Yasssssssssss please super, super yes. I'm very, very interested.
Haha, well that's the response every GM wants!

Got any interests that we can work in? Even base tropes?
I'm familiar only with Mage: The Ascension of the mage product line, and while I have glossed over M:TAwk(I know that pride is a really big deal, right? Hubris?), my experience lies more with the other game. That said, I do have potential access to Awakening 2e, and even then I am pretty sure I can get the 1st edition if that's what we're playing.

As for eras, I do prefer contemporaneity- But like, I said the same thing in Whistler's Changeling game and we ended up playing on contemporary nights when I think everyone else may have been kind of leaning to the victorian thingie. So, just to clarify, I'm okay playing in whatever era! I'm not a huge history nerd but I'm more than happy to read more about it if needed.

I like the idea of the game being around the community. Having recurrent NPCs, a place that our characters feel attached to, all of that really helps me, personally, immerse myself.

And while I dig the typical American city because of the many things we can bring to the table(All the social norms that tend to be constantly challenged in the west, especially nowadays, and how our characters as mages fit into this ever-evolving society), I am also super okay with playing in whatever else. Here are a few ideas that I, personally, find appealing:

- Game set at some point in the Soviet Union, diverse cast of mages either accommodating to the USSR or actively resisting it(or in a limbo where backstabbing and alliance making ensues)
- Game set in Taiwan after the Chinese Civil War, with our characters as part of the Republican Chinese Mage faction that is now starting to organize Taiwan as their new home.
- A What If scenario in a nearby future in the EU where concepts like nationality, ethnicity, and etc are very, very muddled. A cast of young mages trying to find and establish themselves in this world is adviced.
- A cast of characters who in the actuality have zero credibility in the mage community for reasons but in the future everyone faces this catastrophic event that is really really bad and they managed to time trip to this specific point(either consciously or physically) and now they have to try to stop it despite everyone considering them scrubs. For whatever reason, they need to gain the community's support to try to avoid the future.
- Any apocalypse-like scenarios are actually cool to me, either happening before or after, being a surprise or not. The Armageddon from Ascension comes to mind: I'm not sure if Awakening has something like that? And really, this apocalypse staple can be applied on top of any of the other suggestions as well!
Some great suggestions by Lux. Anything seem more or less appealing? Or a different take altogether?

What do you personally feel about the suggestions so far, Qralloq? Obvs everyone has to have fun, and if you give a more personal input, then I'm sure that we as players can understand what you prefer to lean for better. 😁

Apocalypse stories are fun to run because they involve all kinds of crazy extrapolation and speculation. Many of your ideas have that.

The USSR idea is interesting to me because while I've studied some Russian history, I've never set a game there. There are dystopian elements and oppression to really stack odds against the players to challenge their use of their talents.

The China / Taiwan game is probably the most work for me, but still doable. I've run games in the Boxer Rebellion era, or in modern day Hong Kong, but never Taiwan, so that is appealing.

The near future EU one is less appealing, if only because the Vampire: The Masquerade beta test that I ran on GP was in pretty much that same environment, but it didn't really grab me.

The Vision of an Apocalypse mission is neat. I have had the wormings of a novella or short story set in a similar vein, where a time traveler keeps going back to alter things, and then seeing how it plays out. I suppose like the show Travellers but with more of an eye of how things turn out rather than keeping that a mystery.

For my IRL Changeling game, it actually turned out to be a bio-apocalypse when the players wrecked a military bio-weapon facility and wiped out most human life on Earth. Totally unplanned on my part, but ended up interesting to us all as the players attempted to create a new civilization.

I know it may not be possible, depending on the game, but I’d love to explore the cosmology of Mage: The Awakening. I really like the different planes of existence, especially the three Realms Invisible: the Oneiros, Temenos, and Anima Mundi. The shear weirdness of those places would be really interesting and fun to experience, I think. Mages are one of the few characters in the World of Darkness that have spells to access almost any plane of existence. It’d be a shame not to take advantage of that.

One of the best games I ever played was a Mage: The Ascension game where we explored the craziness that was the Umbra. Obviously, however, this kind of game only works if everyone is onboard.

I agree. The cosmology of MtA is awesome. I'm sure that it will be a part of the game regardless of the earthly setting. I'm not opposed to making that the focus if that's what everyone wants.

I have played a lot of Werewolf and some vampire, but I never played Mage. A few months ago I started on Mage the podcast to learn more about Mage. All-in-all my knowledge of MtA cosmology is extremely limited. For that reason, I would LOVE to explore the cosmology.

USSR idea - I have no knowledge about daily life in Russia, but it could be interesting

China / Taiwan / EU - Doesn't interest me

Apocalypse - kind of depends on what kind of apocalypse. I don't care for a biological/zombie apocalypse, but the rise of IA (ala Terminator) or nuclear/post great war could be okay. But what is holding us back from just going into the umbra and live in there?

That could be the thing - we saw apocalypse coming and got our community into a horizon plan (a mage-made place in the umbra, right?), but we can't stay there and have to go back to the real world

And then there is the Victorian era, but I think I'll wait for the book to come out before pushing this any further

I'm not sure which is the Victorian book, but I'm not opposed to a past setting. I ran Victorian Age Vampire on GP (that game is actually still live, we're just transitioning to modern Chicago), so I have a bunch of setting material. I do have Mage: Sorcerers Crusade which is the Renaissance setting book for Mage: The Ascension.

I’m not super keen on an apocalypse setting, but Russia or sometime in the past sounds pretty cool.
Mar 10, 2019 5:12 pm
I like the USSR idea a lot as well, but to clarify, by armageddon I meant events related or similar to the Times of Judgement series, this more specifically. Not a zombie apocalypse or anything like that. x)

As for the other ideas, I'm up to anything really. I've never played on the Crusades setting, but I gotta say that the appeal, for me, in playing in another timeline is experiencing a very different set of standard ideologies, and I feel those times may be more than interesting enough. I'm also not sure how different Awakening's terminology is, so something like the exploration of its cosmology may, potentially, make me feel really lost. Buuut, I'm up for anything, as I said!

I'll echo Thielindra here. I have never been a big fan of apocalypse settings but my vote at the moment would either be for Russia or the Crusades, leaning towards the Crusades. I am similar to Lux in that I like exploring different ways of living and ideologies when I go for more exotic settings. I have no idea about MtA's cosmology either but it isn't something I am opposed to.

Crusades setting is a bit too much like classic fantasy RPG, but anything from the Renaissance and up to 1980'es could be interesting as its uncommon ground for me.

I’m sorry if this was already mentioned, I may have missed it, but which edition of M:tA will we be playing? I’m very familiar with 1e World of Darkness rules, but not so much with 2e. Either is fine, though.
Mar 10, 2019 9:41 pm
Good question King_Moloch. My asumption so far has been Mage: The Awakening 1e. To be clear this is the NEW world of Darkness, not the classic that was Mage: The Ascension. Victorian Age: Mage and The Sorcerers Crusade were both setting books for Ascension, not Awakening. As such, they will provide solid historical period information, but entirely no gameplay information.

Sorcerers Crusade isn't about the crusades, but instead about the explosion of thought during the Renaissance, circa 1300-1600. Russia certainly participated in the Renaissance stuff, so I think it would be a good fit. Maybe circa 1500 CE or so.

So the consensus so far has been a supernatural mystery set in Renaissance Russia with some realm hopping cosmology exploration. Anything to add or fine tune?

Always been a fan of Abyssal Intruders. The Encounters with the Abyss book for M:tA 1e is one of the best WoD books I’ve ever read. They could make for some really good antagonists. Hunting Abyssal Intruders in Renaissance or Soviet Russia has the potential for a pretty epic game. Just an idea.

I know this is early in the process, but any sourcebooks or options that are off limits? I want to starting thinking about my char concept.

I love with that concept! And please please let us know when you can which edition of Awakening we're ultimately going to play with certainty because boyfriend has 2e and while I'll gladly buy 1e for myself, it would be great to know 100% which one it is just in case.

Alsooo a precise date and location would be nice. I mean, it's just so I can really read hard on stuff to be able to make an appropriated character for the era, so no actual rush. It's just because, apparently, Russia expanded a lot during those times.

Sounds good to me, I will take a look at my Renaissance books and see what kind of concept I can come up with. I typically lean towards a Thyrus or Moros character but if no one has any objections, for something different I might try a Mastigos.
Mar 10, 2019 11:30 pm
Ok, so assuming we go with Russia as the setting, here are my initial ideas...

For Renaissance Russia, Stepan Perevernykruchenkoan, an Acanthus Libertine and Cossack who focuses on manipulating luck (or maybe magically enhancing his steed) to win fights.

For Soviet Russia, Tsar Bomba, an Obrimos or Moros Arrow who draws on Cold War-Era fears about radiation to terrorize his enemies.

Let's go with first edition as I don't have any of the 2e materials and don't know what might have changed. If there are good rule changes, I'd be happy to incorporate them as house rules on a case by case basis.

I like the political turmoil of the short lived reign of Grand Princess Elena. The mother to Ivan the Terrible, she rules as both a bulwark against the Abyss, and ultimately the mother of a monster.
System: Mage: The Awakening 1e
Setting: Moscow, 1537
Theme: Lovecraftian mystery horror set in Renaissance Russia with some realm hopping cosmology exploration centered around incursions from the Abyss.
Mar 12, 2019 8:28 am
I know nothing about Moscow 1537, can you tell me a bit more, please. In my character creation, I feel that I'm drifting out in the woods and folklore, as this is something I can relate to, but that does not fit political turmoil and big-city theme. So I need to start over

I'm having a hard time getting into the setting

That's totally fair. I've left you in the woods here, so to speak. I'll post an introductory scene this evening to give you some hooks and setting information.
