The most important rule
Dungeons and Dragons is a roleplaying game. As such, the only important rule is: you describe what your character does, the GM decides what rules are relevant and use them ; if it requires some dice rolling, you’ll be prompted to roll what is relevant.
But to speed things up in Play-By-Post you can roll some things you already know that need to be rolled, like your damage dice when you attempt to deal damage.
Describing an action (PbP style)
When you describe an action, make sure to give the following information:
* What you are trying to do (ex: intimidate the noisy thugs on the table behind me)
* How you are trying to do it (ex: break the table with my bare hands and threaten them with the chair)
One can succeed and the other fail, but I can’t guess what you don’t tell me.
And when you narrate what you are doing, try to go as far as possible without taking decisions for another character. Play-by-Post takes time with one or two posts a day, so let’s try to not slow down any further. For example, do not limit your post to:
"Froathus walks to the king and says: My name is Froathus, son of Goathus, hand and hammer of Moradin. I will help you with that dragons issue, but not for free."
Try to add more details about what you are trying to accomplish and how far you might go to avoid back-and-forth messages. You could simply add:
"He wants to get a 150GP payment for that job, with 50GP paid upfront. If he can, he’ll also try to get a new sword and a better armor. Froathus is ready to negotiate if needed, but won’t push it so much that the king would refuse his help."
Post formatting
I will use this formatting, and appreciate if you do it too:
Bold text is first person speach.
Italic is used to spell out your thoughts and for exposition texts.
Normal text for anything else.
Of course you are free to write as you please, but try at least to be consistent in style.
