Campaign-Level Realities

These are the high-level facts occurring in the world that will drive the story of the Campaign forward. The heroes know very little of this information, but as pieces are slowly uncovered their grand quest will take shape.

End Goal
The island nation of Ukiyo is the body of a sleeping god, Oneiros. He is beginning to stir from his sleep. If he were to fully awaken it would be cataclysmic for the inhabitants of Ukiyo. Members of the five clans will have to unite to perform a ritual to put Oneiros back to sleep for another Millenium. There are glimmers in the historical record of the last time the clans united to perform this ritual, artifacts hidden about the world that hint at its nature, and the quest the heroes must undertake. But most of the facts have been lost, or subsumed in fantastical myths that are now more fantasy than fact.

1,000 years ago, the Heirs of the five clans united to put Oneiros back into his slumber. One of those clans, House Sato, had a different goal. They dreamed of enchanting the mind of the sleeping god to take hold of his power and wield it as their own. Their plan was foiled and Oneiros was lulled back to sleep, but at the cost of the entire Mori Clan's noble line.

A thousand years have passed, and the opportunity nears once again for the Sato clan to fulfill their ambition.

The Spirit World
Inspirations: The Umbra in Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Mononoke Hime, Spirited Away
Alongside the material world is a spirit world, populated by curious, delightful, and dangerous personifications of the world's entities and ideas. The spirit world is in fact the Dream of Oneiros, the slumbering god. The material and dream worlds are closely intertwined, and echoes of the spirit cross into the material world.

Clues from the Past
Among the vestiges left behind by the heroes of a thousand years ago is a heavily enchanted well that taps into a leyline of the land. The well, buried in a hidden chamber deep below the Davo Clan Temple, is filled with a shimmering golden sake that tastes like wild honey and carries the aroma of spring wildflowers. Around the Lightwell are sake jars (mostly long-since broken) labeled with the name 'Kouki.' A single sip of this liquid forces the players sideways through the veil into the Spirit World (though they have to find their own way back). The well in fact taps a vein of the slumbering god, and is literally the blood of Oneiros.
