The Adventure: Chapter 3

Len

You guide your barge to through the canals of the city. Along the way, you get the sense the city is on high alert. The Hundred Swords are out in force, dressed in black studded leather. You see multiple occasions of people being detained and strong armed.

Eventually you find the Barge Wright Inn. After securing your humble vessel, you hoist yourselves onto the walkway and feel immediately relieved to be standing on solid ground again.

From the outside you the inn you hear none of the laughter and boastful cheer you expect to hear from an inn's common room. As you walk inside, your nostrils are filled with the familiar scent of stale alcohol and pipe smoke, but the dozen patrons in the establishment seem quiet and despondent. There are tables, mostly in decent condition. Some are half-broken and repaired, likely the result of some previous violence in the tavern. In the center of the room there is a brawling circle 25 feet in diameter, not currently in use.

A tall, white-haired Dwarven woman named Brunwin with an old face and young eyes tends the bar, and by the way she speaks to the other servers it is clear she is in charge. Guildleader Prust makes arrangements arrangements for rooms for the night.

What would you like to do?

Len

Jan 21, 2017 7:19 pm
Scanning over the patrons, you see:

A table for four halflings playing a game of cards with serious looks on their faces.

A table of three young female humans with long flowing ornate robes who are reading books together and taking notes in journal.

A goliath in armor is boasting to a group of four human men, who look like they've heard the story many times before but are happy to hear it again.
Jan 21, 2017 10:54 pm
Aldrik walks up and listens to the goliath.
Jan 21, 2017 11:00 pm
Thorin walks up to the innkeep and asks, "Can I get a room for the night? As well as some food and a bath please?"

Len

Jan 21, 2017 11:53 pm
Aldrik catches the end of the Goliath's story, his voice deep and loud:

"... but I calmed myself. I was the eye of the storm. He was punching and kicking me as if he thought I was a helpless dog, hoping to roll me out of the ring. I reached through the darkness and caught his arm. I didn't need my eyes after that. Five blows to his snake head and his mind powers faltered. My vision returned and I added a sixth blow finished him. His Yuan Ti friends didn't like that much, but I've never had patience for cheaters and I've never had patience for snake men. And that was the closest I came to losing my title here."

Len

Jan 21, 2017 11:58 pm
"Yer big friend took care of the rooms already, but we'll get you a meal and get a bath going for you," Brunwin explains to Thorin.

In a few minutes a young dwarven lass brings a big wooden bowl of stew of oats and root vegetables and beef to your table, along with a full tankard of ale.

"Bath will be ready in 10 minutes, just out back." She gestures to past the bar where a door leads to a courtyard of some kind.
Jan 23, 2017 6:20 am
Finns eyes Gleam as he notices the card players. He walks to the cloest place where he can have a bit of privacy to disguise himself. After doing so he Walks over and he introduces himself Hello I am Mofig May I join in? Finn places a sack of "coins on the table (A sack of Sand with a few coins to make a noise)

The halflings look up from their game, just finishing a round of Three Dragon Ante. They are well-dressed and carry rapiers at their hips, clearly young nobles or successful merchants with intentions of climbing the social ladder.

One of them puts down their pipe and addresses you in a high-pitched voice. "Yes, interesting. Yes. Do sit, stranger. Do." He smiles a jolly grin. "Three Dragon Ante, I assume you know the rules. We got a special rule for newcomers though ... have to tell us a secret before you draw your first card, you do. Yes, a secret."

The four halflings look up at you expectantly.

"Oh you don't say! Word on the street says those Thousand Sword fellers are all in a bunch about some troublemakers from Kaled Del. Turning the whole city over ... "

She trails off and suddenly looks at you in a different light. Then, she seems to think better of it.

"Oh haha!" She turns red in the face. "Fer a second I thought it might be you and your friends! But they're looking for six Dwarves not five. But best be careful, those mercenaries are without honor or mercy. You wouldn't want to end up in an interrogation cell for a case of mistaken identity"
Jan 23, 2017 8:04 pm
"Aye. I'd certainly hope it's not us." Thorin soon heads off to the bath. After about ten minutes he comes back, joining Finn and saying, "Hello. My name is Thorin, and I would be interested in joining your game if it isn't too late."

Len

Jan 23, 2017 9:48 pm
"No, not too late, friend Thorin! No, no, not too late. I was just explaining to Mofig here our rules for new players. Before you join, you have to tell us a secret. Your secret mind you, your secret. Pardon if I didn't make myself clear."
Jan 23, 2017 10:00 pm
"Well, I am married to a nobleman."

OOC:
A little Retcon here...
As you speak your secrets, the Halfling reveals a ring on his hairy fingers. It begins to glow, going through various shades of reds and oranges and finally purples. He considers the patterns.

"Well, friends Finn and Thorin, thank you for trusting us with these secrets of yours. Now we will return this trust and invite you to play a fair and honest game, yes? "
OOC:
To resolve this game, you first decide if you want to cheat. A cheater rolls as many Sleight of Hand (dex) checks as they want vs. everyone's passive perception. For each success, you gain a reroll for the next phase. Any failure will and you will be exposed as a cheater to whoever's passive perception you did not beat. Finn, you can have Drake aid you and get advantage on the Sleight of Hand (dex) checks.

Second, you pay 1gp to the pot per card you will draw, represented by a d6. Then you roll those d6s. If you roll any 1s, you lose. The winner is the person with the highest total. If everyone rolls 1s, the pot carries over to the next round. If there is a tie, you will roll d6s (draw cards) until somebody wins.

If you successfully cheated, you can make those rerolls and take whichever result you want.

The four halflings gasp in unison as you fumble a third attempt to rig your card draw, although you do fool Thorin.

The halflings are upset and argue about how to punish you for this, but Benoit calms them down.

"Now, now, everyone. I am sure Finn made an honest mistake, an honest mistake. But bridging our trust, Master Finn, bridging our trust you understand, is important."

He polishes his ring on his sleeve.

"Another secret, to bridge our trust, Master Finn. Tell us, besides Master Thorin here, who do you travel with? A bit of detail, if you please."

Len

Jan 25, 2017 6:07 am
While waiting for Finn's response, the other players reveal their cards.

"Master Thorin, you are the winner, congratulations! An honorable and honest victory, to be sure, to be sure. Here, you can have your troubled friend's ante as well"

Wait you knew I was cheating the whole time? Then why let me join again, unless you all were cheating as well?

Len

Jan 25, 2017 6:07 pm
"We believe everyone deserves a second chance," Benoit responds innocently.
Jan 25, 2017 6:50 pm
What happens if they break that trust again?

Len

Jan 25, 2017 6:54 pm
"By asking what happens if you cheat again, you are tipping your hand that you clearly intend to cheat again. Is this not so, dubious Master Finn."
Jan 25, 2017 6:58 pm
Well lets test that ring of yours. Finn looks carefully at the ring to see if he can notice the color changes My next secret is I can't help but try to cheat people out of money especially when they seem to be of a higher status then I.

Len

Jan 25, 2017 7:34 pm
The ring swirls through a kaleidoscope of colors before settling on purple.

"A strange compunction afflicts you, dubious Master Finn. But that is not the question I wanted answered. Not it is not, no it is not! Is our game at an end then, dubious Master Finn?"

Len

Jan 25, 2017 7:34 pm
The Halflings politely bid Thorin good-night.
Jan 25, 2017 8:06 pm

Len

Jan 25, 2017 10:05 pm
"Yes, thank you, you mentioned that already, that you did. Enjoy your winnings good Master Thorin. Good-night, good-night."
OOC:
It is getting late and everyone in the common room has packed up and left other than yourselves and Brunwin who is dimming the lanterns in a not-so-subtle hint she wants to go to bed. Is there anything else you'd like to do before retiring for the evening? Also, before you decide to sleep, let me know if you want to set some sleeping arrangements: setting watches, casting spells, where everyone is sleeping, etc. The basic assumption I am making is no watches, no spells cast, everyone sleeps by themselves in their own room unless you tell me otherwise.

Also, gamblers, don't forget to adjust your gold scores for your winnings / losses.

Meanwhile, at the Moneylender's Guildhall...

The four halflings climbed the steps to the imposing stone structure of the Moneylender's Guildhall. Within a few minutes, they gain an audience with the Sixth Chancellor of the Clockwork Council.

"Yes, we understand you've been looking for some Dwarves today, yes we do! Look no further, for we just came from their company. We would like to discuss the sale of this information to the Clockwork Council, yes we would."

And at that, Benoit reveals his purple magic ring, and the council chambers fills with the sound of Finn's and Thorin's voices ...

"Hello. My name is Thorin, and I would be interested in joining your game if it isn't too late ... I am married to a Nobleman ..."

"... I am know for swindling fools. My name is Finn, this bag only has 2 coins in it. I could go on would you like me to continue?"

The Sixth Chancellor listened intently.

"There were three others with them, yes there was." Benoit adds. "So, do we have a deal?"

The Sixth Chancellor nods.

Three skiffs pulled up to the Barge Wright Inn in the middle of night. Fifteen men and women dressed in black disembarked onto the pier. They gathered around.

"Remember, the Chancellor is paying each of us 10gp if for dead, twice that alive. Look sharp; they're supposed to be some heroes or some shit."

"You think they trapped the place?"

"These fucking adventurer types, you never know what they're going to come up with. Go carefully."

They split into five flights of three. Each flight loaded two-man battering rams off the ship, and the third in each flight loaded light crossbows.

The mercenaries made their way into the Barge Wright Inn, silently breaking the lock on the front door. They made their way through the shadows of the quiet inn, located the logbook and noted the room numbers. Then, they carefully creaked their way up the staircase to the rooms above.

"There are a lot of armed men coming up the stairs! What did you do this time, Finn?!"

Ironfist I did bad. Get ready for fight. Mob coming up for us. Alert others if you can. Sending Drake to warn Prust. Drake go find Prust Now and warn him Hurry. Finn then immediately casts False Life and Armor of Agathys after which he grabs his Dagger and Handaxe and waits for someone to bust down the door at which point he is prepared to cast Hex. Details on this fight:

Dwalia and Thorin will still be asleep when the battle begins, and will be treated as 'surprised' for the first round of combat (cannot take actions). Torden is going to reappear in a random room Prust's room and because he did so well on a constitution saving throw, he will be able to act right out of the gates on the first turn.

Rooms:

Each room has a bed, writing desk, and chair as furnishings, and a framed painting or tapestry hanging on a particularly bare wall. There is a iron-barred window that will be very difficult to go in or out of. There is also a closet space that is mostly empty.

The doors and walls are flimsy: AC 10 and 10 hp. Given that the battering rams do 2d6 damage, you don't have much time.

Enemies

Each flight consists of two men on the battering ram (with short swords at their hips) and a crossbowman behind them. The crossbowmen have readied an attack action before the first round.

Each door has a flight assigned to it. Their silly names match the room's occupant's name that they are outside of (Thorin vs. Tango, Aldrik vs. Alpha), hopefully that helps you keep it straight who you're fighting at first! Each flight will have a single initiative for all the members.

If you don't specify who you're attacking in the flight, I'll just stack the damage to maximize kills, so feel free to just say "I'll swing at the flight in front of me."

Are You Wearing Armour Right Now?

You decide.

Snowy, temporary hit points do not stack. From the Phb p. 198:

"Healing can't restore temporary hit points, and they can't be added together. If you have temporary hit points and receive more of them, you decide whether to keep the ones you have or to gain the new ones. For example, if a spell grants you 12 temporary hit points when you already have 10, you can have 12 or 10, not 22."

I assume you're keeping the 10 from Armor of Agathys.

Delta Flight:

The two mercs see the Dwalia in her bed.

"That's right, back to sleep little girl!" They snicker, raise their weapons and go for a knockout blow. Dwalia slumps down in her bed, blood trickling down her forehead.

Their leader turns at blast of thunder that came from the hallway. Running to the door he pokes his head out to see Torden angrily pushing through dead Hundred Swords.

"CLERIC!" He yells out at the top of his lungs, signalling the others to prioritize this target. He tosses his crossbow, draws steel and advances on the cleric. The Hundred Swords had trained with how to deal with magic users, and now it was time to put that training to the test.

The two mercs on the ram drop it and move into close quarters with Finn. The first goes high and misses, but the second connects ... only to have a horrible tendril of ice shoot up his arm. He screams in agony, falling back a step but still standing.

The crossbowman doesn't see any of this. He is already responding to the call against an enemy cleric. And yet to surrender would mean failure for the mission, which could push tensions in Kaled Del to the breaking point. How many lives might be lost then? He makes his decision: he casts his final spell, blasting all three mercs surrounding him with thunderous force. Then he charges recklessly into Dwalia's room, dragging Prust behind him. After delivering mortal blows to Dwalia, the two mercenaries turn on the pink fury that assails them, taking advantage of the opening Prust's desperate lunge left them. Their blades both find their targets, but in Prust's fury he barely notices them.

The Delta Flight crossbowman has just survived a thunderwave only to be shattered. Having witnessed the death of his crew and being close to death himself, he tosses his weapon to the side and raises his arms weakly in the air to indicate surrender.

At this point, all of the remaining Hundred Swords mercenaries will start surrendering. The task at hand is how to deal with Dwalia's death and how to proceed with the mission.

Here is a reminder of the places in Issica:

Issica

Other than the caravan stockade at the northern edge of the city, there are few roads in Issica. Most of the city is a network of canals, and it is hard do find a Issican who does not own a boat or at least a raft. Foot traffic is facilitated with a spiderweb of walkways and bridges. At night, the Lamplighter guild illuminates the canals with a network of Elvish beacons, and the city is bustling at all hours.

The population of the city is mostly human, but races from all over the Nine Moons can be found here. Dwarves make up a visible minority. They are mostly Stonelost Dwarves that found it easier to find work in Issica, but there are also dangerous exiles and fugitives that sometimes give Dwarves a bad name here.

Issica is also relatively lawless. The Moneylender Guild functions as the closest thing to an organized government, and it only concerns itself with making sure Issica remains a lucrative place to do business. Although the Moneylenders employ a mercenary company to patrol the city (the Hundred Swords), they are corrupt and anyone can buy their way out of trouble with enough gold. Peace is mostly kept in Issica because nations do not want to impede the flow of gold from this city and harshly police their own.

Guildleader Prust does the talking as you pass through security at the east rivergate. From there you are free to travel into the city as you wish. Some places of note to investigate:

The Barge Wright Inn is a comfortable, well-known inn that is owned by Dwarves loyal to Kaled Del. It is your meeting place for reuniting with Torden and a good place to talk to locals.

The Loremaster Guild religiously tracks the major events of the city going back many centuries. It is well known that their official publication of events is heavily censored by the Moneylenders, but they might have records that closer resemble the actual events that transpired.

The Temple of All Faiths advertises itself as a place of serenity and peace amidst all the coin and corruption. Worshipers from all faiths are welcome and they provide spellcasting and other religious services (for a steep fee).

The Warehouse District is the center of organized crime. It is rumoured you can buy the more rare and exotic things in the world there for the right price, no questions asked.

The Bazaar is open every day from dusk till dawn. Stock up on any items you want; prices are twice what are listed in the PHB.

The Constabulary is where you can contact the Hundred Swords.

its unfornutete that Dwalia was not able to make it. And i had hoped it wouldn't come to this but perhaps we can go to The Temple of All Faiths and seeks for someone with enough magical ability who may breath life back to Dwalia. If that fails perhaps the warehouse district. I hope we have enough money or can possible work a debt with the money lenders. I hope we won't.

"Can you cuff some of the ones who are down right now? And wouldn't that technically be necromancy?"

Len

Feb 2, 2017 4:30 am
"Necromancy? " calls out Prust.

"Sure, there's a time to leave a dwarf in his grave when he's earned his spot in Mount Celestia at Moradin's side, but this was hardly a death to be proud of. Murdered as a hostage, failing a sacred duty? She will not want to meet the maker with that ink dry on her sheet."

Prust pulls a pair of manacles from the pack of one of the Mercs.

"Guess they were planning in taking us alive."

He smashes the manacles into the back of the head of one of the Mercs who murdered Dwalia, knocking him out.

"You should have stuck to the plan," Prust says to the sleeping mercenary.

If I remember correctly bring someone back is very time sensitive. We will need to hurry. I say we should split up and follow the lead I have given firstly the Temple to see if they have someone who can preform such a ritual and what materials they require. Hopefully its just money. And one or two of us should get to know our attackers a but more. Finn goes and puts two pair of manacles on two of the people alive. Before going about searching the bodies with Drake for anything of value or useful to our cause. I suggest I stay and get to know them a bit better. I have ways to get info very easily from people.

Captive Hundred Swords mercenaries: 8 conscious, 3 unconscious, 4 dead

Searching their gear, you find:

15 suits of black leather armor, mostly blood-splattered. Not fitted for Dwarves very well,
5 battering rams (treat as Maul),
10 Manacles (including the 2 Prust found),
10 coils of hempen rope (50 ft),
15 Short swords,
5 Light Crossbows,
30 Bolts,
as well as an assortment of waterskins, backpacks, crossbow bolt cases.

One of the crossbowman, likely the leader, has a scrap of paper with the address of the Barge Wright Inn as well as basic information and description of the Seekers and Watchers. There is even information on Torden who the Halflings new nothing about.

Aldrik, you recall the following information about Resurrection:

Resurrection is a high-level Necromancy spell that only very powerful clerics can cast. It has a casting time of 1 hour, and needs a diamond worth at least 1,000 GP, which the spell consumes.

The spell can resurrect a dead creature that has been dead for no more than a century, that didn’t die of old age, and that isn’t undead. If its soul is free and willing and Moradin is willing, the target returns to life with all its hit points. This spell closes all mortal wounds and restores any missing body parts.

Coming back from the dead is an ordeal. The target takes a -4 penalty to all attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks. Every time the target finishes a long rest, the penalty is reduced by 1 until it disappears.

It would be interesting to wonder under what circumstances Aldrik learned this information!

As the mercs down the hall begin to surrender Torden descends like a hurricane on the men who have just murdered Dwalia. He hammers them aside with Stormbreaker before kneeling beside the fallen dwarf and attempting to stem the flow of blood. But he knows all too well that she is beyond saving. Torden whirls to stand over the mercenaries, his head wreathed in lightning, and it takes all his willpower to keep from visiting wrathful retribution upon them. Torden turns back to Dwalia instead and closes her eyes before joining the others as they discuss next steps. HE makes sure to speak only in dwarven, as well as stay out of earshot of the captives.

"It is we that have failed a sacred duty, Guildleader Prust. We failed to protect one of our own."

Torden nods in agreement with Finn. "Yes, some of you stay and question these sellswords. But it would be unwise to tarry here longer than necessary. Make no mistake, more swords will be sent to finish the job these ones failed to do. Who will help me take Dwalia to the Temple? It will be costly but perhaps it is not too late for her. But we must hurry!"

Casting Guidance on Finn. Within the next minute Finn adds 1d4 to skill check of his choice.
Torden utters a quick prayer over Finn and then turns away. He expects that the warlock will employ unsavory methods in his interrogation and he doesn't want to be around for that. Besides, there's much to be done and very little time. First, he prepares Dwalia's body for transport by wrapping her in the bedsheets. As he does this he confers with Prust and whoever else is there to listen.

"The Temple is just down the road but the direct route is most certainly being watched. We should take to the water and take a roundabout route. Now might be a good time to reach out to some people I know and can trust. First, the innkeep. I must send word to Ben, the boatman knows the waterways well and might be able to provide a place to hide."

"What does Finn intend for the captive mercenaries when he's done questioning them? Perhaps we can use their uniforms as disguises as we move about. Or perhaps they can be bought, turning liabilities into assets?"

The beat-up leader of Alpha Flight turns out to be the squad leader. He identifies himself voluntarily.

"We were sent here to apprehend five Dwarves, if possible. We were told they - you - were dangerous religious insurgents from Kaled Del who are out to disrupt mining operations. We were to lock you up, load you onto the boats, and bring you to a nondescript warehouse on the east side. They'll be expecting us soon."

He takes a moment to spit blood onto the floor.

"Our orders came directly from the Sixth Chancellor of the Clockwork Council, and came with a promise of a pouch of gold. Usually that means the other Chancellors are unaware of the operation."

You hear Brunwin coming up the stairs. She has an old, rusty pick-axe in her hands, peeking around the corner.

"You're hurt! Oh my goodness, are those Hundred Swords men?" she says to the Seekers.

Some property damage too, I'm afraid. Don't worry, Kaled Del will compensate you, I'm sure. Now we're going to need your help getting out of here..." Brunwin is clearly unsettled, but her loyalty to Kaled Del is unshakable.

"By Berronar's embrace, what dark times we live in! But don't worry, son of Kaled Del, I'll get your message to these stout folk myself." The fear is still in her eyes, but she seems to be dealing better now that she has a task to focus on.

She returns from the back room clad in fur and travelling boots, and carrying a rucksack with the Stoneshield royal coat of arms emblazoned on the side.

"It's been awhile since an agent of the Throne needed one of these. Should be of use to you and your team."

She gently hands the bag to Torden. Inside are two healing potions, a potion of invisibility, 200 hundred gold coins, a climbing kit, and a +1 Dagger of Throwing*. Then she moves to the door to leave. Before she exits, she turns back to you.

"I'm sure the whole neighborhood heard the thunderbolts you folks were tossing up there. My legs aren't long, and it won't be long before the Hundred Swords come to see what happened to their men. Would be a shame if I returned with your contacts and they already caught up to you. Where should I have them meet you?"

You embark on a silent cruise through the poorly lit back waterways of Issica, which consist of surface level sewer channels and freight ways. Half way into your journey, you can hear the town guard coming alive as dogs bark and voices shout angry orders into the night. No doubt, the trouble at the inn has been discovered.

The five of you manage to stay unnoticed, periodically docking the inn's skiff as patrols march by. You make your way to the Temple of All Faiths, a large stone building of many strange angles and gilded minarets reaching to the sky. You guide the skiff into the temple's dark, icy drainage channel, where the runoff from the holy fountains mingles with the drain water from the lavatories.

The channel takes you right up to the back side of the temple, where the channel is blocked by a heavy metal grate with a big padlock securing it. In front is another skiff with two shadowy figures on deck. As you get closer, your dark vision kicks in, and Torden recognizes them as Tanlius and Ben.

Tanlius hails you: "In the middle of the night on my only day off this week? Just your style, Torden Stormhammer. Well, what kind of mess did you make this time? And who are your friends?"

Ben raises a silent hand in salutations, mute as a stone.

"The Moneylenders kind, I'm afraid. Sixth Chancellor sent a dozen of your friends to capture or kill us. These are my friends from Kaled Del. We need to petition the priests to raise our friend from the dead, and then we'll need both your help getting out of the city and onto the mountain pass. Ben, I wouldn't ask this of you if we weren't desperate. I don’t want to put your family in danger. If you refuse, we will hold no grudge. As for you, Tanlius, you owe me." Torden chuckles at the last. He motions to Prust to help him lift Dwalia.

It would make sense that Torden would know the temple in more detail than the other Seekers, but we'll keep it dialed down low so that other players feel like they can contribute on an equal footing.

Ways into the Temple:

The main entrance will be locked for the night and guarded.

There is a stair that leads to a rear entrance, built so that temple groundskeepers can come down to the outflow channel to break off ice build-up. That door is flanked by statues of Kirin, guardian spirits with lion-like features. Tanlius informs you that the door will lead to the servant quarters, most of whom will be sleeping at this hour.

Tanlius tells you that the drainage gate is often left unguarded on nights when the High Priest wishes to have discreet encounters. Consorts are ferried in through this gate, and he has heard rumours of a secret passage that leads directly to his bedchambers.

There are also high-perched windows made of coloured glass that can be accessed by climbing up the oddly-shaped angular walls of the temple.
