Interlude

The Imperial officer’s face turned ashen as the report from his comlink sunk in. He dashed for the front offices of the warehouse and arrived at the door of the commander’s office just as the sound of boot heels clicked down the hallway. The stormtrooper at the door gave him a puzzled look as he ordered, "You are relieved…head back to the barracks." The trooper saluted and moved off just as a woman in a crisp blue uniform appeared at the other end of the hall. The officer straightened and saluted. The woman eyed him sternly and did not reply, instead stepping past him into the commander’s office. She looked around the scene and gestured for the officer, still frozen in salute, to join her. He hesitantly walked inside.

She stood, hands clasped behind her and asked the officer without looking at him, "You know who I am?"

His voice trembled slightly, "Yes, ma’am. I do."

"And you knew that the two who came earlier were imposters."

"Yes ma’am."

"Very good. And you don’t babble. I like that. Commander J’cor talked too much. Helpful for me, not so helpful for him. Not a loyal man. A greedy man, a man who put personal profit above the good of the Empire. You’re not like that, are you Captain?" she asks, still not turning.

"No ma’am."

"Still, always a pity when an officer dies in the line of duty. Criminal scum. No respect for life."

"Ma’am? The commander is only stunned…"

She reached for the blaster on the desk and fired a single shot into the still form on the ground, creating a gaping hole in his chest.

"Like I said, a pity."

The officer swallowed and grew even paler. "Yes, ma’am."

She finally turned and a cold smile played across her lips, never reaching her eyes. "Very good, Commander. You are dismissed. I expect your full report by morning."

The woman placed the blaster back on the desk with a click and walked out. Once she was out of sight, the officer leaned heavily on the desk for a moment before straightening his uniform and his expression and marching from the room, the smoking corpse of his former commander behind him.
