Chapter 1: Slavery

The past few days have been a blur. You’ve traveled with your hands shackled and a pulsating band around your neck. You arrive to a city. The hustle and bustle is immense. Eventually you arrive to the town center where you and 40 others stand. Mostly humans and elves, races of all kinds are here, including some you’ve never seen. A man walks around to each of you, pointing towards you and describing how you came to be here. Eventually you’re moved again, this time into the back of a large cart with 7 others. The sun goes down but the cart never stops. Eventually as the sun begins to peek over the horizon, a large gate comes into sight. The cart enters and you’re all forced out. Guards line you up in a straight line as a dwarf walks down the line.

Hmph, this the best they had. He says to a large half-orc.

For the coin you gave, Lanista Petrare The half-orc replies.

Well, let’s see what they can do.

The half-orc splits you into two groups. The four ow you vs two elves and two humans. He then throws a blue cube onto the ground in the middle of you. The ground lights up blue in a perfect 30’x30’ grid. He then dumps a box of random wooden weapons in the middle.

You heard the Lanista! Fight!

If you’re grabbing a weapon, you can use a full action to get the one you want or a bonus action to grab one quickly. If you grab quickly, roll a 1d6 to determine what you get. 1= missed grab, 2= quarter staff, 3 = dagger, 4 = short sword, 5 = spear, 6 = club.

So how do you as a GM run your initiative for PCs and NPCs? I have been it both where you wait your turn. In the tracking and then I have been in the kind where everyone before NPCs goes in whatever order there on. I was just curious how you preferred it.
Jan 21, 2019 3:42 pm
OOC:
I prefer straight order like we are at a table, but if it slows the gameplay, we'll adjust.

The firbolg scoops up a few stones from the dirt, muttering an incantation. With a flick of the wrist, he hurls one of the softly glowing pebbles at impossible speed towards the elf holding the staff, as he circles to put his allies between himself and the other gladiators.
OOC:
I cast Magic Stone as a bonus action, using my action to attack the staff-wielding elf with one of the stones. Then I'll move as above - putting allies and the weapon pile between myself and as many enemies as possible, while keeping my distance.

The firbolg shakes his head to clear the effects of the human's powerful blow. Circling cautiously, he calls upon primal forces and the air around him begins to feel tense and charged, like the stillness before a storm. His long arms swing out and the human goes to block instinctively, but the blow is not meant for him - the firbolg's hands meet in a thunderous clap.
OOC:
I'm moving around the human to position him between myself and the edge of the "arena". Since I was on the edge already, this shouldn't take more than 20 feet of movement. I'm not leaving his engagement range, so no opportunity attacks.

Then I'm casting Thunderwave - the human needs to make a DC 14 Constitution save. If he fails, he takes the damage below and is pushed back 10 feet, which will take him out of the arena area. If he succeeds, he takes half the damage.

I've got the rest of my movement and a bonus action still to use, but I want to see if he makes his save first.

Also, the boom from the Thunderwave is audible out to 300 feet, so this should draw some attention from bystanders if they're not focused on the fight already!

Tyrion’s stab misses but he connects with the blunt end, causing blood to gush from his head.

Eiravel’s clap causes the other human’s ears to bleed, but he remains standing.

In retaliation, the human throws 2 punches at the firbolg.

The firbolg frowns as the dust cloud kicked up by the blast clears to reveal the surprisingly tenacious human still standing firm, if a bit shocked. As the human regains his senses and his fighting stance, the firbolg suddenly vanishes.
OOC:
I'm using Hidden Step to turn invisible until the start of my next turn. Then I'm going to step around and away from the human with my remaining movement - hopefully he won't be able to tell where I've gone.

Edit: Sorry, that was why I mentioned I still had the option to use a bonus action! Even if he can still track me somehow (I'm 10 feet away), his attacks will need to be at disadvantage.

OOC:
End combat
As the last of the opponents fall, the half orc presses a button on the cube and picks it up. You immediately feel a slight shock in your neck bands.

Your form is terrible, all of you, the half-orc looks at the singular dead elf. Somebody get this meat sack off of my arena!

A few young humans come and grab the body, dragging it away.

Petrare looks at the four of you. Potential, limited, but potential. Well Dominus, they are all yours. And he walks away.

After Petrare exits, the Dominus pulls out an electric whip. Gladiators, in line!

Everyone begins to bustle to their spots.
Jan 25, 2019 4:11 am
Not seeing any avenue for escape Alyndin falls in line with everyone else, being sure to avoid the whip. Now that the festivities are concluded, how about that drink? He says with a smile at the man called Dominus.
Jan 25, 2019 4:14 am
As they are moving into line, the firbolg turns to Alyndin with a nod of respect. "Thank you, human. Your magic is strange, but soothing. I did not expect that fighting would hurt so much."

Then he turns to Conwan with a bit of a smile. "Little one, you are like the badger, fighting with tenacious ferocity. May I ease your pain?"

Jan 28, 2019 3:50 pm
As the four of you make your way back to eat, the sound of the electric whip cracks in front of you. Where do you think you're going? I said gladiators get to eat, not scrubs. He points to a pile of rocks in a corner. Each of you grab one and put it on your back.

Now, to bed. Can't have you be too tired to fight, now can we. Dominus points to a windowless building next to the food area. I'll come get you when it is time ti train some more.

Conwan looks at the sleeping quarters. Not much better than a barn. he thought ah, well. Slept in worse. He tries to go to sleep.
Feb 1, 2019 3:26 pm
You lay down and try to sleep, even through the rambunctiousness of the more experienced gladiators. Your body is tired and sore and you look forward to a good night's sleep.

Just as your eyes close, you hear a familiar electric whip. Get up scrubs, that's enough rest for the unproven!

The voice is followed by rioting laughter of the other gladiators.

You're moved back outside. The sun is no longer visible but the moon shines down.

Back to the rocks, you miserable vermin! Dominus yells again. You will be gladiators before I am finished with you!
OOC:

The firbolg is too tired to argue, but the Dominus is definitely on his "list" now.
Feb 2, 2019 1:14 am
Tyrion gets up from his bed with about as mich loathing as he can give to another and goes and picks up a rock again
Feb 2, 2019 3:23 am
Alyndin gets up with the rest of them not pleased with the lack of sleep and follows Dominus out to grab a rock and start the process all over again.
Feb 4, 2019 9:41 pm
This "training" continues day after day for weeks. One day, about a month into training, you are paid a visit from the Lanista. He whispers to Dominus and he whispers back feverishly. They seem to be arguing and finally Dominus nods. Lanista leaves.

Drop your rocks, scrubs! Go rest. Tonight we find out if real gladiators you shall become. Dominus says.

Feb 7, 2019 2:26 am
"You are focused on what happens when you stop being slaves, what waits for you on your return."

The firbolg shakes his head. "I fear there is nothing that waits for me. My home is gone by now. All that remains is to bring vengeance to as many as possible. Here, in the arena, or beyond. Only death."

Feb 7, 2019 3:27 pm
You sleep a full night, the first time in weeks. Even though your room is a cage with sheets on the floor, you sleep deeply. You awaken naturally, no one yelling or whipping you, only the normal bustle of people moving. You go to the food line, the first time since you came. It's a small room, mostly outdoors. 5 young elves are spooning black soup into bowls. There is also chunks of bread and mugs of water. About 2 dozen people of various races watch you as you enter the room.
Feb 7, 2019 5:03 pm
Tyrion goes through the line and grab his food and water goes to sit at a bench next to a burly gladiator to eat
Feb 7, 2019 8:40 pm

Why? Look at this place! Many of us have been taken from families or are criminals owing punishment. The only entertainment we get is from killing other people. It's enough to make anyone go mad.
Feb 8, 2019 3:53 pm
Yeah, I guess that makes a lot of sense. He starts digging into the rather plain food.Is there any hope of getting out? He asks, mouth half full.
Feb 8, 2019 3:56 pm
If you're successful enough, for long enough, there's a possibility of buying your way out. Although the more successful you are, the higher the cost goes. You could try escape, though I don't know of anyone that's been successful. No, I'd say the best way to escape would to die.

I am not cocky good sir, I am a knight and no mere gladiator can stand against me.

Tyrion just ignores conwan. He know he will earn his freedom
Feb 9, 2019 7:00 pm
As Conwan and Tyrion argue and Eiravel eats alone, what is Alyndin doing?
Feb 11, 2019 12:38 pm
Alyndin watches the scene with disgust that someone would use a toast in such a way. After seeing Tyrion's punch land against the brickwall of the mans face Alyndin thinks better of saying anything though. He sits down with his companions and eats the first real meal since being bought.
Feb 11, 2019 4:02 pm
The rest of the day continues with training as usual. As the sun begins to fade behind the building, Dominus calls the four of you to the front. He throws a pile of weapons on the ground.

Any simple or martial weapon.
Feb 12, 2019 11:25 pm
Striding up to the pile, Alyndin surveys the offered weapons and knowing that he can't use most of them with any proficiency he grabs a simple spear. Weapons aren't really my forte, but this will do nicely if all else fails me. Are you sure we can't just solve these issues over a nice mug of ale?

Rolls

Persuasion - (1d20+3)

(19) + 3 = 22

Feb 13, 2019 3:00 pm
Dominus smiles for the first time - he's even creepier when he smiles. Tell you what, you become our newest gladiator, and I'll see what I can do about getting you some sort of alcohol. He then nods to two of the gladiators and they retrieve weapons as well. A gnome picks up a crossbow and a short sword, and a human picks up a greatsword. Something you notice about all of the weapons, they're all blunted, preventing any permanent damage, hopefully.

Dominus throws the cube on the ground again and your collars power down. Fight!

As the goliath holds onto Eiravel, Tyrion's weapon hits him in the kidneys, once with the tip, once with the butt.

Conwan can't quite hit the goliath, with Eiravel in the way.

OOC:
it would be a touch OP if it got added to both attack and damage for sure. I added the crit damage to my previous post.

Due to the amount the close proximity of the the grapple, Eiravel manages to hit the Goliath. His eyes go fuzzy for a moment and blood drips from a cut in his head, but he pushes forward, even if barely.

The goliath headbutts Eiravel.
OOC:
6 damage if hit.

Unarmed strike - (1d20+8)

(14) + 8 = 22

The goliath drops Eiravel and holds up his hand in surrender. You're lucky there are 4 of you.

Dominus smiles and picks up the blue cube. Congratulations, the four of you are now officially gladiators. As he picks up the cube, your collars turn back on. Dominus motions for a young human who brings out a large iron rod and bowl with fire in it. Come and present your arms for your house branding.

I refuse to be marked for any reason. My body is a holy sacrifice and will not be marked.
Feb 26, 2019 1:02 am
You will bear the mark or you’ll see your god sooner than you anticipated.
Feb 26, 2019 2:11 pm
Turn his back and begins to walk away. Anticipating an attack being extra weary

Alyndin imposes himself in-front of Tyrion to try and talk sense into him, knowing that Dominus has no qualms with killing him if he refuses to be branded. Think about this brand as a battle scar. We haven't known each other long but I would hate to see a companion I haven't had the pleasure of sharing an ale with cut down before we could toast our victory over this place together.
Feb 26, 2019 5:05 pm
Looks at Alyndin Fine, but I will not be happy with this decisions and as soon as I buy my freedom I will cut this mark from my temple
Feb 27, 2019 1:48 am
"Yet another initiation rite based on suffering. Is that the only thing you people understand?"

The firbolg steps forward and holds out his arm. "Might as well get it over with."
Feb 27, 2019 4:20 pm
Alyndin nods to Eiravel and walks over to Dominus with Tyrion.

As he is being branded Alyndin looks Dominus in the eyes Now how about that ale.
Feb 27, 2019 6:29 pm
Dominus takes turns branding each of you in turn. Afterwards, you all retreat into the food area and goblets of a green liquid are passed around. Various people come up and congratulate you, including the goliath.

Fought well, you're lucky you fight as a group. he said.
Feb 28, 2019 1:14 am
"As long as we continue to fight four against one, we should have no trouble. It is a good strategy," the firbolg says without a hint of irony.
Feb 28, 2019 4:16 pm
Agreed, 4 to 1 is always a good ratio. Alyndin agrees as he throws his arm around Eiravel. Keeping his arm around his companion he points to the goliath You my large friend are absolved of your transgressions against Lapuard in the flames of battle.
Come drink with us!
Mar 3, 2019 10:38 pm
Conwan takes this time to sit down and have some peace as he drinks his cup.
Mar 5, 2019 7:20 pm
The celebration goes on for a long time. The foul tasting but highly alcoholic grog is passed around. The goliath leaves first and others trail out. Many party until early and training the next day shows.
