Chapter 1: Welcome to Paxectel Island

May 18, 2015 4:07 pm
You wake in the morning, revitalized and refreshed. The inn keeper prepares you a warm breakfast with a side of their house-brewed cider (a very popular and refreshing drink amongst the locals). You discuss the events of the night before and eventually resolve to head out and start your investigation. There is disagreement amongst you over which avenue of research will be the most productive, but you all agree that leaving the inn is a first and necessary step.

As you step through the door a wave of electricity breaks upon you. A strange shimmering fills your vision, as though looking at the world through the heat of a flame. Stepping forward, the road, grass and even the inn begin to fade. Your vision blurs around the edges and everything around becomes less real. You hear the crashing sound of the surf, and smell the sharp tang of the sea. You feel the warmth of the sun, and through the mists you see a bright orb overhead.

As your vision clears, you find the inn and countryside are no longer present. What stretches before you is a strange island with ruined structures dotting the landscape. The sun shines upon you from a cloudless sky, and from its position you would guess it to be midday.

Looking around, you first notice that you've stepped forth from a strange portal of swirling and conflicting colours, onto a large stone dias raised a few feet above the ground. The portal is on the edge of a small island that is several hundred feet across and nearly a thousand feet from the northern shore to southern coastline. Surrounded by water on all sides, the sea continues from the island for perhaps a mile in all directions, where it ends in violent storms that threaten to tear even the sturdiest of ships asunder. Ruins dot the landscape, an obvious sign that the place has seen better times.

Everyone is standing beside you on the dias... except Tiana.

((OOC: Island Map, you are at "A"))
May 18, 2015 4:29 pm
"Damn...I knew I should have summoned Z first thing this morning! I really should follow my intuition more often." she reaches into the folds of her robe and produces a scroll case. With a flourish she unfurls a lamb skin parchment with many arcane symbols drawn upon it in gold and silver inks. She places her elaborate ring in the center of the largest sigil and intones a spell. The ring begins to hover about a foot above the ground and spins slowly. "Please friends, a moment more is all I need." The ring begins spewing lavender and white smoke as it spins and the form of Ziesra begins to take shape.

((Ooc...this ritual takes a full minute. Singer places Ziesra in the ring to keep from disturbing the non-adventurers because she is Large and monstrous. I will post a link to her image soon.))
May 18, 2015 4:35 pm
Vorfix looks around, lost in wonder. He pulls out his small notepad and starts jotting notes as he runs around to various things in the near vicinity. "Oh, this is quite interesting. I wonder if..." he sputters as he dashes off to the next object. He finally catches up with his surroundings as he gives one last broad look around himself. "Where... are we?"
May 18, 2015 8:51 pm
"Did that portal just appear? Or was the inn an illusion and we've been here all along?"
May 18, 2015 8:55 pm
Almost immediately after asking aloud, the answer to her question leaps to the front of Aenwyn's mind. There was no portal there originally and the inn definitely wasn't an illusion. Something dragged them all here. The magic energies flowing around the portal behind them suggest to her that they had just been forced through it. But what forced had given them the metaphysical push necessary she didn't know.
May 19, 2015 12:33 am
What in the world...?! Elandra thinks, as she looks around herself and at her companions, eyes wide with shock. "That's it. I'm laying off the wine," she says blearily. "I'm assuming everyone else is just as lost as to where we are?"
May 19, 2015 4:53 am
"Lost, and we're missing Tiana too. Something pulled us here, and I'd guess intelligent."
May 19, 2015 5:43 pm
As soon as Dimal regains his footing he reaches over to calm crusher who seems more put upon than upset with his new surroundings. Dimal thinks to himself Now I'm not so angry that Crusher was taunting that pompous race horse in the stables. I wouldn't have brought him inside for breakfast otherwise.

"Well, wasn't that a jolly romp. Maybe I shouldn't have ordered that bottle last night." Dimal rubs his temples and looks around at their new surroundings trying to identify anything that might spark some recognition as to their new whereabouts.

Dimal recognizes nothing. This is not a place he has been before, nor has he seen it in paintings or images. The brings to his mind the immediate hypothesis that they were now on another plane. After all, that sensation of being dragged through the portal was not unlike a rather ungentle dimensional door.
May 19, 2015 6:30 pm
Elandra loosens the strap on her shield, shouldering her pack in such a way that she can drop the heavy backpack and draw her shield with one or two smooth movements, her hands moving with deft familiarity. Her left hand rests on the handle of her hammer as she continues to look around, surveying the area around the group.

"Once everyone is done with preparations, we should start moving. If something intelligent pulled us here then it likely knows how to find this place. If it's intentions weren't benign in bringing us here I don't want it finding us."

This is not a plane you could hope to recognize, a fact you quickly come to appreciate. It's not so much a plane as it is a pocket dimension. It is probably not much bigger than the island itself.
May 22, 2015 3:07 am
With a flash of light the Large Ziesra appears twirling and coiling in the air. "Where'd you drag us now Singer? This place smells funny. Is there anything to eat?" The half-elf woman gathers her summoning tools and places her ring back on her finger. "I didn't do anything. I hate that you always imply that I've gotten us into danger. Its rarely my...well...it's not my fault this time."

Addressing Dimal and his question, she says, "To the ruins, I should think. There we are most likely to find a clue as to where we are and why WD are here.

At Singer's suggestion, once you are each prepared, you head towards the ruins at the center of the island. The ruins are of what was once surely a great cathedral (D), now only two walls stand along with a portion of the third. The floor is covered in the shattered remains of what were probably beautiful and vibrant murals. There are also strange skeletons scattered about, as if a great battle had occurred here. You can see that in front of the ruined cathedral is a very large shrine (C), reaching almost 20 feet into the air. It is carved as a representation of the Lady Trinity and her three aspects: Charity, Faith and Hope.
May 27, 2015 3:37 pm
Elandra walks a few paces ahead of the group, her eyes darting warily around the area, looking for signs of trouble. Her shield is strapped securely to her right arm, and her warhammer is gripped firmly in her left. As she enters the ruins, she stops at the first group of skeletons and stoops down to examine them, looking for signs of age, what might have killed them, and whether or not they're human.

"Such a strange battlefield. Usually corpses aren't left to rot and decay to this level after a battle of this size. I wonder if both armies perished in the battle or there were so few survivors that they couldn't properly care for their fallen comrades. It's situations like these that make for great ballads... Mainly because I can fill in all the details myself." Dimal smirks as he finishes. But his light-hearted banter is somewhat betrayed by his readying of his slingstaff and loosening of the two daggers at his waist. The bullet that he loads into the sling seems to glow with some inner fire.

After Dimal finishes readying his weapons he starts to hum a merry tune that is meant to inspire and fortify his companions.

While examining the skeletons Elandra notices something out of the corner of her eye. Just by the edge of the cathedral ruins, the crumbled wall appears to conceal something. A closer look reveals a secret door built into the cobblestones beside a collapsed portion of the wall. The skeletons, however, are uninformative.

((There's more, except I can't find the tables I need to roll on to tell you what more you found... grrr))
May 28, 2015 6:07 pm
((I guess we can always handle that part when you've got the tables handy.))

Elandra raises her warhammer and points it at the secret door. She speaks softly, without looking over her shoulder,"I've found something. Concealed passage, maybe." She walks warily toward the door, beckoning the others to assemble behind her, and then opens the door, her hammer and shield at the ready.
May 31, 2015 2:11 pm
"Yes open let us see what was concealed by man, but revealed so kindly by time. But I think there may be more to find up here. Let us evaluate this door; but if it leads deep within the structure, as these things usually do, I feel we should finish observing what the surface has to offer."

With that Z comes to hover near Elandra, ready to rush forward should danger present itself. Singer comes near but stays a few paces back, as her skills warrant.

Opening the door Elandra hears a loud click. Too late to move out of the way, she sees a thick cloud of green smoke billow out from the door frame. Herself, Z, Singer and Aenwyn are caught up in the gas cloud. They cough and sputter as the cloud clears, and once it is gone they see that the door leads to a narrow staircase that leads to what is presumably a crypt below the ruins of the temple.

Stupid, stupid, STUPID! Elandra thinks angrily, as she tries to hold her breath and bear through the poisonous cloud. A year reading books at the estate and you've gone soft. As the gas clears, she looks around at the others and says, her tone and expression sheepish, "Err, perhaps someone with a better eye for traps should take the lead going forward.

Singer briefly begins to feel exhausted, but a minute later the feeling passes. No one seems to be affected by the smoke, which has by now fully dissipated. Before you is the open door, a narrow staircase descending into the crypt below the ruined church.
Jun 5, 2015 3:31 pm
Dimal dismounts and pats crusher on the head. "Looks like we are going underground again boy. Crusher and I can lead, unless someone else feels they could spot traps or ambushes better than I" As he is talking Dimal checks the straps on Crushers armor as well a his own, he once again check that his weapons are loose in their scabbards.
Jun 6, 2015 2:08 am
"As I...*cough* said before, I am more than willing to head underground, but perhaps we should see what else this island has to tell us on its surface. Besides...it looks like Ziesra will have to squeeze to get down there. No reason to rush into that kind of situation. There are at least two other structures and a statue over there."

"Your absolutely right Singer. No need to go rushing head long into the dark when we can see what trouble we can get ourselves into in the light of day. Though I have a feeling that whatever is down this passageway is going to be quite intriguing. What say you Aenwyn, Elandra and Vorfix?"
Jun 9, 2015 7:47 pm
Obviously still a little flustered, Elandra simply nods.

"Lets stay to the path and work our way toward that fountain south of us. I think we should be able to move to the buildings from there fairly easily."
Jun 12, 2015 4:10 pm
After having silently been following around, seeing his environment, Vorfix finally speaks up. [b]"I think we should look around as much as we can before we delve too deep. Information is always the key to success![b]".

Having decided on a path, the group proceeds to the shrine in front of the ruined cathedral. As you proceed through the ruins of the cathedral, doing around piles of rubble and ducking under half-collapsed archways, Elandra stumbles over a stone, kicking it aside and revealing a trinket of some sort. Bending, she identifies it as a charm, a little bronze flame that was likely once strung on a pendant. A charm worn by those who worshipped the Fire Goddess of old. She takes it, and upon picking it up senses its magical properties.

It is a beautiful stone statue, about 18 feet high and 6 feet wide. The face is carved as a near-life representation of the Lady Trinity and her three faces, Charity, Faith and Hope.

As you approach the shrine, you all feel a bit refreshed, elated and as if you are somehow wiser than you were before. You notice something at the foot of the statue. A small moonstone bead, not unlike the ones from the necklace that shattered back in the inn.

Elandra finds Mabharo's God of Fire. It is a small token which can be activated to cast Fire Shield. It has one use.

You all have the Blessing of Fortune - You may use it at any time to reroll a single ability check, attack roll, saving throw or skill check, taking the better result. The Blessing may be used once.
Jun 17, 2015 8:11 pm
Pocketing the charm, Elandra carefully walks over to the bead, looking around for signs of tripwires or pressure plates that would set off yet another trap. If satisfied, she bends down to pick up the little moonstone bead, rolling it through her fingers. "Well, doesn't this look familiar..." she says, looking around at the others.

Elendra sees no reason to proceed with caution and picks up the bead. It is exactly as she thought it was, a little moonstone bead. She gets the sense that it, like the token she found in the ruins, possesses some limited magical power. Although precisely what she isn't sure.

"Ziesra, plaese do a fly-over and tell us what you see."

Singer continues to look around the desolate island and waits for Ziesra to return with her information. Ziesra flies up to a height of 40 feet and begins making flying a serpentine pattern that extends outward 40ft East & West and progresses south as the party moves. Primarily looking for signs of life and threats, but also anything of interest.

Keep your eyes, ears and any other perceptions you might have open and lets see what this place has to offer." With a bold gesture Dimal points himself and crusher toward the nearest structure and looks to see if any of his companions has another opinion on what to do.

Jul 1, 2015 3:18 pm
Zisera returns with a report. There is a small campsite to the south of the portal (B), all along the coast (F through H) are signs of an ancient battle, and there are several buildings and ruins to the south of the chapel.

Aenwyn detects a faint aura coming from the entire island. The signature of the aura is strange to her, a kind of ancient and powerful magics she has never before encounter.

Following Dimal, the group heads due south (towards building I). The first building they reach (I) is heavily damaged and several trees have fallen on the roof. It looks like it used to be an armoury, although the interior is bare of anything useful. The only remnants that indicate a purpose are the shelves and and stone racks designed to hold weapons and armour. Pressing along (towards J) the group finds a copse filled with trees and rocks big enough to climb over. There is a shrine here with symbols indicating a deity forgotten by time. The final building in this group (K) looks like it used to be a barracks. It too is in disrepair and several trees have crashed through the ceiling.

Continuing to explore, the group moves along the path (towards O/N, from around behind I) across the yellow grassy field they see a stream leading into a cave of some sort. The cave is over twenty feet high and extends into deep darkness several dozen feet back. The air is surprisingly cool, the walls smooth and the dirt floor umarred by footprints. You can hear muffled voices coming from the depths, and straining it sounds like it may be the voices of those who were in the inn the night before. Standing at the edge you see a narrow staircase descending into the black depths. The sense of magical energy grows stronger as you stand at the top of the stairs.
Jul 2, 2015 2:26 am
Singer lowers her voice and turns her back to the cave so it won't carry to those below, "OK, so I know I said that we should finished above ground until we were sure about what was up here, BUT, this I think warrants some investigation. I think we should check that out."
Jul 2, 2015 7:52 pm
"I think you're right - that sounds like the pub, so this might have answers for us," Aenwyn says in an undertone. "The magic is strongest right here."
Jul 9, 2015 3:35 pm
In hushed tones "Agreed, we definitely need answers for where we are and why we were transported to this island. Shall I try scrying again to eavesdrop on their clandestine conversation?" Dimal pulls out his silver flute and waves it back and forth suggestively.
Jul 9, 2015 3:47 pm
"Is anyone here stealthy enough to make it down? That is an option as well. And if that's the case, we'd best be ready to save that unfortunate soul," Vorfix says with a slight smile.
Jul 9, 2015 5:44 pm
"I can go unnoticed if I choose to but thought a less life imperiling tactic might have been the place to start. Though I am more than willing to insert myself into the conversation if there is a reason for it."
Jul 9, 2015 9:46 pm
"I could make Z invisible and she could fly down there unseen. If trouble starts I can recall her."
Jul 10, 2015 3:20 am
"I'm not one for shadowy action," Elandra whispers, taking furtive, wary glances around the area. "But yes, perhaps the scrying spell might be a good place to start, and we can send someone in discretely if that fails."
Jul 10, 2015 1:40 pm
"Yes, Final try your spell first."
Jul 14, 2015 2:50 pm
"Excellent, let us move a small distance away from the entrance to not be as conspicuous." Dimal says quietly as he gestures around the mouth of the cave. Assuming his companions will follow he quietly moves to the south side of the mouth of the cave far enough to be sure that no noise will carry down the mouth. He looks around for a comfortable spot muttering to himself.

"I guess this will do as well as any." and with that Dimal sits down on a somewhat flat stone and starts to play a similar hauntingly etheric tune as last night in the inn.

((use one charge of Scrying on his flute. The target is the group of recognized voices at the bottom of the cave. Modifier would be +5 since I recognize the voices but don't actually know the target))

Dimal's vision blurs in the familiar way and he sees the patrons of the inn, cheering laughing and carrying on as they had the night before. Blissfully unaware of the strange experience he and his fellows had after the mysterious bard's song. Something changes, as if the visions is mixed, the spell is confused, the target is unclear. There is another vision, this one black and fleeting. Swirls of darkness and madness, of pure magical energy. The force is strong and Dimal's mind is wracked with pain as it tries to comprehend the meaning of the twisting, writhing, essence of magic... Then the visions fade and he sees a familiar face, that of the bard who played at the inn the night before and whose moonstone beads had brought them to this place. A second vision clouds this one, a ragged woman, skin old and worn. She looks like she may be dead, but she moves and walks - a lich perhaps? Before he can focus on her the spell ends and his vision clears.
Jul 29, 2015 7:09 pm
Dimal cants back as he slowly refocuses on the actual world around him. grounding himself in the faces of his companions he pauses to collect his thought and try to process the blur of images that are still swirling through his head.

"This tale gets stranger and stranger my friends. The voices at the bottom of the cave seem to be the patrons of the bar last night but they are carrying on like they don't realize they are at the bottom of a cave... There also seems to be a very dark presence that really didn't like me poking around with my scrying, though I did see the bard from last night but wasn't able to discern what she was doing or where she was located. She seems to be entangled with an animated corpse, possibly a lich or some other variety of undead. I will not be scrying anytime in the near future unless there is great need, I apologize for the distinct lack of useful information."

Dimal shakes his head again to try and clear some of the pain from the scrying and puts his flute back in Crushers pack. Maybe a more direct view of the situation might be in order. Perhaps Ziesra would be willing to investigate further?"
Jul 30, 2015 10:44 pm
Elandra looks just as puzzled as Dimal at his words. "That's....strange, though we've dealt with strange before. Yes, perhaps at this time a stealthy reconnaissance is necessary."

"I can cast invisibility on myself and Z. I could cast for others, if need be."
Aug 23, 2015 2:51 am
"Only if I'm going down - I'm not especially stealthy."
Aug 26, 2015 3:29 pm
"It would probably be best to send Z down scouting before we all jump feet first into the proverbial fire."
Aug 31, 2015 3:28 pm
After much deliberation, Z is sent down in advance of the group, but soon returns. The serpent reports that the stair continuous for some distance, well beyond the distance she can explore on her own. It appears to be the entrance to something, although what she is uncertain.
Sep 2, 2015 3:45 pm
"Well, I sure didn't think the stairs were going to be that deep. So now we have a choice, do we descend these stairs and see what the good tavern people have to offer us or do we retrace our steps and see where that door leads us? My personal opinion is to see where the story in front of us leads and descend down the stairs, unless anyone disagrees?"

Dimal adjusts his clothes and ready's his gear in anticipation.
