Welcome to Waterdeep! This is your own "Session zero" thread.

Character generation and other rules are available here.

Don't forget to vote in the posting frequency pool (link), ok?

If you are okay with the concept, Raoul will need a family connection. I would assume one of the other PCs would serve the best (preferably one of the youngest and most vulnerable) but am fine with the kidnapped NPC alternative. If you want me to go with another PC, you can assign one or I will post in the OC thread to see you wants a guardian faerie.

I picked up the Duende idea from the Tiny Intro character page, but the closest I could see in 5e type races is the fairy which would give flight. With that as a potential power, I went with a light melee weapon and non-offensive powers and out of combat minor magic item so that it wouldn't be unbalancing.

Feedback always appreciated.

I like your concept and willingness to play something unusual, so let's handle the "details" together... =)

Character generation in this game is not exactly like Tiny Intro. I took most rules from Tiny Taverns and mixed them with some homebrew traits based on DnD backgrounds and races.

Rules are here

Having said that, we will need 2-4 traits for your character, so we can balance Raoul with the other PCs. You will probably have a custom heritage and background. As such, if it grants you an unusual trait (like invisibility or casting minor spells at will) its usually worth 2 traits.

If you want, you can take a look at DnD playable races, from any of the (many) official rulebooks and/or wikis and we can build something together.

What's the closest you can see to the core of your idea? A pixie? A Fairy?

A Fairy would give you 2 Traits (in total) instead of the regular 4:

- Fairy (Heritage): You look like a small elf with insectile wings. Because of your wings, you can fly. You can’t use this flying speed if you’re wearing medium or heavy armor.

- Whispers of the Wild (Background, special: loses the initial free trait): Those attuned to the spirits of nature possess the subtle ability to influence the world around them in small but meaningful ways. A nature-bound character with this Trait might coax a flower to bloom, urge a leaf to unfurl, or cause a seed pod to open with a mere gesture. They can also predict the weather, light or snuff out a candle, a torch, or a small campfire and even produce harmless sensory phenomena—falling leaves, the rustle of branches, the distant chirp of a bird, or even a faint, earthy scent—all confined to a small area around them.

To use this ability, describe in detail what you are trying to do and perform a standard 2d6 Test. If you are attempting to manipulate an object, you must have direct line of sight. You may also unleash a simple Ranged attack, such as a crackling bolt of lightning. This is treated like any other Ranged attack in Combat, requiring two Actions, one to prepare and one to fire, and a successful 2d6 Test.

Regarding the family connection, the best match for you to play (5 per week posting rate) would be with Briar Locksqur and Lunareth. I will grant you access to their current adventure.

@Smiley, would you like a Fairy guardian? @badbaron, if Smiley accepts, we'll also need to discuss why you're only showing up now... Briar had a rough upbringing. He probably would have needed a little help, years ago! =D

I have no problem with that.

What sort of *Theme* is the Raol going with? (Sorcerer, Rogue, Fighter)
Jun 24, 2025 1:24 am
I'd guess more druidic, use cantrips and the like but from the druid list to avoid having as much overlap, I'm just getting this together today.

Whispers of the Wild: From reading Smiley's notes, you want a list of interesting cantrips and 1st/2nd level spells, only presumably from the Druid list. He had 3/1/2 in terms of level; I went 2/2/2 but with generally less dynamic spells. Here's a first cut based mainly on what would be useful in a kitchen.

Or are we just going with Druidcraft as written (plus the attack part of the cantrip you described)?

Cantrips:
Mending (utility)
Produce Flame (attack cantrip)
(Alternative: Druidcraft)

1st
Create/Destroy Water (utility)
Goodberry (healing)
(Alternative: Purify food and water)

2nd
Lesser Restoration (Neutralize Poison)
Locate Object (utility)
(Alternative: Gust of wind)

Are you picturing Raoul sort of like Dobby the house elf?
Here is my thoughts.

I am a bastard child of Lord Alastair Ravenshade. My mother(deceased) got me away from my *evil* father.
My father had you as a House Fairy and told you to watch & protect me after my mother passed.
I do not know my father sent you. I just assumed we are good friends. I don't treat you like a *slave or servant*. I appreciate everything you do but don't always want you to.

Briar is very much Robin Hood style character. He is good hearted but will do not so ethical things to help others.
Most of his profits he gives to the Harper's to spread where needed.
He has and wants very little.

What is your connection with the Harper's? Are you a member also?

I also can see you vanishing for a few days to speak with my father about what I have been doing. You give me some excuse everytime and I believe you. Would help explain where you have been the last day or so.

I thought of that also, but not when I had the idea of the character. Had not realized your mother was dead . . . or that your father had any sort of paternal desire to help you. Avoiding the Dobby cliche as much as possible; was thinking personality more like Stanley Tucci in Devil Wears Prada.

I haven't seen that movie in a long time.
Explain the reference for me please.

Caustic, little tolerance for foolishness, on the bossy side, but stylish, loyal to his friends, and (possibly the only one in the movie) goes out of his way to help the lead character succeed.

Got it.
Sort of like Zazu from the Lion King.
Am I your *ward*?

What do you picture our relationship being?
Jun 24, 2025 3:54 am
Think a servant but one who raised you from a child. Combination of servitude and bossitude.
Jun 24, 2025 4:03 am
Zazu is pretty close. When did your mother die? I could have been bonded to her and then when she died, I come looking for you.

I never set an exact date.
I was thinking some time in his early teens.
Age 9-11 or so.
After that he kind of just fended for himself on the streets.
Stealing when needed until a Harper caught and trained him.

So not in the last week or so; that doesn't work then.

Sounds good. I will post a first version of your spells tomorrow.
In the meantime, you can propose some backstory and sort it out with Smiley here. =)

You do not have permission to post in this thread.
