Dorn's Deep

"It is indeed an impressive creature, Reòthadh. I wonder what it relationship it has to Malavon to have been imprisoned in the form of an umber hulk..." Erevain holds a hand to his bloody side where some of his earlier wounds from the quaggoths have reopened. His stride is strong, however, as he steps up to the dead drow warrior that he and Ug battled.

He toes the body with his boot, but from the enormous axe wound in its chest there is no way the slim drow could still be alive. "Drow." His voice is strained with loathing. "Their hearts are darker than their skin. How many more might there be in this place? Are they houseless rogues, or do they act as the far-reaching arm of a matron mother?"

The surface elf keeps one hand on his sword as he turns to the party. "Where you see one, there are sure to be a dozen who escape your notice. There are few foes more dangerous to have slinking around in an unfamiliar place. And these led by a cunning wizard, and allied with an archfiend... This place is more dangerous than I believed." His eyes flick from one corner to another, as well and scan the ceiling. "We must tread carefully if we are to proceed."

Erevain catches Vincent's eye. "It seems there are two paths forward from here. Perhaps your specter might let us know what lies ahead of us?"
Feb 11, 2019 10:34 pm
"Good idea. It's almost dead though, if it doesn't come back something attacked it. All it will take is one hit to kill it."

Vincent guestures and the Specter heads off to the cavern on the left.

"The odd Drow from earlier mentioned a need to cross the bridge with alternative methods. Is it still an issue you think?"
Feb 12, 2019 12:43 am
Erevain shrugs. "I have passed the bridge with little difficulty." His fine brow furrows as he considers the matter. "The demiplane had wards that flared for some people and not for others, perhaps determined by race or some other characteristic. If Malavon set magical wards here as well, it is possible that he did so with certain specifications."

He kneels down near the bridge. "Does anyone see anything, magical or otherwise?"

Erevain takes the Help action, granting somebody advantage on an Investigation or Perception or Arcana check to look for traps.
Feb 12, 2019 1:53 am
Vincent takes a look around the bridge for magical traps. Bending over at the waist and kicking dust around, Vincent mumbles a bit to himself, and bobs his head non-committally.

Erevain and Vincent take a few minutes to look for any magical glyphs or sigils. With no luck on the near side, Erevain tentatively crosses the bridge once more to check on the far side. Sweat from the heat trickles down his face as he shrugs. "If there is a magical trap, it must be well-hidden." He leans to one side, trying to inspect the bridge's side. "There could be something along the bottom, but checking there might not be worth the risk."

He wipes his face and pulls back. "Well? Shall we rest while waiting for the specter to return, or not return, as the case may be?"
Feb 12, 2019 2:08 am
Fluphy toots about the chamber. Colored lights shoot through its tentacles when it floats too closely to the lava chasm's edge, and with an eery warble the flumph pulls back. It doesn't seem able to locate the imp, suggesting that perhaps the little fiend is no longer nearby.

The flumph does seem mildly interested in Vincent, however, no doubt due to the warlock's own telepathic abilities. It floats just behind Vincent's head, every so often reaching out with a tentacle much like a cat would while toying with a string.
Feb 12, 2019 2:24 am
"Let's be safe just in case. Let's fly across and rest on the other side and wait for Spector there."

Vincent walks over and touches Ug and Erevain, casting fly.

"You two first."

Does the breaking of one promise merit the breaking of another? Zenithral muses. The promise was made with proper intent...

"It's a pleasure to meet you Reòthadh." Zenithral says to the dwarf. A pun about giant dwarves almost reaches his tongue, but his dark mood suppresses it. "Thank you for aiding my friends."

"This was your home? It looks like it was abandoned for quite some time, much like the Hand of Seldarine. How did you come across our little band?"

The dwarf cracks an appreciative grin.

"Like stones, a dwerf rolls to wherever the mountain takes ‘em. A grateful dwrf I am to be in company of you and yer fellows. I dun know how I was found, but yer frien’, tha’ shady lil’ feller, Maverick found me, frozen in ice."

Stretching his sore muscles and tending to some of the wounds sustained from the fighting, Reòthadh tries to catch Alalla’s attention.

"If me mem’ry serves a dwerf well, mayhaps one could find a defensible respite in this cave, should we find a hallow long forgotten.

Reòthadh will help an ally find a potentially safe place for a short rest (survival)
Feb 12, 2019 5:15 am
Zenithral nods in response to Alalla's question. "Yes, she is almost certainly going in order to find the twins. Halla may not take it well, but I'm not sure there is much we can do unless we can communicate to her quickly..."
Feb 12, 2019 5:25 am
"I'm sure Halla will be devastated- she loves them like her own already- but that's not what I'm most concerned about. Is your mother one to explain herself and ask nicely? Halla is waiting for your return. She will defend the twins with her life if she thinks they should stay with her." Alalla frowns. "I'm worried for Kuldahar."

Reòthadh draws the attention away, and Alalla nods as he addresses her. "Thank you. We could use a rest." She looks to Zenithral. She doesn't like how his spirit seems to sag. "We'll talk more later, Zenithral." Her tone carries authority and says to not try to wheedle out of it, but then she reaches out somewhat hesitantly to grip his arm in a way she hopes is comforting. "I'm grateful you're back." With that she leaves to investigate the areas Reòthadh pointed out to her.

Putting their heads together, Reòthadh and Alalla are able to come up with a sketch of the layout of the next section of ruins ahead. The specter has not returned from the left branch, and Erevain is quick to remind the group that drow skulk these halls.
OOC:
So this hasn't been explored by the party yet, but Reòthadh remembers the general layout enough for Alalla or whoever to pick out a spot that might be defensible for a short rest.

"Well...she is sometimes nice and explanatory..." Zenithral says to Alalla, "Though very protective...She seemed to believe I had done what I thought was best, but looked frightened. I'm just not sure...I just hope Halla has found my grandmother and that my grandmother can convince Halla to let them go without a fight..."

Zenithral pauses, pained and ashamed. "I...I'm sorry..." He doesn't say anything further, but Alalla can tell he's probably referring to how he ended up getting trapped in the first place. Actually admitting that he was wrong to disobey orders regarding the portal might be beyond the half-elf's pride, but he at least manages to show regret for causing harm.

Alalla assesses their options, then picks what she believes to be the safest option. "Our backs and sides are protected in front of this collapsed corridor. Let's rest here for a while while we decide what to do. Erevain, Ug, can you get us across the bridge?"
Feb 12, 2019 9:50 pm
Thanks to Vincent's gift of magical flight, Ug and Erevain are able to take turns carrying the other companions across the glowing chasm, bypassing the bridge. The party takes shelter in the alcove of a collapsed passage, and hunkers down to bind wounds and recover strength.

Erevain's warnings of the sneakiness of drow prove true, however, when a dark form (drow shadowblade) appears suddenly in the midst of the group, with a blade that leaks darkness. It sinks the weapon deeply into Ras' back, leaving a mortal wound that drops the small druid to the floor, bleeding out his life (The Shadowblade deals 80 damage to Ras, a mix of piercing, necrotic, and poison. It has the 'assassinate' ability, making it crit against any surprised enemies).

A sweep of the sword creates a screen of blackness, confusing the group as the dark elf vanishes from view. It bursts through the small cloud into a forward roll, and comes up driving its black sword into Ug's stomach (Ug's Feral Instinct feature pretty much makes him immune to being surprised so long as he chooses to rage first thing, so I'm assuming Ug does that. Since Ug is NOT surprised, the shadowblade does NOT autocrit! Ug also gets to take an extra turn. After resistance, Ug takes 21 damage).

And then two more of the evil elves (drow warriors) charge into view, each wielding a sword and shield.

Basically Round 1 the party was all surprised except for Ug, so Ug gets to take that turn AND his turn for Round 2 now. Everyone else is just acting for Round 2.

Ras is bleeding out! Unless he has more hp than I remember.
