NTYE's Trait Pools are used for two things.
Health and Effort.
Every task in NTYE has a difficulty level, ranging from 1-8.
1 = Cinch
2 = Simple
3 = Standard
4 = Demanding
5 = Difficult
6 = Challenging
7 = Heroic
8 = Impossible
A task with a difficulty of "1" is called a Cinch, and is an automatic success. No need to roll the dice.
A task of "8" is Impossible. NTYE is a 1d6 game, so there's no way to roll an 8 on a six-sided dice.
The way to reduce the difficulty of a task is to spend points from a relevant Trait Pool as Effort.
Oggy spends +2 Tough points to reduce the difficulty to "2" (Simple).
He rolls 1d6 and gets a "3".
It's a success, he successfully reaches the top of the wall—and he reduces his Tough Pool from "3" to "1".Trait Pools are also diminished when the player takes damage. Generally, health points are taken from the Tough Pool first, then the Fast, then Smart. If Tough, Fast, and Smart are all "0"—the player is Conked Out and they are out of the action until the encounter is over.
Trait Pools can be replenished using Fun Points, but players only start with three of these. Or, another player can spend an Awesome point to refill their pools.
He only has "1" Tough left, and the Slug Bug Slime does +2 damage.
So, his Tough Pool is reduced to "0" and his Fast Pool goes from "2" to "1".
Oggy draws out his staff and moves to WhackAttack the Slug Bug, difficulty "3".
He has no Tough points to use for Effort and reduce the difficulty, so he rolls the dice.
Oggy rolls a "2". This means he will miss his attack, but a team mate spends "1" Awesome to make his roll a "3" and he succeeds.
The Slug Bug's Level is usually their Difficulty Class, and their Health is their only stat pool. In this case, one hit with a +2 attack eliminates the threat.
That's about all there is to know about Encounters.

Oggy reaches the top of the wall and is attacked by a slimy Slug Bug (Level 3, Health 2).
