Just wanted to share that I am making a Guardian dog. I hope others see this and join soon. I'm excited!
Aug 5, 2017 2:13 pm
Planning a Ratter/Mutt, if that's OK. Loosely based on my mum's dog
It's my first time here so I'm not quite sure how it works. As there is no Pugmire template in the Characters section, do we just use the 5th ed one and replace the skills with the relevant ones and add Tricks as Feats?
Anyway, I'll create the character by the book and will fill in the official sheet. I can then email you a copy?
As for the game itself, I assume it's a forum style thread where the GM sets the scene and then the players state what they are doing?
Oh, important note, I'm in the UK so likely awake at different times as players in the US (i.e. not when it's evening in the US). If this is an issue, please let me know.
Thanks,
Ozzy

Yeah, feel free to use whatever is in he book.
Correct, I had to change very little from the 5th edition sheet (you can take a look at it here). No need for email, everything can be done by the site:
1. Go here.
2. At the bottom, there is a 'New Character' spot, give it a label and select Dungeons and Dragons 5th then click 'Create'. Should take you to a blank 5th edition sheet.
3. Fill out all pertinent information, hit save, and go to this game's detail page and look for 'Submit a Character'; your character should show up, hit submit and I'll be able to see your sheet.
Correct, when all the characters have been submitted I'll throw up a game thread setting the scene and you players will post how you act.
No issue at all, I've played with someone from the UK, that is the beauty of PbP.

It looks like you're missing your second Mutt trick, unless I'm reading that wrong.

HypCo says:
It looks like you're missing your second Mutt trick, unless I'm reading that wrong.Confirmed on page 76, At first level, a dog gets one specific breed trick to start with and for Mutt it says "Choose one from"
Only if I take a further Breed Trick when going up a level, I need to take it from the same Breed as the first one.

No forth, as of yet, but I finally got around to posting a dedicated player request post today so hopefully we get someone soon. However, I made a character and am perfectly fine with having a four man party, if we don't want to wait and get no further interest.

Welcome aboard, Jabes.
It is relatively straight forward, much like 5e: pick a Breed (race), Calling (class), and background.
Assign ability scores: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8 (+2 to one stat, depending on your breed.)
Let me know if you have a specific dog breed you want to play as, as well as what class you want to be, and I'll give you the basis for them.
They relabeled the Skills (I have mine listed by ability score: Here.)

Corgi. 'Cause I had one IRL but he died. :-(
What do they call Fighters in this game? Or maybe a Rogue? What role is the current party lacking?

The party is lacking a healer, but I won't force someone into a role. If we don't get a healer, I'll make sure there are ways to deal without.
Right now, we have:
a guardian
a ratter
a hunter
and
an artisan.
Do note though, that even though you pick the same calling, they can be vastly different.

First trick (Feat.): Choose one Fighting Style or Inspiring Word
(Fighting Style: The guardian has mastered a particular fighting style, giving him certain advantage in combat. The first time this trick is chosen, choose from the following options:
~ Defensive style: +1 to defense when wearing armor.
~ Dueling style: When wielding a melee weapon in one paw and no other weapons, damage rolls gain +2.
~ Great Weapon Style: When wielding a two-pawed melee weapon, a 1 on a damage die can be rerolled, but the new roll is final.
~ Protection Style: When wielding a shield and when an opponent attacks an ally within 5 feet of you, use a reaction to give the opponent a handicap (disadvantage).
~ Two-weapon fighting style: When wielding two light weapons, add a second melee attack.)
(Inspiring Word:
Using leadership and strength of personality, the guardian encourages allies to keep fighting. If the ally is within 60 feet and can see or hear the guardian, she can use a bonus action and speaks something encouraging, allowing that ally to immediately use a stamina die to regain stamina points. This can be used a number of times equal to the guardians Charisma modifier before the dog needs to sleep.)
[ +- ] Mutts
Mutts aren't a collection of families, but a hodgepodge of dogs without any clear lineage. They don't have a history,
a pedigree, or even a common last name. However, crossbreeding between the various dog families and breeds has helped create diverse dogs that are able to survive a wide variety of dangers.
Example Families: None. Many are adopted into other families, either by one of the dog's parents or by a caring family.
Some of the free dogs have started to band together under the name "Mutt" to give them a sense of family and unit, but many free dogs refuse to use any family name.
Ability bonus: +1 to any two abilities.
First trick: Mutts can pick from any breed's first tricks (Puppy Dog Eyes, Hardy Constitution, Keen Observer, Voracious Reader, Speedy Runner, or Brute Strength). Let me know which one you want me to go into detail.
Second trick: If a Mutt takes a second breed trick, they must take it within the same breed group as the first trick.

Corgis are strictly speaking Herders but the book specifically mentions you can put a family in any Breed so you could have a St. Bernhard Companion. ;)

I forgot you're new, so a couple of common practices on this site. All of this stuff can be found just above this text box.
Speaking is typed in bold. ex: "How neat is that?"
Thoughts are italicized. ex: Wow, that's pretty neat.
(I don't think these apply in this game but I'll add them anyway) Telepathy and mind speaking, I throw it into a spoiler then bold and green it. ex:Different language, I throw it in a spoiler labeled the language I'm speaking. ex:
There is a drop down menu that says Player, if you click that it should drop down and show your character, allowing you to post as your character. This makes it easier for me to view your character sheet during combat and makes it easier for other players to know who is talking.

This was my fault, I'm really bad at gauging when I should skip forward and by the time it becomes blatantly obvious, I forget to act on it. I'll do a hand wave forward to tomorrow and we can begin adventuring again.
Sep 17, 2017 5:31 pm
Sounds good. I've found that I'm usually waiting on one player, so they get to be passively played by the GM or skipped.
Sep 17, 2017 5:44 pm
I'd also like to extend an offer to one of my other games; I could use one or two more people to help things along. Link to the game. Ignore the starter set, it is not that anymore; this game began as an introduction for a few people before I was accepted as a player in another LMoP game so, to avoid spoilers to myself, I stopped running it. Just need a quick character or two, they're not required to be fleshed out, at all really.
[ +- ] I can assure you though, the game will certainly be interesting.

As long as it's not LMoP, I'm interested. I promise to bring anarchy! :-D

I can promise it's not LMoP, as I said, I wanted to keep myself spoil-free in Naat's game. We didn't get too far into it but if you want to avoid any spoilers just read the latest post when you join. I'd be happy to have you.

A request, can we use the game terms from the Pugmire book, please? (e.g. advantage, not edge)

[ +- ] Not sure I follow, in my book, the game terms are edge and handicap.

Sep 19, 2017 8:17 am
Jabes.plays.RPG says:
Yeah it's called "Edge" in Pugmire. "Advantage" is a D&D 5th Edition term.I can't find "edge" anywhere, neither in PDF nor print. e.g. page 94 Help: Give a nearby (within 20 feet) ally an advantage on an attack roll or ability check before your next turn.
page 86: Roll the die or dice. If the character has an advantage, use the higher result. If the character has a disadvantage,
use the lower roll. A higher number is generally better.

Mine says early access. Have they updated it? *checks DTRPG* Oh hey Pugmire is on the top-selling list! And it's the core rulebook for $15. Well now this explains something I think.
Sep 19, 2017 10:11 am
It would help if everyone used the final rules, especially the Guide. Lots of things have changed since Early Access, including wordings of some tricks, skills and spells.
I checked with Eddy and he says the Early Access was written before the SRD was out so various items were changed, including edge/handicap.

It won't be a requirement to have the core book. I still only have the early access and can't afford the core book, so no worries no one will be kicked for only having the early access pdf.

Rules question. Unlike the SRD, Pugmire doesn't have rules for grappling. Basically Wastl doesn't want to kill the bandit but grab and hold him so we can question him.
Sep 20, 2017 7:10 pm
We can use 5e ruling, an opposed strength check vs. the target's strength/dexterity check. I don't see too much problem with it seeing the similarities shared between the two systems.
Sep 21, 2017 5:55 pm
For level 2 Stamina we roll our stamina die, right? There's no option to "take the average" like in D&D 5e?
Rolls
Stamina - (1d10+2)
(10) + 2 = 12
Sep 21, 2017 6:01 pm
I was under the impression you automatically get max: At each level, the player adds a number of stamina points to her maximum total, based on her character’s calling, and gains another stamina die. I don't see anything about rolling or averages.
Yeah, you automatically get maximum. Pugmire Early Access (pg. 46): Your dog’s stamina points are determined by his calling, which gives a set number that is added to his Constitution for a final number of stamina points. Every time your dog gains a level, that amount is added again to his stamina point total, giving him more and more stamina points.
Also pg. 31 has a small bit enforcing that ruling as well.

Advancement rules from the published version:
At each level, the player does the following:
• Adds a number of stamina points to her dog’s maximum total, based on her character’s calling
• Gains another stamina die
• Spellcaster characters gain two additional spell slots (plus another one if their Constitution modifier increases)
• Spellcaster characters choose two more spells (p. 101)
Every two levels, the character’s proficiency bonus also increases by one.
The character also gets one improvement each level. This can be any of the following:
• Increase an ability score by 1 up to a maximum of 20. Also, take a new skill.
• Take a new calling, breed, or aptitude trick.
• Refine an existing calling or masterwork trick.
(I can't remember if refinement was in the Early Access rules, if not, hit me up)

I have FINALLY started doing the job that I got promoted to before. Previous to this, it's all been slow-paced training and being a mentor to new people. I am FAR busier now than before, so my posting will decrease a massive amount :(
I will do my best to keep up with the games that I am in, but please be understanding if I am a bit slow!

I'm in a somewhat similar situation. My boss quit 3 weeks ago so I did 2 people's jobs for 2 weeks and now have had help (but no new boss and I don't want the promotion) for the last week. My normal 50 hr weeks have become 60 hr weeks. Most days I come home exhausted and have forgotten to even check some games. Still, I'm here.

Sadly, probably not. While I did enjoy the setting immensely, I'm a bit too bogged down to learn, or re-pickup rather, a new system. Perhaps in the future the doggos will return but as of now, they sleep.
