Characters creation thread

Hey guys,

This is the first game I run on Gamers Plan, so I'm still getting my hands on the forum's administration/creation part. It shouldn't affect you guys, but any advice you can give will be welcome.
This is the thread where you can roll what you need to roll to create your character, and share what you want to.

Available resources
You might use anything from the Player Handbook (PHB) or the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide (SCAG).
I'd prefer you to stick to those two, but if a character option from another official published book would allow you to come up with an awesome concept, ask me: I'll take a look and let you know if I open this option.

I will use some optional rules from the Dungeon Master Guide (DMG) as I see fit. I’m open to reskinning things after approval, and might allow some spells customization as per the spell design guidelines (and damage type tiers).

And if you get your hands on magical items, they will be handcrafted with love by your GM :)

Creating your character
Create a character at level 1 using any available resource (see above). The human variant is available, as is the roll for starting gold rule.
For your characteristics, use the buy point or the standard array.

Well the intent is to try to limit ourselves to what's in the PHB and SCAG for two reasons :
* to keep the number of optional content to a reasonable amount
* to avoid giving my go on resources I don't know well (yet)
VGtM and MToF fall is that second category.

If you don't mind reworking your character using those resources, I'd prefer that. But I'm reading through the tiefling options offered by MToF and they look OK, so if your character concept doesn't work well limited to PHB and SCAG I may allow you to pick one of those.
I'll update the "available resources" section to mention that this is an option.

That's okay.

Can I use one of the tiefling variants in SCAG instead? I would like to use Devil's Tongue, which would replace Infernal Legacy.

The fourth player joined the game a minute ago.

You guys have got a week to create and polish your characters, check what you want with the others, and submit the character you end up with. Please, make sure to have a clear concept of who your character behaves (in battle as with others). Writing a background can help, but you don't need to write a novel ;)

In the meanwhile, I'll work on the scenario, maps, and overall design as this kind of campaign requires a lot of upfront work. I'll do my best to get things started next Monday. I'll let you know if thing can start sooner.

Hi all thanks for having me and looking forward to adventuring with your PCs.

I am thinking of going with either an undying warlock or necromancer wizard and may even look at oathbreaker paladin (maybe).

Basically character will be involved in dark necrotic arts. He will be an undertake and grave digger by trade and rather morbid. He eill resemble Tom Hardy's character in Taboo.

Let me know what you guys think of those options in terms of fitting in with the party as I note we have a lock already.

My PC is /Uthgardt/ /Tree Ghost Tribe/ member. (there are two links, so I separated them visually)
He's a barbarian with some tattoos of the Grandfather Tree on his body.

PS. @Ornux can we buy stuff for the money we got from background? I'd like to get Cook’s utensils and maybe some other minor stuff.

If there are things you get with you background that you don't want, you can use their full value to buy something else : if you don't need it, there's no reason you'd have bought them in the first place :)
For what you get from your class, you either use the lists or roll for gold and go shopping.

I forgot to write it down, but the fact that you guys are working together needs to make sense. Therefore, Evil alignments are out. Shouldn't be a problem, though.

Noted. Any necro build would be neutral in alignment. Indifferent to life in pursuit of undeath. I am thinking though he may have hatred and murderous intent for grave clerics that serve Kelemvor or similar. Basically adversarial to those that return the undead to death.

I just need some additional items that my PC should have :)

As a point of connection - Mee'hail (short version is [Mɪh] or Mih/Meeh) is on his Vision Quest. He is traveling the world to gain experience as per tribe's shaman directions. While he's not very knowledgeable about the civilized lands and a bit rough around the edges, Mih is sturdy and wise. He's also an honorable and straight-forward person, that treasures his friends.

He's also fond of cooking.

Since the premise is that we're tracking raiders - we might've been a group of travelers/mercenaries/adventurers that stumbled on aftermath of the raid and were hired on the spot?

I'll leave you guys figure out how you ended up together, but we'll start the game when you approach the mountain where the entrance is. At this point you'll just need to :
a) have a reason to be on that track
b) or have a reason to be with the group
Anyway, that reason needs to be strong enough to take risks and push the investigation in a creepy place

@RollingD20Stones I should mention that Oathbreaker isn't an available option for several reasons, the first being the level requirement. The other options looks good to me (my second D&D character was a cleric of Kelemvor... memories :') )

Haha I had a grave cleric of kelemvor too. Great fun to play especially from RP perspective.

In terms of oathbreaker yeah you are right. Anyways on further review it wasn't what I was after.

I think I am settled on a necro wizard.

Are you ok with using human variant traits (i.e. two ability score increased by 1, skill proficiency of choice, additional feat of choice)?

Also, for stats are we rolling 4d6 and dropping lowest for each stat?

@RollingD20Stones your character still need some adjustments (in your favor, cf PM)

I'm almost done writing the scenario, gathering maps, stats and other stuff. We'll get started on Monday as planned.
In the meantime, you guys should clarify how you know each other and why you are tracking the raiders (you can keep that info for yourself if you want, just make sure that it is clear). If some of you joined the party between Tar (the raided village) and the Suspicious Cave™, you'll have more info with my first post on Monday : in that case, just tell us that you'll join them at some point during the two days of tracking.

Get your swords, axes, staves and armors ready : things are about to get started!

Ok, let's talk about Mee'haīl :)
Born about twenty winters ago, he belongs to the Tree Ghost Tribe of Uthgardt. Father V'ladi-Mihr is a hunter and mother Nha'ta is a shaman. Mee'haīl has some elven blood in him from his mother's side, but it's either dormant or too thin to manifest.
After Mee'haīl's coming of age ceremony his mother received a "message" from spirits that her son has to leave The High Forest and journey across the lands to find his purpose.
Young Mee'haīl accepted this quest and set out on the road to the west.

I kept it simple :)

As a side note - imagine thick russian-"holywood" accent you hear in movies and shows. That's how Mee'haīl talks :)

He's also quite a foodie, likes to catch his prey, cook it and eat it. Also to see others enjoy his dishes.

Jacques Delacroix is a man of cunning, resourcefulness and violent savagery. Having grown up as an orphan in the slums, The Outskirts, of Baldurs Gate, Jacques had to rely on those traits to see him through to adulthood.

Jacques main enterprise from his teenage years until recently was as a gravedigger and undertaker in more recent years. However, behind this trade was a more sinister activity he frequently dabbled in, bodysnatching. There was a surprisingly large market in Baldurs Gate and along the Sword Coast for bodies of the dead to be studied or for other more distasteful practices. Jacques was good at his job and at finding buyers of the bodies he took charge of. The trade is full of cut throat brigands and provocateurs, with the industry's participants more than willing to murder and maim competitors. It was a life for the hardest of men with little conscience and must savagery.

One fateful night, Jacques was delivering three deceased bodies to a strange mortuary-like abode where his client, a powerful necromancer had taken residence. The necromancer, a warlock and wizard of growing renown, took a liking to Jacques, noticing something in the man that was both useful and promising. The necromancer introduced Jacques to the dark arts and to the Shadow-King. Jacques was at first wary of the necromancer and his words, but quickly saw the great powers he could hold. He came to admire the ambition of the Shadow-King and his plans for the world.

The necromancer taught him all he could over the next year in payment to Jacques for the delivery of bodies. Jacques learned to master a number of basic necromancy and other spells during that time. One night, the necromancer called Jacques to his side and set him a task that would set him on the path of the Shadow-King. That task was to find a night hag who lived in a nearby swamp and take her head as his own to augment his powers of necromancy and act as an arcane focus for him. Jacques did as he was bidden and after a brutal and horrific encounter with the night hag in her swamp he succeeded in removing her head from her body. Following a ritual he had learnt in his trade, he shrunk the hag's head and lashed her grey hair to his belt, his arcane focus now by his side.

He was badly injured but made it back to the necromancer's residence only to discover his master had vanished along with all his posessions. All that remained was a note instructing the apprentice necromancer wizard to traveled the sword coast and improve his studies and mastery of the dark arts. It said Jacques would know when the time was right to travel to the Warlock's Crypt and join his master by his side in service of the Shadow-King.

The other item left behind was a spellbook. A tome bound in stretched thick skin and comprised of thinner sheets of skin as its pages. burned into the first few pages in Infernal were the spells his master had taught him. Jacques took the spellbook and the note and left and began his pursuit and journey as instructed by his master.

Jacques now travels throughout the Sword Coast visiting cities and villages alike, plying his trade as a gravedigger and undertaker as well as assisting the populace with any tasks that require the use of his arts. He is indifferent to their struggles and assisting them does nothing but help him hone his arcane abilities and learn new ones, all so he might hasten his journey to the Warlock's Crypt.

Jacques is not evil in nature but will use people and situations to get what he wants. He cares little for anyone except those who pursue necromancy and even then jealously seeks to outdo them as is common amongst those of the dark arts. However, Jacues will actively seek to harm and murder anyone who is a cleric of Kelemvor and will likely be aggressive to those who simply follow the faith of the God. This is due to Kelemvor's belief in balance between life and death with a particular opposition to undeath. This stands in stark contrast to Jacques ambitions and life experiences and he has a deep hatred for that God and his faith and followers.

Jacques is modelled of Tom Hardy's character in Taboo. His savagery, voodoo-esque magic, and his cunning are all borrowed from that character as is his appearance, clothing and hat.

Jacques goes where the bodies fall, I would think Jacques was passing through the village of Tar looking for opportunity as a gravedigger/undertaker and to apply his arcane arts to help citizens with tasks. This quest appears to satisfy both his needs

Tianni was a young, 6-year old human girl with blond hair and light skin, who hailed from Neverwinter. One day, she was hit by a carriage while crossing the road by herself, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. 30 minutes later, while being carried to a pauper's grave, she awoke, without memories of her past life. She also woke up with a bifurcated tail, purple hair, and curved horns protruding from her head. The man moving her body freaked out and ran, and 6-year old Tianni walked for some time until a priestess collected her and took her into the convent of Selune.

Tianni is convinced that she is an angel from the goddess Selune, sent to extinguish evils, though her clergy peers did not believe this to be true, by the mark of Fierna that burns throughout her. On her 17th birthday, she bid the convent farewell to make her place in this world. She found an empty crypt, and after some time, she discovered it to be an ancient paladin's tomb. She found a set of chain mail (which she calls her holy armor), as well as a longsword, within the tomb. After a few days of being in this tomb, she found runes inscribed into the flat of the blade of her longsword, written in Infernal (the inscription says "Absolution").

Tianni the Demon Hunter is a young tiefling woman, about 25 years old, descended from Fierna. She is a fierce paladin of Selune, goddess of the moon, fighting as a vagrant soldier. Also, her devilish bloodline draws her to finding and exterminating demons, the arch-enemies of the devils that are replete in her bloodline. She tries to be a paragon of righteous judgment.

To make money, she collects bounties. She's pretty strong, pretty persuasive, and she's pretty good at figuring out if someone is lying, which helps in her line of work. Bounty hunting is just a way to pay for things she needs in order to snuff out evil, though. Her mission and passion is to hunt demons, and if there is a prize for doing so, she is happy to collect.

Her character is driven a bit by the "Fanatic" character from Greater Than Games' Sentinels of the Multiverse.

To those who haven't, make sure to chose personality traits to support your character concept. You can make them up if what is listed doesn't fit your concept, just try to be consistent with your background.

You meet a half-even man who many would describe as a starving artist. He has the natural good looks of an elf roughened around the edges by a life led perilously. You'd guess his age to be near 17. He has clear skin and a dashing three-day beard. His bedraggled look gives him an edge of danger; beneath his bruised eyes sparkles a brilliant blue that must surely melt the hearts of women, but with that charm flashes a fierce look of a boy who has been beaten more than once before. Under his pointed feathered cap is a tasseled mess of straw colored hair. His fashionable clothing is torn and peppered with dried blood. He is the very image of a tragic hero, a romantic. It takes little to imagine that many would stop to hear his story, taking pity on him and offering him succor.

Sedror stands about four feet tall with ruddy complexion and broad stature. At first glance he looks to be a hill dwarf, but a closer look shows a gleam of copper colored scales that cover his skin in most places. Though his short black beard remains, the hair on his head must have come out as the scales grew in. As did his eyebrows, arm, body and leg hair. The scales resemblance is that of a dragon, though you hazard a guess that they are thinner. Two bright blue eyes gaze back at you as you take in the sight of him. His features could be considered handsome, if you're into scales, and it feels like he radiates a grand power of his very own in the way he carries himself. Though heavy set, he seems very spry but lacks any impressive muscle mass. He appears to be very young for a dwarf making his own way in the world, perhaps not having yet reached his twentieth year.

Do you think you can find a way to create them as a team/duo? Intruducing them would be easier, and I like the dynamics of a preexisting duo that joins a larger group.

Akra Delmirev Black dragonborn cleric of Io or better yet the two sides of Io, Bahahut and Tiamat. The philosophy she follows is a loose neutrality believing in both law and chaos, but her own personality and bias leans her more towards lawful. To help with bias the followers are given a holy symbol of a coin with Bahamut on one side and Tiamat on the other. If it lands Bahamut up it is law that must be followed and if Tiamat chaos.

Embracing a neutral philosophy (that can apply to both Good and Bad) can lead to very rich Paladin concepts. However, I'm not sure that the very chaotic behavior driven by that coin (reminds me Two-Face in batman) is very fit to a paladin. Are you sure about that?

I'm gonna play Akra leaning more towards the good side and will be using her symbol when she feels like a judgement must be passed or when she feels like she needs guidance.

I've taken a good look at the Asgorath (Io), Bahamut and Tiamat wiki and I saw a legend that says when Asgorath was cut in half in the Dawn wars two sides of his personality where born Bahamut and Tiamat. That is the story my dragonborn religion follows and it would be a small following as I think it would probably be a taboo religion to the followers of Bahamut and Tiamat.

Sceen is ready to go.. Being much an underground hunter. Joining up with a Drow Ranger wouldn't be a problem. Perhaps we have hunted before together? It is what screen likes to do.

Akra Delmirev is a 17 year old Black Dragonborn, although she is an adult by dragonborn standards she is still young and can be naive sometimes. She spent her entire life inside her small temple and never ventured out until the day the Paladins of Bahumut came and destroyed her temple. The paladins believed that worshiping both Bahumut and Tiamat together was sinful and that her temple no more then cultists.
She fled into the underground passages under the temple which lead into the underdark with only a torch and a map made to help navigate the vast cave systems. About a day and a half into her travel of the underdark she was attacked by a Drow patrol and was nearly captured if not for a lone Drow named Dro who dispatched the patrol and agreed to journey with Akra out of the underdark.
