I want to gm a fate game on the site, but I don't know what the theme should be. Does anyone have any ideas for a game they would like to see?

Lots of options...I'd be down for just about anything really. "Fantasy" is probably my go to...but then that is a very deep well in and of itself. Urban Fantasy, High/Epic Fantasy, Sci-fi fantasy...anything really that has a supernatural element.

I have never done any urban fantasy... That could be cool :D

Say Shadow of the Century, and I'm there with bells on.

I'm game to try almost any setting.

would love to learn that system if you have an open spot

I could run an urban fantasy game I think. In that genre, I like the All myths are real trope, à la American Gods or Dresden Files, and I also like there being some sort of Masquerade, fantasy creatures living secretly among humans in an otherwise ordinary world. I think I want to play in core rules, without bringing in a full setting, so I'll probably not just run a Dresden Files game (I've only actually read one of the books, so I don't know if I could do the setting justice).

Are there any other setting aspects you'd like to see? Or would you rather play with different aspects?

(For newcomers to fate, these aspects are true facts about the setting. I'll refer to them while planning, and in game they can be referenced for bonuses or compelled to make the party's life more difficult)

Yeah, I think American Gods was the first Urban Fantasy I read, well it is the first I remember reading, but there were likely others. (I was late to Harry Potter...didn't read that until after college when the movies were coming out.) And Dresden Files is great, but there is a lot of lore that you might miss if you haven't read all the books so I can support your decision not to run that setting if you aren't comfortable with it.

I can't think of anything specific aspects to add off the jump, but if you narrow down the scope, ideas might come up. I have a ton of character ideas though so when you're ready to put up a synopsis or guidelines, I'll be ready.

perhaps take a look at the game City of Mist

That looks a bit more superhero-y than I'd like for this game, but it does look cool

City of Mist looks interesting, but is a Powered by the Apocalypse system, not Fate based on the quick search i did.

Ok, here is a pitch:

The game is set in the Lord of the Rings universe, 2000 years after the books completed. The Age of Man has well and truly taken hold, and the cities of Gondor and Rohan are vast glittering cities of steel and glass and electricity. The beings of legend, elves and wizards and dragons and balrogs have receded into myth, until a cataclysm in Valinor (Caused by man?) has the once immortal elves fleeing back to Middle Earth. There, they find a society greatly different from when they left, and struggle to adapt to this new world. However, the return of the elves means the return of magic, which must also have a profound effect. Some Elves, devastated by the fall of nature to the wheels of industry, plot to tear down society and its glass cities and return humanity to the stone age. Still others attempt to live among humans, trying to find a new place in the world, while still others retreat to the few green places left in the world, trying to live as they always did, opposed to humanities continual expansion.

That's the world. What kind of story are we telling? Mystery? Cop drama? Epic adventure?

That is an interesting concept right there. What do you see for the PCs? Would they be the elves? Or would the free races be available? What about orcs, goblins and trolls? I immediately thought about a race of green-men, descendants of the Ents, living tree people that were like saplings cut from the greater trees sent into the cities of man to observe and report...but that might be too far from Tolkien's vision for you...

How long have the elves been back? Would some have had time to be integrated into society? Are Dwarves and Hobbits still around?

Mystery is always good, if the PCs have strong connections or we focus on a smaller scale to start, like a neighborhood. But the idea of playing a cop drama, like Bright has a lot of appeal as well, if everyone is willing to make that the focus.

What about the Masquerade? Is that a thing in your vision or does everyone just not worry about it like in Bright? Sorta goes with the Hobbit Dwarf question above.

I thought maybe the elves have integrated themselves by stealth, leading to kind of a secret society/masquerade type idea. For dwarves I feel like they've integrated and becomes great builders using modern technology... And experts at patent law. Hobbits I think have split, into isolated rural communes, very similar to how their ancient cousins lived, and cosmopolitan hobbits who are effectively just smaller humans at this stage. I like the idea of Ent ancestors, but I feel like they would have diminished as magic did, so I'm kind of picturing them like small walking plants, either not very intelligent or at least having a different sort of intelligence (their actions would be hard for others to understand. Almost like how mythological fairies are). You'd find them in places where nature is strong and the touch of man wouldn't be felt, and they diminish further as the land gets developed. Though, the return of the elves may be bolstering them, allowing for larger, smarter ones to grow.

I don't know what to do about orcs. I feel like they need to be dramatically different than Tolkien orcs, or they would have died off long ago. Maybe they just have. It's not really possible to build a society on hatred and destruction.

As far as a timeline goes, I'm open to ideas

This sounds awesome!
I have to agree that orcs would have to either adapt or perish as soon as some technology comes and magic dwindles, but maybe some were able to flee, shut themselves off somewhere beyond Mordor and live a tribal life ever since...

Also Lothlorién and similar places would probably have gone the route of the Amazon and or even most big European jungles: shrunken immensely or completely vanished... Don't think the elves would be all too happy about that.
