The Star of Helia

OOC:
Since everyone seems pretty much ready-ish, I think we can start that game.
You are all currently in the small town of Cendor, a small farming and trading town which is pretty much halfway between teh dwarven city of Iron Hill and the human city of Westing. It is about 75 kilometer (a little over 46.5 miles) to the north-northeast of Westing as the crow flies and only slightly farther away than this to the south-southeast of Iron Hill, once again, as the crow flies. It rests at teh northwestern "corner" of the Dawn Woods, a forest full of lumber, nuts, and herbs, but also full of monsters... Some of you maybe were born here and lived there your whole life, some of you maybe moved here relatively recently (depending on how long-lived your race is), and others are merely passing by, looking for employment...

Some of you (at least those who can read) will either have noticed an announcement on the public board, or will have heard a town crier announce that Arla, the head priestess of the small shrine of Helia here in tow, is looking for a band of adventurers.

Eldritch has set himself up as an entertainer in a local inn, pulling simple card tricks for the locals. There he gets talking to potential adventurers he comes across, hoping to make some acquaintances that might apply for this job he read about.

Originally from Westing, Kanyil Trillweed, spends half a year in Cendor at the Temple of Light getting a formal education at her father’s request. It was through the Temple of Light’s grapevine that she heard rumors that the head priestess would be posting a request for adventurers. Though only fourteen years of age, she’d already become fairly clever at disabling mechanical devices and picking locks, having been taught the basics of the locksmith trade by her father for a few years now.

Today she has taken a day off from her lessons to hang around the inn and see who might show up to answer the head priestess’s posting and see if her talents may be of use. If so, and assuming the head priestess allows one of the temple’s students to join her band of adventurers, maybe she can make use of the opportunity to put her talents to use and make some coin at it as well. She stands at the edge of the crowd, watching a man perform card tricks. A rat sits on her shoulders nibbling at a lock of her tangled hair, while she absentmindedly fidgets at a padlock with a pick in her hand.

Grapthor wakes with a start. He has fallen asleep in the inn's common room with his head  resting on his scruffy leather backpack. The dwarf growls irritably as his fiery red beard momentarily catches in a packstrap buckle. Reaching for the ale tankard he spent his last coin on and finding it empty, his callused hand reaches for his warhammer instead. The feel of it is reassuring, though it does nothing to slake his thirst nor quiet the grumbling in his stomach. Time to go find some work.

Ulfgar makes his way into town coming from vaguely the same direction as Iron Hill. He's heard of rumors of adventurers being sought after so he wanders about looking for those who would fit the bill of the heroes from the stories his mother would tell him. So far he's seen people who look just like people. I man doing card tricks at an inn that Ulfgar can't afford entry to. There[s a girl with a rat pet, and even more normal looking people. For a moment he wished he was back in the mountains so that he could crush rocks with his warhammer, but then the thought vanished as he realized that perhaps he didn't look like an adventurer to anyone look for help either. He didn't have much by way of armor and must be looking a little grizzled from his travels. So he thought for a moment, how could he make himself known to other like minded individuals?

Feridir walks into town, seeing the dwarf looking into a window of the inn, he has a puzzeld look on his face.

Feridir walks closer to him and gives a small cough to grab his attention.

The vieuw is bettter inside master dwarf.

You now see a tall elf with a longbow standing behind you, long hair and a friendly smile on his face.

If you want you can join me inside make a great entrance together, while I look for Helia as she is seeking for adventurers

The assembled adventurers notice another dwarf, who have a holy symbol representing an anvil around his neck. The dwarves among the group recognize it as the holy symbol of Cor, the creator of the dwarves and god of the forge, more than likely marking him as a priest of that deity. Unlike the usual priest who dress in robes and brandish a quarterstaff, he wears leather armor and has two spears and a shield strapped on his back. He seems to be looking at the announcement on the board at the village square and then swiftly makes his way towards the temple.

"Little girl, come, pick a card, any card," smiles Eldritch at the little red head. The pale man is dressed in a deep purple robe, embroidered with runes, and his long black hair is braided and hangs loosely over his shoulders.

Trilly notices that the card magician is talking to her, inviting her to come volunteer for a trick. The offer is tempting but never being one to enjoy having attention brought upon herself, and partly fearing she’ll be made a fool of in front of the crowd, she politely shakes her head no and with a slight blush retreats further toward the back of the crowd.

"I've heard tales of elves. If you're looking for other adventurers as well I am more than happy to join you inside. My name is Ulfgar Lutgehr. If you prefer you can call me Gar." Ulfgar readies himself to follow the elf, clearly not knowing what he should do so he plans on following his new acquaintance's lead.

Both Feridir and Ulfgar are making their way to the small shrine of Helia in town, closely following the dwarven priest who was reading the announcement moments earlier.

Trilly follows the flow of the group heading towards the shrine.

Grapthor heads for the bar. He licks his lips but he hasn't the coin for another drink. "Barkeep. Ye know where a dwarf can get some honest work?"
Nov 12, 2017 4:26 am
OOC:
@ Jabes.
The barkeep answers Grapthor.

"I 'ear recently that Arla, the head priestess o' Helia here in town was lookin' fer adventurers. Maybe you should try there my good dwarf friend."
OOC:
@ Gaz, Star, fun.
The small group makes its way to the small shrine to Helia in town. Looking at the building it seem to be one of the biggest building in town, made of old masonry which has been patched as best as possible through the years. The size and shape of the building seem to suggest that it is serving the roles of temple, school, and possibly orphanage all in one. A stylized sun is emblazoned on the front of the shrine, indicating it is a place of worship for followers of Helia, the Goddess of light.

@So, elf, do we just go in? And what of those who are following us? I'm not usually around this many people, I'm not sure what to do.

"Adventurers, eh? Beats muckin' out stables, I s'pose. Thank ye kindly!" Grapthor grabs his things and stumps out onto the street. Blinking through the fog of his hangover, he makes his way to the shrine of Helia. At first, Grapthor sets out in the wrong direction but after getting lost and asking for directions he finally gets it right.

Packing up his cards and thanking the small audience, Eldritch follows the assembled to join other adventurers.

The group is assembled at the temple of Helia. An elf, two humans, and three dwarves. They announce that they are answering Arla's demand for adventurers to a servant at the entrance. The group is then led to an antechamber and asked to patiently wait as the servant will fetch Arla. While waiting, the group has the time to admire the modest decorations of the temple. Cendor is a small town after all, they probably do not have that much money to spare for the decoration of their temple... Still, the dwarves will be able to catch with their discerning eyes a bit of dwarven craftsmanship here and there. This makes sense since the dwarves from Iron Hill further north often come here to trade with the human merchants from Westing further south as well as the rest of the Freelands.

Eventually, a human woman who looks to be in her late 30s, dressed in the white robes of a priestess and adorn with another stylized sun emblem on her vestments enters the room and greets you, thanking you for your patience.

"Hello there adventurers. Sorry to have kept you waiting, but as the head priestess of this temple, my days can be quite busy, even though this is but an humble small shrine in a small town... Well, I should stop wasting your time with tales of my priestly obligations now and get straight to the point, I suppose. The reason I need adventurers is because I need to have the ruins of an old temple of Helia located on Bear Peak in the middle of the Dawn Woods explored. After pouring through ancient texts, I have reason to believe that an ancient relic of the fait of Helia, thought lost to us centuries ago, might still be residing there. Bear Peak is roughly 38 kilometres away (a little over 23.5 miles) as the crow flies. But moving through hunting trails will definitely take longer."

Then, with a bit of nervousness she concludes.

"As for reward, I'm afraid being a small shrine located in such a small town, we do not have much to offer you beside the gratitude of the church of Helia and the town of Cendor, I'm sure I could scrounge up a small purse of gold pieces if you are the kind of adventurers who work for money. So, will you accept the job?"

Kanyil, excited about the prospect of going on an adventure and exploring about in some ancient ruins, but worried that drawing the priestess’s attention might bring up the issue of a fourteen year old girl ditching her lessons to go on some quest probably more suitable for older and more experienced folk, remains silent. Each year her father has been generously donating a significant portion of his meager income as a locksmith in Westing to the temple of Light in exchange for her receiving a formal education and he certainly would not approve of this, but what he didn’t know wouldn’t kill him. She could tag along, maybe make her skills with mechanical devices and locks useful, come back home with a little bit of coin in her pocket, and her father would never need to know better. Besides, certainty this could be written off as some hands-on training and practical application of her education and talents thus far. Not everything regarding her schooling has to be learned sitting in a stuffy classroom, listening so some monotone instructor drone on about ancient history and mathematical concepts. Some lessons need to be taught through going out and doing. Going on this quest is part of that educational process. This is basically what her father has been paying for every year, and she’d be squandering her father’s money and sacrifices if she didn’t take this opportunity!

Having completed the mental gymnastics necessary to justify ditching her lessons to go adventuring without guilt, she decides the best course of action now would be to just remain silent, avoid drawing the priestess’s attention, and simply fall in step with the whomever decides to go. She’ll tag along, unlock some old treasure chest, save the day, earn the accolades of all the rest of the party, and come back to Cendor to collect her bounty. Then when the priestess says in surprise, "You did all this and basically recovered the artifact by yourself? But you’re too young to adventure," she’ll reply, "It’s a bit late for that now, isn’t it? Pay up, please!"

"Yes, this will all work out nicely," Kanyil thinks...
