New Faces, New Places

Three weeks, it's been nearly three weeks since house Tharashk approached each of you. Offering a second chance, the decision was obvious. "Burning Heart, middle city. Meet your contact on the balcony by sunset. Don't try to run, we'll know." Is all the armor-clad human said, his neck glowing ever so slightly. "Now leave." Leading you to the streets of Wroat, you will have to take the lightning rail to meet the deadline. Mid-morning with only partial clouds, the station is sparsely occupied with travelers. Before long the lightning rail arrives at the station, the hulking machine comes to a halt as passengers exit the carts.

Paying the fare, everyone is seated in standard class. The accommodations are much comfier then anything prison had: agreeable seating, hot meals flavored with Prestidigitation, and a bunk in the sleeper cart; it's almost enough to make you forget all your troubles. A few curious passengers -mostly kids- steal quick glances at the group, perhaps never seen a Warforged or Goliath in the flesh.

Halfway along the King's Forest, a casual observer can spot the massive towers of Sharn on the horizon. Many stories and many embellishments have reached your ears, regardless of previous visits. Some guards claim the Sharn watch ideal for protection work, if you don't end up dead. Prisoners have their own dubious take on the city, claiming with the right resources anyone can simply vanish in the lower cities. Whether any of this is to be believed is up to you, for now the quiet whirring of the lightning rail gives a chance to collect your thoughts.

Go and see the world his tribe had told him. After his heroics during the brief, but intense, invasion of their lands, the elders had decided that he fit some great prophecy or something (or they just wanted the young troublemaker out for a time; he never got a straight answer there), and sent him out into the world. If only they could see him now; press-ganged into something, as an escape from prison. Some hero he was turning out to be.

Trying to shake his poor mood, Vimak looks over the others sharing the accommodations with him. Dent he recognized from that bar brawl not too long ago.

Speaking low, so that his voice doesn't carry beyond their area, "So, is that how jobs are offered out here? Seems a bit dramatic to me."

"Only the jobs too dangerous for regular recruitment."
Bright's voice sounds world weary, with just the lightest trace of playfulness, hinting at his basic nature, heavily masked by the weight of his obsession.
His opinion delivered, Bright throws a look in equal parts resentful and comradely in Dent's direction, sighs a little, then falls silent again.

Dangerous! Hah! The human man, who appears to be in his mid thirties and has been quiet up until this point, let’s out the first laugh he’s had in over a decade. You think for a second that we aren’t being sent on a one way trip your just fooling yourselves.

"Nothing is as it was and nothing is as it seems since the war ended. Jobs are simple distractions."
Dent eyes the car, studying each stranger and mutters to themselves. "Human, distance 15 feet, neck and shoulder stance indicates training in armor. Threat low. Khoravar, distance 25 feet, leather armor under cloak, daggers likely. Threat low"

Dents eyes shift to the Goliath, seeming to only just focus on their companions now. "That night in the cell ...did you tell me that your tribe managed to avoid the war? How so for one hundred years?"
Nov 20, 2018 1:02 am
"For the most part, my people live high enough in the mountains that breathing is difficult if you aren't adapted to it. We're a several days hike from the edge of nowhere, and it is rare that someone accidentally wanders in. However, we aren't exactly safe. The things that can reach us, are rarely friendly." With his last comment, Vimak absent-mindedly rubs at an old scar on his arm. "And we do trade, some. Mostly, we keep to ourselves though."

"Losing ones existence for the right reason is all one can wish for. There are too many senseless ways to go. Staying and fighting with your team, with you friends.... even if it is a loosing battle... that brings meaning to the meaningless." Dent turns an expressionless face towards Bright. "It seems we are all on the same team for now."
Nov 20, 2018 11:38 pm
"'And death came for him in his sleep, for he knew otherwise would risk a fight.' I believe that was the best prayer for the dead I've ever heard. But to drag the conversation away back to the now, what do you think we will be doing? I've never been this far, so it can't be that I know someone here. And my skills mostly revolve around using my sword."
Nov 21, 2018 1:31 am
It seems obvious that there are a diverse set of skills brought together...we each will serve a purpose. For what? Fink shrugs apathetically, I guess we should feel fortunate if we can find out before we are killed...or worse.
Nov 21, 2018 2:22 am
I push my greasy hair back. Death comes for us all, it’s the only thing we have in common. But death only comes when it is your time. My black hair falls back out of place, covering my piercing green eyes.

"I find myself at a loss, I am unfamiliar with the reference we were given to Burning Heart. I agree that whatever we find we must do will not be ideal. We are walking into the battlefield blind." Dent replies to Fink.
Dent then murmurs to themselves as they scan the area again, a halfling enters from the dining car. "Halfling, low strength, nimble, city dress, possible Boromar agent, threat Medium"
Nov 21, 2018 6:55 pm
Passing the time with speculation, Sharn grows ever larger as the lightning rail makes it past the first tower. After a few more minutes the lightning rail pulls along a bridge into a massive building, the Terminus rail station located in Lower Tavick's landing. Exiting the Lightning rail, it is immediately apparent how busy everyone is. Passengers and workers alike walk at a brisk space, filling the air with conversation, odd scents, and a few shifty looks. Looking up you see large walkways, you estimate 50 feet up or higher. The sound of music mixed with business can be heard, but no obvious means of switching "levels" is apparent.

Moving through the crowds you find the exit, evidence by the sunlight pouring through a large doorway. Outside a skycoach ascends to the middle city, and a few bored looking street vendors offer their wares to weary travelers and tourists alike. Not yet sundown, there is plenty of time left. How do you proceed?
OOC:
For quick reference Lower Tavick is in the lower city. You can use any skill/proficiency going forward to solve a problem if it can be reasonably applied (I'm a big fan of open ended encounters, XOSkel10 reminded me to say this in his game.)
Nov 21, 2018 10:28 pm
As they depart the station, Dent scans the busy ward. "Hundreds of threats, few allies" they think aloud. Dent scans the clouds for any soldiers, specifically Cyran soldiers, warforged better yet. "As I said team, I have never heard of Burning Heart. Unless any of you know what it is, we must seek guidance. Keep an eye for friendly common folk... laborers, cartkeepers, anyone who may have no love for this place."

Dent can't spot any soldiers of Cyre, if so they conceal their colors well. The only Warforged in sight is behind a counter marked "Information" in common, the mark of Orien emblazoned on their shoulder.

Fink your memory of the city is hazy at best, the lesser walked alleyways and old contacts seem naught but a distant memory. The good news is public street signs are available to help point someone in the right direction.
Nov 22, 2018 5:49 pm
Fink keeps his eyes open to locate a sky coach or other means to ascend to their destination.
Nov 22, 2018 6:28 pm
Bright approaches the nearest vendor and in a warm, welcoming tone greets him. "Excuse me sir, could you tell me the fastest way to the middle city, apart from the sky coaches? We have an urgent appointment at the Burning Heart."
Nov 22, 2018 9:47 pm
Walking up to a vendor marked Sharn Inquisitive with newspapers on display, your greeting falls on the older elven merchant who is rifling through the current issue. "Hmm? Sky coach is quickest. Suppose you could take the the lift, just a few street downs." Taking the time to pry his eyes from the paper, he stares at you, as if contemplating his next words. Speaking in a low voice he continues "I wouldn't recommend it however, your galifer's look ripe for the picking."
Nov 23, 2018 2:36 pm
Dent mutters aloud, "Elf, likely older than the war, possible wealth of information. Not likely to be Valenar selling newspapers, threat level low".
Dent steps closer to the booth and fishes in his pouch for some coin. "I would like to purchase the todays paper. Thank you for your help, the lift should serve us well."
OOC:

Nov 23, 2018 4:15 pm
"Your galifer's look ripe for the picking" Vimak thinks to himself. What does that even mean? Coming to the conclusion that it sounded like the vendor was warning them against thieves, he makes sure that his meager coin pouch is tucked away where no one can get to it.

"Fair enough. Should we ask for better directions, or head to the middle district first, and hope that once we get closer, we'll be more likely to find someone who knows what we're talking about?" Noting Vimak’s interest n the paper, they read aloud a story from page two while walking, and keeping half an eye on the path.
"Headline: Dozens Claim to Have Seen Lantern-Bearer.
SHARN—The mysterious—and some say folkloric—figure known as the Lantern-Bearer of Keshaware has been seen in Sharn this week at least four times, eyewitnesses said. "He had these dirty white robes, a long gray beard, and tousled hair," said Maretha Ducain, a cobbler from the Underlook district. "The lantern was covered in jewels—so much so that the jewels themselves seemed to be glowing. And just like in the woodcarvings, he has the lantern on the end of a staff, and he walks all bent over."
Tales of the Lantern-Bearer of Keshaware are at least centuries old, said Charral Meers, a professor of history at Morgrave University."

Walking along for but a minute, the view of a larger skycoach comes into view. Standing at about 50 feet long with a lovely gold trim complemented by smooth dark wood, it's as though it was handcrafted to catch everyone's eye. "We will be leaving in 3 minutes, come aboard any and all to La velvet sail! Sharn's finest way to travel, only one gold piece!" Shouts a regal-looking human from the bow, his high quality attire and prestigious accent make him stand out among the passerby's. "We will be stopping at Tradefair followed by Skysedge Park, just in time for a romantic evening walk!" He winks at a passing couple with his last statement.

Beyond this spectacle you see a few compact and simpler looking skycoach's, meant for small groups or couples. Most of the 'captains' are reading or eating, as if waiting for the velvet sail to leave.

Nov 26, 2018 5:29 am
On the skycoach proper stands a gruff orc who moves in front of Aren, crossing his arms while blocking access. "Oh did you now? And when was that?" He says in an low intimidating voice.
Nov 26, 2018 4:07 pm
"Oh, this lantern bearer sounds interesting. Local legend type, or think it might be an actual thing?", he asks Dent, as he hands over a gold piece for his fare.

Moving in behind the group, an older cloaked gentlman quietly hands over the requested fare.

Good day sonny. He says meekly as he passes by.
Nov 28, 2018 7:01 am
"Just get on." The orc responds, already looking away from Fink.

it isn't long before the regal human practically screams. "Prepare for departure!" A flurry of activity follows, the few members it takes to operate such a craft pull back the gangplank, secure their collections, and bring a small crystal into a glass lantern which connects to the skycoach. "First stop, Tradefair. Captain Stellard of house Orien, at your service." Standing at the captain's wheel, the Stellard pulls a lever; a flash of blue blinds everyone as the crystal begins to glow and crackle within it's housing. Some of the passengers lose their footing as the skycoach begins to ascend, weaving through the numerous towers or other such aircraft.

While the other passengers are taking in the interesting mix of smells and sights of the lower city from the safety of a skycoach, the denizens look at you with envy before going about their day.

Four Bodies Found in Burned Carriage

SHARN—City Watch are investigating as homicide the burned-out shell of a carriage found at dawn Zor on northern Razzell Street in the Granite Halls district.

Watch sergeant Garrick Draum said four bodies—three adult male humans and one female shifter—were seated in the carriage. Traces were attached to the carriage, but no horses were present, he said.

The carriage itself was badly charred but cool to the touch. The flames didn’t spread to any nearby buildings, Draum said.

"I find it a little hard to believe that, even in the wee hours of the morning, no one saw a carriage fire in the middle of the street," Draum said. Shops along Razzell Street—mostly antiquities dealers—were shuttered, and the street gets little night traffic.

The Blackened Book branch of the Sharn Watch is trying to ascertain the identity of the passengers in the carriage, Draum said. And the City Watch is trying to find eyewitnesses who saw the carriage or the fire; those with information should speak to the City Watch on patrol in Granite Halls or speak to a sergeant on duty at the Watch’s Sword Point garrison.

Two of these strange figures approach from the rear, wielding a sword in one hand and a wand in the other. Climbing from the bow stands another, defiantly pointing their own blade at Stellard. "Surrender your stolen goods if you wish to live 'Captain'! Don't think you would get away so easily!" Stunned for a few seconds at this intrusion, Stellard tries to sound confident, but his words are laced with fear. "Now I-I don't know who you brigands think you are, but I will not stan-stand for this!" He pulls out a rapier, pointing back at the accuser.

The passengers meanwhile, are overcome with terror; screaming and trampling on the deck as they attempt to escape from these rogues. Some are already sliding down a ladder to the cargo hold while others run into the captain's quarters. The thieves don't pay the passengers any mind, firmly fixated on Stellard and his muscle.

Only Bright is injured, the others deftly block the swift strikes. Quickly dashing back, the skulkers disengage with unmatched speed to spread themselves out.

Vimik's greatsword cleanly cuts through one of the skulkers before they get the chance, dropping him instantly onto the wooden floor.

A fireball precariously lobs over the remaining passengers, striking another skulker during their retreat.

Charging forth up the stairs, Dent slams his hammer against the first wandslinger he spots. Knocking him to the ground from the force "WAI-" is all he sputters before you strike once more, killing him. "Take that you scoundrels!" Jeers Stellard. With his newly empowered blade he tries an attack of his own, but is out of range.

Weaving the blast through allies, it almost misses your target in the crossfire. "San is down! Focus on those-HNGH!" The wandslinger barks orders just in time to feel the blast connect with his chest. Holding his wand to the sky a current of blue wind sweeps through him, his body begins to mesh with ambient colors. Vimik you notice a similar effect on the wandslinger standing at the forecastle. "Forget the goods, kill em' all!"

An ominous chime fills the air, the wandslinger's eyes go wide before shifting back to normal. "What the..." He says under his breath.

Dent's hammer swings harmlessly through the air, the wandslinger ducking under the blow. Looking back you notice the skulker likewise sidesteps your attack.

"Watch where you're swinging that thing!" Shouts the orc guard angrily, content with protecting Stellard.

Stunned for the briefest of moments when the skulker discovers the poison had no effect is all you need to you close the distance, your swing cuts him to the ground. Barely breathing, there is great anger in his eyes. "Coward."

Ignoring his insults Vimik you deliver the killing blow to the weakened skulker.

"Why do you persist?!" Yells the wandslinger, beginning to lose his nerve. "Burn!" he thrusts his wand out, shooting a stream of fire at the three at the captains wheel. "NO!" Shouts the orc, maneuvering to protect Stellard from the ever deadly flames, taking the brunt of the attack. "Get back you devils!" Stellard does his best to remain unshaken, crouching with hands blocking his head from the fire.

Quick on his feet Aren sees his spell take effect immediately, wandslinger and nearby skulker suddenly stop moving entirely, their knees buckling until they pass out cold on the hardwood floor.

The remaining two enemies give each other a quick look before turning to escape. A deadly arrow and Dent's spectral hammer strikes the skulker as he turns his back, knocking him down the stairs. Standing at the bow, the lone wandslinger pulls out his climbing apparatus. "Your Tarkanan friends cannot protect you forever Stellard! We will take what is due!"
OOC:
Okay, Vimik attacked skulker 2 first (and gets the kill) so I'll redirect Fink's attack to skulker 4 (Let me know if you would like something different.)

Planting the claw into the hull, the wandslinger begins to descend, tearing small bits of wood. Before climbing below he shakes his head, swatting an imaginary enemy before slumping over, simply falling overboard. From below a scream is heard, echoing through the air.

The skycoach is a disaster: the deck is riddled with corpses of enemy and ally alike, paint and wood scratched, bloodied, or blackened, and a horrid smell lingers in the air. Any remaining passengers who are still above deck cower in fear, praying silently for this horror to pass.

This spectacle has garnered a few curious onlookers from the surrounding towers and bridges, but soon everyone is in a rush to leave as a siren wails in the distance. "Is everybody alright?" Stellard asks, wiping away sweat from his brow. "I hope you don't mind if we take a quick detour, I'd rather not be present when the Watch arrive." Not waiting for an answer, he pilots the skycoach away from the direction of the sirens, glancing back with a nervous expression.
"Stellard, we need to drop off the pass-"
"Yes I know! First we need to get somewhere safe."
"...Fine."
Dent and Aren overhear Stellard arguing with his remaining guard in a hushed tone.

Something near the Burning Heart would be best for my team."

Speaking of, Jak why don't you tell the others below it's safe." Stellard tries to steer the conversation as well as he steers the skycoach. Giving a short nod the orc shambles to the hatch, muttering "This never happened when we stuck to the schedule."

With a group consensus more or less made the remainder of the trip is relatively peaceful, the prisoner looks relieved the interrogation is over. The sky turns pink as you soar through the sky, traffic becoming less of an issue as the day comes to an end.

"We have arrived!" Stellard shouts with a strained flourish, landing the skycoach whilst the Orc extends the gangplank. Immediately the passengers step out with hurried steps and hushed whispers, not bothering to give any tips. "Now, kindly leave." Stellard points to the street, looking at everyone impatiently.

It takes a second to regain your footing as you step on the hard stone, your 'sea' legs readjusting. Finding yourself on a small side street, it's fairly evident why people call it Tradefair: businesses of every kind stand side-by-side in every building, not an inch of real estate is wasted. You count no less then three tailors, two specialty wine shops, and a gem cutter which specializes in imitation Khyber crystals, just with a cursory glance. Not far ahead the street becomes a plaza, and the sound of music mixed with heavy foot traffic.

A destination in mind thanks to Bright, the moving crowds of the plaza leave little room for personal space as you make a path. Knowing such a motley group could attracted undue attention, choosing to walk separately seems quite effective, anyone who meets your gaze doesn't consider a second look to a singular stranger.

Alexia's road Reads a sign as you make it to the bridge. Standing just over 20 feet wide, the foot traffic has decreased considerably, majority of it being civilians looking for a place to relax after a days work. Everbright lanterns hanging above the bridge begin to crackle to life, offering ample amber flames while the sun disappears over the horizon, and a light breeze is in the air.

Ahead stands a two story building made of wood and stone, a hanging sign illustrated with fire in the shape of a bleeding heart swings gently. Above the entrance is a small balcony where patrons seem to be quietly enjoying a meal, the sound of laughter and music emanates from within. Before you can even enter the building however a massive creature stands guard by the door: A goliath, his arms are crossed with a menacing look adorning his face, daring anyone to approach him.

As soon as Bright opens the door to enter, I recall my raven. I approach the goliath.

What sort of place is this?
Feb 8, 2019 7:57 pm
As Bright approaches brimming with confidence, the Goliath crosses his arms, looking down on him literally. With a deep authoritative voice he answers Aren's question with his gaze firmly planted on Bright. "If you don't know, you ain't supposed to be here. Who're you s'posed to be?"
Feb 8, 2019 9:22 pm
I think you'll find that I'm supposed to be here, regardless of my knowledge of the place.
Feb 8, 2019 10:48 pm
"We have not been here before ourselves, but given the urgency of the summons we received I had thought the summons would have ensured our arrival was expected."
Feb 9, 2019 2:16 am
Dent steps up to the group at the door I believe we are expected by someone on the balcony above us. Dent gestures above with the butt end of their hammer.
Feb 10, 2019 12:32 am
The Goliath contemplates your words, looking up towards the balcony briefly. "Hmm...I suppose you do fit the description, somewhat. Very well, any trouble and the Watch will get involved. I also require you to surrender your arms, as a precaution." He moves out of the way and holds his hand out expectantly, lips forming the edge of a grin.
Feb 10, 2019 4:28 am
I hand him my mace, crossbow, and daggers.
Feb 10, 2019 8:10 pm
The older man approches the goliath and begins pulling out several daggers, swords and a crossbow.
Feb 10, 2019 8:48 pm
Dent eyes the Goliath, looks past him and into the building and glances up at the balcony. They unhook their crossbow and hand it over mutttering under their breath Goliath, threat level high, without weapons best to disengage and seek to outwit foe.
Dent then hands over the hammer, head first. You may hold my weapons, but I prefer to keep my arms attached. It is difficult to maneuver without them. Dent pauses waiting to see if this bouncer gets the joke. Ha ha, get it? I can function with out my arms unlike you so it is funny.

Rolling his eyes at Dent's 'humour', Bright hands over his crossbow and daggers.
Feb 11, 2019 9:40 pm
Weapons in hand, he gestures with his head while moving out of the way. "No trouble."

Finally entering the establishment, the atmosphere changes from the crowded streets. Wooden booths seat patrons who judging by their clothes possess a measure of wealth. They talk and laugh about this or that while downing glasses of ale, wine, or partaking in succulent dishes, the rich smells reaching your noses. Musicians gather around a hearth with an unusual object burning brightly at the far end of the building, taking special care not to obscure the sight. In the corner near a stairwell a lone figure sits alone in a half circle booth, her gaze meeting everyone clear as day. Natural green skin with pointed ears, hair tied in intricate braids. She wears sturdy clothes in shades of grey and black, a short sword with a red and gold emblem adjusted to her waist.

Your attention is drawn away as a half-elf gets your attention, brown curly hair and an apron with stains adorning it. With a warm smile he continues. "Welcome friends to The Burning Heart! Now don't tell me you've been here before, I know a traveler when I see one!" He wags his finger comically. "Right then, would you like booth seating? Perhaps something outdoor before darkness overtakes the city?"

Dent moves over to Bright. I still do not respect a deserter, but I respect your training. Here, take this. Dent hands Bright a sending stone. I want to evaluate the security upstairs, there may have been someone on the balcony that is of concern. That half orc over there may, or may not be our contact. I will let you know if I see trouble. Dent points to the green skinned woman in the booth and turns to the half elf. Opening the door leads to a room lit by candles, their blue flame providing little luminescence. Tables are arranged around a small stage where a single tiefling is playing the viola, beside him on a pedestal is a lavish portrait with flowers decorating the frame depicting a dwarvern woman in a golden dress before an auditorium, her eyes full of victory. It is a somber tune that comes from the violist, one which the 20 in audience look rather heartbroken over.

Your entrance isn't exactly graceful, and the stomps of your metal feet less so. Walking along the tables to the balcony exit you spot no less then 10 upset faces glaring at you, not counting the ones who do it behind your back. Even the musician looks up at you, but isn't stumbled by this intrusion. As you reach for the door handle you feel a presence right behind you, and a whisper. "Go out. Gently."

Two other couples are quietly talking, and you spot Aren's raven on the railing who watches the scene. the mysterious stranger walks in front of you, revealing the cloaked figure from before who sits down at an empty table. The inside of their hood is pitch black, obscuring their face. "Do you know why we're here?" Their voice is in a word: androgynous, as if they took care to mask it.

If you are with the others inside, it seems you are here to remember someone lost. Is that what you ask? Dent pauses briefly then barrels on.
