The party is getting close to the island and the people they are to help, but already they see smoke rising from it. Are they too late? Only if they had moved quicker! The ship continues to move closer and there is a glimmer in the far off distance. A wave of something is coming at you, orders are barked and everyone braces themselves for impact as the wave engulfs the ship tossing it around before darkness.... some of you dream, some reflect, but for the majority, nothing but a second passes.

The air is cold and you feel chilled to the bones. The ship is frosty, but drips like it is thawing. A breeze comes from the south and has some warmth to it. Looking towards the island, a large sheet of ice covers everything. The ice starts cracking around the ship, if you wait a little longer, you hould be able to sail south to mainland, or go on foot to the island. Draggor the ships captain is at the helm and looks quite confused. Smoke already billows from his pipe.

Off the side of the ship you see boots sticking out from the ice, anyone would recognize those boots. That was Dirk Clawhammer, the leader of your quickly assembled crew. Everyone here however has fought by his side at least once and he has save all your hides multiple times over. Those indeed are his boots of water walking, too bad he landed head first. The ice around him has begun to get cracks in it.

Baern shakes himself like an animal, then gets to his feet from where the wave had left him. He picks his warhammer up off the deck, straps it to his back, and looks around. Without a word, he leaps over the side of the ship and goes at the ice around Dirk's boots with great vigor.
Attack on the ice, if needed.

"Baern! You crazy sonuva - dwarf overboard!" Gunnar yells. He grabs the nearest mooring line, makes sure the rope is tied fast to the ship, and tosses the end down to Baern.

What the hell just happened? Where'd all this damn ice come from? Gunnar wonders. He shakes his head and focuses on the rescue down on the ice.

"Less time talkin', lad," grunts Ulfren, taking a second mooring line and stepping over the rail to join Baern on the cracking ice below. The barbarian's battleaxe is hefted in the other hand, and he makes his way to the Clawhammer's feet to hack away at the ice trapping the dwarf.

"Aye, Draggor mate, you awake before us?" the word 'awake' is strained and questioned, as if unsure if it was sleep.

Quote:
The wolf danced in the alpine forest. A hare darted under a low-hanging branch, and the wolf was about to follow, but he paused. His ears perked up. A low rumble was building in the distance.

In a moment, he saw it. A white wall of snow was careening down the mountainside, engulfing everything in its path. The wolf's heart filled with fear. There was nowhere to hide. The avalanche was a deafening roar now. The wolf braced itself.

And when the impact hit, Phineas awoke.
Phineas blinked the frost from his eyelashes. As consciousness returned, his mind filled with confusion.

Oh Gods, that wave...

Phineas remembered everything in a sudden rush and jolted upright. At once, his senses were assaulted with contradictions. The boat was stationary, no longer rocking against the waves.

How could that be? Did we run aground?

His limbs were numb and heavy, like a bear awaking from the long sleep of winter.

But the wave just hit us - didn't it?

Most of all he felt colder than he had ever felt in his life. He put his hands together and blew into them, kindling a small fire in his palms. The warmth spread through his limbs, and Phineas was glad.

Then he heard Gunnar's shouts. He rushed on deck, slipping on the strange new layer of ice that caked everything. And then he saw the sea ...

It's all ice ... all the way to the shore ... how could this have happened?

He skidded to the rail, saw Dirk's boots, and suddenly realized what was going on.

"DIRK'S OVERBOARD! COME QUICK!" echoing Gunnar through chattering teeth.

There's still time, Phineas convinced himself. He can't have been down there for long. He's going to be hypothermic, but the cold will slow his breathing, give him a few extra minutes underwater. By the gods, think! Gotta boil some water. Gotta get a fire going. He's going to need heat. Blankets. Move it, Phineas!

He skidded dangerously quickly across the icy deck back into the cabin, back to the galley. He slammed firewood into the wood burning stove, igniting it with a snap of his fingers. Got a stock pot of water on the top. Cleared off the frozen plates and cups from the heavy wood table and threw the blankets on top.

Gods, what happened here?

Baern and Ulfren carefully hacks the ice around the boots and before long, the boots are free from their frozen confines. The boots seem rather stiff still though.
Feb 9, 2017 2:20 am
Baern picks them up, examining them closely. He looks around for signs of Dirk, still without saying a word.
Feb 9, 2017 2:22 am
Baern pulls the boots right off of Dirk's feet, but by the blue hue to the skin, it doesn't appear like he has unfroze.
Feb 9, 2017 2:29 am
Baern speaks for the first time. "Has anyone any magic that can make our task easier and lessen our chances of hurting Dirk as we hack him out?"
Feb 9, 2017 3:04 am
Billy rushes to the side of the boat and sees his companions feverishly working at the ice with axe and sword. Stop hackin' at that ice fore ya hurt yerselves, boys! he shouts. You ain't doin' no good and if the cap'n's still alive, ya ain't doin' him no favors neither! Looking at the blue tint of Dirk's feet, Billy gets a grim look on his face. Calm yerself, son, he says to Baern. Best to make peace with the idea that this ain't no rescue mission. It's a recovery. Now tie a rope around that poor soul's feet and step back a ways. Make sure ya got hold tight and be ready ta pull.

Billy waits until the rope is securely tied around Dirk's feet and the dwarves have stepped back, ready to pull on the rope. He reaches into a pouch and pulls out a few grains of sand. Moving his fingers and mumbling a few words, he casts the sand down. Suddenly a hole is opened up around Dirk as the ice around him disappears.

Cast Create or Destroy Water.

Baern, who has stepped back a ways from the hole in the ice, heaves on the rope with Ulfren, pulling Dirk's body up.
Feb 9, 2017 4:31 am
Phineas skidded back on deck only to hear Billy announce Dirk Clawhammer's death. Tears welled up in Phineas's eyes. He thought about Dirk's family, wondered how they were going to tell them.

After Baern and Ulfren hauled up his friend's corpse onto the deck, he knelt beside it. He closed his drab brown eyes and spoke words in the language of the wind and waves, and carved out ancient glyphs inthe air with his fingers.

When he opened them again, his eyes were iridescent and flicked with every shade of blue.

"Will someone aid me? The Clawhammer clan deserves to know what exactly happened here today. A couple minutes of exposure alone could not have killed a man such as Dirk Clawhammer. "

Billy kneels down next to Phineas. It weren't just simple exposure. Frozen in ice, all it takes is a couple minutes. And this ain't no natural cold. Everything about it is durn peculiar. But the cap'n deserves a thorough goin'-over. It's the least we can do. Body and soul're outta our hands. Makin' sure a the truth's 'bout all we can do fer 'im now.
OOC:
Taking the Help action to give Phineas advantage on his medicine check.

"It don't make sense," grunts Ulfren. "We seen bodies a' those that were caught in the cold, fresh-froze up on the snowy peaks. None of them looked like this."
Feb 9, 2017 5:36 am
Phineas appreciated the conversation while looking at the grisly sight of his dead friend. Billy's insights made everything clearer.

"How long he was there I cannot say. But it was not minutes. I'd wager days--though how that is possible I know not."
Feb 9, 2017 12:56 pm
Gunnar steps back from the dwarves clustered around their fallen commander. What evil could have caused this? Baern says Dirk has been in the ice for days. How can that be? Only a few moments ago Clawhammer was issuing orders from the quarterdeck!

Gunnar scans the horizon, trying to sight their island destination, expecting to see smoke rising from it. Scowling, he looks up to the crow's nest where in the past few days he has spent hours on voluntary lookout duty.
OOC:
Dirk is was the unit commander. But the ship still has a captain, right?

"What are you talking about, boy?" Ulfren barks at Baern, growing frustrated at the lack of a clear explanation. "He just went over!"
