait, can you ... ask him some questions for me? If it's not imposing..."

I only spoke with the spirit once, and then he spoke to me briefly another time since. But yes, we can certainly try. I feel like he’ll respond if I try to reach him.
Jun 10, 2025 10:51 am
Boudica nods, trying to keep her head about her. She privately wonders if Will is really speaking to THE Halav, or if this is some trick perpetrated by the Hags. So she decides to put it to the test, to the best of her ability.

Boudica considers for a moment and then asks a question of history that she is confident Will could not answer, but the real Halav could.
OOC:
I don't want to hunt down the Karameikos book to do research on the Faith, for fear of spoilers, and the info here on the Faith is general enough that Will likely knows it all. So I'll keep the "quizzing" questions general and abstract, though Boudica will ask some more concrete questions in a moment, if that's ok.

Will replies pensively with, Ok. Here it goes.

Our fightery fellow closes emerald eyes. He briefly sees himself in a different light. Momentarily fantasizing what it would be like…to be a diety. To have such power. Then, bringing himself back to present, he takes a breath, and tries asking Boudica’s questions. First, telepathically so…and then, if no immediate reply from the spirit, he asks verbally.

And our fightery fellow awaits spiritual reply and guidance, with clenched gauntleted fist.

Will hears a voice talking in his mind when he poses the question. But the more he asks, the stronger the voice gets, and soon, the figment of the warrior materializes next to him, though again, he is the only one who can actually see him.
OOC:
@Drgwen: The Traladaran Faith isn’t an organized religion in the way the Thyatian faith is. There’s no central authority, codified doctrine, or priests issuing dogma. At its core, the faith centers around the Traladaran Trinity, Halav, Petra, and Zirchev, each representing ideals for people to live by. The Song of Halav, a long epic poem, tells the mythic story of King Halav’s struggle against the beastmen, and that’s about as close as it gets to "scripture." Beyond that, interpretation is up to the individual. Most Traladarans grow up hearing the stories, but what they take from them is personal.

The religion is, broadly speaking, libertarian in spirit: believe what you wish, live how you will, so long as you don’t harm others. It’s more a cultural fabric than a structured institution.

Therefore, it is next to impossible to 'test' the spirit. But it can answer specific questions, if you have any

Boudica asks, "If you are Halav returned, or re-born, what of Petra and Zirchev?" And, she asks, "Who was the knight guarding your tomb? Do you know?"
Jun 11, 2025 3:37 am
The figment talks to Will again "Zirchev is never far away, remember? He is the one who exists at the edge, where the wild meets the world of men. Zirchev knows what is hidden. He is the shadow that sees all paths branch out beneath him. Cunning. Sly. He stayed on this earth to look after us. And if you listen carefully, you can hear him calling for you" he pauses, then continues a moment later "Petra awaits you at Lav"

He then actually answers the last question in detail, without hinting anything, or adding needless poetic prose: "That would be Dragomir. He waited for you for a thousand years. He waits no more"

Will relates spirit-minded accounts to his clerical friend. Occasionally stumbling over words, trying to get the spirit’s answer just right, even if our fightery fellow perhaps doesn’t grasp it fully.
Spirit, where specifically in Lav will we find Queen Petra?
Jun 11, 2025 3:42 pm
Boudica nods when she learns the identity of the ancient knight. Then she remains silent, as she awaits the answer to Will's question with bated breath.
Jun 11, 2025 3:45 pm
"Petra is hidden in Lav. You, Halav, will show us the way when we get there" the spirit has the utmost faith in Will.
Jun 11, 2025 3:49 pm
Boudica shrugs and turns to Will. She says, "OK then. I guess I'll follow you. But tell me true, do you believe yourself to be some reincarnation or avatar of Halav?"
Jun 11, 2025 5:45 pm
I want to believe. But I don’t know that I’m Halav any more than you are.
Jun 11, 2025 6:18 pm
"No, how can you say that?!?" The spirit looks not quite angry, and more offended by Will's lack of faith "How do you expect anyone to believe you are Halav, if you go around saying stuff like that? How do you expect to rally humanity behind you? How do you expect to lead them against the Beastmen? You will doom us all with your self-doubt. At least pretend! Now, say it like you mean it: "'I AM Halav!'"
Jun 11, 2025 7:04 pm
Boudica, I feel like the spirit is telling me, I in fact AM Halav. I don’t feel like I am, but then again - I’ve never been a legendary diety before, so I probably wouldn’t know.
I don’t want to harbor mixed feelings, or voices chastising me, so let us simply go on the premise, I AM indeed Halav.
Jun 12, 2025 11:10 am
Boudica sighs and nods. She says, "I have no way to verify whether you are or not. The barrow certainly could have been Halav's final resting place, and that could have been his sword. And that ancient knight was certainly real. So I think it is possible. Only time will tell. For now, yes, I too will go along with it, until proven otherwise. Thank you for letting me interrogate him, er, you about this."

Miyana, who has been only half-listening, rolls her eyes and gives a silent harrumph.
