"Oh come now..." Zenithral says as the giant approaches. He turns and shouts at it. "Stay there, why don't you? GROVEL!" (Command. One it's next turn, fire giant must fall prone and then ends its turn.)

Zenithral takes a few shots, this time hitting part of one of the creature's eyes. The other skims off the side of its head. Instead of curving the arrow, Zenithral opens a portal and the arrow shoots through and strikes the other creature in a similar manner. (R2 takes 37 damage. R1 takes 15 damage.)

As the fire giant bears down on the the door, the companions redouble their efforts to move the monsters into Dorn's Deep. With weapons, spells, and muscle they get the first remorhaz through, though it bites down hard on Alalla's shoulder, razor teeth piercing her plate armor.
OOC:
After resistance Al takes 41 damage.
The second remorhaz snaps down at Ras, but Erevain's enlarged shield smashes into the creature's head with enough force to divert the blow and daze the monster. It swoons weirdly, maw flapping, as the companions push it halfway through the doorway.
OOC:
R2 is stunned for 1 round, so it is incapacitated, attacks against it have advantage, and it automatically fails str and dex saving throws.
The fire giant rams into the nearest remorhaz at full speed, axe held in two hands before him and massive legs pumping to throw the monster back out into the hall. He only manages to shove it a short distance before Zenithral's magical command overwhelms his senses, and he drops to his knees with a thud.
OOC:
Fire giant 1 is prone.
The remorhaz almost seems to smile as it rises up over the giant and unhinges its jaw.

With bellows of alarm, two more fire giant guards enter the tunnel from the far side.

Maralie covers her eyes as Ug removes his loincloth.
Mar 30, 2019 12:35 am
OOC:
Reòthadh casts catapult and launches a large rock towards R2 and readies his action to close the door once his allies tell him to. R2 takes 14 bludgeoning damage.
Scanning the room for blunt objects to launch, the dwarven sorcerer spits an especially ugly looking stone worthy of striking the Remorhaz. With a guesture and a curt grunt the elderly dwarf launches the stone with deadly precision. As the object strikes true, a cloud of dirt sprays across his companions; the rock was just a deceptive clod of dirt.

Taking large chunks of cabbage, chewing it and spitting globs of gunk into the bowl of water, Vincent then takes Ug's loincloth and cuts it into several pieces with his sword, then puts it in the water too. After having cast prestidigitation, the water was now blood red and smelled like blood too. Dipping the loincloth scraps in the fake blood and viscera mix, Vincent drops it on the ground and covers the area with most of the blood splattered all over. Then he pulls out the chunks of raw meat shreds it and adds it to the scene. Nancy takes off her apron, vest, and shoes. Vincent stops her there. "That should be enough." Receiving the same treatment as Ug's loincloth, the room looks like a massacre took place.

"Stay here Specter. Bite anyone who comes in... Specter, where did you get too? Ugh, probably died again."

"Ok, everyone, let's follow our little friend here back however she got here. Oh! One last thing."

Vincent casts invisibility on Nancy, Ug, and Vincent. "I can't cast it on you Maralie. we need to be able to see you so we can follow you out. Besides, they're looking for us, not you."

With Vincent, Ug, and Nancy hidden by invisibility, Maralie leads the group through a small side door, where a winding tunnel takes them back to the throne room. They pop out of cleverly hidden door set into the side of the dais and find the room empty except for the badly damaged golem and Malavon's corpse.

Maralie goes to the foot of the stairs leading up and listens intently. She turns - in the wrong direction - to wave at the invisible companions, indicating that she believes the way up is clear.

"Hold on kiddo, let me look around a bit first"Vincent quickly locks the secret door behind them, loots the room, and takes a look at the golem.

There is little to loot in the room itself. The throne is made of the same black metal that is found throughout Dorn's Deep, one that is likely rare in the rest of the world. Transporting any of the metal out of the dwarvn citadel is likely a feat in and of itself.

There is a an obvious source of treasure, however. Malavon's body is sprawled in the same gruesome position that Ilmadia's spell slew him. The dark elf archmage must have a wealth of magic items on his person.

As Vincent approaches the corpse he notices the nearby golem. The thing has sustained severe damage, but such a powerful magical construct is likely still dangerous - depending on whatever instructions its master willed upon it.

Vincent recognizes that sifting through the archmage's belongings might very well set the golem off. But what treasures might a master of the arcane keep on his person?

The remorhaz furthest into the tunnel strikes as quickly as a snake, wrapping its hard coils tightly around the prone giant and squeezing with immense strength as its teeth bore down into the giant's shoulder, sending a spray of hot blood to slick the floors and walls (G1 takes 43 piercing damage). One of the other giants arrives to aid its trapped companion, enormous axe slamming down to crack chitin and add more bodily ichor to the gory mess rapidly filling the tunnel (R1 takes 60 slashing damage).

With the other remorhaz still dazed from earlier, Alalla and Erevain stand enlarged shoulder to enlarged shoulder and heave. The remorhaz passes through the great stone doorway just as the third giant hurls a boulder of volcanic rock. With frightening accuracy the projectile smashes into the stunned remorhaz's head, then explodes into glass shards (R2 takes 76 bludgeoning damage).

Alalla and Erevain duck back out of the fray and back into the entry hall just in time for Reòthadh to enact the magic of the door and trap the battling behemoths in the tunnel beyond. Dust falls from the ceiling with the crash of each titanic blow heard through the thick door.

Breathing hard from the deadly battle and knowing that some of their friends are presumably still captured within the halls of the dwarven complex, the heroes find themselves wondering what to do next.

Alalla grunts. While she'll never be pale, her colouring is definitely wrong. "I'd rather not stick around to find out which side wins." She moves as quickly as she can towards the tunnel exit, unable to hide her limp as she leans on her glaive. Still, a smile touches her lips at the thought of the behemoths taking each other out.

Nancy sees the mage's corpse and can almost feel Vincent being drawn to it, away from the small group. She shakes her head before realizing that he can't see her.

"Leave it be, boy," she whispers, grimacing at the body stretched out grotesquely in front of them. "Unless you wish to lose your soul as well as your life. Dark powers like those are best left untouched. Powerful though they might be, they couldn't save him. May his soul rot." She spits on the ground and follows the slave girl, hoping Vincent doesn't go messing with things he can't understand.

Zenithral shakes his head in reply to Erevain. I'm not sure...but... Zenithral narrows his eyes, skeptically.

Fluphy, do you sense that Imp here?

He casts message and covers his mouth, repeating the message to everyone. "Can't tell if we're being watched. Vincent will likely find a way out. I've told Ilmadia I'd meet her at an old orc cave, with the twins. Unlike Erestor, I don't hate my mother, but we may need to take her out, and this is a good opportunity for that. I say we head out for now."

Al sighs with gratitude as Ras heals some of her wounds. She frowns thoughtfully as she receives Zenithral's message. She is about to reply, but decides against it. They can speak when it's more safe. "We aren't finished here, Reothadh. This is a tactical retreat." She leads the group out into the snow.

The party leaves the entry hall and the sounds of combat, passing up the staircase and out into the blistering, yet familiar, wind of the Spine of the World. Frigid as the air is, the peaks and ridges here have long been the home of Reòthadh, and with little trouble he finds shelter for himself and the others. Having been through a series of ordeals in the past few hours - let alone the past few months! - the group settles down to rest, and also to wait for their missing companions to surface from the depths of Dorn's Deep.

Eventually, as the sun makes its descent below the frosty landscape, a group of figures approaches the camp: the tall and slender form of Vincent, Ug's large and horned frame, and the two small gnomes Nancy and Maralie. Whatever troubles they might have had escaping the fire giants, Vincent saw them safely through.

With all of the companions reunited in the shelter, they continue their rest. As morning light creeps over the horizon, they must decide what is to be done next...
