Chapter 1: Into the Mists

Dec 30, 2017 1:26 pm
To a party of seasoned adventurers such as yourselves, what you see is but another dull tavern in another dull town in some nameless province. It is but another span of time between the challenges of true adventuring.

Outside the tavern, a fog lies over the town this evening. The damp, cobbled pavement glistens as the lights of street lanterns dance across the slick stones. The fog chills the bones and shivers the soul of anyone outside .

Yet inside these tavern walls the food is hearty, and the ale is warm and frothy. A fire blazes in the hearth, and the tavern is alive with the tumbling voices of country folk.

Suddenly, the tavern door swings open, and a hush falls over the room. Framed by the lamp-lit fog, a form strides through the doorway. His heavy, booted footfalls and the jingle of his coins shatter the silence. His brightly colored clothes are draped in loose folds about him, and his hat hangs askew, hiding his eyes in shadows.

Without hesitation, he walks up to your table and stands proudly in a wide stance with folded arms. In an accented voice he says, "I have been sent to you. to deliver this message. If you be creatures of honor, you will come to my master's aid at first light. It is not advisable to travel the Svalich Woods at night!"

He pulls from his tunic a sealed letter, addressed to all of you in beautiful flowing script. He drops the letter on the table. "Take the west road from here some five hours march down through the Svalich Woods. There you will find my master in Barovia."

Amid the silent stares of the patronage, the gypsy strides to the bar and says to the wary barkeep, "Fill the glasses, one and all. Their throats are obviously parched." He drops a purse heavy with gold on the bar. With that, he leaves.

The babble of tavern voices resumes, although some what subdued. The letter is lying before you. The seal is in the shape of a crest you don't recognize.

As the messenger approaches the table Greymond slams down a vial of liquid onto the table assuming everyone jumped but not really giving any attention to anyone but the vial, Oh relax, he pats the vials on his chest hanging from his beard these are the volatile ones... . He finishes as the man reaches the table and he stops talking and any motion. Greymond can oddly be seen sitting as tall as anyone else in the tavern but is pretty evident that he's sitting on his backpack to make up height. Once the man finishes talking he takes the letter, passing it to whoever is on his left, still clutching the vial. Seems someone is in need of assistance. Odd looking seal though, nothing I've ever seen that I can recall. After giving up the letter he takes a swig of ale.

Ryn watched the strange man walk out of the tavern and he took another drink from his wine. Grabbing the letter from Greymond, he examined the letter and seal. "Well that was a short introduction, any ideas who is hiring us or what we are doing? It says a great evil but that could be almost anything. Baroth did you get any read on the man?" Ryn turned and handed the letter over to one of his other companions while he wracked his brain trying to recognize the crest or any information about the town of Barovia.

Ryn recognizes the name Barovia as a town spoken of in books, citing it as a battlesite and fishing town, but fails to recall any information on the crest or anybody by the name Indirovich. The town is not marked on your map.

Baroth takes the letter from Ryn. After he was done watching and observing the name that had dropped off the letter. He looks over the letter and see that there is evil and he speaks up. "If there is evil to vanquish, then I say that we leave at first light."

Baroth observes that the man had a bouncy, rhythmic gait, articulate, jovial voice, and bright-colored clothing characteristic of a minstrel as he strutted about the stone floor of the Spinning Wheel Tavern, a highly unusual sight. Everyone seemed to pay him attention from the moment he walked in the door to the moment he left.

The bartender lifts the bag of money off the counter and begins sending wenches around to fill glasses as per the man's request.

An interesting looking fella' to be sure. Hard to turn down an offer like that. "All the wealth available?" He gladly accepts the refill on his ale and takes a sip before repeating "Barovia" sounds like a rich sylvany type of place. I'm down for going and killing whatever needs killin'. Few more pints and then a well nights rest sounds astounding.

I'm with Baroth. Let's head at first light.

With the letter in his hand and his cup in the other, he walks over to the bar keep. He sets his cup down and waits for a refill. As the bartender refills his cup with ale he shows him the seal. "Do you know anything about the place Barovia? Or about the man Kolyan Indirovich?
Dec 31, 2017 3:50 pm
I've heard the Vistani talk about Barovia but nothing more. Those gypsies know more than they should, I tell you.
Dec 31, 2017 8:48 pm
"Where can I find these Vistani?"
Dec 31, 2017 9:15 pm
Ryn sat at the table sipping his wine thinking over the limited information. Swirling the remaining wine in his goblet, he downs it and sets it down on the table in front of him. "I don't usually like making agreements without more information, but I am for rooting out evil. Plus getting paid for it is a nice change. If everybody is in agreement I'm all for heading out in the morning."
Dec 31, 2017 9:57 pm
I agree, it really isn't much to go on is it? Looks like our friend is gleaning some information from our letter, lets go see what he's found out. He stands up and snatches his tankard off the table and begins his journey to the bar.
Dec 31, 2017 10:08 pm
Oh, I assumed you knew them as one just delivered your mail. They travel around, mostly near the Svalich woods, and trade with us occasionally. I didn't think they were in town but the fellow that just left proved otherwise.

"Thank you sir. You have been a great help." Baroth takes his full cup of ale back to the table as Graymond is climbing down from his chair. Baroth walks over and sits down, taking a sip of his drink. "I am not sure if I got any information that is useful. Apparently there is a group of gypsies that might know more about the town. We can see them on our way out."
Jan 2, 2018 4:50 pm
As Greymond had hoped down he noticed the paladin on his way back, but instead of taking the trouble of getting in his seat he just stands leaning against it taking a drink.

Gepsies? Hope we can trust 'em. He followed this up with a laugh. Maybe we can take some ale with us, if they lie to us, at the very least we'll enjoy ourselves while they do it. He paused for a moment allowing the silence to settle for a moment before bursting into laughter.

And so it was. You spent a night in the inn and went out in search of the gypsies at first light. Sure enough, there was a conspicuously colorful wagon with people buzzing all around it, packing tents and other supplies into the it. They seem mostly finished. Among them, you see the man who delivered your letter.

Wil walks ahead of our party, using the crowd as concealment, hoping to sneak up on the delivery man while the others approach.

Ryn approaches the man from the night before. "Ahem, my good man, you seemed to have left early last night. You should have pulled up a seat and had a few drinks with us, I mean you paid and all." Ryn let out a little chuckle, "Thank you for that by the way, after reading the letter we had some few questions about the letter and nobody in the bar could shed any light on the subject. For instance, what can you tell us about the land of Barovia and the Burgermaster, the man who is hiring us? What is this evil that has invaded the area? If it's only a five hour march, it seems strange that nobody at the bar could tell us anything about it."
