OOC Character Creation Thread

Jun 12, 2025 5:31 pm
This thread will be used exclusively during the character creation process.

Please talk about your character concepts, their Skills, their Talents, their Powers, etc. if you would like to, so that the group has a diverse skill set - IF that is important to you - and so that I can understand what you're "going for" and inform your thoughts and process if needed.

We'll also roll for the initial Destiny Pool here.

Just realized I should post the Character Creation guidance here (in addition to the game page):

1. Please use Force & Destiny Careers and Specializations for character creation (Species can be from any published book), following standard character creation process
> PLUS we will be using the "Jedi Knight"-start rules (+150 XP, spendable post-chargen, plus 9,000 creds/or Lightsaber)

2. We could have 1, maybe 2, non-Force Users if that is for some reason more interesting to a couple of you. But they must fit the campaign premise - a Republic Droid, a Clone Trooper, or some sort of Diplomatic Attaché are all plausible. If you have other concepts that fit the general premise, feel free to propose them.

But I do want to caveat that this campaign will feature heavy "Force themes", and so non-Force sensitives may kind of miss out on some things.

3. Force Sensitive character concepts should reflect a character that is a Youngling or (new) Padawan OR a member of the Jedi Service Corps (Google them, this opens it to to concepts way beyond a Lightsaber-wielding space wizard).

4. (ONLY) HOUSE RULE: No Characteristic may be ranked higher than 4 during character creation phase.

I am busting out my books tonight but I am sort of thinking of a young niave padawan type.

Could we use non Force and Destiny species? Or just core book stuff?
Jun 13, 2025 12:35 pm
I am thinking either a headstrong padawan Warrior or a more laid back Healer (from the Counsular career). Will see what other come up with as well.
Jun 13, 2025 1:11 pm
So far I have an idea for a sort of bookish, knowledge skill focused Padawan (possibly sage from consular or even just the padawn tree from the clone wars books if that's allowed) but I'm not fully comitted to it yet.

Species from any official published book is allowed.

Careers/Specs from Force & Destiny only please (or a Jedi Service Corps concept could conceivably do a Force sensitive Universal Spec too).

Despite the timeline, I'm taking the Jedi Career tree out of it, as I'm hoping that's a "soft" way to encourage more diverse skillsets and concepts.
Jun 13, 2025 8:44 pm
Looking at the Agressor talent tree, and how will you rule talents that automatically gives a Conflict at the beginning of each session?
Jun 13, 2025 9:19 pm
Probably no great/definite answer for you.

For Talents like that and the general 1d10 Morality rolls (and new Destiny Pool etc), a session will be considered concluded/began when it "feels right" to me.

Roughly that would probably be whenever we finish something "big and important", and/or so that enough gameplay has taken place that Conflict has had the opportunity to be accumulated.

Whatever is necessary to drive compelling gameplay around the dynamics that hinge upon it.

Any and all of that.

Clear as mud probably, sorry :P

I submited a character. It's not quite done, lots of tinkering and prettying it up still to do. But I suddenly realized it was past 2 am so about time to go to bed :P

Can recommend oggdude's character creator to those that don't know about it. Made making the character a breeze, just getting it over to gamersplane that took time.

I've got two character concepts I'm tossing up between - and since you all are going to play alongside them, I thought I'd ask the group which you guys find more interesting.

Cor, a clone who has a triple zero in his designation, so his brother's named him after Coruscant since that's it's coordinates. Dipping into Legends, Cor's adopted bits of Mandalorian culture picked up from Mandalorians who helped train the older clones. I don't know if that's still canon, but Rex and a few others have those markings on their armor so it's still implied at least.
He's developed a cynical sense of humor, is gruff but fiercely protective of the "Shinies" under his command and padawans and unlike most clones actually took the time to learn about the ideals of the Republic - since that's what they're supposed to be fighting for.

For why he doesn't go through with Order 66 - maybe he was originally an Arc Trooper of Republic Commando, who were trained to be more independent and creative with how they follow orders. But mostly, he got some shrapnel to the head in a recent battle, maybe the Battle of Coruscant, which damaged his bio-chip.

Or

Kel Tarren, an older padawan in his late teens. Seeker - Ataru Striker. Kel's spent most of his time as a padawan at war, and got really close with the clones under his Master's command. He's picked up their attitudes, their in-jokes and their pragmatic views of violence and war. Kel's also a bit of an Anakin Skywalker fan-boy. His master sent him on this diplomatic mission with Master Barouk because she's worried Kel is on the edge of falling to the Dark Side, and she hopes Barouk can help ease Kel back into balance.

I do think the opportunity for a non-Force character is an interesting one in this campaign, and could really help "ground" it, and really even make it feel more Star Wars-y.

The one thing I will say, though it is not a deal-breaker, is that it can make it harder for me to meaningfully implement the Morality mechanic with mixed groups (as the non-Force user may be able to "offload" at least some of any dirty work that might pop up). And the Morality mechanic can already be hard to implement meaningfully.

That said, I want you to play a character that interests you for the arc of the story.

And yes, something like this:
Quote:
But mostly, he got some shrapnel to the head in a recent battle, maybe the Battle of Coruscant, which damaged his bio-chip.
... would probably have to be in the concept somewhere.
Jun 14, 2025 1:52 pm
@emsquared If I did go with the clone, how should I build them?
emsquared says:

I think offloading dirty work like that IC could still count - "just giving orders/making requests" is even less of an excuse morally than "just following orders."
And OoC, that could possibly work for some character stuff. I could see Trip reacting with "They have to learn to do these things themselves" and actively pushing/encouraging the other PCs into doing morally questionable but practical things if he ends up doing a lot of the dirty work.

Heh, yes, good question, sorry I should have thought about that before now 😆

Ummm, I think you can use basically whatever Career/Spec you want, that creates a Clone Trooper-looking character.

Obviously the Clone Wars erabooks' Clone Soldier Career works well for that. But if you wanted to use the Edge Bounty Hunter Career and Spec into Gadgeteer, and/but still skin then as a Clone Trooper? I'm fine with that too. Or if you like what an AoR Commander/Tactitian does, and just want to skin that as a Clone Trooper? I think that works too.

Magically Basically just follow the character creation process as normal and use a Career and Spec that yields the character you want, so long as they still look like a Clone a trooper c/should when you're done.

Some of you may have noticed, I had the incorrect Knight Level bonus cred amount listed up above. I had just written that from memory, and that value was a mistake.

We will use the +9000 creds (or Lightsaber), as written.

I'm also re-reading the Mortality rules for the first time in many years, and realizing that a lot of things I remembered as being what the rules said, I am not finding written anywhere.

So although I still intend to implement Morality more or less as written, I do need to talk about how/where I view it differently than the book.

You can find that in the OOC Resource Thread, if you have not already. And I am revising some of the talking points if you did read that bit already.
Jun 15, 2025 9:22 am
Would would the age range for padawan characters be here?
Jun 15, 2025 2:18 pm
Basically whatever you want, up to young adult, I guess?

Just can't have you guys being full Jedi cuz then you'd be a General and probably doing your own thing, right?

Being Jedi Service Corps facilitates a character of any age.
Jun 15, 2025 11:08 pm
What about a real fresh jedi knight? Like literally this is his first mission after getting the title? Still working in groups maybe as a non commanding officer?
Jun 16, 2025 2:27 am
Is it the age thing, or is it the rank that you don't like?

Cuz the only canon narrative way I feel like it makes sense for a full fledged Jedi to be serving in the role that you will be is if your character has exercised their Right of Denial.

So you'd effectively be here as punishment. With no Lightsaber.

You're gonna be getting bossed around and what not. Not to mention your abilities will probably not reflect those of what we might expect of a Jedi.
Jun 16, 2025 5:11 am
I was just thinking of a concept of a new knight, super fresh. Who was promoted as a technicality more than anything as the war raged and numbers dwindled. He is confident but he finds his skills are more "just stay alive" than offensive prowess.

Maybe his promotion was on the battle field but afterwards it was found he clearly wasn't ready to lead so he was put in a situation where he didn't have to under the jedi master we are all working under.

Not conferred the military rank normally found with knight. I see the internal delimma of him knowing/thinking his rank is a mistake and trying to fill that role while inequiped interesting, could see interesting dark side struggles.

Though if it is a hard no, I can rework my thoughts. I think the concept can work with some flipping. I don't think age is the thing as generally he would still be 'padawan age appropriate ' in this scenario.
Jun 16, 2025 8:54 am
You could go with an older padawan whose master (who could even be Master Barouk) is strongly encouraging them to take the Trials, but they don't feel like they're ready - especially since that means taking a real command in the war.

That could hit the key marks for your concept, with the internal dilemma of "am I right about not being ready? Or does my master see something that I don't," while keeping your character in the position on the totem pole Emsquared sees as working best for the set-up.

It's not a hard no.

Because we're going to be moving toward the post-Jedi Order era the title of Jedi Knight would be largely just fluff.

So, as long as you're okay with your Jedi Knight taking orders (mainly from a Jedi Master, at least) and not necessarily being able to boss around the other players (I want a peers dynamic, no Main Characters) nor to be able to perform mechanically like we as fans and consumers of the canon media might expect a Jedi Knight to perform?

I guess I really don't care if that's all ok with you.

Bottom line - it will just be fluff.
Jun 16, 2025 6:43 pm
I am up for being a peers dynamic with the other players. Maybe I was the "first' of the cohort promoted and we have known each other awhile. My character would maybe be someone who wants to keep the peer dynamic and not be a "boss" of anyone...let alone jedi padawans he has known his whole life.

And I actually think the point is...mechanically he might not be the on-par with a normal Jedi Knight...and he knows it.
Jun 16, 2025 7:33 pm
That could work well with what I was planning for my padawan. I was thinking she'd be a bit reckless, impatient and maybe a little rebellious at least by jedi standards so it would make sense if she wasn't the first among her peers to be allowed to rank up.

What if there is some interplay here? I was thinking of the Morality Caution/Fear. Which feels very much in the opposite of yours? like they each think the other are "better" Jedi in a way (but would never admit it to each other) that you take the risks/do the heroics by nature while I am the more disciplined practical warrior who gets the academic/traditional success (who is going more defensive in combat prowess).

Sort of like the two long time friends who have opposite approaches and compliment each other in a way.

So I think this is where I am landing mechanically

Thanks for all your work putting your characters together gang!

I've reviewed and approved them all.

Tho @Furmyr last I looked you still needed to spend your creds.

I am working on getting the in character story thread up , and will try to have that done in the next couple days.

Just a heads up, I am going on a vacation beginning the 22nd - the 29th (so all next week) and may be largely inactive during that time.
Jun 18, 2025 4:56 pm
Does anyone want to be Master Barouk's Padawan?
Jun 18, 2025 7:01 pm
Also let's everyone roll a Force die here to determine our initial Destiny Pool!
