Chapter 0: A Star Falls

Feb 26, 2017 9:12 am
It has been a mere 4 hours since a new star fell from the sky. Now the skies broil with angry blue light. The town elders have called together the most competent townsfolk together in the Dog and Pony to discuss these formidable events. Old Graegor and Claymore are currently arguing, Graegor stating that sending people out to examine the star is certain suicide, Claymore pointing out that not knowing what fresh horrors the town may face will kill everyone here.
Feb 26, 2017 2:19 pm
Flynn had been called into the inn, but more because he happened to be around Claymore when this argument was called than because he was a first choice for the council being held. As the argument ensues, Flynn stands by himself in a corner, occasionally playing a few bars on his violin to make sure the tuning is impeccable.
OOC:
Flynn wouldn't just insert himself anywhere in the conversation, so I'll have to hear what's actually being said to be able to know if he would enter in. Of course, he will eventually, but until then I can't say.

Just a few hours ago, Riach was patrolling the wooded area around the fields while several townsfolk were harvesting a meager crop of potatoes on the outskirts of town. When the new star fell, Riach gathered the panicked farmers and hurried into town. It is clear that this new event has everyone on edge. As he made his way to The Pony the towns folk were gathering in the square before the inn, staring at the broiling blue sky, many calling for some action to be taken to protect the town. Inside the inn, Dernal calmly listens to the arguments of Graegor and Claymore. When he sees Riach enter, What news? Dernal asks. Did you see any new activity out there? Riach responds, None, the wood became more quiet than ever when the star struck. I see you have taken council, what have you all decided? We need to go see if there are new threats coming before its too late. I am ready as always.

Before either of the two arguers have a chance to respond guard, Astrik, runs into the tavern. The shades are... Gone. There are none around the border, and there's reports from the salt lane that there is nothing there either. It's almost as if the new star scared them off. Claymore seizes upon this momentum and retorts. See, we have a volunteer and the way might be safe! the Druid retorts Even if that's the case I don't want any of my rangers heading out. Claymore insists, They'll need one, to act as a guide and food source as we don't have the supplies to spare to send tangible food.
Feb 27, 2017 10:25 pm
Entering momentarily after Astrik, arrives Angel, who instantly kneels before Ser Claymore, sword drawn and planted to the floor, Greetings father, I assume you've heard the news? she rises, sheathing her sword. I await your orders. she offers a subtle smile at her father. Could this new star offer the hope we've needed so desperately all these years? she says in her thoughts.

"Welp;" Flynn interjects with a final pluck of his violin string, "don't seem to be much question of it, now does there?" He steps closer to Claymore and Graegor so as to be more included in the conversation. "We all know we can't jes' sit around here all our live-long days, now can we? Wha's the point o' that?" He gestures around the tavern. "What use's sittin' 'round here on our duffs an' doin' nothing. Besides, if we send a few out teh investergate, it won't be that big o' a loss. Send me--I'll go." he shrugs. "Town'll be a bit lackin' on the sing-song side, but I'll do more good goin' out there'n sittin' here singin' away." He jerks a thum at Riach. "Me'n this guy can do that job; seems he's rairin' teh go out'n get hisself killed, same as me!"

Everyone knows everyone else in town, there are few secrets when you have to fight for survival every day. Riach knows Flynn is well capable, but he still rolls his eyes at the bard, Flynn, you are welcome to come and keep the shades away with that voice of yours. Besides, the folk here will appreciate you all the more after missing your entertainment for a bit. Riach turns to Graegor and Dernal that is if our wise leaders choose not to hold us back.
Feb 28, 2017 2:28 am
The doors swing open and Lilith sweeps into the room. She is wearing a leather jerkin, and her longow is slung over her shoulder. These things, as well as the strangeness that now hangs about her like a cloak were last seen on the day she saved Joab & his family from the boar.

She doesn't say a word, but simply stands and listens.

Dernal retorts to the the Rangers glower, Guarding the salt lane must deprive you of the true blessing Flynn provides to us in town, his presence will be missed...

Meanwhile Claymore drawn away from the arguing for a moment, softly speaking to Angel. For a mission of such risk as we are proposing I would not order anyone to it. You are of course welcome to consider whatever course you seem appropriate.

Old Greagor concedes, You seem to have ample people willing to throw away their lives, including a foodbringer. But I point out that the dark star is known to have been arcane in nature, and not to besmirch your knowledge Flynn your study of such forces are, shallow if I'm not mistaken. Send another arcanist with the group or I feel nothing of note will even come from their sacrifice.
Feb 28, 2017 6:00 am
Evangeline nods her head, Well father, I wish to volunteer on this investigation. It's better to have an extra sword around just in case things go awry. I have no arcane knowledge whatsoever, but I can provide medical attention if that need also proves true. Angel mumbles on. She gets the urge to hone in on her senses for the moment, as a precaution.
OOC:
Using Divine Sense: the presence of strong evil registers on your sense like a noxious odor, and powerful good rings like heavenly music in your ears. As an action, you can open your awareness to detect such forces. Until the end of your next turn, you know the location of any celestial, fiend, or undead within 60 feet of you that is not behind total cover. You know the type of any being whose presence you sense, but not its identity. Within the same radius, you also detect the presence of any place or object that has been consecrated or desecrated, as with the hallow spell. You can use this feature a number of times equal to 1+Cha modifier. When you finish a long rest, you regain all expended uses.
Mar 1, 2017 4:10 am
Ever since the Darkstar fell everywhere became permeated by some amount of evil energy. To your divine sense this is manifest as a faint stale obnoxious odor, the new star hasn't changed this sense in any meaningful way
OOC:
As the tavern has very few windows you don't really have much line of sight outside the building. You detect no fiends, undead or celestials.
Greagor nods to acknowledge Evangeline, he seems to be slowly accepting that this mission will go through. Having a gifted healer such as yourself will certainly increase the odds of survival I guess, and your nack for divinity may be help in the an understanding of this object. But I still say with out someone else at least familiar with the Arcane, this mission has already failed before it's set off.
Mar 1, 2017 4:33 am
Lilith steps forward. Ignoring everyone else, even the town leaders, her eyes are fixed on Evangeline. "Doomed or not, I'll go with ye. Shades 're gone 'round me hut but sumthin' worse comes. I feel it in me bones."
Mar 1, 2017 4:44 am
Greagor, about to complain about the number of people who are signing themselves up for death pauses just before speaking. You know what, between the two of you, indicating two Lilith and Flynn You might be able to see what's going on. We can't risk Thomaz or his boys anyway, their far to frail to survive the trip.
OOC:
Thomaz is the towns best wizard, and his boys are his students (wizard and sorceror respectively). The three of them are the only pure arcane casters the town has, and they are key to maintaining the ward.
Dernal and Claymore both nod. Claymore speaks to the assembled I'm happy with the numbers. In fact I would be reluctant to send anyone else. Were already going to be running light until you lot get back. You have your things, that will have to suffice as we don't have enough to spare. You should go talk to the Wizard before you head off, they should be that direction anyway, as it's the westward wards that are being worked on at the moment.
Mar 1, 2017 5:02 am
Riach turns to Dernal's daughter, who has been standing in a shadow, and pulls out a sprig of mistletoe. He quietly murmurs a prayer to nature. His hand fills with the familiar berries that they all take turns eating to stretch the real food. Melodi, someone can use these today. We will be back as soon as we can, take care of everyone. He looks to his companions and heads toward the door of the inn.
Mar 1, 2017 11:30 am
"I can heal people too, ya know," Flynn mutters, "an' I got jus' as much magic as Vangi here, I jus' do it a li'l bit diff'rnt." When those listening look at him, he looks up quickly. "What? Oh, yes, I'm ready to go. Always! Bards pack as to move every day."
Mar 1, 2017 4:25 pm
Angel responds Even though this new star made the shades dissappear, I can still sense their presence. Father, can you muster the knights to patrol with the guards? Other than that, shall we go? she offers a warm smile to her companions. Oh, and Astrik... get the chessboard set up for when I return?
Mar 1, 2017 10:11 pm
Grigor has been listening in and steps up from a table that holds only his second flagon of ale of the night. This adventure you speak of, I rquest to come as well. As you know, Ser Claymore, I can offer protection and security to the others, he says. Having myself could prove useful in your endeavors, he adds.

OOC:
we're off to see the wizard?

As Riach leaves the The Dog and Pony he attempts to calm the townsfolk outside. The elders will let you know what's happening, everything will be alright. Please let us through.

Rolls

Persuasion (Riach is not self aware enough to know he's not good at this) - (1d20-1)

(18) - 1 = 17

Mar 1, 2017 10:57 pm
Though Riach seems to be doing an admirable job, Flynn adds his input as well. "How then, folks, no need to worry. No, no, none at all. Jes' let us through, we're off to see our resident Wiz and we'll be off to see what the jolly-ho is up with this new star drop."
OOC:
What the heck. I hate my life, lol

Persuasion - (1d20+5)

(3) + 5 = 8

Claymore nods to Grigor, It would be a shame to see you leave, you and Angel are my best knights after all. I won't stop you from going though, as you are right. It seems like they will need your protection more then us.

***

After barely managing to calm the crowd to make your way through, and making what preparations was necessary, the five of you head to the western edge of the town boarder. The fiery light from the crash sight acts as a beacon shining the way. It is impossible to tell what time of day it might be, but you suspect the dim sun should be hitting the horizon soon. The arcane chants can be heard before the wizards come into view, a lot of shouting is apparently involved in the ritual. As you get closer the wizards can be seen, the three of them forming a kind of procession; taking a step, casting some salt while chanting then repeat. The wizards do not stop their work as you approach, though you are aware of the fact that you can interrupt the rite with no consequence.
