Out of Character Chat

Hey everyone, so I will be opening episode one of Jump City today, you can find a short guide to the city in the Thread Jump City a Quick guide, but before I start I wanted to get a certain feel for the group, under the complications a lot of you have listed being gay your race or other similar touchy subjects, I am leaning now towards making this a more realistic experience of being a superhero in today's world, with hate, tough decisions, prejudice, and the like. I would like to know if everyone is ok with this or if I should fall back into the "Saturday Morning Cartoon" category as I originally had planned?

I'm playing an open-minded, free-loving, Caucasian cisgender heterosexual or "Dude". I guess I'll be the minority, and/or the target of several minority groups. You're going to have to take it seriously or the complications won't be complications. When I DM, complications like those are the gunners on the firing squad :)

Im just checking that the group understands the kind of story we are telling.

Since this is a GAME I would prefer that touchy subjects like gender identity or other cultural mores as well skin color be left out of it. This site is not someplace I come to discuss deep, important subjects. It's where I come to have fun. My wife has Fox News on all day long and I get plenty of non fun stuff vicariously throughout the day. I need to focus on this site from time to time to keep my sanity.

Now if you're talking about some animosity between dwarf and elf, that's a different story.

I'm getting the impression from the characters I've seen posted here that the cost of equipment should come out of our Power Points. I didn't see that in the rules anywhere. I've neglected to add any gear to my cs. I will take care of that this afternoon. Didn't Jack say something about not keeping close track of the cost of common gear or was that someone else in another game?

I, personally, am OK with darker elements in the story.
Apr 26, 2019 8:08 pm
Are we talking about dark elements like evil necromancers and demons from the pits of hell or are we talking about elements like politics, religion, race and gender?
Apr 26, 2019 8:28 pm
im indifferent, if it gets to a point where the players are having a hard time then we probably need to reassess.

I’m fine with some heavy, real world subject matter as long as it isn’t the focus of the entire game.

I'll play it either way, just let me know so I can adjust my character sheet appropriately.

I put "secret: in the closet about her sexuality" down as a complication because she's flirty in costume and reserved in her secret identity. I wanted her to face confusion and denial about her attraction to various characters, possibly even villains and other members of the team. I thought it would add an interesting element to the standard superhero issues. I'd prefer that.

But, if the group decides to avoid those kinds of subjects, I can give her a less interesting complication like a phobia so she can just cower in fear sometimes or responsibility to her secret identity accountant job so she has to go to work sometimes or something equally cheesy.

I wrote my complications intending to explore those ideas, so i am on board.

it is not my intention for the real world to become the focus, you shouldn't be spending the majority of your time hiding your sexuality, but if someone were to discover it, it should play a part, especially if you're listing it as a complication.

(Checking my character avatar as well as responding)

Aldrusian, check out the Equipment Advantage/Skill (can't remember which one it is off the top of my head). For every rank you put into it (1 power point = 1 rank), you get 5 equipment points. I put in 4 levels just so that I could have my Batman moment since my character is relatively on the weak side--she's literally more of a team support character that acts as an annoying gnat for enemies to get distracted by swatting at.

Tracey, I think you should play it up as much as you want! That's the type of thing that helps characters feel more alive IMO. And since this is "today's world", sexuality is probably not so much of a complication these days depending on your position in or out of the bible belt, so I wouldn't worry about it ever being an issue. :) I imagine the type of issues that JackJack is suggesting is more in line with like the moral dilemma with.. well, example: what happens when Darkhound is faced with the prospect of saving someone, say a senator or something, who is actively trying to argue for laws that directly impact her minority group? What if Johanna and Tracey gotta save Mike Pence's ass?

Those are just weird obvious examples, and obviously, they're not going to just not rescue a person whose life is in danger, but I think those type of decisions are some part of the heart that DC comics have. What happens when our perceived enemies are the people that need saving?

I am thinking of moral dilemmas mostly yes.

Well, I will let you guys worry yourselves sick about moral dilemmas. Jeffrey will stay out of them. And, regarding equipment, I'll either have to make some adjustments or make do with common items like a plain cell phone and a multi-tool. He's made his living doing illusions for large crowds and he continues in that vein as Captain Mystical although now he knows that magic is a real thing not just an illusion. His superpowers are not terribly overpowering. He can fly but not at the speed of a bullet, maybe as fast as a racing bicycle. He can cast a mystic blast not unlike a pistol but without the device and ammunition. He can shape water and light but not whole oceans or small stars but enough to bend light around himself so as to seem to be invisible or throw the equivalent of a small bottle of water (without the bottle) at a small fire to extinguish it. And, finally, he might be able to macgyver a tool or weapon out of common items he finds around him but that is based on real learning in real life outside the realm of superheroes. Check his history on the character sheet for details.

For everyone I uploaded an edit of the map with better quality so it should be easier to read.

Should I make different forums based on what location you chose to go to?

That's up to you really. If you think it easier to track one page verses 6 or whatever, that's fine by me.

One of the games I'm in puts the relevant character names in bold above each section, which are separated by linebreaks.

I find multiple permission-locked threads really hard to follow as a player, and hard to manage as DM. If you're okay with us "knowing" stuff, and we all agree to do our best to not metagame, it's good all in one thread.

My one request is maybe that you update everyone at the same time. If there's something you want to keep secret, just use a note.
