Interest Check: 5e Ravnica Setting

Yep, I am a multi-faceted nerd who loves Magic the Gathering. After playing an Orzhov Syndicate based rogue/paladin in Curse of Strahd I have been contemplating a campaign where people find out which Guildhouse they belong to and their character is designed based on that particular flavour.

No Magic experience necessary to play. Just be prepared for a different setting from standard Greyhawk or Faerun settings. Ravnica would be most similar to Eberron.

Magic: What Guild Are You?

If this game interests you, take the quiz above and post your resulting guild. Based on that, I provide information about your guild, choices of races, then based on race: choices of classes, background options. Then we can talk about further character development.

We’ll be using all WOTC resources and we’ll be starting well above level 1; I think level 12. I’ll double check that later.

EDIT:
Read the quizzes and it answered my question.

I'm all about Ravnica. I have a Ravnica cube (http://www.cubetutor.com/viewcube/214). I'm working on a 5e adventure module set in Ravnica. I'd love to get to *play* instead of running a game, especially at level 8+.

Where do I sign?

*ahem* Take the quiz... ;)

Even if I already have a handful of character concepts at the ready, and I've run several games set in Ravnica (having dealt with character creation questions from my players, and run a number of NPCs), and I've built a cast of pregenerated Ravnica characters for my 5e adventure path?
Jun 25, 2018 7:55 pm
Boros on the first, Gruul on the second.

once you determine which guild you belong to, you’ll be able to see if you have something to suit your result.

Excellent and fairly consistent. So, are you leaning toward a caster or martial type? Battalion or Clan?
Jun 25, 2018 8:14 pm
I'm still confused. Are you asking what guild, as a human player, I would belong to? Or can I just pick a Ravnican character concept I want to play and submit that?

I should probably mention that while I've been playing 5e since the Next playtest, I have very little knowledge of M:TG, so I'm kind of doing all my Ravinca research on the fly, haha. I'd probably lean toward a battalion caster like a war wizard or war domain cleric.
Jun 25, 2018 8:34 pm
I took the quiz and got Izzet.
Jun 25, 2018 8:35 pm
I also am very interested in this idea. I am missing something though, previous comments make it sound like there are two quizzes, but I only see one linked to in the second comment. Is there a second?

I did the first one and got the Simic Combine, which is exactly what I expected and is/was my favorite from those blocks, but Golgari Swarm is a close second. Azorius Senate is also appealing though...

From Boros, the domains would be Forge and Light. Wizard schools would be Evoker and Conjurer? Does that sound good?

Races would include:

Humans
Dwarves
Minotaurs
Aasimar
Genasi (fire/air)
Aarakocra

Human
Dragonborn (red or blue)
Genasi (air, or weird = combine two opposites for a weird)
Lizardfolk (called "Viashino")
Ogres

Lots of variety so far. This is fun already!!
Jun 25, 2018 9:34 pm
If you chose Golgari:

Drow (called Devkarin)
Humans
Tiefling
Hobgoblin
Goliath
Genasi (earth)

No elves for the Simic? That was a pretty well represented race in almost all the guilds, but specifically in the green ones.

Not that I mind, a water gensai would be fun to play. Wizard, Warlock (Guild-pact perhaps), or Druid.

Just an oversight. Missed some Simic races. I'll edit eventually.
Jun 25, 2018 9:51 pm
I'll look at it later, but I was looking to play lizardfolk ancestral barbarian, or eldiritch knight (alternatively sorcerer with a different race, maybe wild mage but only if people are fine with the tables.)
Jun 25, 2018 10:36 pm
OK, so I'm leaning toward Hill Dwarf Forge Cleric. What are you thinking for stats?

The Viashino barbarian is particularly appropriate for Gruul.

You mentioned starting around level 8. Is that a good place to target when piecing a character together?

For Simic, Sorcerer would be more appropriate than Wizard. Being about mutants and such.

We’ll begin at level 12. You are representing your guild on a special mission.

I’ll assume we have the critical mass to make launching this game worthwhile. I’ll create it and invite those who do the quiz and want to play.

I'm going to withdraw my interest from this game because I find the restrictions on player choices for their character's race/class to be really off-putting. It's one thing to provide suggestions to players who are unfamiliar to the setting and ask for help, and one can certainly provide some guidance for what is appropriate for the tone you are trying to strike for this game, but to outright deny player choices in realizing their character concepts is not going to lead to a fun gaming experience.

I would call it "filtering", but if the term off-putting works for you, I'm happy to oblige.

I am planning to be the sole referee in the game, by the way. So, that position is already filled, by me.

Thanks for your interest!

Cruvis, you handled that in a classy way!

I am a big fan of M:tG. Just wanted to salute your excellent idea :)
;) Well, you could always try taking the quiz. Don't you at least want to know which guild you belong to?

If there's space I'd love to play.
Jul 5, 2018 5:52 pm
You can play! :) please check out the Planeswalker Guide to Ravnica (Dimir)

Races include:

Humans
Tiefling
Dragonborn (black)
Changeling
Skulker
True Ghoul
Vampire

If you come up with other racial options, do not hesitate to ask.

Cheers!

Classes tend to include Rogues, Assassins, Necromancers, but again, reading up on the guild is likely to generate terrific and unique ideas for a character.

Enjoy the process!
Jul 6, 2018 5:37 pm
Salutations! I took your quiz, and got the Orzhov Syndicate. I'm thinking a Mastermind Rogue would be awesome to play if you have space?
Jul 7, 2018 1:53 am
I think so. Let’s go ahead with it. Racial options: aasimar,, human, shade, vampire
Jul 7, 2018 9:53 am
Dragonborn would work too as a kind of gargoyle.
