OOC and General Game Discussion...

May 6, 2017 5:06 pm
I'm putting this thread here because I enjoy talking about game play, rules-and-shit, and other things, but I don't like that stuff in my actual gaming thread. So I stole something that MaitlandJones said OOC in the game thread and moved it here...
MaitlandJones says:
Thanks for the roll GM. Pardon guys, still learning the rules as I go. I will try to be timely in my replies to the forum.
I never need you to apologize for being new to the game. I've only played this game three times in my life, but I'm old and I've been gaming in general since 1977-78, so picking up new rules is easy for me.

All you really need to concern yourself with, as far as I'm concerned, is that you get to know who Pon is and you share him with us in the game... So far, you're doing an excellent job at that from what I see.

If you have any questions, I stand ready help in any way that turns you on.

Alastor04, I submitted a character sheet matching the one you provided for Dao Jodh with his profile pic if you wouldn't mind accepting it :)
May 7, 2017 6:10 pm
Question: how much do our characters know about the force? If this Cerean is talking about "the Dark Side" of the Force, does that mean anything to us?
May 7, 2017 6:15 pm
I would assume Hethan Romund passed on a basic history of Force users to you guys so you would likely know Light Side, Dark Side, Jedi and Sith and that there are other Force Traditions. This knowledge would be more of the academic variety as far as experiencing the Force you know which ever Force power your character starts with but little else.

Regarding that roll, my RL gaming group has homebrewed that a complete wash with a triumph counts as a success. Basically the "success" part of the triumph cancels out the failure, then you use the triumph as an extra success.
May 7, 2017 10:43 pm
Right the triumph does cancel the failure even with rules as written. So Im just letting you succeed.

What would Star Wars be if heroes didn't continually do stupid things that seemed to work out just fine...

I mean, really...

That is one benefit of this system is crazier ideas can get a lucky roll and good ideas can turn the situation to utter chaos.
May 8, 2017 3:59 pm
Also, are we using destiny points? Or are they not part of the beginner adventures?
May 8, 2017 4:08 pm
We will roll for them in a bit. The beginner game slowly adds ideas. Next is

After this game we I may try to run Chronicles of the Gatekeeper if you guys are interested.

Sounds fun... with these characters, or will we get to build our own?
May 8, 2017 7:08 pm
Either way I am definitely interested in continuing on!
May 8, 2017 7:17 pm
You will get to build your own.

Did i do something wrong with my avatar?

Everyone has one but me...
May 8, 2017 10:02 pm
lol, did you submit a character sheet with an avatar uploaded?
May 8, 2017 10:05 pm
Yeah, about three minutes after Alastor04 told you you could do that.

But i'm new enough to this message board software that i don't know if my avatar is correct

Hmm, I don't know if there is a way to do it incorrectly. The only other thing to do would be when you are posting there is a drop down menu right above the text box where you can select posting as "player" or as "insert character name"
May 8, 2017 11:20 pm
That would be where I'm screwing up

Thanks for the lesson!

Are we rolling initiative, are the bad guys shooting at us with big, scary guns... what's up?
May 9, 2017 6:30 pm
OOC:
Holy smokes, I probably should have them act. My apologies.
May 9, 2017 7:47 pm
Ok, so I want to fire again, what dice am I adding for the hunter's cover? And who's taking Pon's Boost die?

Does it matter who goes first?
May 9, 2017 8:12 pm
Initiative is not set in this game. Say players have slots 1-3 any of the players can act on those slots but only once. So if you want to go now you can and Pon's boost die goes to next allied attack (whoever that is). Difficulty to attack the hunter behind cover would be 2 purple for medium range and one black for cover.
May 9, 2017 9:09 pm
Cool... I tried to post an attack action, but it appears there's a limit to the number of dice that can be put into a single roll.

How about if we roll in the OOC thread... good dice on one post, bad dice in a second post, then combine them in the Game thread so that there's not a lot of clutter there?

Edit: Or is there not a limit and you just can't see them going in? I'll test that here:

Rolls

test of lots of dice

1 Success, 5 Advantage, 3 Failure, 2 Threat

Total: 2 Failure, 3 Advantage

May 9, 2017 9:12 pm
Ok, it's just a limit on visibility... The roll comes out as it was put in...
May 9, 2017 9:49 pm
Hey Keith, I hope that was okay swiping one of your advantages. Not sure of the etiquette for this over PbP, but it seemed okay to just do it instead of asking for permission then waiting for you to respond and hanging the game up.
May 9, 2017 9:54 pm
I'm so good with you profiting from my existence!

Isn't that what a team does?
May 10, 2017 4:55 pm
I personally do not like the Force Die mechanic for this system. It is probably the biggest issue I have with it. What do you guys think of it?
May 10, 2017 6:19 pm
Alastor04 says:

I like it... roll the dice, if you get nothing, you can't do it, if you get light side you can do what you want just fine, if you only get black, you can do what you want, but it'll cost you...

For me, this is a lot like interpreting Advantages and Threats when they show up. It makes for interesting storytelling.

The characters I like to play take a long time getting to a Force Rating of 2, which makes things a lot easier, But that's a price I pay for the way I build my characters.

What's your issue with it?
May 10, 2017 6:24 pm
Well I guess my issue is more that raising your Force Rating takes a while. I've only played with it a little so I could be wrong but my players often roll only dark side pips and don't want to use them. Was my explanation of them okay?
May 10, 2017 7:38 pm
I haven't actually used the Force mechanics yet, only EotE. I suppose it's alright in theory over a long period of time. I guess I don't like how you can use the Dark Side of the Force a few times and still have a decent shot at gaining Morality, that doesn't really make sense to me.
May 11, 2017 2:09 am
Dark Side powers and evil acts generate a lot more conflict than using the odd dark side pip. Thinking about it more i think it is more just a way to keep people from relying on the force for everything which was canon.

You've successfully made it through part 1, once everyone has spent their XP (see PM) we will continue.
May 11, 2017 11:37 am
Okay, Dao Jodh is all healed up and I spent his 10XP to gain rank 1 in melee combat.
May 12, 2017 2:37 am
I apologize but we have some plans this weekend that may have me busier than usual. If it is ok we will restart monday?
May 12, 2017 12:37 pm
No worries on my end, have a great weekend!
May 12, 2017 7:15 pm
Enjoy your weekend! See you on Monday
May 15, 2017 12:59 pm
Hope you all had a good weekend! My wife and I invited my family over for the weekend so we had to clean the house and I got a raspberry pi and built a retropie (classic gaming console).
May 15, 2017 2:42 pm
Awesome! I sent my wife to a self-help retreat in a remote part of Canadia and spent the weekend writing scripts, computer code (iOS with Swift), and setting up a gaming adventure that I'm running in a few weeks (pathfinder... running 4 8th-Level PCs against 1000 or so orcs and maybe 2000 goblins... in an epic battle of attrition).
May 15, 2017 2:44 pm
I've never played Pathfinder but looked over the books. While I like the concept and the art, D&D 5e rules seem more my speed.
May 15, 2017 2:55 pm
Yeah, Pathfinder is needlessly complex, but it's the rules set my group uses.

I'm not a fan of 5e for no other reason than I'm old and I prefer 1e's unfair-but-balanced rules.
May 15, 2017 2:57 pm
I haven't really seen any rules before 3.5e. I was introduced to roleplaying with Star Wars Revised Core Rulebook and even then I just had the book no actual play. I thought the idea of making my own star wars character was awesome though.
May 15, 2017 3:07 pm
well, I'll just say that 1st Edition AD&D is significantly different from all the d20 variants. It has no eye toward fairness or equality between the Classes and is set up in a complex-but-rules-light way.

You all are doing well. I'm going to give Dao one more day to return before proceeding.
Jun 1, 2017 6:13 pm
Would you guys be interested in playing Star Wars Saga Edition (the d20 game)?
Jun 3, 2017 9:32 pm
Nevermind, I got new Star Wars FFG book and have so many ideas I can't wait to get to them.
