Through the Hornwood

OOC:
This thread will journal the first leg of the journey, from leaving Gorna to arrival at Fort Nurok. It entails general travel over heavily used travel routes, passing through well-established towns and villages as well as a bit of travel through the ever-dangerous forests and hills and lowlands of the Barrier Peaks. While I do not intend to drag out the travel, I do encourage you all to engage in a bit of role play as we go. I'll be posting the 'getting underway' post sometime tonight or tomorrow, depending on if my mood over the Steelers loss to the Broncos improves. :D

Hraefn kept to his cart for the most of part out of Gorna, and typically as they passed through the various towns and villages along their journey. In the wide open though, across open stretches of fields and hills, Hraefn made himself useful by taking on a shape he was much more comfortable with. When the sky was clear and the horizon could be seen miles away, the man of nature would soar into the sky as a giant eagle or vulture, often flying ahead as far as the eye could see, before returning to the fold, sometimes bearing small fruit for the horses, who gradually got used to his expeditions, or small game for variety at mealtimes. On denser routes through the forest, he took the form of a huge wolf or a majestic elk, as befitting the terrain, so as not to lose sight of the party in the foliage. What was notable in all this was another of his tokens, this one appearing to be a gem of some petrified wood, that hovered around his person in whichever animal form he took.

Waterday, 5 Coldeven 580 CY
The day is partially overcast and the winds light as your group sets out along the northern road from Gorna. The cool spring air invigorates the senses, adding a bit of excitement and anticipation to your journey. It is still early, with the sun only 2 hours into its trek, but already the city is alive with movement as people rush to and fro. The markets are in full swing, and traders arrive and leave as the blood of mercantilism flows freely across Geoff.

To the south and west, the iconic Russet Tower can be seen sitting high on a hilltop, its walls home to the mage Aedan and his family as well as a small contingent of the Duke's forces that protect the lands from the occasional breech by humanoid invaders. Ahead, the wide road follows one of the many tertiary rivers crossing the lowlands, twisting and turning through the hills and forests.

The wagons travel single file, with Hraefn periodically occupying the rear of the front wagon, while the rest of you move to and fro as you desire, sometimes ahead, sometimes behind, sometimes stopping to take in the beauty of the Geoff landscape, all the while moving along a most uneventful path towards Oytmeet. As the sun began its final path westward, dipping behind the tallest of the peaks, the fortified town comes into view.

The walls around Oytmeet are of stone, capped with wooden structures periodically, providing cover for those who may be along the wall-walk. A barbican of two towers flank the entry gate, which stands open and inviting, and even at this hour you can see people moving in and out. Nestled in the valley formed by two long hills, the river road runs through the town and can be seen exiting the far side. Additional roads lead off in other directions, including one to the south and west. Thin streams of smoke exit the numerous buildings within the walls as well as the many farmhouses dotting the landscape, giving a feel of peace and tranquility all around.

"That way'll take us t' Grasmere, your lordship." Elavain says to Caedwyn, indicating the road to the south and west leading from Oytmeet.

"Others both lead t' Lea, though the east road takes us farther into the lowlands. Plenty of farms 'n' the like, not much t' be seen, though." he adds, urging his horse forward and down the hill toward town.

Cædwyn strokes his pointed beard keeping pace with Elavain, "Hmm, no reason not to take the most direct route there. Unless you're suggesting that the wagons would make better time upon the eastern route? Otherwise I say me make for Grasmere. A night here in Oytmeet would do us well though I think. Might as well make use of the inns before we're out in the wilderness for gods know how long."

"Aye, sire. Diamond Spider is fair, if a bit more costly. The Grey Minstrel, if you wish t' remain frugal with your coin." says Elavain as he rides ahead.

My vote is the Minstrel, I happen to like my coin. I say, patting my horse.

Cædwyn finds the very idea of frugality distasteful. "Ahh em... Well with such a large company I'm sure these small inns wouldn't possibly be able to fit us all in together. I'll spend the night at the Spider myself. If I'm not mistaken there may be a few of us who might be more comfortable outside of the town walls even..." He spurs his horse ahead as well, not wanting the scout to get too far ahead of him.

"I believe I'll join you at the Spider." Ilwyn says, trotting alongside Cædwyn. "I'll need room for my retainers, anyhow. That said, we should at least come together for a meal or drinks. This is no short journey, so it would be best to become acquainted with each other."
Nov 26, 2018 11:14 pm
"I suppose I can afford one fancy meal if we're to be on the road a while," Etna reasons, as if bargaining with herself. "Why not, then? To the Diamond Spider it is! A bit of a sinister name, don'tya think?

Hraefn looked up from his position in the wagon at Caedwyn's pointed suggestion that not all might enjoy the luxuries of a proper inn. Good ser Caedwyn is correct in that regard. Nonetheless, I shall join you at dinner. It is necessary we get to know each other, as lady Ilwyn has observed, " Hraefn said unironically.

While I go choose to save coin when possible, I also recognize the idea of safety in numbers. Do I’ll join you at the Spider, besides, higher cost generally means better alcohol and easier marks. I smile as I continue to pet Ghost.

Cædwyn, grins broadly. Excellent! It sounds like we'll have a grand feast then. An auspicious way to begin any adventure for sure. To commemorate the event I'll buy the first round." Glancing at Merriweather he adds, "Just be sure not to cause any trouble. I fear we won't be able to tarry for party members who find themselves incarcerated."

Smiling big, I look at Caedwyn. I've never been arrested in my life, good sir.
Nov 27, 2018 3:45 pm
Laughing loudly he says, "Good Man." loud enough for everyone to hear. Leaning in close to the rogue he whispers something to him.

I wink at Caedwyn and continue on.

Bram, remaining silent as he has through most of their travel, follows the other to the Spider. His face maintains a dour look throughout.

The setting sun brings with it a slight chill as you all make your way down the hill. From here, you can see that the town lays at the confluence of two rivers, exiting the town as the slightly larger water way that you have been following since leaving Gorna.

"The Blue Oyt and White Oyt rivers there, " says Elavain to any who might be interested. "Come t'gether to make the Oyt Avon as they call it. Oyt River to those who prefer Common tongue. Town is fair enough; good, solid walls and plenty of trade with the dwarves and elves alike. If you look there, you can see the tri-bridge. Had to build it to help with the traders and caravans that come 'round during festival season. Hard t' believe a town like this can swell to thrice its numbers during that time."

Looking out across the town, you can, indeed, see that there are three distinct bridges crossing over the Oyt River along the north edge of town. Across the bridges, you see they all lead to roads that eventually merge into a single path headed north.

At the gates, you are greeted by the town guard who inspect your wagons as well as yourselves before granting you entry through the gates. Atop the walls can be seen periodic patrols of three or four men walk by, their eyes trained outward toward the surrounding countryside. Inside of town, the chill of the air is blunted by the closed in nature of the town. The road is well worn and pitted in places where the ground was at one point muddied and then hardened into a pot hole of sorts.

Elavain leads you straight to the center of town, where a large building stands. Over the stout, oak door swings a large octagonal sign depicting a glistening arachnid framed against a dark web pattern. Along the bottom of the sign reads The Diamond Spider - S. Braz, Proprietor. Already the place looks busy, as bright lights spill out through the heavy, leaded windows and main door and the sound of stomping on wood accompanies a boisterous song.

Despite its walls and stacked housing, Oytmeet fell more pleasantly on the ranger's senses than the city Gorna. It hadn't lost all its charm to the encroaching bricks. It did however, provide ample amenties, something Etna could not say about Fairwall. "Nice here, in't it?" she says, holding open the door of the tavern for her compatriots.
Nov 27, 2018 11:07 pm
"'Tis. Quaint." Ilwyn noted as she hitched her steed and entered the tavern, bowing to Etna on account of her politeness. Once inside, she stood and assessed the crowd - Looking for any obvious regulars, any who look as if they might cause trouble, as well as keeping a particularly keen eye out for any notably attractive patrons.

"I like the looks of this place." She announced to her companions. "Just the right kind of atmosphere."
