Character Creation

Notes from the Discord channel.

You can choose the cyphers suggested in the character creation section of the book, or I can assign them. I'll also assign an oddity to each PC.

Where can I get access to the book (the one that contains the cyphers at least) without charge. I'm retired and have very limited resources. Just about everything I have goes toward medical bills. My original character had 3 cyphers and I didn't keep any notes regarding what they were. Is that too many?
Jan 27, 2019 7:20 pm
Humble Bundle has all the books you'll need for $1. Or, if that doesn't work, I can link you to my PDFs
Jan 27, 2019 7:32 pm
Nanos start with three Cyphers. I can link the descriptions for you when you submit your sheet.

I think I've found some. I don't know if some are more powerful than others but here's what I've selected. Shimmering Glass, Third Man and Mystic Marble. If those are OK, I'll put them on my cs.
Jan 27, 2019 8:40 pm
I'm not sure what you mean 'found some'. Where did you find them? It isn't meant that players pick their own from all the choices.
Jan 28, 2019 5:45 am
I found a listing of them on the internet. I thought you said that the players could select their own. See top of this page. I no longer have access to the rules as I did a couple years ago. Lost that in the last computer changeover.

Under each Type (class), there's suggestions for cyphers that you can take automatically. Either that or the GM can assign them to you

I assume that's in some rulebook somewhere that I don't have access to. If you have access, please clue me in.

Numenera Discovery is the core rulebook

Numenera Destiny has additional options

I've reviewed Lucina, Naat, and she looks perfect!
Jan 29, 2019 3:34 am
I've reviewed Savvion, lenpelletier, and they look great, too.
Jan 29, 2019 3:48 am
Aldrusian, I've reviewed Aduan and have a few notes:
- track somewhere that you can bear three cyphers at a time. It will come up that you need to know that.
- 8/11/22 pool seems way too high. But I checked and it's legit! Wow.
- You should add that you can Sense Magic: Sense "Magic": You can sense whether the numenera is active in situations where its presence is not obvious. You must study an object or location closely for a minute to get a feel for whether the touch of the ancients is at work.
- You're actually Specialized in all actions involving "understanding numenera". Trained from both Nano and from Mystical means you're Specialized
- You shouldn't have Trained in Crafting Numenera or in Salvaging Numenera. Unless I missed where you got that from, in which case please give me a reference.

I put mine up, but it's not entirely done yet. I just need to add in my inventory and adjust a skill so I have a better handle on it, but please let me know if it's missing anything.

Alright, so we're waiting in Jabes and Oxbox to submit their creations, and then we'll get er going. Now, based upon the character choices, I think we're just going to be playing something like Farmville(tm) right? We're all okay with that?

But seriously, I'm serious. My understanding is that the crew are busy getting to accomplish something with the power of Lego(tm). Hunt down stuff, scrap it, build new stuff. And that's awesome, I'm on board. Each player will have a contribution in this procedure.

Let's talk crew and base.

Why don't we spitball on what drew your crew together in the remote town of Tarshu, what goal unites you and motivates you to do the thang, and what does your base consist of/look like.

Character submitted. Desoto is a Wright who Makes something Out of Nothing. I hope I've worked out all the kinks on the sheet!

Mick has an obsession with Numenera and came to Enthait to learn from the Aeon Priests that reside there. Not being versed in combat as much as other explorers Mick could be in need of protection and offers his services in crafting in return.

I could see Mick with a lean-to hut as a workshop with all his tools in pristine condition and organized just so.
Jan 30, 2019 1:46 pm
For background stuff I chose these (includes the one from Oxbox):
Quote:
Initial Link to the Starting Adventure: Voices in Desoto's head told him to go.

When Mick was developing a plan from a seed of knowledge from the prior worlds, Desoto was burned in an unexpected incident. He still has a small scar.

Desoto created a device that caused him to disappear for three months. He later reappeared with no memory of what had happened and a star-shaped scar on his left temple.

Tarshu is Aduan's hometown, where he was born and where he lived with his parents until the shooed him off to his uncle's where he learned the details of the Numenera. He was drawn back to Tarshu in a dream. He's a bit of a tinkerer which leads him to any kind of swap meet or junk show that happens to pop up. He most likely met some of the members of the crew at one of them.

Mick Pates
- Add medium and heavy weapons to your list of inabilities

Everything else looks good.

Myrage
-record your inability with heavy weapons
-As a Jack, you get a Flex skill you should record somewhere
-Also record your Psychedelic Abilities somewhere, because it's cool and you don't want to forget that

Otherwise it's good

Adding +1 to my speed edge

Not sure how that works. What I've read in the rules is a bit confusing. I would be interested in upgrading Aduan's tier level but I believe that takes a rather long time to do. It seems there are 4 steps. Do I use up all four of the xp that Aduan has just to complete one step? And are those subheadings in the rule book those steps? I'm referring to the items on page 130 in the main text.

Yes, you got it Aldrusian. Each step costs 4 xp. The steps are the listed headings: Increasing Capabilities, Moving Toward Perfection, Extra Effort, and Skills. Once you have made all 4 steps, you go up to tier 2. It probably will take awhile.

Edda Kurido is a Mystical/Mechanical Jack Who Explores Dark Places

I've never done this before, so please forgive any errors.

I designed him to be an explorer and curator of numenera. He has the skills to mess around with them and implement them (I believe). He has a friend (Sevvan) who has a library she inherited from generations of her family. Edda spends most of his off-time there researching (when he is not tinkering with a new find).

He has a connection with one of the other PC's. They have done a couple of jobs together and get bonuses when doing tasks collectively (don't know whom that is yet; let's see who he jives the best with).

That is what I've got. Please let me know what more you need.
Jul 3, 2019 12:16 pm
I've looked over the character and it looks good. I note that I can't see where some of your silks came from, namely: Salvaging Numenera, Crafting Numenera, Identifying. Now one of those would come from the free Jack skill, but I'm didn't see the other two. Can you point me to the source?
Jul 3, 2019 1:50 pm
From the Mystical/Mechanical Descriptor. It says you are trained in all skills dealing with numenera.

Right. For party balance reasons, I suppose, they split the ability to separately Salvage, Craft, and Identify Numenera into disparate Types.
Jul 3, 2019 2:04 pm
Ok. I just noticed that. I did not have a lot of sleep and had to work last night. I took out Crafting Numenera and Idemtifying and kept Salvaging Numenera for my Jack skill.
Jul 3, 2019 2:06 pm
Awesome, looks like a great character, with some cool abilities.
Jul 3, 2019 11:40 pm
Thanks. Have we figured out who is doing my cyphers and oddities?
Jul 5, 2019 10:28 pm
I'll do that asap.

Cyphers

Gravity-Nullifying Spray
Level: 3
Usable: Spray canister
Effect: A nonliving object about the size of a person or smaller sprayed by this cypher floats 1d20 feet in the
air permanently and no longer has weight if carried (though it needs to be strapped down).

Living Solvent
Level: 8
Usable: Canister containing slime
Effect: Once released, this organic slime dissolves 1 cubic foot of material each round. After one round per
cypher level, the slime dies and becomes inert.

Oddity
Cube that, when activated, disappears for one minute and then reappears in the same spot.
Jul 7, 2019 1:01 pm
Thank you much. I will add them to my sheet.
Jul 7, 2019 3:49 pm
btw, I know your character isn't in the story yet, but you, as a player, are. You have a prompt waiting for you in Chapter two. Just describe it from a sort of impersonal viewpoint.
Jul 10, 2019 5:08 pm
mcinnis, I've sent you a PM.
Mar 31, 2020 6:09 am
Hi, what do I need to know before looking for a character?
Mar 31, 2020 12:46 pm
In the current group, we have:
Lucina is a Graceful Glaive who Fights with Panache
Desoto is a Mad Wright who Makes Something out of Nothing
Hashia is a Charming Arkus who Becomes Energy
Myrage is a Strong-Willed Jack who Crafts Illusions
Mar 31, 2020 6:12 pm
And if/when we swap GMs again, I'll make a new character if you're too close to mine, so don't worry about that one.
Apr 1, 2020 3:53 am
I'm leaning toward a Confidant Delver. Maybe with Travel through Time.
Apr 1, 2020 7:34 pm
Let me read travel through time real quick before you settle on that...
Apr 1, 2020 7:40 pm
Okay, I don't want to have to deal with ACTUAL time travel, but aside from that one power, the rest is okay with me. However, since I won't be GM forever, Qralloq?
Apr 1, 2020 8:05 pm
I can't find Travel Through Time. Which book?
Apr 1, 2020 8:14 pm
Travels Through Time (⯊ CHA1 p79) (⬘ POTA p19) (⨹ POTA p31)

CHA1 = Character Options One
POTA = Priests of the Aeons
Apr 1, 2020 8:31 pm
I don't have those books immediately accessible. In general I don't think that I would object to any official material.
Apr 2, 2020 4:35 pm
The only one I don't REALLY want to have to deal with is the 'travel back in time 10 years' but if you get that high and you DO THAT, and I'm not GMing, I want to, because I have a story for that.
