Bacon Scrap Sanctuary Recon

Jan 3, 2017 7:08 pm
Having saved the trumpet-playing #5 and escaped the massing hoard of Casualties, the crew continues on their way towards Bacon Scrap Sanctuary. Once in the general vicinity, you find a good spot to camp for the rest of the evening which passes without incident.

At first light, you check your equipment, eat up and prep for whatever may be awaiting you at the Sanctuary.

Bacon's Scrap Sanctuary is a complex that is over 30,000 square feet. The entire Sanctuary is surrounded by an impressive multicolor wall that consists of sheets fashioned from recycled car metal and welded together. The majority of that interior area is the yard which is covered by row upon row of car chassis of every make and model in varying states of rust and upkeep. Many of the chassis have been converted into housing. There is also a large warehouse and a smaller office building on the premises.
OOC:
Here's a link to their website from before the Crash: link
Over the main gate, a large sign identifies the place as Bacon's Foreign Car Parts. That sign along with the main gate and a good portion of the wall around it have been knocked over and appear to have been trampled by hundreds of feet. Mud and dirt have formed a wide and unmistakable path that leads from across the road and into Bacon's Scrap Sanctuary. It has clearly fallen prey to a Casualty stampede. There do not appear to be any Casualties at least in the area surrounding the gate or anyone else for that matter.

Claire kneels down to pet Teddy, "Seems a little too quiet, if you ask me."
Jan 4, 2017 7:59 pm
Agreed. Want me to scout ahead?
Jan 4, 2017 8:04 pm
She adjusts her cap, "If you want to do the initial poke around, I'll keep an eye out."
Jan 4, 2017 8:08 pm
I'll cover you. Ham-Bone positions himself so he has clear field of fire in case Run gets into trouble.
Jan 5, 2017 8:32 pm
Tightening his helmet, bat over his shoulder, Run starts to cautiously follow the dirt path and over the remains of the gate, looking around as he goes.

Loan Shark picks around the debris around the broken wall and finds 3 Bounty. In addition to the Bounty, he notices scorch marks on a section of the wall and a couple of pieces of what looks to be the remains of an improvised explosive device.

Once past the wall, the dirt path begins to fan out and disperse in every direction. The soil's color changes from a uniform brown to a mottled, rusty, red-brown. Your feet squish into the soil as it becomes softer and more moist. Littered all around are the remnants of a massacre -- severed limbs and half-eaten torsos pepper the landscape. The farther in you get, the stronger the sickening smell of rot and death that permeates the area becomes.

About 300 ft from the wall, you can see the smaller office building. The walls are covered in dirty, bloody hand prints and claw marks. The door has been ripped off its hinges and lies on the ground among at least a dozen corpses.

The larger warehouse is farther away and you cannot see it's entrance from your vantage point.

The only sound of note comes from within, or perhaps behind, the office building. It is a human voice speaking loudly, but it is muffled and distant enough that you can't make out any of the words.
OOC:
Anyone entering the area and witnessing all this give me a Self-Control check.

Despite the horrors all around him, Run isn't fazed at all. There's a job to do and who knows what dangers may be around.
Jan 8, 2017 1:39 am

Run's awareness roll failed so there's not much else for him to see in the immediate area with just awareness. If he goes to the office building or warehouse you will definitely lose sight of him.

Once everyone is closer, Run heads to the office building, with caution
Jan 11, 2017 5:24 am
Claire holds tight to the walls, keeping Teddy close to her. "I'll not to have lead boots and stomp around." She was curious what was inside the building, though she feared that a bag of Doritos crunching under her foot would draw attention to her.

As you approach the office building, the muffled sounds get clearer and louder. It is a woman's voice wailing. Whatever it is that she's saying, she is repeating .over and over again. There are quite a few more incomplete sets of human remains near the office building. The pile of Casualties near the door have all been shot in the head.
Jan 13, 2017 9:50 pm
OOC:
Can I tell now if the voice is inside or behind?
Jan 14, 2017 5:56 am
OOC:
Inside, sorry should have said that. You can tell it's coming through the doorway
Jan 14, 2017 9:06 am
Wary that poking his head through the doorway might end up with it getting blown off, Run signals for the others to join him to formulate a plan
Jan 14, 2017 10:11 am
Staring blankly at the carnage, Ham-Bone's attention is drawn by Run's signal. With his rifle at the ready, he joins Run near the building.
OOC:
Besides the door, can I see any other entrance into the building?
Jan 14, 2017 8:22 pm
There are a few windows which have been solidly boarded up. Seeing that this building was originally just the offices for the scrapyard company it's fair to assume that there's at least one other entrance on the back side of the building. You would have to circle the building to check for sure.
Jan 14, 2017 10:32 pm
Claire, not wanting to knock on the front door, slowly slips around to see the backside of the building.
Jan 15, 2017 4:18 pm
Ham-Bone follows Claire to the back of the building, keeping an eye open any movement.

Jan 16, 2017 3:23 am
Claire and Ham Bone turn the corner to see the back of the building and see...a lone Casualty wandering through the field between the office and the warehouse building.

At the back of the building there is a door that is intact. There are also two garage doors on this side of the building. Both of the doors are down.
OOC:
Give me an Awareness roll for Claire too.

As he sees the others tense, Loan just presses himself against the front of the office, assuming the more competent members of the party will be able to handle whatever it is around the corner.
Jan 17, 2017 12:15 pm
OOC:
Yes... more competent. Ignore that 1 I just rolled :)
Jan 17, 2017 4:54 pm
Meanwhile, back at the front, keeping to the side of the front door, Run taps "Shave and a haircut" on it with his bat.
Jan 18, 2017 2:50 am
OOC:
A success is a success no matter how low. :p
Claire and Ham:All three doors appear to be intact, undamaged, and closed securely. Looking across the compound and past the Casualty, Claire can see that a second section of the wall has been destroyed near the warehouse. The gap looks to be about the same size as the one through which you came, the dispersed mud path appears to reform as it leads through the wall and away from the Sanctuary. The zombie is far enough away that you can easily avoid it if you don't engage it.

Shark and Run: You step cautiously past the corpses and get close enough to hear the voice clearly. It is an old woman wailing-- a chilling mix of pain, panic and grief. Noooo!........Jimmy don't gooo!.......I'm sorry! There is a peculiar pause between her sentences and you hear a few slow thuds before she begins again, Noooo!........Jimmy don't gooo!.......I'm sorry!

Run's Shave and a Haircut results in some rustling from within the office, but the woman continues. Through the door way, you can tell that the carnage continues inside
Jan 20, 2017 1:04 pm
Ham-Bone nods toward the closest door so Claire knows what he is up to and then tests to see if it is locked.
Jan 20, 2017 10:59 pm
All three doors are locked.
Jan 22, 2017 6:53 pm
Ham-Bone's misspent youth has come in handy after the Crash. He crouches over the door handle and attempts to pick the lock.

Rolls

Criminality B - (1d10+1)

(10) + 1 = 11

Criminality R - (1d10)

(2) = 2

Jan 23, 2017 4:48 am
Clearly, this lock was only intended to keep out mindless zombies. Ham Bone manages to jimmy it open without much trouble. The door cracks opens slightly revealing a hallway that leads to the front of the building. There are several doors along the left side of the hallway. Steel bars separate the end of the hallway from the reception area at the front of the building. In the hallway are five Casualties, the nearest one is two shambles away, the rest have shuffled toward the bars and Run's Shave and a Haircut.

Rolls

Mob Size - (1d10)

(5) = 5

Mob Distance - (1d10)

(2) = 2

Jan 24, 2017 4:14 am
OOC:
How far away are the Cs that are moving toward the bars. Are they far enough that if Ham-Bone could shoot the Casualty in front of him and still have time to take out the others?
Jan 24, 2017 5:02 am
OOC:
They have collected down at the end of the hall and even the closest one is two turns away. Since you have the silencer, that works in your favor too. You would have enough time assuming the dice don't hate you like they hate Claire :) If you just start taking them down, I'd say you have a total of 6 turns before the far ones would threaten you. Might want to check your ammo though. Now would be a shitty time to need to reload.
Now that the door is open, you can clearly hear the woman's words now too.
Jan 24, 2017 1:25 pm
OOC:
Thanks for reminding me about the ammo. I'll reload now while the C is two shambles away, plug him at one shamble, and then take down the others. What can go wrong?
Jan 24, 2017 5:51 pm
Run remains at the front door, waiting for word from the others and keeping an eye out.
Jan 25, 2017 10:53 pm
WarDomo sent a note to Hamish
OOC:
Reread the Refresh rules, it doesn't take an action or anything to refresh. So you might as well wait until you're out of ammo before you do it. Go ahead and roll for the first shot for Ham Bone.

Everybody give me initiative rolls and self-control roll for encountering the zombie while we're at it.
Jan 26, 2017 3:39 pm
Although not unexpected, Ham-Bone's stomach clenches upon seeing the Cs inside. Lowering his rifle, he takes aim at the nearest of the them.

I am painfully aware of this. Most of my income this round will go towards getting a pistol. I have something I could do but I'm sure as hell never going to do it (run into melee). The last C in the building falls and Claire gets to work trying to brace the door to keep the Vector trapped inside. She uses some nearby scrap and manages to jury rig a pretty respectable door jam. That should hold. Right, Theo? The dog yips happily in acknowledgement. The apologies have subsided and been replaced with a slow, rhythmic pounding on the interior door.

The threat is over for now, but dawdling would not be a great idea. The warehouse has yet to be explored and there's also the field of cars/residential areas of the sanctuary.

Mar 3, 2017 1:17 am
As you approach the warehouse, you can clearly see the bay doors are open and it appears the carnage continues inside. A set of large, deep tire tracks lead away from the warehouse and out the section of demolished wall nearby. The tracks near the wall are obscured by the large path of muddy footprints that lead out of the enclave.
Mar 3, 2017 1:50 am
Looks like they abandoned the sanctuary. Hopefully they did it in a hurry so there's some bounty to be had...

Out in the field you had seen a massacre. Here in the loading bay of the warehouse, you have stumbled upon the remnants of a war zone. A fair number of the corpses here are Casualties, but strewn among them are unturned people in both civilian and tactical gear. Bullet holes pepper the walls and it is clear even from here that there was probably a lot more supplies on the shelves than there used to be.
Mar 5, 2017 2:32 am
Ham-Bone whistles at the scene before him. Carefully, he enters the warehouse. He's looking for anything of value either on the corpses or anything that has been left behind.

OOC:
Reviewed the scavenge roll rules (p. 152).
For future reference, prior to the roll you specify whether you're looking for:

1. Any tool under 3 bounty in upkeep (or a Refresh for any such item) - On a success you find it.
2. Bounty - On a success you get the natural black die value in Bounty
3. An upgrade to a specific piece of gear you own. - On a success you find it.

So let me know which you were looking for. Also, since you are literally rifling through dead bodies that is a potential Detachment threat, give me a Self-Control Roll.

If anyone else want to scavenge, let me know what you're looking for and give me both a scavenge and a detachment roll.

Since our group is short of firepower, I'll search for the automatic upgrade to the rifle.

OOC:
Yeah, seems like that would be something you could find here. And you're good on the self-control roll. Anyone else doing anything?

Run keeps and eye out for movement as the others scavenge.
Mar 12, 2017 10:03 pm
Considering how useless he had been in the fights before, he specs in handgun to the recognition algorithm and sees if he can find a pistol among the reckage.

Rolls

Scavenge BvR wth a +2 from specs - (1d10+4, 1d10)

1d10+4 : (8) + 4 = 12

1d10 : (7) = 7

A lot of ammo was expended, but Loan Shark manages to find a hand gun and enough ammo for a full clip. Claire also sifts through to see if anyone is carrying some Bounty.

Jackpo... Ugh! Claire pulls a hand full of ID's from the pocket of one of the downed corpses in tactical outfits, but also snags a bit of the woman's small intestine. She turns quickly from the group and walks outside to grab a little air. Theo follows her happily.
OOC:
Claire gains 9 Bounty. give me a self-control roll for Loan Shark.
As they rummage through the bodies, Run is pleasantly surprised to not detect any movement in the area. The light does not reach far into the warehouse, so he can really only be sure that the loading bay is clear.

Rolls

Scavenge (B,R) - (1d10+3, 1d10)

1d10+3 : (9) + 3 = 12

1d10 : (1) = 1

Self-Control (B,R) - (1d10+3, 1d10)

1d10+3 : (1) + 3 = 4

1d10 : (7) = 7

OOC:
*cough, cough* What are we doing, folks?

OOC:
Whoops missed a roll!
Run coldly clears some suspicious fleshy material out of the weapon. Well I might be useful in a fight now, heh. Looks like they've bugged out. I guess our contract with PB requires us to either figure out what happened here or track them down...

Ham-Bone looks around and scratches his head. What a mess. We're gettin paid to find that shipment, so I say we follow those tracks and see where they lead.

A second set of similar explosive devices were used to demolish a section of the wall near the warehouse. The mass of tracks coalesce near the wall and lead away from Bacon's Scrap Sanctuary. The trail continues for at least the next mile that you can see from where you stand.

Balancing his rifle over his shoulder, Ham begins to follow the tracks. Coming? he calls behind to the others.

Run finishes up his leg stretches once the others are done sifting through the rot. Hefting his bat over his shoulder, he heads after Ham
