Sorry for not developing anything the past few dawys I have onme last test today and then I should be free to post.

I think quite a few people were busy. I also will be busy this weekend on family vacation.

Okay Hello I am Huginn, that's my character's name as well. Huginn has been in and out of Seattle his whole life. He's originally from the Black Hills, but the tribal councils don't have any records on him. In fact no one does. He runs with a Talislegger named Slayde, they flip reagents and other mystic goods back and forth between Rapid City and Seattle. He's not that big for an Ork, he got the height but not the bulk - but maybe that's for the best, as he possess both an uncommon grace and exceptional social cunning you wouldn't expect. But Huginn is full of surprises... that's kind of his thing. By the time you see him coming, it's already too late. Word on the street is he pissed off some thugs not too long ago, some kinda deal gone wrong - and so they sent a Troll Street Samurai after him. Now this guy was no chump either - wired to the point of no return, should have been a no brainer... he ain't the first to go after Huginn and he most likely won't be the last. Nobody knows what really happened - apparently he got hit by a city bus, left broken bits of cyberwear scattered all over Fourth Ave. Well that got more than a few people curious about who this guy Huggin is... but no matter where you dig - you get nothing. He's not registered as a magic user, so... i mean, you can't get away with using magic if you're unregistered right? No way.... I didn't think so.

Sounds great! Let's put Huggin right in. Let's say he is acquainted with Greer and Wyvern. They met on a smuggling run a few months back.

So how do you want to handle the missing people? That's why I suggested splitting up, gives us an in-game reason for not interacting with them.

I got invited to the game and am keen to get stuck in. I'm pretty noobish with SR so trying to get my head around the system at the moment. I've read the full IC thread and have some character ideas in mind but before I craft a character is there any you want to see in particular?

I think you can throw any type if character in you want. Do you have a character concept? If so what ya thinkin'?

I am thinking of either a Dwarf magic user who is a talismonger particularly skilled in enchanting, artificing, alchemy etc. He's a bad ass harley riding, shotgun toting dwarf but owns an antique store as a means to sustain his hobby...collecting and studying old magical trinkets and talismans. Not sure of his versatility for this storyline though.

Or a character who is an IT call centre clerk by day and awesome decker outlaw by night...just a little nerdy and unfit.

I am also interested in a drone-focused rigger or a forger/locksmith sneak character.

Ultimately happy to play anything as its my first time. I do like my characters to have quirky weaknesses though rather than min maxxed

With our current group, I think we have:
- Decker (Wyvern)
- Face (Greer)
- Mage/Muscle(?) (Hugin)

So it looks like we have a lack of big boy muscle, but I think nearly any role could work!

Ok how about an ex military intelligence human who is gifted with weaponry and forging...downside is he is a huge conspiracy theorist bordering paranoid delusional and is one bad time away from a psychotic break down. He is highly regimented and gets pissed with sloppiness.

Follow up to the in game ooc.


It is hard to guage player engagement in PbP, we can't see each other's faces or body language. But how often players post and even ooc banter are metrics that are useful.


I understand there will be lulls and slow points because the story isn't engaging each character in that moment or people's real life kind of slows things down.


Right now I feel player postings seem to be in a lull.


What I always hope for when I check the posts in the morning is for players to find ways of pushing the story forward. I think this game has had many moments of really interesting character interaction. Maybe I am greedy because I want more.


I was asking what the players want because I genuinely want them to feel they have agency in the narrative. I personally prefer to err on the side of player agency over rules. I am hoping to find a way to encourage player engagement by talking with you all. I know you all are smart creative people. Please help me out :)

As a new player to the scene, I've had Peaches join along planning that she would become invested in the adventure through caring what happens to the parties involved.

As a rigger/face, this part of the story simply seems like she should have a supporting role.

As the story swaps to a different facet, I'll bring her more to the forefront.

For me, it is real life stuff impacting my participation, 100%. I'm interested in the story and characters.

I'm a bit like Marythyme here, I really like all my games and I'm usually somebody that tries to push the story forward, sometime in an unforeseen way (insert bar scene here...), but sometime life takes over a little more than anticipated.
I can personally tell you that a boss that wants you to do some overtime, three kids, a wife with a list of house chores she'd like help with are just a few things that can sometime leave me with less time than I'd like. Be assured that I am not one of those players that just stops posting and disappears without saying a word. Your game is great Aaron and I'll do my best to keep it alive.

I've been a GM much more than I've been a player, so I'll give some suggestions from that end.

A player engagement technique that Tom from the Gauntlet/Fear of a Black Dragon strongly recommends is asking players mood setting questions. For example, if a party were approaching a medusa's lair, he might say to them: "You see something at the entrance that immediately makes it clear this is the medusa's home. Describe it to me." This helps to set the mood for encountering such a horrible monster, as the players start really thinking about that medusas do – turn living things to stone.

When undertaking a long journey, he might ask the players to describe something that another character does that irritates them, and at the end of the journey he might ask them something about the other characters that they like or appreciate – to evoke emotions that reflect the rigours of a long trip and the relief of reaching the end.

I have not yet tried this, but I think it sounds good and I mean to use it in my future games.

I have used a similar technique to connect PCs to the world when the player has given minimal (or minimally usable) backstory. At some opportune point I just tell them, "You recognise someone from your past up ahead. Tell me who that is and what you think they might be doing here." I've only done this a few times, but it's always led to an interesting plot development and sometimes a recurring NPC that the player is connected to.

Similar to Qralloq, if I seem disengaged, it's just because I'm still getting to grips with what all's going on. Also, in the current scene, it's purely because Nyx is trying to keep quiet. I'm really enjoying the game, it's just that Nyx isn't overly sociable. I imagine she'll open up later.

Ok, thanks for the feedback everyone. It seems everyone here is going to stick around so I'll just take the lulls as natural pbp. But I of course will always strive for keeping it engaging. Don't be surprised if you see me using some of Robago's suggestions.

Hey guys, I'd like to apologise for vanishing. After the holidays things turned pretty hectic for me, and to say Shadowrun is a learning curve is an understatement, particularly in PbP.

That said, if you're willing to let me stay, I should be able to get back into this now. Sorry if I caused any disruption.

No worries Bleak! I also was unable to keep up during the holidays. We only just started the game up again a few days ago. Jump on in. I think Nyx has about 2 actions stored up.

Sorry everybody, I'm currently on vacacion with my wife (and I left my kids home !) so my posting will probably be irregular until I'm back (february 1st). Until then, the Gm is more than welcome to play my character as he sees fit so that the game isn't staled because of me.

Hey guys, just thought I'd let you know I'll be rejoining with a different character after this combat. Currently having some issues submitting her though, so it could be a minute. I was playing her in another campaign when I joined this one, but it ghosted early on. She's got more of a character than Nyx, which is why I wanna play her.

Good news guys, I'm leaving for the airport in a hour and should be on my plane in the afternoon. It is a 5-6 hour and another 2 hour ride back home but tommorrow morning I'll be able to start posting normally again.

I have also been crazy busy with work. So haven't given this game the love it needs. My deadline is Monday so after that life should calm down again.

I'd like to swap out my character, too, if I could. Not loving the decker. What do we currently have?

We have a mage Lu, a skillomancer Checkmate, a rigger Peaches, a firearms expert Nyx and Wyvern our decker.

If only I had that a year ago I could have saved soooo much money!

So I'd want to trade out my decker for something that is not a decker. :)

Isn't someone cross-trained as a face, too?

Yeah, Peaches is a Face/Rigger. It's hard to fit even the core skills of two approaches.

Ok. Seems people were busy. Not sure what to do now. To be honest I think I have run out of steam for PbP for while. All the games I played in have gone silent and my other game that I was DMing has also lost all its players. I am also quite busy these days and have found other creative outlets.

I might be back on GamersPlane in the future but for now I'll say good luck and thanks for the great stories! This Shadowrun game had some really amazing scenes that I still love thinking back on.
