LMoT - Return to Phandalin

Leaving Old Owl Well you head back towards the Triboar Trail and Conyberry. You stop in the abandoned village again and take shelter in the same building you did previously.

The night is cold and quiet and you awaken to a new year but the same brutal cold weather. You eat what you can and attempt to stay warm as much as possible and decide to get back to Phandalin sooner than later. You head west on the Triboar Trail heading back. After a half a day of travel you begin to notice a figure in the distance on the trail. It is moving steadily from what you can tell but you are definitely making ground on it. At this pace you will overcome it within the hour.

  After glancing into the ring's arcane nature, I hand it over to Spark.

— You stay on the frontline, so this should keep you ... safe-er.

— Oh waow, really? I mean, it certainly makes sense, but it amazes me that you hand it to me like. Maybe we just met on a bad day... After a second lost in thoughts, a broad smile illuminates my face and I accept the valuable gift.
Well thank you, I really appreciate it! I already owe so much, and this further increases my debt to you. I'll do my best to put it to good use so that its protection serves you as much as it serves me.
I then go to our artificial friend, and hand him the magical longsword I've been carrying for several days now. Do you think this mighty weapon may serve you? I've been delighted and honored to use since we found it, but I must admit it is a bit heavy for me to use it comfortably.

Nine looks over the blade and ponders, This one would be honored to wield such a blade but are you sure you do not wish to use it?

— You have proved to be a worthy fighter and an honorable ally. And even if I love having such a powerful sword in my hands, I'm aware that I'm not as good with it as I am with... well, my good old swords here. I tend to favor lighter blades so that they don't impede my mobility.

Letharia continue to walk with her mind on her task. As she walks she keeps an eye on her surroundings while keeping her cloak pulled around her from the cold. Finally, after some time with a quick look over her shoulder notices that there is a group of travelers behind her.

She thinks about quickening her pace but then seeing that one of their members is pretty big decides that if they want to catch up they probably can. Best to save her energy if things go bad. Besides it is probably nothing but her own imagination. It is a road after all and she is most likely not the only traveler to be on it.

The construct smiles, [b]Many thanks, Spark. This one will make good use of the weapon. Nine takes the magical blade. Swinging the blade through the air a few times Nine points ahead of the group, What do you think that person is doing out here alone? It is too dangerous to travel by one's self.

— Sometimes it's better to travel alone, Nine. - I say while looking at the back of the person moving further ahead.

You aren't sure but you believe it to be an elf, but with darker skin than you have seen before.

Hmm, really? This one was taught to stay with a group, if possible. Especially if those others are able to defend themselves. The Creator said there is strength in numbers.

Bebaral is to cold and in thought about what transpired earlier.

The party closes to within 60 feet of the lone figure.

Seeing that the group following her is going to catch up and pass, Letharia figures it would be better if she faces them at this point. FiguringSince they have not made a hostile move at this point, she feels somewhat safe but that could change in a moment.

She then stops, moves to the side of the road, and turns around keeping her left hand on her buckle of her belt so she can reach for her rapier quickly if need be.

Good-day, travelers, she calls out with a pleasant voice and a smile. Those getting a good look at her for the first time see a beautiful drow dressed in dark red leather armor. If you have encountered drow before you notice that she seems relaxed, you would say pleasant or happy unlike any drow you ever met especially in her smile. You can tell that under her cloak is a backpack and of all things a lute pokes out from under as well.

She thinks, Well maybe they have information I need.

"By chance have you met any travelers lately. I am looking for a dwarf goes by the name of Gundren Rockseeker." she then gives a rough description of him.

A little nervous she bites her lip a bit and bounces a little on her toes, nervous of how they will react to running into a "dark elf"

She squints a little as the sun hits her face as she tries to keep an eye on all of them.

  The very second that I am able to discern the race - there is a crossbow pointing towards the possible threat. I quickly scan her for any symbols, insignias and such. The fact that she didn't unsheathe her weapon was the only thing stopping me from releasing the bolt.

— I'd advice to move your hands from the rapier. Slowly.

"Well that is a pleasant greeting, pointing a crossbow at someone. As you can see my hand in not on my weapon, unlike you, but my hand is on my belt, nor have I drawn my weapon, as you have. Have you not seen a lady or a bard before that you greet someone thus? she says her voice still friendly but more cautious now, she does move her hand away but begins thinking her invisibility spell might come in handy in a moment. Her eyes though do become more focused seemingly becoming more alert of her surroundings.

Surface elves always think they are so superior than us lowly elves because we have dark skin, maybe he is jealous or insecure, that has to be it. she thinks to herself which causes a quick extension of her smile.

He notices she does have multiple earrings and some gems glued or attached somehow to the right side of her face by her eye. She also seems pretty young for an elf for those who can tell that sort of thing.

Nine stands back, unsure how or even if he should inject himself into the conversation.

Surprised by Leylin's quick draw and aggressive reaction, I wait until the situation settles to step in.
— A dark elf roving on the surface and greeting travelers on a sunny road isn't something common, I must say. Excuse my friend's distrustful reaction, but his prudence saved us more than once. I do not need to ask why you travel on your own, but that person you said you were looking for... I've heard the name before. Some dwarf, isn't it?

Learn to make friend and remember sarcasm doesn't help.she thinks trying to remember one of the lessons she has had over the last few years before she says something else that might get her in trouble.

She brushes some hair away from her face and says, "Yes, I am looking for a dwarf names Gundren Rockseeker. Some friends of his haven't heard from him in a while. Since they couldn't come out themselves they sent me to go and check in on him." she says thankfully trying to steer the conversation away from what she sees as an angry elf pointing a crossbow at her.

  As situation didn't escalate nor the drow made any aggresive moves, I slightly ease up and move crossbow to point downwards. Although the bolt still is armed.

— I'm sure that it isn't the first, nor the last time you encounter prejudice due to your race. I shrug slightly. Some would even attack first and ask questions later.

"Why would they be sending a kind of yours about!? A Death wish you must have.

"Let's just say I owe them a lot and they felt I was able to take care of myself if I needed to.", she says with a grin. She then pats her lute and says,Besides how am I going to learn new stories and songs if I sit and hide from the world."

"Books is the way most people start!"

I have spent the last five years as a scribe so I agree books are great but they only go so far. At some point you go see the world for yourself. Wouldn't you agree?" she replies.

"Not when I know I'll get shunned by everyone else."

Starting to get frustrated she says,"So, I should just hide in a hole and die? Is the world up here just as cruel as the one I came from?" A single tear runs down from her eye.

"That is not what I was taught, I was told,... nevermind"

"The one below was because of your kind's making. Up here, not many take kindly to those who have a rep for maiming and killing blindly" Bebaral readjusts the jacket and pack.

I hate to tell you but there is much worse below than my kind. Though you are right that my kind doesn't help matters. But where else can I go? To return means my assured death. And even if I could, I would not go back."she says with a frown as she wipes the tear of her cheek.
"So here I am on this road, a new life under the sun. Which I can say is quite pleasant even if it does make it hard to see. Even though my path might be dangerous, I would rather be helping a friend than who I was raised to be.

Nine takes in the conversation for a short time before chiming in, This one would agree with the drow-elf. Nine would know little of the real world if it was not able to roam and learn. This one will admit that it has not had a lot of time to learn the ways of the outside world.....or at least does not recall much of it's learning.....but knows it has learned much more than The Creator taught it. One can only learn so much from....... Nine realizes he is repeating himself.

This one would be glad to have you travel with it. All things can learn from one another, regardless of history or background.

Far as you can tell, she is telling the truth.

All of 5 feet and 90 pounds of Letharia looks up at Nine and says, That is nice of you to offer though I don't think your friends might agree. Though if you want to help me find my dwarf, I won't say no. Right now my only lead is that he is known in Phandalin."

She thinks At least he doesn't want to kill me, cause he could probably squish me like a bug.

— I really wish it wasn't winter, so there would be some spider you could squash... I grumble, while disarming crossbow and stashing the bolt back into the quiver. I'd say that you're lucky. In more than one way... Ahem. I don't know which god paved your way to cross our path, but most of us are familiar with Gundren's name. He was captured...— So understand my lack of trust to any drow when there's someone with nickname 'Black Spider' present in enemy ranks. I shrug. I'm aware of some ssri-tel-quessiri walking the surface, some even without demonic blood within... It would help if you belonged to some notable group of those.  I pause and look at Spark and Bebaral as Nine already stated his opinion:
— I incline to believe that your path lies entertwined with ours, so unless others object, you're welcomed to join our rescue mission...

Seeing Leylin disarming his crossbow, I relax a little and let my pretended trust tarnish a little.
— I've never met non-evil drows so far in my somewhat short life, so I hope you'll excuse my natural wariness. But faithful to my platinum patron, I welcome anyone willing to join the fight against the great evils that scheme in the dark. I step forward and give a hand in sign of acceptance. It would be my honor to have you by my side. They call me Spark, for I channel the powers of the storm into the sword of Justice.

Letheria listens to what everyone has said and then gives her hand in greeting to Spark saying,My name is Letheria. I am what can be called a reformed Drow or at least that is what the term they used when they introduced me while they taught me about what it means to do good instead of evil. Well that is a long story for another time. I don't have the power of the storm but have learned a few tricks as a bard.

She stops for a moment bites her lip for a second, like she is pondering something and continues, Captured you say. No wonder the Harpells sent me to find him and my guess is they already know that. They wouldn't want me to just go back with just that information so I will gladly join you to find him.

She looks over at Leylin and says,I would ask if you please keep that crossbow pointed somewhere other than at me. I don't know of any demonic blood in me but knowing my mother's family, I guess anything is possible but if there was I am sure she would have bragged about it. As for this "black Spider" do you know for sure it is a Drow? I mean it is very Drow-like, could it be a surname? for mine is Darkweaver, at least in the common tongue.

Nine shows what could be taken as a smile across his face, This one is glad this encounter did not devolve into fighting. As much as that thing is what this one was made for, it is not always the required result of a confrontation. Letheria, you may call this one Nine. The warforged projects a hand to be shaken toward the newly acquainted drow.

Letharia shakes Nine's hand as well a little concerned that he might crush it by accident. Nice, to meet you to Nine.

Finally, taking her eye of of Leylin's crossbow she notices his lute. He notices her looking at him when she says,So are you a bard as well? I see you play the lute as well."

— I'm not speaking about your direct relatives... I shake my head when Letharia mentions her mother's family. Drow are ssri-tel-quessiri that were tainted by demonic blood. It happened millenia ago, mind you. Your hair and eye colors are ... Well, this is not the place to speak of the history...

  I recollect myself and continue:
— I'm not sure about the race or even gender of the Black Spider. That was just a mere suspicion...

  When asked about the lute:
— I dabble... Pausing as this sentence leaves my lips, I think: Mother would slap me for this if she was here.... I avert my gaze and continue: What I meant is that I received some training and am able to play it.

Make friends, make friends she repeats in her head as she remembers what she was told before she left.

Still speaking to Leylin, "Oh, well maybe at some point we could play together. I have always enjoyed performing the elven "Lay of Laurianna". Since it is a duet with both male an female parts, I only have been able to do it a few times. I find the story of it dealing with with two elven lovers held apart by their families such a great tale. Anyway so, if you want to do a duet sometime let me know. so caught up in her explanation, not recognizing any visual ques from Laylin.

Finally, realizing she is rambling a bit, she tries to gets back to business, I am sorry, I get a little caught up with songs sometimes. Anyway, since you have been looking for Gundren already, where were you heading? I was heading to town to try and find any leads but you know more than I do."

  Slightly surprised by the enthusiasm of Letharia, I wait for her to calm down, only reacting by slightly rising one brow.

— Sorry, but I only play. Singing isn't my forte I smile and slightly shrug my shoulders. We're on our way to town to get some supplies and will move towards the place where Gundren is held as soon as we're ready. But I do recommend to not keep your appearance in the open... Until we made some introductions, that is.

"Can we babble in a warmer area!" Bebaral insists.

"Oh, ok."she says a little disappointed. She reaches into her pouch and pulls out a pair of gloves and puts them on as well as pulling the hood of cloak over her head as she falls in walking with the group.

Trying to come up with a better subject she says, "You mentioned a question about which god put me on this path. I believe it was Eilistraee, the dark maiden. She is the Drow goddess of song, beauty, swordwork, hunting, and moonlight. I heard her song though I didn't recognize it at first. She calls to Drow that reject our heritage and offers light and hope. At least that is what my research with the Harpells seems to indicate. That is why they didn't kill me. They believed I had potential at least that is what they told me. They said that is why I have a love for music and why they had masters from the College of Fochlucan train me as a bard.

— Next time I'd advise you to lead with Eilistraee's name... I remark while moving forward. We'd avoid all that stand-off earlier previously as I'm aware of Dark Maiden and her song... Well, having her holy symbol in plain sight could help as well. But not everyone knows about followers of Lady Silverhair's.

  After a few minutes of walking, I ask: — So who or what are those 'Harpells' you've mentioned?

"I don't really know how many people have heard of her. Besides, I am not a cleric and how many people are going to recognize a sword-wielding dancing female Drow silhouetted against a full moon as a holy symbol that they are not to be afraid of? Also the standoff occurred after I said just hello and you stuck a crossbow in my face. I didn't have much time to think of what would be the best thing to say about what that a person may or may not know about a Drow goddess and how can I use that." she says shaking her head.

As to the Harpells that is an easier answer. They are a large family of wizards that founded Longsaddle. Dowell Harpell is one of the council members of the Lord's Alliance. They are pretty powerful but a friendly group unless you insult them or attack them. They are very protective and those who cross them tend to come to a very swift and bloody end unless for some reason they decides you should be spared.

With you new ally in tow you continue the march back to Phandalin.

Whooo!!!! still only lvl 1!

Letharia keeps walking, occasionally looking over at Leylin trying to figure him out.

Freezing cold is cold. I'll assume advantage from Prestidigitation and will help those who need it.

Our travelling conditions are hard enough to not impose a forced march onto ourselves without a need to. I'll advocate for a reasonable speed, espicially since we are supposed to go back on track right after reporting what happened.
Can Leylin get some info on Gundren's condition when he uses his ability to locate him?

Well, one advantage I found about living underground since I came up here it is usually always the same temperature down there. This freezing cold is something I am still getting used to. Trying to go much faster may be a bit much. She says with her teeth chattering a little bit.
Just out of curiosity have you been able to contact Gundren's brothers, Nundro and Tharden? I was told if I could not find him to try and contact them as they usually work together.

The remainder of the trek is uneventful and you make it back to Phandalin at nightfall.

  Upon crossing the town's entrance, I turn to my companions.

— Why don't you guys got get us some rooms at the inn while I deliver the report of our actions? A warm supper and a room that isn't open to this weather do sound very appealing right now...

— I'd actually be interested in coming with you, if you don't mind. Then we'll go get that supper and a pint of well deserved ale.

Nine's joints creak as the construct nods it's head, This one would like to rest so it will go reserve rooms.

Nine sluggishly takes off toward the inn and enters.

Looking over at Leylin and Spark,I guess it would probably be better if I stuck with you two. Don't want a cause a scene now do we. she says with a smile

"I mean if I walk into a inn with Nine. That could not end well."

"So who are we going to see?"

"Indeed! I'll see you in the morn then." Bebaral also heads to the inn.

— As you wish. I shrug to their eagerness to follow me on an errand. We're going to see sister Garaele.

After making their plans the group awkwardly says its short goodbyes before quickly realizing the two buildings they were heading towards are essentially across the street from each other. You all walk together and Nine and Bebaral walk into the Stonehill Inn while Leylin, Spark and Letharia turn the other direction into the Shrine of Luck.

Leylin & CO: You reach for the door and find it locked but notice candle light still glowing dimly from inside the building. Leylin wraps on the door a couple times and after a few short moments the door begins to open and you see the familiar elvish face of Garaele peak from behind. She scans you all for a second before recognizing Leylin. She smiles warmly, "Hello there. Its been a bit. I see you have a new friend? I am assuming since you are coming by so late that you might have some news for me?"


Nine and Bebaral: Upon entering the Stonehill Inn the room comes to a screeching halt at the sight of Nine. No one has neither seen nor heard of a creature such as him and no one is sure on how to react. All eyes on you.

Dearly wanting to say something to see if see if she could fluster Laylin, she decides better of it and keeps her mouth shut. Well almost shut as she chews on her lip bit, curious to see how things will play out with her there.

— Good evening, Sister. I saw that there is still light and decided to deliver my report before you Trance. I take out both mine and necromancer's papers from my backpack while talking. First, Agatha’s answer was, and I quote, "I traded the book, to a necromancer named Tsernoth from the city of Iriaebor. That was more than a hundred years ago. I do not know what became of the book afterward."

  Next I hand her the necromancer's records and my translation of them.

— We also visited Old Owl Well on our way back. There was a Red Wizard of Thay present. Necromancer with personal troop of zombies. We've dispatched both. Here are some documents of his together with my translation to Common. I pause, give my companions a side glance and continue. I think this information should be of note to some people in Neverwinter.

Nine is mostly oblivious to the stares as the construct approaches the bar, waving down the innkeeper. Greetings, this one's companions require boarding for the night.....maybe a coupe of nights. he takes out a few gold coins and puts them on the bar, Do you have five rooms available?

She waits until Laylin gives his report and then adds as politely as she can,"Don't mind him, he seems to always be straight to business. Yes, I am traveling and working with them. Name is Letharia Darkweaver of Longsaddle. Nice to met you Sister Garaele."

  I thank Sister for a warning, wish her a good rest and leave the shrine. When we outside I hand over two potions to the Spark.

— Here, let's hope we won't need them....

— Thanks Leylin. Tomorrow morning, we may need to redispatch our acquisitions among our current members. But tonight, I'd be happy to simply go get a pint and a well deserved warm meal. Let's go check how things are going for Nine and Bebaral. Whatever you take is on me! I conclude by addressing my companions.

"Have a goodnight sister Garaele and nice to meet you. she says in parting. She then follows the other two to the inn.

The day is yours..

  After enjoying my trance in the warm room, I do some upkeep on my equipment and as soon as the morning comes - set out to find Sildar.

Sildar is easily found at the town masters hall. The same sign still posted outside stating:

REWARD-Orcs near Wyvern Tor! Those of a mind to face the orc menace should inquire within.

As you to enter you see Sildar sitting at a desk finishing up his breakfast. He notices you and provides a pleasant greeting,

"Ah Leylin, good to see you. I heard you had made it back into town. Have you had any luck in locating our friend Gundren?"

Letharia goes downstairs early, not sure what to do as no one mentioned plans for the day.She figures since she came in with Leylin and he seems well liked here, it would be best to stay in the inn unless accompanied with someone until she is better known and trusted. She comes down in her everyday cloths with a book and her lute in hand.

She orders breakfast and settles in by the fire. She reads her book as she eats and once done she practices singing some songs while playing her lute while going back to her book as she takes breaks from singing as she waits on the rest of the group.

Letharia decides that a few elvish tunes would be in order.

Bebaral will awake and mosey downstairs. and has some breakfast and awaits for the others.

— Greetings, Sildar. We pinpointed his current location to be there... I take out the map and show Sildar the approximate region where my mystical arts were pointing at. If everything is ready and no emergency arises, we will get some supplies and set out before midday. Do you have anything to add? Was town quiet while we were gone?

Townmasters Hall:


Sildar nods approvingly, "I wish I had something to offer you in assistance but I'm afraid the best I can do is pray for your speedy and safe return with Gundren and hopefully his brothers. They have not been heard from since before we ventured out from Neverwinter. I fear they too are caught up in this nefarious plan. The town has bounced back from underneath the oppression of the Redbrands and life carriers on."


Stonehill Tavern

The patron's of the Tavern are slow to warm up but the time Letharia has finished her first song the people are either singing along or at least taking note of the Bard's performance. Bebaral see's the entire "show".

— Good. I hope that 'Orc problem' isn't something bad, but regardless - I'm off to gather my allies. I nod to Sildar and leave for the inn.

I wake up to Letharia's mesmerizing voice and quickely head downstairs to take my breakfast while admiring her performence. I'll go join Bebaral as his table when I see him.
— What an intriguing character... well, an intriguing team actually. We have a well-meaning dark elf and that strange sentient golem. I'm not sure we had time to discuss about our mutual skills and background, so would you mind sharing some of your interests into magics with me?

Nine exits the room where it "slept" and sits at a table next to his halfling companion. Fair morning, the construct says with a nod as it sits down to the conversation.

Letharia continue to play as she is happy that people are liking her performance. Her book and her food forgotten on her small table.

"Morning," bebaral says to Nine,

He listens to the bits left for the music. As it reprieves, "Not bad playing." Bebaral says as he finishes the last of his food.

As you continue breaking your fast, Leylin arrives at the Stonehill Tavern.

Bebaral has some business to attend. "Nine seek me out to the west of town if we are ready to leave." Bebaral busses his breakfast and heads out to meet his 'friend'.

  Music and song are heard even from outside inn's doors, I notice while approaching. Pushing door aside, I enter and first move to the innkeeper, asking for a hot drink since the weather isn't getting any warmer outside. While waiting I see Bebaral leaving. Not showing any reaction to that, I stand there, leaning on the wall. After obtaining the mug, I approach the table with my companions.

— So, you all are up. Did Bebaral leave our group for good, or...? I pause and look at others.

Letharia seeing that everyone was together and curious of why Bevaral just left, decides to join the rest of the group. She finishes her song she was on and gets up. She give a little bow to those she sees watching her performance and says, Thank you for listening.

She then gathers her book and what's left of her food and joins the rest of the group grabbing an empty chair, Hey guys, what's up?"

"Thank you, I had a great teacher and a good deal of time while I was living in Longsaddle."

Bebaral
It takes you a little but of searching but you eventually find Daran wandering in his apple orchard. When he spots you nods in recognition and approaches you, "Ah greetings friend, how goes your adventuring?"

Bebaral

Daran seems generally pleased with your report despite the limited information. The two of you walk back to Daran’s house as you discuss your findings. When you reach the house he invited you in and goes over to a writing desk and begins to write something.
"I’ve been out of the adventuring game for a while now but I still have some contacts." He finishes his writing and seals the letter and hands it to you. "If you ever find yourself in need of help in Yartar, give this letter to a man by the name of Teggins Wordsworth. He’ll provide any help he can. Thank you for your assistance."

You take the note and notice the seal is that of a sword held by its blade.

Bebaral will thank him for his hospatality and head back to the taven in the hopes that the crew hasn't left yet.

Letharia goes upstairs and gets dressed in armor and gathers her things

— Let's not be too hasty here. We need to check our equipment first and plan to obtain some supplies so that we won't be hindered by the weather on our journey. I raise my hand to stop Spark. Have you mastered that staff's magic? Can it really offer better protection than my armor? If so, I would rather wear something warmer... Also, how are we on the magic items?— As for those scrolls, I think that only you and our missing halfling friend are able to use them... Well, Letharia might use the 'Charm' one...

Bebaral takes his him heading back to the inn enjoying the thoughts in his head.
He enters to see the troupe at the tables. "Oh well, I'm glad you guys didn't leave without me yet." he chuckles. "So what's the plan now? Cleaning weapons it seems?" He takes out his dagger and places it on the table too.

Letharia returns dressed back in her armor.Did I miss anything?"

— We're discussing our preparations for the resque mission... I snap my fingers and cast Prestigiditation to clean Bebaral's dagger. Also distributing what magical items we have... Potions, scrolls, etc.

I wouldn't mind a healing potion though I do have a heal memorized. Was there some talk of armor? I have been wanting to get some studded leather.", She says

"Oh indeed thats a bit different then a cleaning."

The only scroll I can use is the charm person one but this treasure is what you have gained so it is up to you.", she says as she sits waiting to here the groups plans.

"The only true thing I have to contribute at this time is my knowledge and skills."

— Do we need to obtain any gear? I'd say the warm clothing is a must. Maybe someone need anything specific?

"Depending on how long we are going to be out, we better make sure we have food as we will use more to keep up our body temperatures and yes warm clothing.", Letharia remarks

"I've blew most of my coins to get down here, I'm a bit strapped But i have enough to get a couple of blankest."

Asking around, you find out Barthen's Provisions carries cold weather gear for the cost of 4gp each.

— I have some coin to spare. I react to Bebaral's confession on lack of funds. Shall we move to Barthen's store?

"If the rumors about the gear is true i should be able to fund for a set of gear."

"thank you for getting the warm cloths for us., Letharia says, she starts to give Leylin a hug but then realizes that might not be the most appropriate thing and back up with a quick "Sorry"
