Questions on mechanics and rules

Apr 8, 2019 2:59 pm
Any questions on game mechanics should be posted here. Note that we will be using standard 7e rules, so this is probably more for newcomers to the game and genre.

Note that, given the size of the adventure, I will be creating an Agent's Notes & Collected Evidence thread to collate all important and relevant information.

Do you have an idea of where to find a pdf copy of the core book?

Legally? You can get one at Chaosium (the publisher), or at Drivethrurpg here

To be honest, though, it's not absolutely necessary that you have a copy, as there's a free quick start manuals at Chaosium here, and any more detailed questions you might have can probably be answered by other on here.

Unfortunately that quick start manual does not contain any gear or weapons information. How should we handle that? And because I like to bring realism to my game I still need to know the year in which we will be playing. Hate to bring a weapon developed only after the 1950's to a 1930's game.

I haven't thorougly checked to make sure it matches the PHB, but there's a table for gear/equipment listed here. I can also photocopy from the PHB if need be.

Regarding the year this takes place in, I updated the game description, but it begins January 1925 in NYC.

Would you allow the War experience package on p61 of the player's guide?

I don't have it in front of me, but it's something to the effect of having reduced sanity in exchange for more skill points, right? Should be fine. Just keep in mind that your age would need to be sufficient to have served in whatever conflict you put in your backstory.

I’ll look at this when I get home and have an ipad or something bigger than a phone.

People involved in WWI were often much younger than we’d like to admit. 14-16 was not unheard of.

Weapons available in 1925 I’m sure there’s a good number of websites you could simply punch in a date. Mauser 98, Lee Enfield, 1911-Colt .45, broom handled Mauser, S&W revolvers, Webly? Revolvers, BAR, Vickers, Lewis gun, MG-08... etc etc etc.

I'm asking for the groups advice. I have two potential character ideas, but I not sure which one to choose.

A. A soldier from The Great War, that mow is kind of like a hired gun/muscle.

B. A big game hunter, who's fairly wealthy and has been hunting all around the world. Within his travels he's seen some interesting sights and has taken to learning archeology or anthropology to understand them better.

What do you guys think?

I like the drama and history attached to a veteran of the Great War.

Are we rolling stats or doing a point build? The quick start rules have flat points, the obsidian portal site wants rolls... my little brain can’t handle the options... descends into madness... YOU DIED!

Where is this players guide? The Chaosium DriveThru book? Oh, nevermind I found it here...

Great War vets are likely to be dime a dozen in France and Commonwealth countries, they’re more likely to be rare from the USA. The US didn’t enter the war until pretty late. I do like the idea of a veteran.

Thanks everyone, I'll go with The Great War Veteran. I'll work on the sheet and have it finished by tonight.

I started punching in skills and they all vanished when I saved it, I’ll give it another shot tonight.

In the War time package, I have an option of taking either an injury/ or phobia/mania. Given that he fought in the Great War, what would be a good scar/injury to reflect a -1 to damage and build? After adding his attributes together that's what I ended up with for damage bonus and build.
