Cass gives a barely perceptible nod of affirmation.
Jun 3, 2019 8:11 pm
"I'll explain", Darcy replies in a quiet voice. "But not yet. I'm sorry, commander."
Jun 3, 2019 8:15 pm
Cass states at her, stunned. "Are you seriously going to make me order you?"
Jun 3, 2019 8:25 pm
Cassandra turns to Alira and asks: "Can you excuse us for a second?"
Then she steps to the side with Cass and says: "The whole reason for this party is that I want to tell you. I'm just asking you to let me do it my way." She scratches her neck and looks over to the other guests. "I'm only waiting for Borealis to arrive."
Jun 3, 2019 8:37 pm
"Cassandra, you disregarded protocol completely by leaving me out of the process. Then I am blindsided by finding out from the candidate that we're looking for a new chief of security. There's nothing about this that is acceptable to me." Cass shakes her head resignedly. "It's as if you chose the most embarrassing to me, disrespectful way you could think of to handle this - whatever this is."
Jun 3, 2019 8:48 pm
Cassandra sighs. She looks unhappy with the way Cass is taking this situation. "Our chief of security has been critically damaged and had to be removed from his assignment. I have been filling in for him for now but I never agreed to take the position permanently. We had to look for a new security chief anyway. And I have the right to request reassignment." She pauses and looks over to Alira. "I wanted to leave the Potential in good hands and she may be inexperienced but I know she will be a better fit for the Potential than I ever was. I'm sorry if you feel disrespected but that was not my intention."
Jun 3, 2019 8:57 pm
Cass stands motionless, staring at Darcy for the second time. "I didn't know you'd requested reassignment. And I feel disrespected because, as acting captain, all personnel changes are supposed to go through me. You quote me protocol day in and day out, so I know you're aware of that. I..." She stops and runs a hand through her hair in frustration. "You could've just trusted me, Cassandra. But why start now, I guess. Just send me Alira's personnel file so that I can at least make an informed hiring decision."

Cass turns to walk away.
Jun 3, 2019 9:13 pm
"It is not even my job to look for a replacement. My only responsibility as far as spacefleet regulations go, is to inform you of my transfer. Which I was going to do today. I learned to trust you, Cassano, that's why I'm leaving. And that's why I was looking for a replacement. To leave you in good hands." Her voice is rising as she is getting agitated but she stops herself and then adds with a quieter, resigned voice: "I will send you her file right away."
Jun 3, 2019 9:16 pm
Alira can see that at least part of the argument is about her, so she chats with Lisa.

So Lisa, what about you? Where are you from?
Jun 4, 2019 5:21 am
Alira

"I'm from...", she hesitates, probably remembering Darcy's comment, and then says: "from Earth. I've only left it a couple of times before joining the fleet. My parents were against me joining. They said we have everything we could possibly need on Earth so why should I explore the stars?"
Jun 4, 2019 5:38 am
Alira lets out a big laugh.

look at us, disappointing parents across the galaxy.
Jun 4, 2019 4:22 pm
"Yes, Julia mentioned that you were captain of the Neptune. I don't imagine you're in one place for very long. That must make it hard to maintain family ties," replies Alex. "Are you worried about that at all? With Julia?"

She might have been able to maintain a non-accusatory tone with her daughter, but there's a little bit of challenge in her tone here. Not unfriendly, simply expecting a good, solid answer.

Alira

"I don't think they're too disappointed. They just don't understand", Lisa says. "They've never had that urge to go out into the galaxy and explore... Do you know what I mean?"

Moira

"You don't look like a terraformer to me", Nic says to Julia. "All the TFs I've met have been pompous older men that couldn't stop bragging about their greatness. All two of them, I mean."
Julia gets ready to reply but before she can, she gets distracted. Her eyes are focused on the conversation between the two Casses. "They don't look like they're enjoying the party.", she says. "Who's that woman with Cass?"

Alex

"I'm very worried about that. Being so far apart from my daughter is already very painful, so believe me when I say that this relationship was not a light decision on my part." His tone is very serious. "I should not tell you about this but... something may change in the near future, which would allow me to spend much more time with Julia."
Jun 4, 2019 6:09 pm
Alex lifts an eyebrow, tilts her head slightly. Curiosity piqued, she says, "Well, now you have to tell me, with a lead in like that."
Jun 4, 2019 6:18 pm
Moira nods.

Commander Cassano and Lieutenant Commander Darcy. Ah dunnae know what tha issue is. An' ah'd recommend not buttin' in.

She shoots a look at Nic.

Well, we aren't in tha 20th century anymore. Yeh shouldn't be surprised that there are young charismatic women in terraformin'. She smiles at Julia. What's yer favorite part? An' congratulations, by tha way.

Alex

"I can't tell you any more than that. There might be a change in my career soon", he says dismissively. "You seem to know a lot about Farredan culture, Lloyd. Have you ever been to the Fleet yourself?"

Moira

"When I was very young, I was living on the ship that my mom was serving on. I don't remember what it was called right now. One time we visited the Tunak colony while the planet was in the early stages of terraforming and I could watch the atmosphere change from the observation deck. It was the most amazing thing I've ever seen even to this day." Her eyes seem to sparkle with excitement as she recalls this memory, before she catches herself and returns to normal. "But why does every conversation at this party get so personal?", she asks with a laugh. "What music do you two listen to?"
Jun 4, 2019 6:57 pm
"I hope you can understand that you're asking me to trust you with my daughter's continued well-being and happiness, while you're keeping this a secret," Alex replies. "I won't stop Julia from doing what she wants. I'm not sure I could. But if given the choice, I'd rather be happy about the situation, rather than mistrustful. I'm sure neither of us -- you and I -- want to start out that way, do we?"

Moira

"That sounds very... interesting", Julia replies. "What about you, Nic?"
"This and that. I don't have a strong preference. Anything except for Merengi ballads. I've heard enough of those for two lifetimes."

Alex

"I know how you feel, Lloyd, but I can't tell you anything more because nothing is certain yet. I have been in contact with an admiral who has some plans that might or might not involve me. I'm currently helping him with a project and if everything goes well, he might help me to a position that would allow me more time with Julia." He pauses and his red eyes make contact with Alex'. "There is no reason to be mistrustful of me. I would never do anything to hurt her."
