Alira answers Nic just before the announcement.

The head of security on my old ship was great, but not a lot older than I am. So, if I wanted to advance, I would need to transfer. I put my name in expecting it to take months or years. This opened up within a few weeks.

Alira listens to the announcement .

Thank you, it has been an odd job interview, but I hope a good one.

She raises her glass.

Happy birthday!

bowlofspinach says:
"I don't know. Look at the meat or something", Helena says with a quiet voice. "I know how Cass' speech sounded, it was bad, but let me try to do some damage control here. Her opinion of you really changed during the Veron mission. She's leaving the Potential because she doesn't want to compete with you any more. She did not mean to embarrass you or make you look bad in front of your crew. Cass might not be able to express it well but she likes you."
This last statement prompts an involuntary snort of laughter from Cass, but Helena seems sincere. With an apologetic grin, Cass says, "Sorry about that. It's just that if you'd asked me to provide a scale of your sister's likely feelings about me, it wouldn't have gone above 'grudgingly tolerates.' But I appreciate the candor."

"Sometimes I think she only grudgingly tolerates me as well but that's just how she is", Helena replies with a laugh. "When you go back there, would you mind getting her a new drink? Preferably synthehol. She doesn't need to get too drunk too quickly again."
Jun 8, 2019 7:02 pm
"Sure," Cass says automatically, then cocks her head. "Again?"
Jun 8, 2019 7:11 pm
Helena winks and says: "No comment"
Jun 8, 2019 7:29 pm
"I'll see your 'no comment' and raise you a 'don't ask,'" Cass says with an answering wink. Then she goes to the replicator and orders a very nice synthehol cocktail Moira had taught her about. She returns to her seat and places the drink in front of Cassandra.

"Compliments of the house," she says cheerily.

After Cassandra finishes her announcement, everyone goes back to their conversations.
Cassandra thanks Cass for the drink when she returns and when Cass sits back down, Cassandra asks in a conversational tone: "Have you talked to Lt. Vitan yet?"

Before any of the conversations can pick up any speed and before Cass can reply, the group's attention is drawn to the side of the house as three people suddenly show up there, two men and one woman. They are all wearing casual civilian clothes and they walk into the garden without saying anything at first. They keep some distance to the table and stop walking a few meters apart from each other. The man in the middle - tall, fit, dark hair with some grey streaks - looks around the gathered group, his eyes resting longer on some people than on others. Cass can feel his gaze on her for a while before it moves on.
"Good evening", he says with a loud, cold voice. "I hope we're not interrupting anything important. This will only take a minute."
Those around her notice that Vega curses quietly and sinks down in her chair a little bit as if trying to make herself less visible.

Cass notes Vega's reaction to the newcomers and figures that this incident is some form of chickens coming home to roost. (She winces internally at the accidental poultry reference.) She glances at Cassandra and Helena, waiting to see how they react, as the hosts of the event and residents of the cottage. Her right hand, already in her lap, slides up to rest near the phaser holstered under her blousey top.

Cassandra gets up from her chair and steps between the man and the table. "Who are you and how can we help you?", she asks. Her voice sounds tense.
"We'll be out of your hair in just a minute. We just have a question. Here, let me show you something."
He smiles and reaches behind his back, his eyes carefully observing the gathering around the table.
Jun 9, 2019 4:08 pm
Under the cover provided by the table, Cass removes the phaser from the holster and prepares herself to use it if necessary.
Jun 9, 2019 4:17 pm
Moira readies her upper left thigh flask, one skirt branch, and her lighter if she needs to make a Molotov.
Jun 9, 2019 4:38 pm
In a swift movement, the man pulls out a phaser and points it at Cassandra, who is standing in front of Cass, blocking the man from having a clear shot at her but also blocking Cass from having a clear shot at him.
Right after he pulls his phaser, his two companions do the same, the man aiming at Max, the woman at Helena, who is still standing at the barbecue.
"I don't recommend playing the hero", the man announces, not to anyone in particular. He does not seem to have noticed Moira's fiddeling yet or he does not regard it as a threat as he doesn't pay special attention to her. "These phasers are set to kill."
Jun 9, 2019 4:52 pm
"All right, relax," Cass says. "No need for anyone to get hurt. Just tell us what you want." She's still holding the phaser out of sight.
Jun 9, 2019 6:24 pm
Alira looks to see if the woman is the one security is looking for?
She also focuses so she will be ready if she has to beat someone down.
Jun 9, 2019 7:37 pm
The intruders are all in their mid thirties, white and tall with dark hair. The man who has been speaking until now looks almost deliberately scruffy. He has dark beard stubble, black and grey hair that is just slightly messy and a noticeable but not disfiguring scar above his right eye. The other man has a thick beard and no scar but otherwise looks very similar, not in facial structure but with the almost deliberate rough look. The woman fits the same style. Short dark hair, messy but not too much, a small but distinctive scar on her lip. The woman is not the same as the one Alira encountered earlier but she notices that the phasers that the three are carrying are the same model as the one Alira had been threatened with that morning.

The leader of the intruders says: "You two, sit down please. Everyone, no sudden movements. Nobody has to die if you do exactly as we say."

Cassandra sits down at the head of the table again, her hands raised to show that they're empty as she's moving. "Nobody is resisting, just let us know what you want", she says.
Helena also sits down at the table, next to Cassandra on her designated seat. Barely moving her lips and out of the PCs audible only to Zephyr and Cass, she whispers: "I have a phaser under the table."
Jun 9, 2019 7:43 pm
Nodding almost imperceptibly, Cass says in the same manner, "Mine's out and ready."
Jun 9, 2019 8:52 pm
The leader nods towards the other man who lowers his phaser and reaches into the bag he is carrying. He pulls out a datapad.
The leader then says: "We need command level spacefleet access codes to give authorization to our little project. Captain Theliak and Commander Cassano, would you mind coming here to help us out?" His eyes focus on Theliak as he calls him out but he doesn't seem to be completely sure which of you is Commander Cassano.
Jun 9, 2019 9:07 pm
Cass raises her hand with a tentative demeanor.

"I... I'm Cassano." She sounds as though she's trying hard to seem unafraid.

Moira stands up.

Dunnae be an idiot, Lieutenant. This isn't a time ta be a hero.

She looks at the men with a steely glare, moving her skirt off her hair and back to her waist.

Well, ah was tryin' ta enjoy mah shore leave, but ah guess it'll hafta wait. Commander Cassano, at yer service. Leave mah crew alone.
