Lattice: Running Out of Rope

Aug 8, 2017 7:03 am
Much as she'd like to play the loner like Twilight or Goldaline, Lattice can't stay away from people. Her community spirit and need to belong runs headfirst into her paranoia, refusal to have obligations and fair-weatheredness. The quid pro quo networks and arms length friendships shes established are likely to come crashing down like a house of cards, and the knowledge she has of each of the warlords mechanical systems could take the entire city down with them in the death spiral. It's going to be a disaster when it happens...

"Which of you is the most strange?"
"Which one of you is the biggest potential problem?"
OOC:
Ask any questions about Lattice here, in or out of character
Rumour is, Lattice's most recent pet project is a mycoprotein production vat. She's worried about the food situation city wide and figures an extra source of it won't go amiss, and has been trying to get the small experiments she's had so far to go full scale.
OOC:
As per savvyhead playbook, got to have a project going. Let's hear how impossible it is going to be.

Canary isn't strange, and he's fairly cautious. If you think a large scale war between gangs is a bad then you might see him as the biggest problem.

I would say that Canary and Lattice have a professional relationship that involves them doing odd jobs for each other from time to time. Lattice is more of a lone wanderer, while Canary is that NPC that gives out quests! :P
While patronizing "Buckshot", one of the more popular bars in Atlas Terminal, Canary spies Lattice walking in with her usual gear. She might be on a job, but whatever.

"Ooho, it's the gasmask. Lattice, have a seat! We can tell stories about our surface adventures!"

He gently pats the empty chair next to him. The sun hasn't even risen and the bar is deserted aside from the guards, but it seems like Canary just got off a night shift of unloading cargo.

"We got fresh water and rum from the Water Lord himself!! ... It's made from sugar beets, or something. Do you have a drinking tube or mouth port on that mask? Do scavengers have to use secret hand signs to talk when they're on the surface?"

In terms of strangeness depends how you judge it Twilight is probably third behind Eddie and Goldaline in terms of raw weirdness but given their nature that's to be expected, but in terms of people who are odd with no clear reason Twilights probably the most out there. as for potential problem hes probably the biggest loaded gun roaming the city, hes not pointed at anyone yet but the trigger is loose
"Hey suits, good news from Banshes camp"
Twilight slips past Lattice before she has a chance to respond to Canaries offer, dropping a small pack - with the telltale shape of a gasmask and edges of machinery sticking out - into her hands.
"looks like he had a good find went down pretty deep, and decided to leave it and whatever he had on him behind for those still breathing."

"looks like he had a good find went down pretty deep, and decided to leave it and whatever he had on him behind for those still breathing."
Lattice looks into the sack, grimaces slightly and closes it up again. "Thanks. We told Lucian not to try a police station on his own but... well that makes three this month. I should probably take this to his folks at some point then..."

"... wait how did YOU get this?" she asks the empty space were Twilight previously was.

"H... h... How does he keep doing that..."
handle says:

"Found an old fast food place a while back. Plastic drinking straws...ksst. Got a lifetime supply of them now I guess"

Lattice sits down and loosens her rebreather mask enough to poke a bendy straw under it. Always a smart answer and an excuse to never show her face.

"I have a few minutes to burn I guess", she mutters, shaking the beet rum she's been offered, "scav sign language is a thing, sure. One hand, no facial expressions, and generally everything boils down to 'stop', 'grab that', and 'for fucks sake run!'. Kinda easy to pick up on the job"

She's not making the 'ksst' noises. Guessing she doesn't use her air supply up here all the time then. You'll likely talk business and tales with her for a bit, but be unable to get anything deeply personal out of her before she goes off to do some actual work
OOC:
Armstrong, Eddie and Goldaline to worry about then. Either Twilight or Canary are going to be trouble for Lattice for their own reasons, just trying to work out where to gauge Weirdness on the curve here. You're ALL odd; just which one of you is THE oddest I guess? :)

Oh good heavens, nothing is impossible! Just be particular about what sort of mycorrhiza you're utilizing... after all, there's no telling how the Mist has affected fungi: they're delightfully unpredictable on occasion. For more concrete obstacles, you're going to be looking at a few. Your controlled growing space will cover both respiration and contamination prevention, as well as the construction of the 40 ft growth vats, but the first major obstacle is going to be finding enough sugar to keep a productive vat fed; fungi are hungri, after all, and they love glucose. (You'll need to get a fuckton of sugar, OR it'll cost a fuckton of jingle.) That aside, the biggest enemy to getting a vat up and running is time. Specifically, to get a good yield out of a decently sized fermenter, it could take up to five weeks, depending on how ambitious you're feeling. After that though, you can harvest them regularly with no loss to productivity! (It'll take weeks of work.)

Hope that helps!

I'm struggling to come up with past interactions between Goldaline and Lattice. Maybe I'll wait a bit and let Eddie stir up some weird for you.

'Killer' ain't strange by conventional means, but he seems to avoid tech. It ain't that he don't know how to use it, he clearly can, and can strip a pistol right outta someone's hand when he means to; he just don't seem to like it. That's pretty weird by Lattice's standards, surely.

He looks like he ain't angling to be anyone's problem, but the problems he stirred up with Bozo's family might be causin' some trouble for Lattice

Time, money, and sugar. Think I can magic those up over this campaign. Something to work on.

Making my mind up about History soon. Canary or Twilight are the most trouble. Canary is likely to be the most obvious pressure bearing down on her since he's at least the nicest of all the murdering cutthroats running the show up here and likely the one who's positioned to get his claws in her. Twilight for reasons that'll just throw her off track and make her act in an utterly irrational manner. Cause he's cute. Still, not ruling anyone out there and got no ideas when it comes to Weirdest.

Questions for Killer and Goldaline first. Killer: Lattice is the longest surviving scavenger in the city, far as anyone knows: does this make her a good role model for your child, or an utterly terrible one that you want her away from? Is there any part of your arsenal I've not had to handle at some point, and what kinds of horrors will I have had to witness as part of the psychometry Things Speak gives out?

Goldaline: At any point have you ended up in a place that Lattice thought impossible to get to without going through the mist first? Have you talked to her about your wolves and do they match up with the fleeting glimpses of the things at sewer level that Lattice occasionally glimpses? Have we traded notes at some point to make our lives at least a bit easier?

'Killer' respects a person who can stay alive in bad circumstances, and below the Mist is pretty much the worst he can think of. He may not say as much, but he damn sure respects Lattice. As to whether he'd want little Toni turning out like her? Hmmm... he's trying to raise her right, proper like his mamas taught him, and that was Before. He ain't sure he wants her sealed up in a wetsuit, but it beats gargling to death in her own blood, so he'll be listening for advice on survival.

As to his gear, Lattice saw into his duffel bag once when they worked together. He's got guns, lots of guns and big ones, all tied to the insides of the bag. They're clean and maintained, and like 'Killer' himself, they're capable of violence aplenty. But even when that big leathery bird-thing near tore his arm off, he didn't get 'em out, he wrassled the thing to death (with help). The juxtaposition of possessing such wealth of violence, and not using it, must surely seem odd to Lattice.

OOC:
Yes, one of the key features of Goldaline's den is safe passage down through the mist. There is no way she trusts anyone enough to let them near it though. She has been down enough that she knows a few other passages, but those are more susceptible to getting closed off and changed around. Goldaline has been slowly warming up to fold around town, but the two of you haven't gotten close yet. If you have made any scavenging runs together or traded notes, Goldaline agreed to do it purely for her own gain. Othe has not spoken about the wolves to anyone yet

Lets get this locked in given the responses I've got :)
Lattice considers Killer the weirdest: there's just a lot there to unpack there. She has +1Hx on him.
Canary is the largest source of employment and aggravation in her life and thus the most trouble as she gets pulled deeper into his web (nest. Whatever). She has +2Hx on him, and will be choosing a stat highlight for her for the first session.
Everyone else, Lattice has not managed to get a decent read on any of you whether it's because she stays mostly out of your way (Eddie), keeps to her work when you hire her (Pops, Armstrong), or provoke irrational responses from her that she can't rationalise (Goldaline, Twilight) and has -1Hx on them.

For the first session, my pick would be to highlight your Weird. After all, most of the cool savvyhead stuff is weird.
