At character creation I was torn between having a variety of spells and selecting as many Transmutation spells as I could, to create more opportunities to use my transfusions. I realize now I really should have just gone 100% transmutation to get the most out of this subclass.

Yeah, it definitely rewards casting Transmutation spells. At level 6 there's some draw towards Evocation as well.

It is obvious on even a casual reading that the subclass relies heavily on the party having at least one tank. It is important for all party members, not just the wizard, to understand that. Luckily, this party is not short on tanks!

I think there are a few different things you can do with it. For example, put charges on a squishier companion in order to discourage enemies from targeting them. Once enemies understand that you've got this sort of retribution, they probably aren't going to want to trigger it. You could possibly even make a melee transfusion wizard (mountain dwarf?) who buffs themself up with transmutation spells and charges.
