Gameplay - Bad Moon Rising Part 2

Feb 20, 2017 8:04 am
August 29th

The last few days have been fairly routine. There's been no time to dig deeper into Ekhardt's history and no further clues have come up. The surveillance on the accountants apartment shows nothing out of the ordinary, just an old man going about his every day routine.

That is until August 29th.

Skegg has been reassigned and Phaerin and Noss are now a two-Judge team. On the morning of the 29th, before morning briefing, they are contacted by Tek. It seems there was an explosion last night at the Warren Buffet conapts. All surveillance was disrupted.

Cleanup have made the way safe and a body was found in Bennetti's apartment and Forensics are on route. You are given dispensation to miss briefing and get over there.
Feb 20, 2017 7:41 pm
"We knew it was a matter of time. C'mon lets get over there and see what happened to our favorite retired accountant." Noss grumbles to Phaerin and they mount up.
Feb 20, 2017 7:42 pm
Phaerin nods as she mounts up and follows Noss to the site.

He certainly was able to keep his nose clean, eh? She says, with just a bit of snark to her tone.
Feb 20, 2017 9:18 pm
Arriving at the conapts, the place is a mess. It seems the two floors above Bennetti's apartment were blown up, causing huge amounts of property damage and at the same time putting out all power, cameras and all.

Heading past the cleanup droids, you find forensics in attendance. Bennetti, as expected, is dead, sitting in a chair where he was shot through the forehead. He is unrestrained and from all the evidence, the accountant may have known his attacker. Forensics are unable to produce any DNA although there are hair and fibre traces, both draw blanks against MACs database. The only piece of evidence is a red scarf.
Feb 20, 2017 11:40 pm
"Red scarf...?" Noss says aloud, once he received the run-down. "That's all we have? Peculiar." He makes a note here or there in his notebook. "At least we have some DNA to cross check if we do grab a suspect." He says scratching his head with his pen. He thinks on the explosions. Why blow the building if Bennetti was already dead? Surely the old man wouldn't have stayed around with his building going up in smoke like that. Covering evidence perhaps? A litany of questions flow through Noss' mind.
Feb 21, 2017 12:53 am
The red scarf is a trademark of the Van Zandt crime family, noted enemies of the Contraltos

As he's dead, you can access the accountant's personal computer and bank records if you wish

Also, one of Forensics hand you a data memory slug found within his personal belongings. It's data pretected so anyone with Computers 2 can try and hack it with a roll (or Data Access special technique - no roll required)
Feb 21, 2017 1:20 am
Let's see if I can manage to get into this real quick. Phaerin says as she plugs the slug into his computer.

Rolls

Computers (+2 if I can use int as well.) - (2d6+2)

(62) + 2 = 10

Feb 21, 2017 8:00 pm
It turns out the slug is both password protected and encrypted but it's short work for Phaerin who has is cracked in a matter of minutes. Within is Bennetti's daily diary, kept almost consisitently over the last 30 years.

The diary contains personal recollections and observations. Real names for people are not used, so, although the diary contains information that might incriminate members of the Contralto crew in all manner of crimes, there is no hard evidence to use the diary to trigger direct investigations.
Much of the diary is humdrum, however the following entry catches your attention.

‘15th March 2106
I don’t like what I’ve discovered about Jani. She’s
definitely talked to the heat and I’ve seen the
conversations. She really has it in for the for Drum
and what she’s told them will really beat down on
the Drum just like the Sovs beat down on us not
that long ago. If the top of the food chain learns
what she said – hell, if the Drum learns what she
said – that’s it: curtains for poor Jani.
So, here I am, a man who never knowingly took
a stupid breath, about to take the biggest, most
stupid breath I can. Top of the food chain wants
answers about the Drum so I’m gonna feed ‘em
in. Jonny-Boy getting killed like that makes it the
easiest and best way – I pin it all on Jonny-Boy
and Jani stays in the clear. She never needs to
know. There’s lots she never needs to know. Like
how I’ve loved her every day since the day I first
saw her. She won’t look at a schlep like me so I’m
not fooling myself here but I can do things for her
that prove all that love to myself.

Thanks for dying Jonny-Boy – you saved a life.’
Feb 22, 2017 7:59 pm
Noss reads it over her shoulder. "This happened 25 years ago. Still, it could be related to our synth cafe shooting." Noss remarks. "Those three bullet bags were being questioned on whether or not they know who spilled a secret. Maybe the secret was that this Jani did what Jonny-Boy was blamed for. Could have been revealed by our accountant." Noss frowns hard though, he knows these connections are just shot-in-the-dark conjectures.
Feb 24, 2017 5:25 pm
It makes more sense than anything else we have at the moment. Phaerin says as she rubs her head in her tell-tale "what the hell is going on" move.
Feb 24, 2017 9:39 pm
OOC:
Again, is there some sort of roll I can do to see a relation or a lead? Otherwise I may take this to a higher up of the family.
Feb 25, 2017 12:39 am
No need for a roll, but searching archives for the names mentioned might be a good start.
Feb 28, 2017 9:17 pm
Phaerin stalks out to her Lawmaster, tapping into her computer. In a few moments, she started polling the archives for any mention of Jani, Drum, or Jonny-Boy in relation to the Contraltos. Any evidence collected from previous crime scenes, letters, things of that nature.

Feb 28, 2017 10:28 pm
Archive searches for Jani and Drum return nothing but a search for the name Johnny and 2106 brings back a Justice Department report of a pile-up on the Ralph Little skedway in Sector 9 on October 5th, 2106. Weather Control was out of action following the Apocalypse War and the road was wet.
Some jerk changed lane too rapidly and caused a major pile up that killed thirteen. One of the deceased was Jonathan Bugatti, also known as Bones, a middle-ranking racketeer for the Contralto crime family.
Feb 28, 2017 11:48 pm
Noss rubs the back of his head and sighs. "I'm not sure what I expected. No telling who else would know about this. Not unless we find something on "Jani" or "Drum"."
Mar 7, 2017 4:59 am
Noss finally straightens up and puts his hands on his hips. "I wouldn't normally do this, but I think we should go to the top. If this gunman is somehow connected to our terrorist copycat, then we could be in for it. I have a feeling this "Drum" is likely the top brass of the Contraltos. Lets visit the head of the family, see what they make of this. If his reputation precedes him, he should be at his favorite bar most days." He heads away from the monitors, "Lets ride."

Sounds as good a plan as any, really. They've got to be concerned that someone is taking out their low level men for some reason. Phaerin says, rubbing her fingers through her short hair.
Mar 8, 2017 8:03 am
Max Contralto is not an easy man to track down. He lives in the penthouse level pf Jimmy Gandolfini but after asking around, the Judges find he hangs out in the Badaboom Bar and Grill of the Gandolfini entertainment level.

It's a seedy bar offering continual lap dancing, karaoke, shuggy and all manner of low-rent pastimes whilst just remaining within the law.

The head of the Contralto family is a massive imposing man in his mid-40's with slicked-back dark hair. He wears a loud shirt and sharp jacket.
Mar 8, 2017 8:11 am
As you approach he appears very affable, "Yeah, hi Judges. Have a beer. No? Too bad, it's good right now but I guess you're on official duties so I understand..."
Mar 8, 2017 9:50 pm
"Max Contralto. We are investigating the murder of three of your boys last week, as well as the accountant Bennetti." Noss says, glancing around at what kind of muscle he may have from under his helmet. "We were hoping to ask you a few questions."
Mar 8, 2017 11:05 pm
There appear to be a large number of bodyguards surrupticiously scattered around.

‘Listen, whoever put my friends in the Resyk line-up, I wanna know about ‘em. Sure, I got people don’t like me; you got people don’t like you. But what happened in that synthi-caf bar was a dreadful, dreadful thing and none of my enemies have any reason to go pullin’ stunts like that. Am I gonna do anythin’ stupid? Come on…
I’m a legitimate businessman. But I got contacts, Justices and I got my contacts contacting their contacts and I wanna find the creep who murdered not only my friends but also that poor sap who got in the way. Hey, let me know if you find he’s got family. I wanna make sure his family gets by, y’know? Sorta like a charitable donation of Good Citizenship.
Seriously Justices… You do your jobs. Find who killed my boys.’
Mar 10, 2017 6:23 am
"Glad to hear you are so willing. Let me ask first, do you know a "Jani"?
Mar 10, 2017 11:48 am
As Noss grills Max Contralto a bit, Phaerin has pulled out her pad and started detailing his answers, looking more for clues than content.

Phaerin doesn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

"Code name?" he seems to be thinking, "No-one I know would have had connection with Bennetti. What I do know is that hit in the coffee shop stinks of something more professional than who my people think might be behind it. Almost Judge-like precision. Perhaps you should be asking the SJS for information? If you find the bastard, you let me know."
Mar 11, 2017 10:19 pm
Noss does not show it, but that actually seems like a pretty good idea. He finishes up with the interview and eventually he and Phaerin find themselves leaving the bar. "I've had a thought Judge." He says to Phaerin as they head to their lawmasters. "If that terrorist attack from last week and the cafe shootout are related, then it could actually be a judge." He moves his head towards the bar saying "Contralto in there touched on it, and it got me thinking. If its connected to this Jani, what if it is a female judge? That may narrow down our search."
Mar 12, 2017 12:06 am
That's a good thought, Noss. A judge would have the technical capacity and training to carry out both parts. We know it's not one, or at least we think it's not one, that was connected to the dead judge in the slabster. she says, nodding slightly as they get to their Lawmasters. I'm still new to this physical work. Lead on Noss!
Mar 12, 2017 3:34 am
"Next I thought we'd look something up again. On 15th March 2106, Bennetti's journal said that this "Jani" talked to the heat. Likely we are the heat, so I thought we may look up anyone connected to the family that may have had an interview or given a tip to us on that date. Its a thin chance, but worth a check."
Mar 12, 2017 9:20 am
Checking through the regular department records yields nothing and there are no records of Jonny Bugatti or anyone else mentioned acting as an informant. If this is connected to a judge though, the SJS records may prove more fruitful. It will involve jumping through a lot of hoops including getting assent of Sector Chief DiMaggio.
Mar 13, 2017 3:49 am
We go to the record facility and Noss attempts to convince them to let him in without need of said assent.

The SJS records show that in June os 2106, the year of the pileup that involved Johnny Bugatti, an investigation was launched into Judge Aiken Moon, following information supplied by one Anji Karter. The investigating SJS Judges were Cripps and Eckhardt, with assistance by street Judge DiMaggio - the current sector chief. Moon was arrested in July 2106, interrogated and sentenced to twenty years on Titan.

Judge Aiken Moon was taking bribes from members of the Contralto family although the money was never retrieved and Moon did not reveal under interrogation who had made the payments. Some low-level arrests resulted but nothing that would ever injure the syndicate. Video recordings of some of the interrogation sessions are available and they show Cripps and Eckhardt subjecting Moon to an incredible amount of physical punishment in a bid to make him talk.
Moon does not break once, despite the amount of brutality inflicted upon him. One memorable clip from the video shows a barely recognisable Moon, face a bloody pulp, fingers broken, spitting-out a mouthful of teeth and grinning slyly to
the camera.

Further records from the Titan Penal Archives show that Moon was amongst that rare group to survive the full term on Titan.
He was released in September 2126 with a travel permit for Earth but there the trail ends: Aiken Moon disappears.
Mar 14, 2017 9:00 pm
Noss grits his teeth in anger as he reads it and finally slams his fist down. "Anji. That's our Jani. And Ekhardt coming up tortured and killed? That smells like a vendetta to me!" Noss points to the name on the screen. "Moon sounds like out guy, the low life Judge-killing traitor. All the pieces are fitting." He takes a few steps back and a few deep breathes to calm himself down. "If it keeps going like this, Cripps may be in trouble. Lets see his current status."
Mar 14, 2017 9:51 pm
You both know Cripps well from the academy. After being wounded in the course of duty he stepped down from the SJS and opted for a position in the Academy of Justice, becoming a tutor in Basic Applied Violence. You both remember him from as a specialist in interrogation techniques with applied violence and always seemed to enjoy his work.

He boards at the Academy, safest please he could be.
Mar 14, 2017 11:29 pm
Noss is somewhat relieved at the information. "One less judge in this maniac's warpath. Phaerin, anyway you can track Moon over the net?" Noss asks, not really understanding too much about the subject.
Mar 15, 2017 12:42 am
I'm sure I can give it a hell of a shot. she says, cracking her fingers. I'll have to set up some quick tracers and a few snoop programs, but that shouldn't take more than a few hours to kick on and set about doing their thing. Obviously we'll have to pull in some general streetcam feeds and..... her voice trails off as her fingers fly over her console, tapping in order requests and accessing what files she could.

Despite all of Phaerin's best efforts, their is no trace in the system of Moon, no record of residence, no indication on cameras anywhere in the Megacity. Facial recog can run indefinately but the data pool of surveillance around the city is so huge, it could be months before you find a hit.

While looking, the Tek Judge also looks for record of Anji Karter. Records state that she left Sector 13 in 2112 to live in seclusion in the well heeled area known as Bethany Beach, one of the districts of sector 119 bordering the Black Atlantic.

Following up on this will need to wait. Shift is over.
Mar 18, 2017 11:10 pm
The next day, Phaerin and Noss are summoned to the scene of a murder.

In a rancid alley in the lower levels of the city, some juves have found a body in a gruesome condition. The throat has been ripped out, the entrails torn from the abdomen and devoured and the limbs are covered in bites and scratches. When Tek and Med Division have finished with the corpse, they reach the same conclusion: definitely an animal. A big animal. A frenzied animal. Someone either has a pet klegghound or there is an awfully big, real-life dog wandering Sector 13.
Mar 20, 2017 4:42 am
"Klegghounds would be one thing, but if its a dog then it would be a first for me." Noss says shaking his head at the scene. "Anyway to track which way this thing went?" He asks the forensic team.
Mar 20, 2017 11:41 am
Same here Noss. Do we have any idea who the vic is in this case? I'm wondering if this has any connection to the other weird things we've seen.
Mar 24, 2017 9:38 pm
Checking the crime scene for evidence you find the following:

Massive paw-like prints left in the blood spill from the victim

Some shreds of fur, possibly pulled out of the creature's hide by the victim during the struggle

Some clothing fibres from some kind of coarse cotton.

A strange of scarlet silk - high quality fabric - that does not appear to belong to the deceased.

There are no further tracks. The victim, one Tomas Spugfield was a low level data entry clerk, no priors and seems to have no connection with your other cases.
Mar 25, 2017 1:45 am
Noss makes note of the scarlet silk. "Red cloth again? We've seen this before."
Apr 28, 2017 11:55 pm
Phaerin's Lawmaster chirrups and a message from Sector Chief comes through.

::Judge en route to join your team, Med Judge Merrick. Will be useful in ongoing case.::

Phaerin is very familiar with the Judge, they trained together in the early years at the academy before going off to their own specialisations. Moments later, a lawmaster rolls up, the familiar Med Judge insignia on the side panels.
Apr 29, 2017 9:09 am
Judge Merrick nods to Phaerin as he enters. "Phaerin. Looks like you've pulled an interesting one."

He crouches over the prints, examining them and the fur, then draws his boot knife to lift some fur up to his mask and takes a sniff.

At his analysis, Noss adds the detail to his note. "Anyway you can ID the cologne?"
May 9, 2017 3:09 pm

The fur is analysed but doesn't give you much. The best guess is that the hair is definately not any dog breed known to the Justice Dept, wolf is a more likely suggestion but clearly fresh not preserved or artificial. Given that wolves are little more than legend in this day and age, except perhaps outside the city.

What is interesting is a link to a number of other unsolved crimes. Six similar murders in other sectors over the past few weeks, a clear trail originating in Sector 166 which borders the Wall and following a more or less straight line up to Sector 13. Bodies , both male and female have been found in identical conditions.

Going by the previous patterns, the search area would still by fairly large and for a three Judge team next to impossible without a sensor of some kind.

Nothing like that exists, but something could be jury rigged between you to serve the purpose. It will take a day or so and require 3 rolls.

Phaerin takes the other Judges to one of the many Tek labs and gets to work on creating something that could detect certain scents. The prototype device (which you may name) essentially extracts the scent from a physical piece of evidence and will track any similar scents within a block. Though not as accurate as Phaerin would like, it will make this particular hunt a lot easier. The computer elements are incredibly glitchy though, the program requires recallibrating every hour or so (requiring a further Computers roll to get it operating each time) but that should be sufficient to cover a blocks radius.
