With Makisig as your guide, you make your way west into the Q'sulth foothills. It soon becomes obvious that his estimate of "not two days" travel is based on the tikbalang's swift and lengthy strides. Though your guide is skilled, it will likely take you at least three days to make the westward climb and southward traverse burdened with two caged rats and Ybus' overloaded pack. Makisig seems genuinely curious about where you're from, and all the places you've been - an attitude, he says with a chuckle, that's unusual for the insular tikbalang.
OOC:
Now's the time for any questions you might have for Makisig about tikbalang society, the Council of Elders, the war with the kalding, or what have you.

Urban shifts his shoulder straps again to center the weight after the shift in the climb. The heavy cage sitting high on his back pack rattles over, back into position but tossing Wormtongue around a bit. Urban is used to the weight of the cage now, but it can tilt strongly when it is not centered.
OOC:
Enjoying Brawny Feat, with carrying capacity as a LARGE Creature.
Topping the hill, Urban calls forward to Makisig, "Tell me again about who leads the kalding. Do they have a high priest or dark cultic order?"

Erden rides most of the time on Baracus' strong shoulders. "Yes, learning some more about these kalding might be a good place to start if we plan on helping out."
Apr 9, 2019 5:23 pm
Ybus has his Unseen Servant assist with portage, even as he lags behind the party.
Apr 9, 2019 5:43 pm
Rydler doesn't assist at all; he hangs out in the back, keeping Ybus some company.
Apr 9, 2019 11:58 pm
Baracus has been fasting this entire time, trying to purge the sickness he contracted while battling the Rat God. Between hauling the caged ROUS up the mountain pass and not eating, his body is looking a little gaunt. Carrying Erden is no burden, however.

Spiritually, he finds himself coming to terms with seeing his father. Although he was not sure what to make of it at first, he has decided not to think about it. This he knows: his path is true, as are the friends he walks it with. And so, with a light spirit and a ragged body, he listens about this new foe, these kalding.

What better life could there be in the whole wide circle of the world?

So pumped for Ep 3!

"The kalding are led by a circle of shamans. Foul necromancers. These worshippers of Kaliya-Te hate all life. We tikbalang protect life. The goatmen dwell in holes they carve out of dead rock. Even stone has life - did you know that? The goatmen kill it with rites of fire and blood." Makisig runs his palm reverently across a random rock as he walks past. "The kalding are carrion-eaters, and will hang a fresh kill up to rot before they feast on it. We have warred since time immemorial, but now something has changed. They have opened up a portal of some sort, and have brought something terrible into the world. A ravenous monster that feasts on everything in its path. And now I've learned those rat-men built another portal in Pradesh. Did you say there were more? This is troubling news. We must tell Apo Mai'ngor of this. Our chieftain is wise, and will know what to do."

"There's another ravenous monster coming up this path," Ybus says to himself. He whistles a sea shanty as he walks.

Though the travel through the beautiful highlands is joyous, Baracus is eager to take to this new battlefield. If indeed what Makisig spoke about the Kalding was true, it would be a pleasure to strike a crippling blow against their ranks. Baracus particularly pays attention to the ravenous monster that feasts on everything in its path.

"Just as we slew the demon Numspa, just as we tossed the Rat God down the well, so too will we find ourselves in the path of this monster, and woe to any monster that tries to devour the PHULES."

"No worries, Makisig," Erden assures their new friend, "Whatever terrible thing they've brought into the world, I'm sure we'll be able to help shove it back into its dark hole."
Apr 16, 2019 7:40 am
Urban listens intently at the explanations given by Makisig and the exchange that follows.

Slow to speak, Urban keeps his thought to himself. A terrible monster that devours all. Could this be the dark force that nearly overwhelmed Urban when he was adrift in the place beyond the portal?

"The Fools? That is an odd name for an able warband like yours." Makisig chuckles. "I did not witness the fight, but I saw the aftermath, and it was enough to tell me you are formidable."

Makisig's mien turns sour. "My warband was formidable as well. But the accursed goatmen bested us. If only we had all been slain. No, they gave us to the rat-men, who did...horrible things to us in their laboratories." The tikbalang's voice quavers, and you can see him making a conscious effort to not look at the caged rats.

"I am ashamed to have survived."
Apr 16, 2019 4:33 pm
"Unspeakable," whispers Ybus. "We dare not speak it."
Apr 16, 2019 5:49 pm
Makisig jerks a thumb at Ybus and turns to the rest of you. "Is he always mouthing off like that? The Elders are unlikely to find it amusing."
Apr 16, 2019 6:06 pm
Ybus grins, and says with pride, "I have many mouths! Some are more offensive!"
Apr 17, 2019 2:02 am
Makisig tosses his mane and is quiet after that, no doubt brooding about the fate of his fellows he feels he ought to have shared. The tikbalang warrior no longer offers conversation, but readily answers any further questions you might have.

Pushing ever southwestward and steadily climbing, you thread a convoluted series of hidden ravines and switchback defiles Makisig names "Bitukang Manok," which translates to "chicken's intestines."

Night falls, your first in these mountains. It's brutally cold as you make camp, but Makisig suggests forgoing a fire. This night, all six moons are obscured by clouds limned in purple. Very few stars can be seen, but you do make out the constellation of The Veil. It is an auspicious night for secrets.

Fire, or no? Watch order (gimme Perception rolls in advance)? Any special preparations? Any more questions for Makisig?

Baracus is very curious about Makisig's people and their struggle. He shares with him his weapons, showing his father's axe with pride, and the tricky knife, the First Sword, with humour.

How do the goatmen - these Kalding - fight? How do you tikbalang best them?

Baracus will take the first watch, indifferent to the cold, and staring at the gorgeous night sky, wondering where Acheron is.

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+2)

(13) + 2 = 15

Erden and Timear will take second watch.

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+1)

(11) + 1 = 12

Timear Perception (Advantage) - (1d20+3, 1d20+3)

1d20+3 : (9) + 3 = 12

1d20+3 : (4) + 3 = 7

Apr 17, 2019 4:35 pm
Ybus spends the entire evening awake and drooling over the thought of chicken intestines simmering in a vinegary sauce seasoned with garlic.
OOC:
I'll assist everyone's watch so they have Advantage on Perception. I'll add my own Perception roll in case I end up on watch by myself.

Rolls

Perception - (1d20+5)

(5) + 5 = 10

Apr 17, 2019 5:23 pm
It is both comforting and unnerving to Baracus that Ybus never sleeps.
OOC:

The 15 still stands. I guess Ybus was more distracting than helpful :)
