I have pretty limited experience with rpg's but I love the format and try to immerse myself as much as possible. I would like to play something in the classic Dungeons and Dragons type setting, but I'm open to just about anything. I'm having some trouble finding an active game that seems to have spots open. Is there anywhere to add someone new?

I can always propose some Dungeonslayers. It's a free game available on the web (legally, I mean) which is in the vein of old school roleplaying games. It's pretty easy to learn and is rule light.

I've tried starting a game twice on here and failed, but who knows, maybe third time will be a charm...

I'll jump in with you for sure, a two person campaign might not work though

Well, in an emergency, if we have too few people interested, each players could play two characters each. That, and/or I could have a DMPC (more than likely the team,s healer as this role can get a bit tedious for a player...).

The rules are simple enough that playing two characters at once is definitely not a difficult thing to do.

I'm down, and we can see if anyone else wants to join in

I wouldn't mind dusting ole' Grapthor off, though it looks like I'll have to rebuild the character sheet. :-)
Oct 30, 2017 3:46 am
So are we looking to get something going here?
Oct 30, 2017 11:01 am
This might be just what I've been looking for. Count me in Kalajel!
Oct 30, 2017 12:22 pm
Hey new old school dungeon games sounds great.. count me in :)
Oct 30, 2017 4:26 pm
Okay, seems we have something here then.

Here is the download link for DS4.

As for houserules, I think I'll keep them to a minimum (it's probably what killed my 2 previous attempts), but I'll still use some highly suggested ones, such as allowing Mage characters to begin the game with 2 level 1 spells in order to be able to experiment with the spellchanging mechanics right away at level 1 and so that it's not too boring being stuck casting only that 1 spell for the whole first dungeon...

I'll also lower Hero classes availability at 8 level, since apparently, with the current level of availability, it made it difficult to make the character build you wanted to have.

Oh, and of course, the paladin, instead of gaining availability of the healer's spells at teh spell level +9 will instead gain a number of spell slots equal to his level -9. This doesn't sound like much of a change, but trust me, it makes thinks easier when it comes time to purchase your spells...

And hey, if you guys insist on having more races, talents, and spells, I can always include them as need be.

So I think I'll go ahead and start that game then...

Might take a bit more time. I seem to have encountered a bug and the site won't let me start the game right now. Posted on the site thread to tell Keleth about that little bug...

Make sure that you click the + button next to the Allowed Character Sheets dropdown before you try to create the game. You have to select it and then hit the +. Not sure if that's the issue or not, but I've seen people have issues with that.

Got my invite. Anyone thinking about particular classes?
Oct 30, 2017 5:10 pm
Dwarven Fighter for me. Reviving an old character from an earlier game. :-)

You have 3 basic classes, with the Mage beign broken down into 3 sub-classes. So you have:

• Fighter (pretty self-explanatory)
• Scout (the range attacker of the group).
• Mage:
- Healer (pretty self explanatory, the only Mage class capable of wearing armor, limited to leather).
- Wizard (protective, offensive and utility spells).
- Sorcerer (almost exclusively offensive).

Then later there is the possibility to pick up an Hero Class which further "specializes" your character.

I wanted to do a dwarven barbarian kind of thing let me look at what's available though.
Oct 30, 2017 8:08 pm
Sorry meant dwarf fighter
Oct 30, 2017 8:09 pm
Well, nothing says we can't have two dwarven fighters. The Berserker is a Hero Class though.

Just finished a big boss battle at my home game will check out the pdf later. But scout/ranged DPS sounds cool

I’m thinking human wizard or sorcerer. Got a busy day tomorrow but will try and get him rolled up by Wednesday.

What would be the preferable way to create a sheet for the forum here?
Oct 31, 2017 3:34 am
Well, as is usual with custom character sheets, you can do pretty much what you want, but I do have two different examples from past games which ended. So this should give you a good idea on how to set up your character sheet.
Oct 31, 2017 4:39 am
Thanks so much for this, I have a character up that I think will work. Can you take a look and, if you have the time, see if I jumped the gun on anything or if I missed anything? Ulfgar Lutgehr

I keep getting a message of "No character found"... Have you put your character into your library? Click on the book symbol so it becomes red.

Hey, no problems. Esteber Palmelia is an old favorite of mine. :D Keep in mind those were made before we had customization options for the custom sheets, so now you can use bold, italic, and colored text. Such options work great to differentiate Attributes from Traits, and to differentiate spell or talent names from their descriptions. ;)

Added to library now

@ Starrbeardo: Looks good. Your HP should be 22 though, and with that warhammer of yours, your initiative will be lowered down to 5. Also, you haven't taken your talent at 1st level. Finally, do not forget to pick up a dwarven culture for your character (those are on p.143, doing so will give you your native language as well as a bonus talent chosen from the small list in the table). then all you'll have left to do is pick up an extra language (probably Freetongue so you can speak with everyone else).
Make sure to submit it to the game page so I can officially approve it.

@Kalajel it says no character to submit do I need to recreate my character in the 13th age character sheet?

Yeah of all the standby characters I have, only the 13th Age ones appear in the dropdown menu.
Nov 1, 2017 4:59 am
Okay, it should be fixed now.
Nov 1, 2017 6:24 am
Submitted. I didn't see it in the rules, but I think I put a roll as a half or something, is that round down?
Nov 1, 2017 4:06 pm
You mean MR? No, don,t touch it. You can move half a meter in a round.
As for other checks, well since this is old school gaming, they leave a lot of things to each individual GM. So if we need to halve or even quarter something, I'll simply use normal mathematical rounding.
Nov 15, 2017 1:44 pm
Not sure if you have room or need for another player. If a spot opens up give me a holler :)
Nov 15, 2017 3:47 pm
Yeah sure, no problems.
Nov 15, 2017 6:04 pm
Thanks for the invite. I've got the rules downloaded and will ingest enough to get a character put together real quick.
Nov 15, 2017 8:32 pm
No problem. We do already have two scouts and two fighters though. Not that I'm forbidding to take those classes if you really want to, but making a wizard might round up the party well. You can also make a healer since I made an NPC one to accompany the party. Just keep in mind that playing the healer means that pretty much all you do in combat is... well... heal... This can be annoying for certain people.
Nov 15, 2017 8:47 pm
Welcome aboard. We just started the game, so you picked a good spot to jump in as far as I can tell.
Nov 15, 2017 11:10 pm
Good to know. I think I'll go ahead and try a wizard.
Nov 15, 2017 11:23 pm
Wizards have a bit of a "hidden advantage" in this game. When finding spell scrolls, if it's on the list of the Mage, he can read it to figure out which spell it is without needing any identify spells or the innate analyze magic ability of Mages. Since Wizards dips into spells which are also on the Healer's and Sorcerer's lists (much more so than the Healer or Sorcerer dips into each other's spell lists), he can make a good identifier of scrolls for the party.
Nov 15, 2017 11:29 pm
Since Knife is a Sorcerer, do we need a Wizard as well? Maybe I should go healer?
Nov 16, 2017 12:29 am
Do not think of DS4 Wizards/Sorcerers in terms of D&D. Healers are protectors and healers with some utility spells, Sorcerers are mainly damage dealers. Wizards dips in both (to various degrees: for example sorcerers are better with fire spells than wizards, but wizards are better with ice spells) but also have a lot of utility spells.

Also keep in mind, like I said earlier, that as a healer, you'll most likely heal others during battle, which can get a bit boring. If you're fine with that, then by all means make a healer, if not well you might want to try something else...
