Chapter 1.1: Willowdark (Xaar, Thorolf, Jean)

Your adventures will go here!
Jan 9, 2017 11:02 pm
Xaar practically rolls her eyes as she heads out the front door and towards the mountains. "I'm not sneaky, so if you're looking to go quick and quiet, that's not me. Hope you've all packed for the journey."

"Hopefully I can stay quiet enough that they won't notice us. Just try to stay as stealthy as possible."
Jan 10, 2017 2:02 am
"I can sneak around well enough, but I'd need a chance to get out of my armor first."
Jan 10, 2017 2:13 am
"That is why I travel with no armor. My battleaxe will protect me well enough. Come. This way." She loudly sniffs the air to determine which direction to move.
OOC:
Making some rolls. Not sure which applies.

Rolls

Survival - (1d20+4)

(19) + 4 = 23

Perception - (1d20+4)

(14) + 4 = 18

Jan 10, 2017 2:20 am
OOC:
Survival would be the better one to identify a way to head.
As Xaar sniffs the air, a cacophony of scents assault her trained nose. The damp rot of vegetation at the edge of the lake to the north. Sweat and spices flutter from the various homes. Fresh dirt and unwashed masses from the west. The slightly sweet smell of wildflowers and grasses drifting from the east.
Jan 10, 2017 2:24 pm
"To the east. That is where we will begin." She follows the scent towards the sweet grasses.

Rapidly the town fades away as you move east. The grass goes from barely above the sole of your shoe to very quickly brushing up to your knees. Small flowers dot the landscape and you can see the swirling stars above you, not a cloud in the sky. The moon is nearly gone, the barest sliver in the sky. Far off in the distance, you can see the black mass of the mountains rising into the sky. Their tops are rounded and smooth.
Jan 10, 2017 6:34 pm
"Beautiful isn't it?" She stares at the stars in the sky for a moment before continuing towards the mountains, keeping an eye out for any predators in the vicinity.

Perception - (1d20+4)

(6) + 4 = 10

Jan 10, 2017 6:55 pm
You don't hear much of anything abnormal, at the moment. The rustle of grasses in the light breeze, and crickets.
Jan 10, 2017 9:08 pm
"It's quiet. Seems pretty safe out here." She does not bother to hide her disappointment.

"I doubt any of Notter's men would be waiting for us out here. Just makes our job easier, really." Jean seems uneasy despite his words.
Jan 10, 2017 10:12 pm
"Should we check on the camp?"
Jan 11, 2017 1:49 am
As you all walk, you do hear the faint sound of a scream coming from the direction of the village. You can't be sure if it's a scream of horror, terror, anguish, or cheer. You can barely register it as a scream.
Jan 11, 2017 3:25 am
"Notter's men? Or a drunk fool?" Xaar listens more intently, but there's no telling whether the sound is worth investigating.
Jan 11, 2017 3:42 am
"Whatever it is, I'm sure the B team can handle it if it's a problem for us."
Jan 11, 2017 4:45 pm
"I say we either circle around and check the perimeter of the town or double back and check on the tent camp. If we're to find allies, it will be there."

"I say we try to find anyone who can help us out, that should be a higher priority and finding camp shouldn't be too much of a problem anyway."
Jan 11, 2017 9:53 pm
As you all continue your movements, skirting back towards the town, keeping to the extremities of the land, you move through some areas of brush, careful to mask the sounds. Xaar, you hear the faint sounds of steps off to one side. Peering through the night, you see two squat kneeling figures in the brush, about 30 feet away. Arrows whistle through the night.

Xaar, you feel nothing at all by you, but see an arrow bury itself into Jean's thigh and Thorolf's shoulder.

Jean, you got drilled with an arrow, right in the meaty part of your leg. Take 7 damage.
Thorolf, an arrow is now lodged in your shoulder. Take 7 damage.

COMBAT! You were all surprised by the attackers, but you win advantage. You're up!

"Cowards! How dare you ambush us you fools!" I charge towards the kneeling figures, battle axe raised menacingly, as I attempt to knock them to the ground.

Xaar rushes in, decrying the bravery of their assailants, one of them topples as she plows into the stout dwarven frame. At the moment, they do not appear to be frightened.
Jan 11, 2017 10:31 pm
Jean's rapier slides in between the non-toppled dwarf's side, causing a welt of blood to begin running down the sword.
OOC:
They switched it up in 5e. Non-lethal isn't a "thing" as much anymore unless it would be a killing blow. Then you can just choose to render them unconscious but stabilized.
Jan 12, 2017 2:11 am
Thorolf will take a shot with his elvish bow Pelgilgalad.

Rolls

Attack - (1d20+4)

(11) + 4 = 15

Damage - (1d8+2)

Jan 12, 2017 2:29 am
Thorolf's arrow sails through the air, burying itself in they eye of the same dwarf Jean stabbed. A cry pierces the night as he crumples to the ground, body twitching uncontrollably.

The toppled dwarf rises from the ground, drawing his sword as he goes. He takes a pair of swings at Xaar.

Thorolf's arrow thuds into the dwarf's shoulder spinning him just out of Xaar's reach.

You vile Tellurians will all taste the bite of Markindale steel! he seethes through his teeth.
Jan 12, 2017 3:14 am
OOC:
What would I roll to disarm him?
Jan 12, 2017 3:16 am
OOC:
Use an attack to make attack roll opposed by target's Athletics or Acrobatics check. Target has advantage if holding the item with 2 or more hands.
Jan 12, 2017 3:40 am
"Not today." Jean attempts to wrench the blade out of the dwarf's hand.

As the dwarf is going off about a war being on, you catch a faint echo of sound on the breeze.

Fine, you want it that way, I'll answer you. Thug. My captain sent me. There was only two of us right here, Rolf and me. The company has 400 people. Dunno where they are right now. Somewhere else, clearly. he says, clearly shaken.
Jan 12, 2017 6:24 pm
Xaar turn towards her fellow crew members. "We'll have to warn the others that more attacks like this may come. Search them both. We can tie this one up and drag him back to town, unless you have better ideas?"
Jan 12, 2017 6:32 pm
"It might work, but we have no guarantee that there's no one in town who would call the rest of the army down on us. We're trying to keep a low profile, remember?"
Jan 12, 2017 6:42 pm
OOC:
Time-check wise. You guys are about 20 minutes out from your departure from Genevieve/Frederick's home. The other thread is at about 45 minutes past. Just keeping you all aware of where you are in time relevance to one another (so if you are trying to respond to voices in the wind or something of that nature, I can keep things flowing properly).

Xaar's axe bites deep into the dwarf's chest, sending a fresh gout of blood into the night air.

Gah! What in the Light are you doing, woman!? He cries out, fingers plucking at the wound. He stays on his feet.
Jan 17, 2017 1:21 am
Jean jumps back in surprise. "Whoa, wait, what? We didn't say we were killing him!"
Jan 17, 2017 1:24 am
"No. Don't kill him. Leave him be."
Jan 17, 2017 1:51 am
I shrug. "You said leave 'em. Didn't say leave 'em alive"
Jan 17, 2017 2:26 am
The dwarf looks at all of you and turns to run away as you bicker.
OOC:
Waiting on you guys to wrap up here and decide if you are responding to the elvish cry on the wind or what your plan is. Once I know where you guys are, we can resolve what the other half is doing.
Jan 17, 2017 3:09 am
Xaar lets him run off like the wounded animal he is. "Seems the other group has headed to the jailhouse. Perhaps they found a prisoner worth interrogating?" She starts going through the dead dwarf's pockets checking for anything of note.

"They didn't get far. Looks like they're scouting." I hand the map over to anyone else who's interested in it.
Jan 18, 2017 3:29 am
Jean takes the map and looks at it. "That… doesn't bode well."
Jan 18, 2017 3:38 pm
"No, it doesn't. You guys have a plan for what we should do?"
Jan 18, 2017 3:56 pm
"We'll have to tell the others. This could change our plans. For all we know they're readying for a raid on the village."
Jan 19, 2017 6:01 am
Going to fast forward you guys just a tiny bit since it looks like you were readying to head back to town.

As you make your way toward the town, you take a circuitous route, looking for more scouts as you go. It slows your progress somewhat. Right around two hours after you initially left Genevieve's place, you find yourselves quietly approaching the jailhouse under the cover of shadows. As you get near, you notice a significant lack of guard presence, both at the barracks as well as at the jailhouse door.

As you make your way into the jailhouse, you see the Sheriff sitting at the duty desk, looking pensively at his steepled fingers.

Oh, hello you three. Come in, quickly. I assume you are all working together with your - ahem - cousins? Family business perhaps. Just a bowshot in the Dark you see. He turns to look at Jean. You've the mark of a soldier about you. I'm a bit light in the way of guards after a fracas near the tavern tonight. I'm officially deputizing you for the night. No need to draw a uniform or anything of that nature. Your duty for the evening is to stand this watchpost. We have three very criminal persons in the back. Your responsibility and authority only last while you are physically in this jailhouse. When you step out, that all fades from you. Please check on your charges before you settle in out here. You other two, you may wait with your friend if you choose. the Sheriff says, a small smirk forming on his lips. Without waiting for a response or acknowledgement, he leaves the jailhouse, a ring of keys sitting on their hook behind the desk.
