1.3 Sanctuary - the Dungeon Town

Mar 3, 2017 10:08 am
Following the road down past the black lake, you encounter little in the way of traffic other than the occasional fisherman sat on the banks of the the lake in the gloom trying their hand at finding some food. You do see one or two who have caught fish and their catch looks less than appetising. Slimy black fish with bulbous heads and a single eye on a stalk. You reckon you'd rather fight it than fry it up and eat it.

You start to approach the outskirts of the small gloomy town in the Devouring Dark's belly. The first shacks are hastily thrown together out of what looks like driftwood but you soon come to realise that this is just the flotsam remaining from what the dungeon digested and spat back out. Various 'citizens' mill around and you can see that this is a cut-throats paradise. Lawless and ungoverned with an uneasy peace barely holding between the residents, most of whom seem to be a collection of either jaded adventurers or monsters of the more acceptable variety - Kobolds, a spattering of Orcs and some Goblins - all thrown together by the circumstances of having been devoured by a more malevolent enemy.

Buildings become much more solidly constructed the further you venture into the town. The tower you saw from a distance looms over everything, positioned at the far end of the town. More immediately though, two things grab your attention. The first is a wooden sign with the words "Welcome to Sanctuary. Crossbow free town." scratched into it. The second is more dramatic. A resounding crash sees a halfling come flying head first through a window to your right and sprawl bleeding at your feet. Looking to see from whence he came you see a tavern, complete with garish brightly lit signage reading "The No Escape Inn".
Mar 3, 2017 2:56 pm
"Well clearly one can escape, one just needs to throw a Halfling through a window and exit..." Xanxus comments before poking the Halfing with the tip of his boot, "Oy, you dead?"
Mar 4, 2017 4:02 am
Domitius chuckled slightly at Xanxus' humor before squatting beside the halfling. Without waiting for permission, he began feeling feeling the skull for signs of fractures or bruising, muttering softly to himself about the skull being so much like a child's but the bones not being nearly as soft. "I wonder if there is a place we can stay where we can leave in a less forceful manner?"
Mar 4, 2017 12:19 pm
"I'd like to see them try to eject me in the same way," Haguk shrugs, moving towards the inn.
Mar 5, 2017 5:13 pm
The Halfling stirs, shakes his head and dusts himself down. Looking back up at the window which he just flew through he smiles, stands up, produces a stick from his pocket and draws a line in the dust of the street where he landed.

He shouts back in through the jagged window "Ten and a half yards if I'm not mistaken". A huge cheer erupts from inside the tavern.

"Somewhere safe to stay? You're not serious are ye. You're in the bowels of a bloody great dungeon. If there's anywhere safe here I'd be surprised, although Sanctuary is as safe as it gets I suppose. Seems the bastard can't get us here. We're like a cancer in it's gut. The No Escape would do you fine, and they'll take your money soon as anyone elses."
Mar 6, 2017 2:57 pm
"Well if one could eject you in the same way they'd been exceptionally strong and we'd likely offer up a bond of friendship to them..." Xanxus offers to Haguk.

"Lead the way Crasher... does the No Escape Inn have those looking for people to do work... say crazier than jumping out a window to find out how far one travels... like... explore the beast to start killing it from within for a cost and to obtain it's riches?" Xanxus inquires his teeth like fangs flashing socialably to the short fellow with the thoughts of possible coin to be made.
Mar 7, 2017 2:51 am
Domitius sat back on his heels, startled, "You're not hur.....you were throw...." Then he laughed, long and hard. Wiping the tears from his eyes, he chortled, "Oh yes, wayward dart, lead us to those who's arms threw you ten and a half yards. We are new and would be pleased to find a patron who might hire our services."
Mar 7, 2017 10:27 pm
As you enter the Inn, you are surprised to note that even as you cross the threshold there is already a glazier repairing the broken window. Your new found Halfling friend seems to pay close attention to exactly how much putty is being applied to the panes and briefly. Once inside the Inn, your attention is drawn to the somewhat shaky clientele, many of which are standing round a board with names and distances marked on it.

Your new friend turns to you. "Nice to meet you chaps. I'm Rolf the Helmet. So called because I prefer to take the blow square on the bare cranium and sarcasm is a popular trait in Sanctuary. Anyway, fella that runs this gaff is called Morthil Harker. He'll see you right."

He points to a large burly man ladeling soup into a wooden bowl. The man looks up and grunts at you.
Mar 8, 2017 2:04 pm
Xanxus nods flicking a random piece of shrapnel out of Rolf's hair before going to see Harker.

"Harker, names Villandrando." he explains pulling back his hood and removing his face mask. "We're looking for a box for the Black Mistress... it's likely in the nastiest parts around here and well guarded. Could you point us to someone who would have a decent map of this place and those who know how to delve into the dark deeper parts that even the mostly insane wouldn't adventure? Also is there any work to be done for those of clever mind or... violent heart?" he states looking at the man with the ladle to gauge his response.
Mar 9, 2017 3:12 am
Looking at the soup the Marthil is ladeling up reminded Domitius that it had been quite some time since his last meal. He added, "And along with that information, might I trouble you for some of that soup?"
Mar 11, 2017 5:02 pm
"Which soup you after? Mushroom Soup or Mushroom Surprise Soup?"

Morthil eyes you all warily while absent-mindedly stirring the ladel. "What's this about a box? Lot's of boxes pass through these parts. Some valuable, some not so. What's so special about this box?"

He returns to stirring the soup then looks up again. "You could try Tord. Anything vaguely of interest usually comes to his attention, whether it wants to or not. You'll have seen his tower at the end of town."
Mar 11, 2017 6:24 pm
"I've had enough surprises for a lifetime," Haguk shrugs, then listens while he waits for a serving of soup. Once he gets some he slurps it loudly. He speaks both between mouthfuls and in the middle of them, causing soup to run down and stain his tunic. "What is it with towers? Why do they always live in a tower? It's never the wizard's hovel."
Mar 12, 2017 2:54 am
"I LOVE surprises!" Blackstar pipes up, rubbing his hands together and taking a seat. "Hit me!"
Mar 13, 2017 4:42 pm
Xanxus thanks the man for the information and opts for Mushroom Soup at least to get a feel for what food will be like for the next few days down here.

"Magi always build towers, store their experiments and research, takes longer for things to escape, better in the long run if there's an explosion. That's why they're out on the outskirts of towns usually. Less damage to the town if there's a fire, explosion, river of accident or something breaks out, they usually go into the wild versus the middle of town. It's odd they get nervous about people coming around with pitchforks and a noose, not because they'll die but because they're likely to disturb something on the way up and they're not ready to take notes on the horrific outcome. That's why some places have mercaneries go in to 'safely' bring the magic user out." he states to Haguk possibly sounding a bit jaded.

Xanxus adjusts a glove and looks to the odder yet chipper member of their party, "You mean the soup right?"
Mar 13, 2017 4:54 pm
"Yeah, sure, the soup, the soup." Blackstar chuckles. The odd man looks around the No Escape Inn. He feels right at home.
Mar 13, 2017 5:41 pm
Domitius leaned toward the pot, trying to get a glimpse of what might be inside, "I'd like the Mushroom Surprise Soup, thank you. What can you tell us about Tord?"
Mar 14, 2017 10:17 am
"Certainly, I always like a customer who asks about our food which is all sourced locally. That's both an ethical decision on our part and a practical one, seeing as we're in the bowels of a huge living dungeon which kind of makes external trade problematic. Oh, but I nearly forgot, you want to know about the Mushroom Surprise soup? Well it's the same as the Mushroom soup except the surprise is that there isn't any mushroom in it. Bread with that?"
Mar 14, 2017 12:22 pm
Blackstar looks genuinely disappointed. "Needs more mayhem, this place does. Way more." he grumbles. An eye stalk sprouts from somewhere in his suit and peers around the room. Plucking the eyeball from its stalk, Blackstar drops it into his soup and continues eating. "Oh good, some bread!"
Mar 14, 2017 6:34 pm
"Told you there were no good surprises," Haguk mutters when told what the surprise is. "Unless you don't like mushrooms I guess."

The conversation at the table next to him catches his attention, and Auskan hears talk of a "box" of some kind of significance. I wonder.., he growls to himself. He works his way over to the table and bluntly interrupts the conversation. "I heard you speaking about some box, one that's under special protection."
Mar 15, 2017 2:19 pm
"Possibly, if special you mean lethal? You know something about something or you interested in making some coin that might get you killed? But if it doesn't... very worthwhile." Xanxus offers up.
Mar 15, 2017 3:50 pm
"I've heard rumors...", Auskan mumbles. "Nothing anyone has ever been able to verify. Maybe if it's lethal we should find an oracle and ask the dead under that "lethal" protection?" Auskan laughs at his joke and adds. "Nah. I like gold and being occupied. There's nothing better for making someone soft than living in a city for too long."

Morthil serves the soup, eyeing you warily. You can tell that despite returning to the bar, he's left one ear behind at your table. He turns to two of his staff behind the bar and nods. They immediately head out of the door into the gloom without a backwards glance. Morthil's eyes return to your table, but now he has a smirk on his lips.
Mar 17, 2017 4:43 am
OOC:
Is there any attempt at all to be discreet about this?
Mar 17, 2017 2:27 pm
Xanxus watches and stands putting the bowl to his mouth and sniffs before downing it. "Well we're not here to make friends...so if its poisoned at least it tasted decent. Lets find out what he hasn't told us from his workers..." Xanxus moves to follow the staff members hand on his hilt already.
Mar 17, 2017 10:16 pm
"I'm sure I could put the fear of Haguk in them," Haguk agrees, following Xanxus.
Mar 19, 2017 1:08 am
Shrugging Auskan follows along, and sells himself for what might be coming.
Mar 19, 2017 12:58 pm
The two staff members advance into the street, nodding to a third man, who gravitates towards them. The slip quietly into a side street a block up from the Inn. You lose sight of them as they round the corner into the alley.
Mar 19, 2017 4:32 pm
"Well I'll assume how this might go..." Xanxus mutters aloud pulling his shield from his back as the sound of metal on metal slides as he unsheathes his sword slowly as his pace quickens to the catch up to the lost query.
Mar 20, 2017 5:01 am
Blackstar finishes his soup and follows the others. "So it looks like we're being set up for an ambush or something. But we're not worried, are we?"

"Ambush means we can leave them twitching on the ground and possibly dead after we get some information... plus we didn't have to pay for the Soup... Surprise." Xanxus jeers.

"We'll ambush the ambush," Haguk shrugs. He points to one of the nearby buildings. "We can climb it and come at 'em from above."
Mar 20, 2017 3:46 pm
"Death from above! Yes! I like how you gentlemen think!" Blackstar cackles, and starts softly humming a little tune.
Mar 20, 2017 11:29 pm
SelectiveAmnesia says:

OOC:
I'd accept a Dex skill check + any relevant background modifiers from anyone who wanted to try this.
Mar 21, 2017 4:13 am
"This is a good plan, but rather than climb, I will wait here with my bow. Send them out and they'll run face first into my arrows," says Auskan pulling out his bow and knocking an arrow.
Mar 21, 2017 12:48 pm
"You know this area better than us, is that a deadend? If they don't want to fight it's more likely they'll run away from us rather than through though if they have the option of the other way out..."
Mar 21, 2017 1:52 pm
Remnant says:
"You know this area better than us, is that a deadend? If they don't want to fight it's more likely they'll run away from us rather than through though if they have the option of the other way out..."
OOC:
Auskan knows this area and knows that is a dead end. It ends at a wall with a neighbouring property.
As you stand deciding what to do, you hear a man cry for help from the alleyway.
Mar 21, 2017 2:58 pm
"Either way someone is getting hacked up in the next few minutes." Xanxus states with a shrug hoisting his shield and sword and moving into the alleyway.
OOC:
IF a battle starts we're all at +4 to what you roll for initiative.

As you step into the alleyway, you realis that the ambush is better prepared than you think and all three thugs can strike out before any of you can respond. Auskan, Xanxus and Haguk are all targeted as they are first into the alleyway. Both Xanxus and Haguk dodge the spear thrusts aimed at them, however Auskan takes the full force.

Sorry for the delay. Weekend. Xanxus up next. Two thugs left.
Mar 27, 2017 1:15 pm

Xanxus smites the thug nearest him with consumate ease, causing a huge gash to open up in his side. He throws his head back to roar his approval then turns to see Blackstar's new magic armor, nodding his approval.
OOC:
Crits are like buses. You wait ages for one and then two come along at once.... 26 points of damage means Daudit is bloodied.

Auskan and Domitius to finish the round.
Mar 28, 2017 4:53 am
Auskan throws the bow to the side and dives into the combat, lashing out at his nearest foe with his spear.

"I'll see to it you taste your steel, even from the grave," sneers Auskan snarling from the previous attack on him.

(11) + 3 = 14

Mar 28, 2017 10:04 pm
Auskan strikes out with his spear but misses. It would appear these thugs have armour on under their clothes and the spear bounces off.
OOC:
Domitius up next.
Mar 28, 2017 10:18 pm
Domitius began chanting and upended his bag of bones. Under the force of his will, the bones pulled together into a four-legged creature with a snapping jaw and the hellwasp's stinger protruding from its forehead. It shook itself as fire erupted from its torso, wreathing it in flames. It charged at Haudit, even as black, crackling power arced overhead from its master at Daudit.
OOC:
Just a reminder, if an enemy is equal to or less than 10hp, let me know as I'll finish him off as a quick action.

Domitius and his minion overwhelm a the strongest looking thug, leaving him a bloodied pulp on the ground.
OOC:
OK, so two thugs are dead. The remaining thug is down to exactly 10hp and he's up next. Does Domitius want to finish him?
Mar 29, 2017 11:46 pm
Staring intently at the bloodied man, Domitius inhaled deeply and began to absorb the man's essence. He paused. Turning to the others, he said, "If any of you have any questions you'd like to ask this man, now would be a good time."
OOC:
If no one wants to talk to him, then Domitius will finish him off.
Mar 30, 2017 1:46 pm
"Lets see if you're the only smart one. Tell us what we want to know now or die horrifically in comparison to the others." Xanxus orders the soon to be soulless combatant.
OOC:
Let me know if you want a roll as a Merc Captain I have experience in interrogations but feeling one's soul being eaten/sucked out might speed the process along.
Mar 30, 2017 10:23 pm
Domitus gave Xanxus a wry look, "Don't you think it'd be better to ask him what we want to know before demanding an answer?" He crouched and absentmindedly scratched the skeletal minion's head. "We're here looking for a box. One we were talking about in earshot of barkeep Morthil just before he sent you away. Where were you going, and what do you know about this box?"
Mar 31, 2017 10:56 am
The thug looks nervously around him, weighing up his options for escape. Seeing that there are none, his shoulders visibly slump forwards. "I don't know about no box. Nothing specific anyway. But if there be an item that someone is seeking then there be a chance that it's magical. And if it's magical then it might just get us out of here. Morthil didn't want you finding it before he did."
Mar 31, 2017 12:57 pm
"Morthil?" asks Auskan. He looks around at the others in search of recognition of the name. "Do any of you know this name?"
Mar 31, 2017 1:05 pm
"What's he look like and where does he frequent. If you wanted out you should have fallen under out banner. Everyone else gets trampled under boot."
Mar 31, 2017 3:11 pm
Nodding at Auskan, Domitius answered, "He was the barkeep back there - the one selling the mystery mushroom soup." Turning back to the man, he asked, "And where did you think to search for this box before we did?"
Mar 31, 2017 9:04 pm
Haguk stands motionless in the background, watching the rest question the captive, giving off angry stares. He's still holding his sword ready in case of any other danger. He's watching heavily coming down from the combat high.

Rolls

Rage (Recharge on 16+) - (1d20+3)

(7) + 3 = 10

Apr 1, 2017 3:17 am
"The bartender...", Auskan asks letting the though the trail off. "I think I'd like to go and search for that conspiratorial cook. Anyone else? Shall we bring our prisoner with?"
Apr 1, 2017 2:37 pm
"He sent them ahead and we followed... either they were to slow us down or to give him a head start we need to find out where he's headed now and get ahead of him... maiming him will be a bonus though..."
Apr 1, 2017 6:26 pm
"Any ideas then? We have no idea where he-," Auskan abruptyly ends his phrase and looks over at the captive. "Where would might he be going?"
Apr 3, 2017 10:35 pm
The Thug looks smug now. I'd say Morthil gone to speak to Tord. Up at his tower. Telling him about the magic item you seek. Good luck taking him on. The tower is frightening enough never mind the man.

He spits on the ground at your feet.
Apr 4, 2017 4:48 am
"I think Tord and Morthil both smell like rotting zombie yak testicles. Why don't you tell me where they are so I can tell them that myself," shoots back Auskan before spitting on the prisoner in kind.
Apr 4, 2017 12:43 pm
"Tower just outside of town... you've outgrown your usefulness alleyrat... Eat his soul, make him a minion, sell his organs... I'm done with him." Xanxus comments kicking over the bodies to look for anything of use, if not he'll be on his way to the tower.
Apr 4, 2017 5:26 pm
"My experience, even the scary ones bleed," Haguk says, turning towards the direction of the tower (or his best approximation). "Don't care what you do with the prisoner." he tells the rest, not wanting to kill an unarmed foe himself.
Apr 5, 2017 2:06 pm
"I thought we were getting more soup?!"
Apr 5, 2017 2:22 pm
"Barkeep could give you all the soup you want in return for keeping his life maybe... if he survives." Xanxus offers darkly.
Apr 5, 2017 10:20 pm
OOC:
So what next gentlemen? Can I assume a visit to see Tord or is it back in to remonstrate with Morthil?
Apr 5, 2017 10:33 pm
OOC:
Sounds about right.
Apr 6, 2017 2:06 am
Domitius placed his hand on the man's forehead. A shimmer of energy passed from the captive and up the necromancer's arm before the man fell limp. Rising, Domitius turned to the others, "The bar is a short distance behind us. Let us see if Morthil is there, and if not, let's seek out this Tord in the yonder tower."

He opened up his bag for the minion to crawl inside, where it collapsed with a quiet rattle.
OOC:
I'm triggering Deathknell to reduce the man down to 0HP. I'm already at full health, so I won't bother with rolling for +HP.

"Agreed, and let's bring this one along."
Apr 7, 2017 2:28 pm
You drag the thug inside the Inn to confront Morthil Harker. Harker's usual space behind the bar is empty. The door to the rear cellar swings gently as if he's only just made his exit. The thug yells out "Flee Morthil, they know...." and struggles to break free. You can hear the slapping of footsteps on flagstoned steps behind the door. Harker doesn't sound like an athlete, that's for sure, big man though he may be.

You become aware of an immediate silence in the bar as the inn's patrons loom menacingly behind you, blocking your exit.
Apr 7, 2017 4:46 pm
"Well this is why I wanted to go straight to the Magi..." Xanxus spits elbowing the thug in the nose, "You lot have an unattended bar, we have the last living, for now, of Morthil's ambushing party of murdering cowards... Are you going to get drunk and party or are we going to end up brawling and possibly getting this place burnt down... if that happens we're not paying for it this time." he inquires to the crowd his face hard behind his face mask as his jaw sets hand going to his hilt.

Haguk places a hand on his sword, ready to draw. "Listen to the man, this won't be no quaint little tavern brawl. When I fight, I fight to death."
Apr 9, 2017 4:51 am
Auskan turns to a quick glance over his shoulder, and seeing the way out blocked, reaches for his weapon, asking "Is everyone in on this nonsense? What the hell is going on?"
Apr 9, 2017 1:10 pm
Domitius turned and faced the man filling the doorway. He glowered at the man, "Morthil Harker, I will only say this once. We have entered this living dungeon with a singular purpose, and believe me, we will achieve that purpose. It is up to you whether you benefit from our presence or get in the way and be so easily slain like your lackeys." He shook the man for good measure, "I am inclined to help those who help us, but woe those who rise up against me. What say you? Shall the No Escape Inn will be placed under new management?"

OOC:
I'm confused. two things:
1) We had killed all the men in the alley, so how was Morthil warned?
2) In your last post, it sounded like the inn's patron (Morthil Harkness) had ran up to the doorway and thereby blocked our exit. Now it sounds like he has escaped down the cellar and we're wasting our breath yelling at him. Could you clarify what's going on in the scene?
Apr 11, 2017 2:13 am
OOC:
I think he assumed you didn't kill the survivor we got info from, Morthil definitely wouldn't come towards us if we just killed the ambushers so I figure the barkeep bailed out the back or another exit, everyone in the bar is showing solidarity now, meta the story about the wizard might be a goose chase if he's running this way, stone on stone sliding might be a secret area or something, shrugs.
Xanxus raised an eyebrow at the throng surrounded them. Although he didn't mind needless bloodshed they didn't have time and most people after the fact didn't like being killed, once the carnage started and leaned either way it wouldn't stop until one side was dead or gave up or lost their will to fight. As a Commander and Mercenary Captain Xanxus had experience resolving things without everything resolving itself in a battle...

"Back!" shouts Auskan at the crowd. "This scum, and his associates tried to kill us. We seek Mohrthil, and the coward." Even though they don't appear hostile yet, it's clear that they're all at th every least an obstacle. The prisoner has also clearly out lived his usefulness, but to kill him here, bound and in front of all these people would surely attract unwanted attention...

You assumed correctly. I've missed a post somewhere. My view of what happened is that you dragged the survivor back in to the Inn to confront Morthil. As you get into the Inn he shouts "Flee Morthil" and Harker bolts down the cellar stairs. If you are all happy with that then we can continue. Apologies if I missed a post. Easy done I suppose but I should be more careful.

The kitchen is full of all of the kind of things you'd expect from a quality inn but there are a significant volume of mushrooms. More mushrooms than you've seen in storage before anywhere in your life.
OOC:
To clarify, the kitchen and the rear cellar are not the same place. Blackstar won't have seen Harker flee. It's now been about 3 minutes since Harker fled and you heard the sound of stone grating on stone. He's getting away.

Apr 18, 2017 2:00 pm
As you head out of the back of the bar area, the path to the back cellar is clear. A hatch sits at an angle in the wall and it has been flung open with some force. Beyond it is a flight of stone slabbed stairs down into the cellar. You can see down into the cellar and it is filled with the kind of things you'd expect an Inn cellar to be filled with. Wine bottles, ale barrels and a number of empty crates. Intriguingly though, there is a paving slab in the cellar floor which has been lifter out of position and placed on it's nearest neighbour, leaving a small 5ft square black opening, from which a rope ladder appears to descend.
OOC:
Auskan - make your roll. And I am being generous :)

Haguk picks up the first bottle he can find, he looks at the label before opening it with his teeth. After taking a big sip he smiles,
"Good vintage, a strong flavor of potato spirits. I approve."
Apr 20, 2017 9:53 am
Auskan can hear little in the immediate vicinity of the entrance, however he can just about hear the panting exertions of a fast running, slightly overweight man fading into the distance with every second.
Apr 20, 2017 12:28 pm
"I think that pudgy bastard is getting away, but I don't think he's got anyone with him," he says to the group. As he heads down the stairs he shouts back over his shoulder, "grab me a bottle of something with some kick."
Apr 20, 2017 1:42 pm
"Got it, I go for the high proof myself, you never know when you'll need to set something or someone on fire..." Xanxus mused stowing a few bottles in his bag. With that he'll go to the opening and toss down a bit of stones or refuse and wait for the sound of it hitting the bottom, if it's a long way down he'll stow his weapon and shield for the trip down. "Now lets hunt some bartender..." Xanus states with a mischievous look on his face before checking the ladder and heads down.
Apr 20, 2017 3:27 pm
His outh full of mushrooms, Blackstar pops his head out of the kitchen. "What's going on?"

Apr 20, 2017 4:23 pm
"Sounds like fun!" Blackstar says, and follows after Haguk. "Who's IT?"
Apr 20, 2017 4:27 pm
"Guy who set up the ambush on us." Xanxus mutters shaking his head. Once down he'll pull his sword and shield and check around at the light situation.
Apr 21, 2017 4:07 am
Domitius descended into the cellar and stared down into the blackness of the pit beneath. Pulling his minion's bones from the bag, he let them clatter below where they formed up into a short humanoid figure. The head erupted into flame, casting the darkness away.

"I can't imagine Morthil could have set any traps in his haste, but if there are any, those bones should trigger them for us." Domitius climbed down the rope ladder and took a look around.

The passageway ahead quickly opens out into a hollowed out cavern before narrowing to another passageway. The cavern floor is soft mud and the trail of footprints from the cavern edge where you stand leads to a prone and cowering Morthil Harker who is pleading for mercy. However, you seem to be the least of his concerns as he is lying at the feet of four fairly bulky Drow, who appear to have emerged from the opposite passageway and immediately encountered Harker. He turns to you with begging eyes. "Help me for goodness sake. Don't leave me to these spawn of the earth!".

The frontmost Drow looks at Harker then at you. "It appears we have a common prey. We can either fight over him or we can cut him in half and each take our share. We'd prefer the top half if that's ok with you."
May 2, 2017 2:29 pm
Xanxus puts up a hand to calm the other silverfolk and snares at the remark about the spawn of the earth behind his facemask. He looks from the drow to Domitius with his own violet eyes and raises a white haired eyebrow... Did this man really just say that?

"Domitius with the dark magi arts could you get half a head to talk if he's dead? Maybe we can just split him down the middle..." he asks his compatriot quietly and quickly.
May 3, 2017 2:11 am
Domitius was momentarily caught off guard by the sudden appearance of fellow drow, but he nodded at them while leaning closer to Xanxus, whispering, "I might be able to garner a few answers from half a head, but it would make things considerably easier if we didn't have to resort to that. Men are usually more cooperative than spirits."

He took a step forward, pointedly ignoring the whimpering man at their feet, "Greetings, brothers. I see no need to fight over our quarry. Our interest in him is simply in some questions. Perhaps we could get our answers then let you have your way with him?"

Seeing as I just rolled a couple 6s on my Icon dice, could I leverage one of those to get us the info we want (namely directions to where the box might be found)? I'm not overly familiar with the Nocturne Icons, so I'm not sure if it'd be better to use my negative relationship with Count Federmir or my positive relationship with Von Halzinger (seeing as they're enemies of each other, using the 6 might end up being the same either way)

Auskan surveys the scene before him, the prostrate figure of their quarry, the drow attempting to negotiate with one another. "I feel like there's an element I'm missing here...," he thinks to himself. "There's abeen a lot of fighting since I met them, and very little progress, now this..."

One of the things I enjoy about 13th Age is the background behind the bauble or widget that a player describes they use to solve a problem/issue/obstacle through a bond when a 5 or 6 is rolled to expand on the background between them and the Icon and it explains a bit why they're favored by them. Which ever one you use I think would be thematic flavor I figure.

I'm good with that. Let's go with Von Halzinger.
The lead drow looks at Domitius, surprised to find one of his own people chasing a barman down a tunnel.

"I don't think you really seek the barman, and we definitely do not seek you. I think I know what you seek. This tunnel extends for about 1 mile north of here where it exits into a tower. I suspect that the item you seek is at the top of that tower, as all things valuable seem to be. Now if you will excuse us we have business with this errm 'Gentleman'."

Sorry, this is going slower than I'd like. Work and life.
May 5, 2017 12:57 pm
Xanxus nods and thanks the group in their native tongue.

"Those spawns of the earth have more honor and pride in their shite then your meager body will ever possess..." Xanxus states pulling down his face mask to reveal why it was an insult. "It is a good day though for the weak and worthless to die." he adds with a poisonous smile before pulling his face mask back up.

With that he's on his way.

I guess I definitely don't have to pay him back for this alcohol now... Xanxus thinks to himself.
May 5, 2017 5:28 pm
Auskan stares down the drow for a moment, and considers fighting for the right to interrogate the prisoner, but decides against it. "I hope we don't meet again, you or the fat bastard you're claiming," he says as he leaves the room. "Fucking elves..."
May 8, 2017 1:48 pm
The drow grab Harker by the collar and start dragging him in the direction from whence you came. "I think we need some soup and a long chat. Or a short bloody chat. Either suits us."

As they recede from sight, you set off up the tunnel. The tunnel continues for about a mile before ending at a set of vertical iron ladders, leading straight up to a metal trapdoor. From beyond the trapdoor you can hear the sound of multiple things moving slowly across the floor. Whatever it is has either very hard boots on or very bony feet.
May 8, 2017 5:36 pm
"I hope those footsteps mean trouble!" Blackstar says gleefully.
May 8, 2017 6:42 pm
"Only one way to figure out," Haguk says moving purposefully towards the trapdoor to see what waits beyond.
May 9, 2017 1:00 am
Domitius watched them depart thoughtfully, a part of him wondering what his brethren were doing in this living dungeon. But then he looked to Xanxus and realized that they were probably doing what the dark elves in their own party were doing. Searching for answers and riches.

Stepping up behind Haguk, Domitius whispered, "I'll open the door, you clear a path for us."
OOC:
I'll use Mage Hand to open the door from a short distance away.
May 10, 2017 4:24 am
Auskan sets an arrow to his bow, after loosening the ties on his sword. "Best be ready for whatever happens now...," he thinks to himself as the others turn their attention to the trap door.
May 10, 2017 10:30 pm
As the trap door opens, not without a considerable squeal, the footsteps above stop. You find yourself looking into a 5 foot square black hole as the room above seems to be in total darkness and now curiously still. Nothing approaches the opening. You'd almost swear that the tunnel your standing in got dimmer. Like the room above swallowed some of the light.

Using my 6 with The Wolflord to alter the situation. Let me know if you think it's a bit much.
Xanxus stops and sniffs the air a few times audibly and pulls down his face mask and inhales deeply.

Tabaco and Cocoa... of all the places to see this fellow again Xanxus thinks with a snort and shakes his head.

Xanxus snares and calls out.

"Fearghal the Dark Butcher? Fearghal Mac Maol Dáire? What's a cheeky bastard like you doing in a place like this besides in it for the coin? Don't go up, since he's had to put out his cigar he's likely to try and cleave anyone chopping their head off with his glaive out of annoyance and spit. Probably dried up the hinge on the door purposely. Man loves himself a good cigar and easy coin to be had." he asks in a loud whisper over the silence before warning the rest.
[ +- ] Fearghal's Background with Xanxus
May 15, 2017 10:19 pm
There is an almost pregnant pause after Xanxus speaks. Nothing moves, not even a sound beyond the dark opening. And then a spinning silver coin flies trough the hatch and ends spinning on the floor. As it settles you can see that one side has a wolf motif while the flip side has a single letter in relief. The letter F.

A voice hisses from above. "Xanxussss? Isssss thaaaaat youssssss?"
May 16, 2017 2:07 am
As the conversation starts, Auskan gives Xanxus a narrow-eyed stare. "Wait, what you know this thing?"
May 16, 2017 12:39 pm
"It is me. Fancy a drink over my decapitation and a bit of a chat over why a Magi has you in his basement or dungeon?" Xanxus inquires with the realization his mannerisms and speech give him away even through the darkness and he inches over to flick the coin towards him with the tip of his sword and inspects it. He pulls the alcohol he swiped from before and gives his a loud shake to let Fearghal know he was not hostile.

"I wouldn't call him a 'thing' to his face. If he drops his weapon he'll just as easily pick you up by the leg to beat us with you... If he had a different outcome from his past he'd possibly be in fine clothes drinking wine and being bored while smoking cigars but it wasn't so the beast within so to speak is something he chooses to feed with aggression and he's quite good at it." he warns in hushed tones to Auskan.
May 17, 2017 1:36 am
"Yeah, sure," says Auskan with a shrug. Auskan makes a mental note of the wolf motif on the coin, and considers his own affiliations. He decides its best to let old "friends" get reacquainted. While the conversation is going on, Auskan pokes around a bit, and begins re-tracing his steps a bit. Yes. Add any backgrounds you think are relevant.
May 18, 2017 10:15 pm
As you stand there, a black amorphous shape falls through the hatch above and sprawls, almost flat like some kind of thick, black silk cape on the floor. The it rises up, filling out to be the shape of a large caped man, 6'5" if he's an inch. His face is hooded and can't be discerned but simply looking into the gaping maw where a face should be is enough to leave you feeling like your soul is being tugged out through your eyes.

"No Mage keeps me in his basement. I seek not obey."

He turns to Xanxus. "You still disemboweling them the old way I hope?"

Xanxus inspects the coin and realizes it is who he thinks it was. Offering up a bottle of something swiped that looked expensive he uncorks and hands it to the larger man with a nod.

"Only in the agony and horror, the same entry cut but instead of pulling them out slowly with metal hooks flesh eating scarabs is the new 'thing'... they rarely have anything to say afterwards but all their fellow prisoners are chatter boxes afterwards. Resorted to dumping them into iron coffins. Scarabs are easier to wrangle that way..." he admits with a shaking of his head.

"So what does Fearghal the Dark Butcher seek in this place? It's not the worst but it's not the best... Besides a light maybe." Xanxus inquires finding a flint to offer if Fearghal wanted to smoke another cigar.

Auskan hears nothing that would alert him to the presence of others. The Drow seem to have headed on their way and the denizens of the bar seem to be little keen on following the innkeep into the dark unknown.

Fearghal tilts his black maw of a face towards you. "I came to kill him, no mistake. The Dungeon wants the wizard dead. But I've been stalking him for days. Not many mortal men impress me, but he's got an entire library full of skeleton librarians. You've got to respect that."

"So why do you seek him. I'm not sure I want him dying now I sort of know him. I hope we ain't gonna disagree on this one?"
May 24, 2017 12:20 pm
"To be frank the Dungeon has something we need for a job, wizard's the best bet at finding it I hear. Innkeeper tried to distract and kill us with an amateur group of ambushers while running to the wizard's tower he told us of through tunnels... now that I think about it do you know what the wizard looks like? It'd be a pisser if he turned out to be a middle aged balding bloke moon lighting as a tavern owner/barkeep and mushroom soup chef..."
