Let us at least go and check the dragon cavern and see if we can find what happened in it.

Iathos draws a shuddering breath, gathering his scattered thoughts and trying to focus on the tasks before the party.

"Indeed. Though if the Hobgoblins have the dragon already, might it make more sense to scout and infiltrate their camp? Whatever we decide, from this point on please, I beg you, consider caution. Let us not rush hastily into battle when careful strategy might better suit our ends."

We know not for certain that the hobgoblins actually have the dragon. He could’ve been lying to try and save his life. My vote is dragon cavern. But I will go with the group consensus.

OOC:
The ensuing drama made me forget to ask, but I'd like to roll insight on the hobgoblin, just in case.

Insight - (1d20+4)

Iathos nods. "Understood. Do we know roughly how long it will take to reach the cavern? It's dark, and some of you are blind in the night - a decided disadvantage over the Hobgoblins. If the journey will be a long one, perhaps we should find a secluded place to rest nearby and break camp at dawn?"

"I agree next we should use caution going forward.

Ruby detected no obvious deception from the hob.

If we left in the morning we could rest and regain some extra health.

Valinar expression is hard as he watches Iathos struggle with everything that is happening. Then, as if donning a mask, his expression softens, and he pats pats the tiefling on the shoulder. The paladin seems on the verge of offering words of comfort or wisdom, but he says nothing.

Later:
"Yes, I will be more careful next time. I admit, rushing in wasn'tvery smart. Though to be fair, I was hoping to draw their attention so you could catch them unawares."

"We camp here, make for the cave at first light. I will take first watch."

Iathos hesitates at the talk of resting in the cabin. "Did any of the Hobgoblins escape the battle? If so, they may have hurried to find their closest camp. They will know we came to the cabin, and so may come again in force if we tarry here. It would be ruin to be caught unawares in the night by a strong force. Hasan, mayhaps you know of a secluded place nearby where we might secret ourselves and camp? A cave or something of the sort?"

He pauses momentarily, seeming to war within himself. "Though having said that, such a place might well contain the camp of said Hobgoblins. Damn. What think you all?"
Jan 17, 2019 9:34 pm
"With Proper watch. Here should be a good enough spot for a rest."
Jan 17, 2019 9:53 pm
"I agree, braving the wilds with Hobgoblins about seems risky."

The night passes uneventfully. With the one hobgoblin that got away, you know that at some point, reinforcements might burst through the door. But with careful watches and eternal vigilance, the gods grant you this small mercy.

You all gain the benefit of a Long Rest, including a replenishment of all lost hit points, spent hit dice, and spell slots.

The morning looks like a rain day, and you can smell the musk in the air. After a meal, you pack your things, about to head off, when you see to the east, a flash of white in a clearing filled with sunlight, while the area is otherwise under cloud cover, perhaps a half mile away.

Are we going to the cave or track the big party. I was thinking last night we could wait until they come back as a small raiding party as ambush them with our archers able to stand far back and hit them

That May be riskier then we want to take though
