1st level, follow the book. If you have questions or need help, feel free to ask.

*Now that character creation has been completed, this can now function as a place for OOC.

Just wanted to share that I am making a Guardian dog. I hope others see this and join soon. I'm excited!
Aug 5, 2017 2:13 pm
Planning a Ratter/Mutt, if that's OK. Loosely based on my mum's dog
It's my first time here so I'm not quite sure how it works. As there is no Pugmire template in the Characters section, do we just use the 5th ed one and replace the skills with the relevant ones and add Tricks as Feats?
Anyway, I'll create the character by the book and will fill in the official sheet. I can then email you a copy?

As for the game itself, I assume it's a forum style thread where the GM sets the scene and then the players state what they are doing?

Oh, important note, I'm in the UK so likely awake at different times as players in the US (i.e. not when it's evening in the US). If this is an issue, please let me know.

Thanks,
Ozzy

Yeah, feel free to use whatever is in he book.

Correct, I had to change very little from the 5th edition sheet (you can take a look at it here). No need for email, everything can be done by the site:
1. Go here.
2. At the bottom, there is a 'New Character' spot, give it a label and select Dungeons and Dragons 5th then click 'Create'. Should take you to a blank 5th edition sheet.
3. Fill out all pertinent information, hit save, and go to this game's detail page and look for 'Submit a Character'; your character should show up, hit submit and I'll be able to see your sheet.
Correct, when all the characters have been submitted I'll throw up a game thread setting the scene and you players will post how you act.

No issue at all, I've played with someone from the UK, that is the beauty of PbP.
Aug 5, 2017 3:44 pm
Character submitted! Might change my mind and swap CHA and CON, though.
Aug 5, 2017 5:25 pm
It looks like you're missing your second Mutt trick, unless I'm reading that wrong.
Aug 5, 2017 5:34 pm
HypCo says:

You only get one breed trick. page 68: "Your character’s breed and background come with one trick each."
Confirmed on page 76, At first level, a dog gets one specific breed trick to start with and for Mutt it says "Choose one from"
Only if I take a further Breed Trick when going up a level, I need to take it from the same Breed as the first one.

Ah, I was reading that Mutt's get two starting breed tricks but it's talking about past 1st level. Got it, thanks.
Aug 10, 2017 2:54 am
Since we've got a Ratter and a Guardian, I'll make a Hunter :)
Aug 10, 2017 2:55 am
Hi Naat! Do we have a fourth player yet?
Aug 10, 2017 3:10 am
No forth, as of yet, but I finally got around to posting a dedicated player request post today so hopefully we get someone soon. However, I made a character and am perfectly fine with having a four man party, if we don't want to wait and get no further interest.
Aug 10, 2017 3:12 am
Rolling for Ideal, Bond, Flaw!

Rolls

Ideal - (1d6)

(5) = 5

Bond - (1d6)

(6) = 6

Flaw - (1d6)

(1) = 1

Aug 10, 2017 3:16 am
Submitted! I don't think I missed anything :)

Geez, you're an absolute monster, that was so fast.

It ain't much different than 5e, and you know that I can navigate that like the back of my hand :P

150+ IQ don't hurt either ;)
Aug 10, 2017 3:42 pm
Hi everyone! :-D

So how do I do this? I don't have the book.
Aug 10, 2017 3:51 pm
Welcome aboard, Jabes.

It is relatively straight forward, much like 5e: pick a Breed (race), Calling (class), and background.
Assign ability scores: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8 (+2 to one stat, depending on your breed.)

Let me know if you have a specific dog breed you want to play as, as well as what class you want to be, and I'll give you the basis for them.

They relabeled the Skills (I have mine listed by ability score: Here.)
Aug 10, 2017 4:08 pm
Corgi. 'Cause I had one IRL but he died. :-(

What do they call Fighters in this game? Or maybe a Rogue? What role is the current party lacking?
Aug 10, 2017 4:31 pm
[ +- ] Guardians (Fighters)
[ +- ] Ratters (Rogues)
I'm afraid I don't have too much real life experience with corgi's so I can't give you an accurate breed choice, so I'll list them all and you can pick what best fits or which ever you like more
[ +- ] Breeds
[ +- ] Background
Aug 10, 2017 4:35 pm
The party is lacking a healer, but I won't force someone into a role. If we don't get a healer, I'll make sure there are ways to deal without.

Right now, we have:
a guardian
a ratter
a hunter
and
an artisan.

Do note though, that even though you pick the same calling, they can be vastly different.

I think I'll make a Guardian. My Corgi was actually only part Corgi, so maybe a Mutt for this character then.

Absolutely. e.g. my Ratter is more like a black market trader than a rogue.
Aug 11, 2017 4:15 pm
Hey Jabes. Awesome Corgi! Is that a companion breed too? I'm playing a French bulldog guardian

I believe a Corgi is a Pointer. I went with a Mutt. :-)
Aug 11, 2017 4:48 pm
Oh right! This is all so new and exciting. If I had a tail I would be wagging it
Aug 11, 2017 6:11 pm
Corgis are strictly speaking Herders but the book specifically mentions you can put a family in any Breed so you could have a St. Bernhard Companion. ;)
Aug 11, 2017 9:19 pm
I forgot you're new, so a couple of common practices on this site. All of this stuff can be found just above this text box.

Speaking is typed in bold. ex: "How neat is that?"
Thoughts are italicized. ex: Wow, that's pretty neat.

(I don't think these apply in this game but I'll add them anyway) Telepathy and mind speaking, I throw it into a spoiler then bold and green it. ex:
[ +- ] Message
Different language, I throw it in a spoiler labeled the language I'm speaking. ex:
[ +- ] Halfling

OOC:
OOC is used whenever you have question out of character. Helps me differentiate whether it's the character or player asking.
There is a drop down menu that says Player, if you click that it should drop down and show your character, allowing you to post as your character. This makes it easier for me to view your character sheet during combat and makes it easier for other players to know who is talking.
Aug 11, 2017 9:31 pm
Ah, I missed the dropdown. Thanks for the instructions.
Also, posts need a "like" option so you can just acknowledge having read them.

Quick note: I'm in the UK, so five hours ahead of Eastern US Time. Just in case you're wondering why there is no further reply in the next 7 hours or so. :) I'll also be at a party tomorrow evening. Hope that's not too much of an issue.
Aug 11, 2017 11:26 pm
You're good on my end, I don't mind slower pace games.
Aug 12, 2017 4:14 pm
I'm sorry it took me a while to post. Been busy, and you guys know I'm on the other side if the world, too! :-)

It was so much fun writing that first post! This is going to be great! :-)
Aug 17, 2017 7:28 pm
I just got a promotion, which officially starts on 8/22, but I have been swamped with preparatory stuff. I am trying to keep up with all of my games, but I ask that you be patient with me during the transition.
Aug 18, 2017 9:23 am
Congrats, Nate! Are we in only 11 games together? That can't be right? LOL! :-D
Aug 18, 2017 11:18 am
Hey ya'll. I'm going to GenCon today and tomorrow, so I highly doubt I'll be posting before Sunday. TTYL
Aug 18, 2017 11:32 am
Just a little jealous (because I don't do crowds well). Have fun!

Woof! *sniff, sniff* Where'd everybody go?
Sep 17, 2017 5:00 pm
Wondering the same thing. All my games have come to a standstill.
Sep 17, 2017 5:11 pm
This was my fault, I'm really bad at gauging when I should skip forward and by the time it becomes blatantly obvious, I forget to act on it. I'll do a hand wave forward to tomorrow and we can begin adventuring again.
Sep 17, 2017 5:31 pm
Sounds good. I've found that I'm usually waiting on one player, so they get to be passively played by the GM or skipped.
Sep 17, 2017 5:44 pm
I'd also like to extend an offer to one of my other games; I could use one or two more people to help things along. Link to the game. Ignore the starter set, it is not that anymore; this game began as an introduction for a few people before I was accepted as a player in another LMoP game so, to avoid spoilers to myself, I stopped running it. Just need a quick character or two, they're not required to be fleshed out, at all really.
[ +- ] I can assure you though, the game will certainly be interesting.
Sep 17, 2017 6:06 pm
As long as it's not LMoP, I'm interested. I promise to bring anarchy! :-D

I can promise it's not LMoP, as I said, I wanted to keep myself spoil-free in Naat's game. We didn't get too far into it but if you want to avoid any spoilers just read the latest post when you join. I'd be happy to have you.

What a horrible roll. *hides*
Sep 18, 2017 9:57 pm
A request, can we use the game terms from the Pugmire book, please? (e.g. advantage, not edge)
Off to bed now, see you tomorrow.
Sep 18, 2017 10:12 pm
[ +- ] Not sure I follow, in my book, the game terms are edge and handicap.
I'm more than happy using advantage/disadvantage terms, as that is what I'm most familiar with.
Sep 18, 2017 10:45 pm
Yeah it's called "Edge" in Pugmire. "Advantage" is a D&D 5th Edition term.
Sep 19, 2017 8:17 am
Jabes.plays.RPG says:

Which version do you have?
I can't find "edge" anywhere, neither in PDF nor print. e.g. page 94 Help: Give a nearby (within 20 feet) ally an advantage on an attack roll or ability check before your next turn.
page 86: Roll the die or dice. If the character has an advantage, use the higher result. If the character has a disadvantage,
use the lower roll. A higher number is generally better.

HypCo says:
[spoiler="Not sure I follow, in my book, the game terms are edge and handicap."]
No such thing in my book. I can't even find the section you posted (see above examples). Your bit says "Rules", mine says "How Do I Play Pugmire". Is yours the early access version?
Sep 19, 2017 10:05 am
Mine says early access. Have they updated it? *checks DTRPG* Oh hey Pugmire is on the top-selling list! And it's the core rulebook for $15. Well now this explains something I think.
Sep 19, 2017 10:11 am
It would help if everyone used the final rules, especially the Guide. Lots of things have changed since Early Access, including wordings of some tricks, skills and spells.
I checked with Eddy and he says the Early Access was written before the SRD was out so various items were changed, including edge/handicap.

It was number 1 from the day it came out for about week. :) Then it kept swapping places with Star Trek Adventures, then the Starfinder book and then Changeling 20th Anniversary came along.
Sep 19, 2017 12:05 pm
Oh yeah, I still have early access version. I may have to look into getting the final book.
Sep 19, 2017 6:44 pm
It might take me a couple weeks to get the book. I've gotta get some credit cards paid off.
Sep 19, 2017 6:59 pm
It won't be a requirement to have the core book. I still only have the early access and can't afford the core book, so no worries no one will be kicked for only having the early access pdf.
Sep 19, 2017 7:50 pm
HypCo says:

That's OK. For some reason I thought you had backed it on kickstarter and had the full PDF when the game started. I'll shout if something comes up again. :)
Sep 20, 2017 12:23 am
Thanks! 😄
Sep 20, 2017 6:58 pm
Rules question. Unlike the SRD, Pugmire doesn't have rules for grappling. Basically Wastl doesn't want to kill the bandit but grab and hold him so we can question him.
Sep 20, 2017 7:10 pm
We can use 5e ruling, an opposed strength check vs. the target's strength/dexterity check. I don't see too much problem with it seeing the similarities shared between the two systems.
Sep 20, 2017 7:56 pm
That was my thinking.
Sep 21, 2017 5:55 pm
For level 2 Stamina we roll our stamina die, right? There's no option to "take the average" like in D&D 5e?

Rolls

Stamina - (1d10+2)

(10) + 2 = 12

Sep 21, 2017 6:01 pm
I was under the impression you automatically get max: At each level, the player adds a number of stamina points to her maximum total, based on her character’s calling, and gains another stamina die. I don't see anything about rolling or averages.

Yeah, you automatically get maximum. Pugmire Early Access (pg. 46): Your dog’s stamina points are determined by his calling, which gives a set number that is added to his Constitution for a final number of stamina points. Every time your dog gains a level, that amount is added again to his stamina point total, giving him more and more stamina points.

Also pg. 31 has a small bit enforcing that ruling as well.
Sep 21, 2017 6:05 pm
Gained 12 HP and refined archery. (I can now use a bonus action to attack the same target again)
Sep 21, 2017 6:17 pm
I obviously need to attend: http://cdn.hexjam.com/editorial_service/bases/images/000/009/138/medium/zoolander-for-blog.jpg?1427992126

I gained 12hp and Cleave.

Wow. I'm not used to such an active game. Usually, I can go days without a single post. I'll try to check back more often.
Looks like I get 12 hp but I don't see level info in the early access pdf. What does a guardian get?

Guardian gets Cleave, Fighting Style, Inspiring Word, and Leadership

PEA pg. 72-73: For what options you get on level up.
PEA pg. 51-53: For guardian calling tricks and refinements.
PEA: pg. 59: For the start of breed tricks.
Sep 21, 2017 7:29 pm
Advancement rules from the published version:
At each level, the player does the following:
• Adds a number of stamina points to her dog’s maximum total, based on her character’s calling
• Gains another stamina die
• Spellcaster characters gain two additional spell slots (plus another one if their Constitution modifier increases)
• Spellcaster characters choose two more spells (p. 101)

Every two levels, the character’s proficiency bonus also increases by one.

The character also gets one improvement each level. This can be any of the following:
• Increase an ability score by 1 up to a maximum of 20. Also, take a new skill.
• Take a new calling, breed, or aptitude trick.
• Refine an existing calling or masterwork trick.
(I can't remember if refinement was in the Early Access rules, if not, hit me up)
Sep 21, 2017 8:04 pm
Refinement is in the Early Access rules.

I have FINALLY started doing the job that I got promoted to before. Previous to this, it's all been slow-paced training and being a mentor to new people. I am FAR busier now than before, so my posting will decrease a massive amount :(

I will do my best to keep up with the games that I am in, but please be understanding if I am a bit slow!
Oct 20, 2017 9:17 am
I'm in a somewhat similar situation. My boss quit 3 weeks ago so I did 2 people's jobs for 2 weeks and now have had help (but no new boss and I don't want the promotion) for the last week. My normal 50 hr weeks have become 60 hr weeks. Most days I come home exhausted and have forgotten to even check some games. Still, I'm here.
Jan 12, 2018 4:06 am
Going to drop out of this to free up some space :)
Feb 27, 2018 4:49 pm
Any chance this is still happening?
Feb 27, 2018 8:47 pm
Sadly, probably not. While I did enjoy the setting immensely, I'm a bit too bogged down to learn, or re-pickup rather, a new system. Perhaps in the future the doggos will return but as of now, they sleep.
