I've closed this game and made it private.

I think this means that, no one else can join... and only we can access the forums. Is that correct?
Feb 25, 2017 5:25 pm
That should be correct.
Feb 25, 2017 7:42 pm
Yay! And welcome Drama!
Feb 25, 2017 10:32 pm
Alright, we have a Quorum!

Bill (Stealthy Ninja)
Roxin (Flying T-Rex)
Emma (Magical Painter)
Luna (Kind Mage)

We've got lots of "invisible/stealth" abilities in this group, so I'll try and tailor the adventure to really ham that part up.

Please read the Subforum post on Gameplay and let me know if you have any questions. Later today (I'm on Pacific Time, BTW) I'll post the initial call to adventure.

Oh, one other thing. My daughter is just on the front end of learning to read. She knows her alphabet, and can sound out some simpler words, but would need help reading anything for understanding.

How is everyone else on this? I could make fun visuals/puzzles with early-readers in mind, for them to wrestle with (ultimately relying on parents help to finally interpret) or ...?
Quote:
For example, I could write a message in "rune characters" and provide a key, which kids could translate first before reading... but that would require parents to help—
Feb 25, 2017 10:46 pm
Realistically my son won't have any issue with any of the reading side of things (7 year old reading at an 11th grade level, it's frightening).

That said, the puzzle type things would definitely be useful for him to push the thought stuff. Ultimately, he was just really excited to have a character that was all his to make up. :)

Alice might need my help reading a couple words here or there, but for the most part she could read this fine. I'm mostly here to help her with the rules and with spelling, I think. I think those ideas sound fun, though.
Feb 25, 2017 10:48 pm
So much for using s-p-e-l-l-i-n-g as a way to hide things from your kids.
Quote:
"Hey honey, do we have any i-c-e-c-r-e-a-m?"
Feb 25, 2017 10:49 pm
Yeah, that has unfortunately stopped working. We try that with our son, and Alice just says it out loud anyway when she figures it out.
Feb 25, 2017 11:05 pm
Yeah, my wife and I have taken to spelling things using the French or German alphabet, but the opposite language for the word to mask things.
Quote:
"Hey honey, do we have any g-l-a-c-e" but with the letter pronounced in the German style.
Feb 25, 2017 11:14 pm
Shoot, you could use that kind of spelling to keep ME in the dark! Nice.
Feb 26, 2017 12:05 am
Yep, no problems here, my kid's on a similar level to Drama's and yes, it is scary!

She loves puzzles so that'll be awesome.
Feb 28, 2017 10:45 pm
I tried to explain to my wife about the spelling icecream in French with German accent/alphabet pronunciation... and failed. So, we might be one of those families... in a few years, I'll start wearing suspenders, my truck will somehow get parked in my lawn and no longer work, and my kids will think that everyone drinks Orange Soda for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

One particular difficulty (I am now realizing) in running PbP games with kids... is demonstrated in this exchange of dialog with Gnomsky at the Hero Shack. Getting our kids to play off of the dialog that has come before can be difficult. It's much easier to ignore someone's suggestion when they aren't right in front of you. Roxin's suggestion to all chip in was a good one, but my daughter didn't care about that suggestion because she knew she wanted the purple stuff.

In Real Life, she would have, at the very least, acknowledged the suggestion with a "No" or "That's a good idea, but..." or something. Anyway, it's now on my mind with her to help coach her through the dialog, making sure she understands that even though this is a very asynchronous method for playing, the events are happening back-to-back in Storia.

Inevitably, all of our kids are going to make suggestions to the group, and those may go ignored. So, helping them understand the role of dialog, and the back and forth or give and take of communication is critical to making people feel included, etc.

I'm not suggesting we start coaching them on what to say, just voicing my awareness of something I hadn't anticipated, because it doesn't happen (at least not the same way) in face-to-face games/interactions. I will try and be aware of the impact that my NPCs have on the group when entering in to discussion too... to try and be more intentional about constructing conversations.

Food for thought.

I'm really trying hard to type in the present-tense. Not sure if that's the trend on PbP games or not. It seems like me default is to lean towards past tense. So, bear with my inconsistencies! :)
Mar 2, 2017 11:57 am
I have the same problem in my other games! So, ditto! Luckily in this one I can basically just type whatever my daughter says.

I'll have a reply up for Roxin in the morning sometime. We had a big family dinner (12 people over at the house) tonight, so our kiddo is bushed.
Mar 4, 2017 3:41 am
No worries, I'm still fleshing out the series of maps for Croaking Castle.
I'll post in the morning and then we have an overnighter birthday party (Bill the Ninja is turning 7)... and then family celebration of the same on Sunday.

We've got some fun stuff coming up, so stay frosty!!

In one of the last adventure posts, I mentioned that the sun was about to set in the Left. This was a flash of inspiration that I incorporated having totally forgotten that I'd already made a reference to cardinal directions with the Thinkem Stone. But, I like the idea of global positioning being discussed from a bird's eye view—hence UP, RIGHT, DOWN, LEFT... they are essentially parallels to the cardinal directions, only a little more imaginative/inventive.

I also think that when I'm done with this adventure, I'm going to strip out any No Thank You Evil references (Big Blue Feud, Storia, etc.) and generalize it so that I can freely distribute it as a PDF without violating MCG's licensing terms.

Hey, sorry. My daughter has been pretty sick lately so she's been resting a lot and we haven't had the chance to check on this together. Should be able to post soon!
Mar 14, 2017 12:38 pm
No worries, sorry to hear that. Hope she feels better soon. We had a sick someone in our house from Christmas through the end of January! It's not fun.

How is everyone with combat? I'm not talking about blood and guts or killing. But, I am inclined to include some bumped and bruised physical altercations. The results being: knocked silly, fainting, exhausted, retreating, surrendering...

However, if the group approaches scenarios with less hostility then we could do more social encounters where the results are more like: convinced, persuaded, apologetic, negotiable, etc.

Quick Check-In
How is everyone doing? Are things moving along okay? Too slow? Too fast? Not enough rolling? More combat? More social/puzzle encounters?

Encounters:
1. Gnomsky's Shack of Heroes - secret items
2. Taffy's Troubled Camp - quest acquisition

I'm personally enjoying it, and my daughter asks me often about when she can take a turn in "No Thank You Evil," and seems to really enjoy it too! I've learned the biggest thing to help her with is PbP etiquette (mostly not to post too many actions at once). I think the pacing has been good, though. I apologize if we're slowing anything down. It's been hectic here lately; mostly me. :) But definitely don't take that as any sign that we aren't enjoying it.

I think what has been thrown out so far as encounters have been great. Everything is weird and cartoony and perfect for setting this world apart. I know that "everything is great" isn't the most helpful critique, but I really can't think of anything that I could ask you to change :) We're having a good time.
Apr 10, 2017 12:41 pm
Same here, my kid loves it though I tend to forget to check in (thanks to running so many other games) so apologies if we hold anything up.

OOC:
Sorry! We're at the beach for vacation and this rental has substantially worse internet and signal than any we've had in the past. So I'm here, just slowly able to update things!
Apr 12, 2017 2:23 pm
No worries—I just haven't GM'd a play-by-post game before, so wanted to make sure I wasn't "dropping the ball." :)
I'm glad everyone is enjoying it. My daughter also asks about it frequently, but in a sort of secretive, code-like way. As if any question asked in ambiguity, totally lacking any context, is obviously related to our game here.

We could be driving home from a birthday party, and out of the blue she'll say:
Quote:
So uh dad... anything instresting [sic] happen yet?
Apr 19, 2017 8:47 pm
Roxin was going to drop down and shoot his meteor launcher. But then I figured I'd let my son figure out what to do. Now to wait a few hours until I can find that out.
Apr 19, 2017 9:12 pm
Awesome! I'll be curious to see how my daughter thinks this through too!
Oct 26, 2017 1:38 am
Unfortunately, I'm going to bow out of this one I think. It was great fun, I hope you all continue along strongly!
Oct 26, 2017 2:11 am
alas. same here. life (specifically work) has gotten hectic. sorry everyone. Chalk this one up as another failed PbP game.
