New Member looking for a New Game

Hey everyone. I am an experienced PbP GM and player but have recently joined the community. For anyone that wants to know more about me you can check this link. I have come here hoping to get caught up in games that my regular PbP board doesn't really have a lot of interest in, namely L5R or DnD 5e. I'd be happy to GM or act as a player, though given my long history as a GM I'd prefer to play but I remain flexible. Let me know if you're interested and I'm sure we can work something out.

I have been toying with the idea to start another campaign in my homebrew world of Corvus on another continent then the one my olayers are at now. I want to start to expand my world and make it more connected. It is only in the pre alpha stages of planning rught now but I will be starting it sometime next year. I'll send an invite if your still around then.

Any luck finding a game Whistler? If not, I'd be happy to run a 5e learning-friendly game.

Not as yet. If you'd be up for that, that would be appreciated. Would you be using a sourcebook or something homebrewed? I may also create a more specific recruitment thread for an L5R game and see if we get any takers.

I think that I'll find a pre-written adventure for the core of the story. Any thing in particular you are interested in? For example, maybe pirates, mounted nomads, dungeons, Lovecraftian horror, evil wizards, invasion...?

I'm too inexperienced in the lore to attempt to run L5R.

As cliche as this is going to sound, I really am in love with the dragons both Metallic and Chromatic. As for L5R, I had thought of a game that is timeline ambigious that revolves around the Shadowlands. I thought perhaps the characters could start as Ronin heading to Crab lands to take part in the Twenty Goblin Winter and from there could climb the ranks of the Crab and embroil themselves in the wider poltics of the Rokugan. I also have a few other ideas up my sleeve that I dont want to give away.

Dragons, nice. Done. I'll find or write a suitable adventure and post a game up tomorrow.

The L5R idea you have sounds great. I love the idea of Ronin, and Crab + Shadowlands is perfect.

Thanks so much on both counts! My only question is whether you would prefer 4e or 5e for L5R?

I'm not sure that I have a strong preference about the edition. I have both, I've played in a 4e campaign once, and haven't really read the FFG 5th gamebook but that is in my to do list. My preference, in general, is to always try new things.

I dont have the 5e book at the moment but I do plan to pick it up in a couple of weeks once I'm paid. If you are happy to wait for a bit we can do 5e. I have heard good things about it.

Waiting suits me fine. This is a pretty busy time of the year for me.

Okay no worries. Also if there is a clan you would rather play as than the crab I can set up an equivalent for the clan of your choice.

Crabs fine. The last character concept I had was a merchant's son living in Mantis lands who understood the family dark secret to be that they were etta, until one night he sees his father, drunk, holding a secreted katana with a Crab family mon. It turns out that his father was a Crab samurai who accepted banishment to hide the dishonor of a beloved lord.

That would be a good concept, since the Twenty Goblin Winter would be a way for him to rejoin the clan. Is he recognised as a Mantis Samurai?

As envisioned, no. His family are posing as merchant class, of no particular clan allegiance, other than pledging loyalty to the ruler of the Mantis city.

Exactly so. Maybe with father's stolen katana, the mon removed and hidden.

I am turning over a few ideas for the first chapter. Which family would your character like to join if you could pick any of the Crab families?

My original idea was that they were Kaiu, based upon the mon. Perhaps they were instead a vassal family, such as Ishi.

No Kaiu will be fine. Did you want to provide the reason your father was run out of the Clan or would you like to leave that to me?

I will need to do some reading. It will be as honourable a reason for banishment as I can make it though.

I know I would love to give L5R a try.... last time I even read about it was 3E, so might have some catching up... lol

Well the more the merrier as far as I am concerned and this will be my first L5R game. I think the best way to do this will be for everyone to have a short origin chapter before arriving in Crab lands in the first "proper" chapter. I have some ideas for Qralloq based on what they have told me so far. What about yourself? Any ideas jumping out at you?

Wasn't there a Vassal family specifically created to accept the ronins who succeeded on a 20 goblin winter hunt?

Indeed there was but I found that a bit limiting for players so have happiky binned it.

Man, there are sooo many, the two that most come to mind are a Crane courtier who is making quite a name for himself with his paintings but finds the art utterly boring/unfulfilling but faces pressure from his family/clan to keep excelling at the finer arts or a Dragon Bushi spiritual warrior type....

Okay well for anyone that is interested in my L5R game, I have posted a board here. Just keep in mind that the characters need to start out as Ronin that have decided to take part in the Twenty Goblin Winter. What clan they were before they became Ronin and why they became one, I leave up to you. We will be using 5e rules but since I dont have the rulebook quite yet (I pick it up next week sometime), it will be a couple of weeks before we kick into the game itself.

It was pretty great. Lots of sun, beach, swimming, snorkeling, relaxation, read two lengthy novels, spent time with my family. All in all it was nearly perfect.

Oh hell yeah that's awesome man! I know we have only just "met" but I am glad you had a great trip away!

Well hello there! New guy incoming... hoping for some action here and there! Not a fan of big introductions and so on but eager to get hooked with the community. Applied to the game to get the basics and catch up to speed.

Hi there, this sounds interesting! I suppose you started by now, but I see there is one player slot open... I would gladly join in if I may. I have an unplayed Half-Orc Barbarian at hand, but I would also create any other character if a better fit is needed. I play 5e for some month, but only the analog way so far and I would love to try this PBP thing :-)

Hey there, friedenspanzer. We discussed two hands on this thread, a D&D 5e game I set up for Whistler, and a Lebens of the Five Rings game that Whistler started. My D&D game filled up pretty fast (sorry) and his L5R game doesn't have half-orcs - it's a completely different system.

Ah, all right, no worries. I was just invited for another 5e party that sounds promising, so I'm good :-)
