I think given the events happening right now and Zenithral making his speech that he does not have time to approach either Ulbrec or Crale to warm them about Pomab before stuff happens.
The gates explode inward, raining debris upon those standing closest. Immediately the enemy begins to pour inside - a vanguard of orcs and goblins, along with a handful of well-armored ogres wielding enormous metal-studded clubs.

Toward the rear of this group, a one-eyed orc priest chants a war song, raising high a black iron spear still stained with the blood of those from Lonelywood.

What's more, a frost giant steps right up to the palisade wall and looms over it, icy boulder in hand as it searches for a target to smash.

So some things to unpack here...

The goblins, orcs, and ogres below each represent a group (with the number present in parenthesis). Against these foes there is "spill damage", so you attack the group as a whole and every drop of damage is applied to the total. You can figure out about how many you've killed by dividing the total hp in a group by the hp of an individual monster within it (A goblin has 5, an orc has 10, and an ogre has 40). Feel free to describe the awesome feeling of wading through these moops!

Damaging area effects will be SUPER effective against the groups of enemies. Roll your damage as normal, describe it awesomely, and then leave the rest of then math to me. However... you're unlikely to be able to include one of the single baddies (like the priest or giant) in with a bunch of the others. If you do target one of the 'special' enemies with an area effect, you can expect to hit fewer of the little moops with the same effect.

The Orc Eye of Gruumsh is towards the rear of this wave, so engaging him in melee will be tricky unless you have a way to deal with lots of opportunity attacks.

The frost giant has 3/4 cover against any ranged attacks (+5 AC) and dex saves (+5) originating from anywhere besides the archery tower. He CAN, however, be reached by melee characters standing upon the palisade wall, and will not benefit from cover against melee attacks. Getting atop the wall might entail taking a few opportunity as you make your way to a ramp/ladder... or you could get creative. Some sort of DC 15 skill check (no action required) could get you into place without incurring any opportunity attacks. Failure could mean opportunity attacks against you have advantage.

I'm assuming that each character finds some way to make use of the fortifications present within the walls, so I'll be treating each of you as having an AC 1 higher than usual. Woohoo!

If you're atop the archery tower, you will probably be attacked less - and your companions/militia will be attacked more.

Alalla stands with her brothers and sisters in the militia. When the army breaks through the gates she leads the responding charge.

Eyes as fiery as her sword, Alalla focuses on the orcs. She won't be blamed for their actions. Let Targos see she fights for them. She gave the orcs their chance.

She swings far more often than she could have dreamed before leaving Targos, and a pair of smoking bodies fall with every one. With each Alalla feels the grisly satisfaction of a problem solved.

That's what it is, not bloodlust, she reasons. Just being proud of a job well done. She doesn't see the hint of a smile forming on her face, or the wild look in her eyes.

Al does 115 damage to the orc group, killing 11 and a half (the 12th orc is only dead on the inside).

Action surge spent.

Standing in the archery tower, Vincent narrows in on the powerful figures on the field. The first arrow hits the Eye of Gruumish. Vincent clenches his fist and the arrow explodes with magic knocking the Eye prone. Vincent's second arrow narrowly misses his target.

"You missed one," Zenithral remarks to Vincent with a grin, launching an arrow into the Orc Eye of Grummsh eye as it falls back. (Orc Eyeball is dead.)

Orange energy flows down Zenithral's arm and into a single arrow. "Let's see how well this one works..." he says, aiming his bow skyward. He only fires one arrow, but dozens more materialize alongside it turning it into a hail of arrows that barrage the orcs and goblins. (Orc Party Poopers are dead. Goblins take 38 damage, plus a 3-damage Bursting Arrow)

Zenithral falls to one knee, sweating from the exertion. (Zenithral's speed is 10 feet and he has disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws for 3 rounds.)

Ras feels his body begin to sag as he takes a few hits, and his flames start to dim. Retreating back to the palisade, he lets the flames go out. He sees his friends fighting and does a quick count. Everyone is accounted for... including Al! Ras's eyes fill with tears. She's alive! But how?

Knowing now is not the time to figure things out, Ras feels his resolve return. He looks out over the massive armies and tries not to let his sliver of hope die. They will get through this.

He raises both hands and, with a roar, lightning shoots from his fingers. 100 feet long, the lightning bolt races through the ranks, causing monsters to drop, screaming and burning. Sparks fly off armor and body parts and hair catch fire. Smaller creatures are thrown backwards into each other, while larger ones simply fall. The screaming seems worse after the lightning disappears.The bright flash from the lightning reflects in his dark eyes as Ras smiles at the destruction taking place before him.

Challenge accepted. Ug hauls himself onto the top of the palisade and expertly runs across its top toward the frost giant, wisps if frozen mist trailing in his wake. Images of dearest friends now passed on flood Ug thoughts, carried by the force of a hunter within. In honor of all those he has lost an a mother he has vowed to save, Ug the barbarian heft’s his icy maul and slays a giant.

The massive creature collapses in a mangled heap, Ug the son of Nancy, standing atop its back.

The orcs surge ahead of the goblins, easily outpacing their smaller allies with aggressive strides. The militia charge to meet them. Though they have thus far fought beyond what the companions might expect of a simple militia, these human soldiers look small before the wave of orc warriors. But just before the two forces collide, Alalla breaks ahead of the militia to plow through the lead orcs like a steel avalanche. With the militia beside her, and arrows raining from above, she leads her fellow men through the orc line and into the goblins beyond them...

But the goblins are in poor shape to defend themselves, as a powerful lightning bolt shaped by the druidic magic of a wrathful gnome tears through their ranks, flinging the critters every which way. One ogre drops dead as it takes the bolt squarely on the chest.

Similar chaos hits the militia, however, when an ice-encrusted boulder tossed by the frost giant tumbles across the ground. Targos soldiers cry out as bones are crunched beneath the weight of the huge stone. It catches Alalla unawares as she dodges swings from the armored ogres, clipping her side hard enough to send her sprawling. The ogres looming above her chuckle as they raise their weapons high.

Beyond these ranks, the orc priest of Gruumsh stabs across the distance towards Ug. As the goliath climbs the inner part of the palisade wall, a spectral spear appears in the air beside him and nearly pierces him, but he is moving too quickly for it to find purchase. An eldritch arrow slams into the priest and throws him to the ground, where he looks up at the archery tower just in time to take a second arrow in his one good eye. He dies with a magical curse on his breath, a wrathful word that reaches the ears of Vincent and Zenithral. "Halt!" Vincent's experience in the void between planes lets him shake off the mental enchantment, but Zenithral finds himself forced to obey the orc priest's dying command.

Ug easily shrugs off the hits of the nearest enemies and finishes scaling the wall. Without slowing his mad dash at all he charges forward and lays into the frost giant there with all of his formidable strength into the monster's chest. As the maul strikes true, Ug feels its magic bite deeply into the giant, stopping its heart. The huge creature falls backward with a crash into the horde outside the walls, dead.

All told, the group fares pretty well! After resistance Ug takes 23 damage. Al takes 20 and is knocked prone. Ras takes 24. Militia takes a bunch - about 10 dead.

In moments, the parade grounds are nearly clear of enemies, but for the ogres about Alalla. The defenders have no chance to cheer, however, as more of the bloodthirsty horde pours through the broken gate.

Orcs in heavier armor led by a helmed orc chief form the next wave, a score of goblin archers behind them.

Just then, a gurgling cry from the command pavilion sounds as one of the battlepriests dies with an arrow in his throat. Giant bats - previously hidden by the darkness of night and the noise of the battlefield - swoop around the pavilion, black-clad orcs on their backs firing into the tent with shortbows. Ulbrec grabs Elytharra and pulls her to the ground, protecting her body with his own. One arrow bounces off the mayor's armor, but another sinks in deeply. Three arrows hit Commander Crale, and as he drops to his knees one of the giant bats darts close and grabs him with its claws. A moment later, it drops the Targos commander's corpse into the middle of the parade grounds among the men he once led.

The militia stare at Crale's body, despair slumping their shoulders.

A heavy grunt from beyond the walls reminds the party that the giant Ug killed was not the only one accompanying the army. With the gate gone, where will this next rock fall?

For wiping out almost then ENTIRE WAVE in one round (just a couple of ogres left over) y'all can have inspiration!

Unfortunately, the militia is very sad at the sight of their dead commander. They all had a max hp boost due to party contributions (sitting at 18 hp each) but now they're back down to their usual 11 hp each.

Also unfortunately, Zen failed his save against the Command spell, and so pretty much misses this next turn 😬😬😬

From her place on the ground, Alalla has a clear view of Crale's fall. She is already winded, but Crale's death sucks the breath from her lungs again. The man was responsible for so much of who she is.

Alalla stands, face grim, and tightens her grip on her sword. All around her her militia mates are faltering. She doesn't believe in vengeance, but they are at war. Their enemies have to die anyways. An easy solution.

"For Crale!" she shouts, face turned towards her enemies to hide her teeth and reflective eyes from her allies. "For Targos!" she cries again, weapon raised high.

Al races forward to engage the orc chieftain as he approaches. "Two greater chiefs than you have died tonight," she grunts in Common as she leaves a deep slice in his side. "What chance do you have?" The smell of cooking meat, the orc's own flesh, punctuates her words as her sword sizzles.

Orc chief takes 40 damage and must make a wisdom save or be afraid of Al.

As more die around him, Ug let’s out an eerie howl into the night. Above the palisade wall appear two massive bloody hands as the slain frost giant rises from the ground to answer Ugs call. his dead eyes now turned a pale white, The creature heft’s a massive boulder and hurls it at a flying orc assassin (hopefully not the one carrying Vincent). Assassin takes 35 bludgeoning damage.

Ugs link to the frost giant fades and the giants body collapses back behind the wall.? Ug turns his attention to the next largest threat. Ug rushes the armored ogres leaving crushed bodies in his wake. armored ogres take 122 bludgeoning and 11 cold damage.

Zenithral hears the command and feels his mind and body shut down forced to watch Commander Crale meet his demise ...the watchman on the tower... "NO!" Zenithral shouts. (Used Inspiration to pass Wisdom Save against Command)

Zenithral turns his attention skyward. Those goblins are dangerous...but those assasins...

The bats easily swerve, soar, and dive, even after curving his shots, but Zenithral's flumph companions sprays one as it flies by, creating just the opening he needed. (A bat takes 22 damage. If the bat isn't dead, it must make a DC 15 CHA save or be banished for a round, leaving its rider without a mount while still airborn.)

Replying to Zen, "Nice assist, watch this!"

Vincent takes a bead on an Orc Assassin. Firing his bow twice he hits both times making the Assassin dip and swerve. Seeing another one flying lower near the tower, Vincent times his jump near flawlessly, Vincent leaps from the tower hands clasped together high above his head. Slamming his fists down on the Assassin's shoulder, Vincent lands sitting backwards and in front of the Orc. With a quick dagger hand to the throat Vincent leaves him gasping for air.

Vincent does 45 damage to Orc Assassins(24 to one orc and 21 to the one he's going tandem with on a bat), he needs to make a DC 14 CON save or be stunned.

As the frigid wind of the Dale sweeps over Targos, the fight goes on. Driven by insatiable bloodlust, the orcs and their allies pour through the gap in the palisade wall. Members of the militia, bereft of their commander, begin to buckle under the weight of arrow, axe, and spear.

But the heroes stand strong.

Ug, mighty goliath that he is, stands toe-to-toe against three ogres. Slabs of muscle and meat about nine feet tall each, they slam huge clubs of iron down upon the barbarian (after resistance Ug takes 18 damage), but he takes the blows and responds tenfold, his maul felling monster after monster.

Alalla duels an orc chieftain, her flaming sword seeming cold compared to the determination raging in her heart. Her mind is fractured, but her will is adamantine. The chief throws his head back and emits a roaring command that spurs on his warriors (the warcry grants advantage to all his allies within 30 feet of him - which is a LOT of them). He scores a hit on Alalla with his axe (Al takes 18 damage, but the chief fails his fear save), but then his sneer quickly turns to a wary frown as Alalla's blade cuts him deeply. His voice rumbles out in Orcish. "Daughter of Gruumsh! You claim to follow a better way, but you defeated Ghotrag only with the help of sorceries. To what superiority do you lay claim now? How many of our own blood have you slain?" The orcs surge forward, and Alalla finds herself on the brink of being overwhelmed as a handful of her fellow soldiers fall around her (Al takes another 42 damage, and some militia perish).

Zenithral's own will proves to be no weaker than Alalla's as he shrugs off the debilitating spell. With all of his focus, he plants an arrow into the side of one of the giant bats. As it vanishes in purple smoke, it's rider takes a long fall to the blood-streaked ice below and lands with a sickening crunch.

A hail of black-fletched crossbow bolts falls upon Zenithral and Vincent, returning the punishment these two archers have inflicted upon the horde so far (Zen takes 48, Vince takes 34, and Fluphy takes 12). Vincent snatches one bolt from the air and hurls it at another foe (I already reduced Vince's damage, so don't worry about that, just make the attack on your turn), then defies all reason and expectation as he hurls himself from the tower and lands deftly upon one of the bats just in front of its orc rider. In the brief scuffle that follows, Vincent is left bleeding from a foul knife in his gut as the assassin clutches at his own crushed throat. With no rider to guide it, and put off-balance by Vincent's fall, the bat clips the archery tower and suddenly becomes a tangled mess of limbs as it plummets to the frozen ground below. The bat's body breaks Vincent's fall, allowing him to avoid the brunt of the impact, but with the wounds he has sustained he finds he has little strength to rise (Vince takes another 57 damage and is unconscious I think).

Ras channels the power of the world itself, causing the ground to rumble and churn as if boiling. When the small gnome's spell is finished, the entire rank of goblin archers are no more than dark stains upon broken earth. A handful of fierce orcs descends on the little druid, and Ras realizes he may be in trouble himself (Ras takes 25 damage).

Beneath the command pavilion, Ulbrec snaps the arrow free from his side. He pulls Elytharra to her fee and cups a hand to her face. She touches his hand softly, then casts a spell of invisibility and fades safely from view. Ulbrec turns and surveys the battlefield for a moment, and then begins barking orders. "Stand strong, men! They fight for blood, but we fight for our families and our homes. Stand strong!" His voice carries over the battlefield, strengthening the militia's resolve. Responding to his orders, what reserves are left join the fray (20 more militia join in, but that's the last of the reinforcements).

Still more monsters rush into the parade grounds. Though they are slowed by torn ground and bodies, it seems there is no end to this horde.

The next wave is grotesque, and the defenders can smell them over the stink of blood and death. Alalla focuses on her attacks. Despite his fear the chief keeps his defense tight and she has trouble finding an opening. Finally her blade hits flesh. "This is your last chance." Her Common is spoken quietly through gritted teeth. "This town is under my protection. Give up your attempt at conquest or die."

Orc Chief takes 21 damage. He has to make another wis save. Second wind used.

"Idiot..." Zenithral spits, gritting his teeth as Vince is stabbed and crashes to the ground. With a flash of light streaking from Vince, the half elf staggers and he feels blood trail down his body. (Martyr's Empathy. Zenithral takes 19 damage. Vince takes 19 less damage from that last attack.) He doesn't take the full brunt of the attack, though, magic softening the blow. (Second Wind. Regains 12 HP)

He turns his attention to the exposed plague bearers, landing a few carefully aimed shots. (Plaguebearers take 65 damage)

Ras tumbles after the boulder and comes up dazed. Looking around, he sees his friends fighting, some of them struggling. He sees Vincent collapse. Feeling the heavy effects of the fight himself, Ras casts Mass Cure Wounds to help all his friends.

Ug does 30 damage to orc chief, then does unarmired strike to guarantee a hit and kills the chief. He holds up the corpse on display to try and crush the enemy’s spirit. He then attacks the marauders. Details to come
