Max opens his mouth to speak, notices Moira's expression and simply says: "It's nice to meet you."
Julia and Theliak return the greeting and Julia leads him to the table to sit down on one of the chairs. Cassandra asks everyone what they want to drink. Julia and Theliak ask for Earth whiskey, Max for an Iced Velissian Tea, specifying that he does not want it spiked.

After Moira responds, Helena Darcy comes up to her, carrying a glass of wine she has just refilled for herself. Her unscarred cheek is already lightly blushed from the alcohol she's had so far. "You're the Potential's engineer, right?", she asks in a conversational tone.

Julia speaks quietly with Theliak for a moment, then she walks up to Alex. "Thank you for inviting us. I know you will like Maen"
May 31, 2019 12:10 pm
Moira gives Cassandra Darcy the orange liqueur and mentions in a pleasant tone that she'd love to catch up later, and thanks her for inviting them all. She's drinking a plain screwdriver, and playfully salutes Julia and Theliak when they order whiskey. She assures them she'll share something interesting with them later.

When Helena comes up, she smiles. Ah, yeh must be Darcy's sister. Pleasure ta meet yeh! Yeah, ah'm tha engineer. Thinkin' of shiftin' gears a smidge, though ah'll never be able ta leave the engineerin' room entirely. What's on yer mind?

"Finally someone to talk to", Helena says with a smile. "I've been out of tech for over a year now and I miss my engines. I'm actually working on a model right now" She points towards a large structure hidden under a large cloth cover outside the party area but still in the backyard of the cottage. "But I can't get it to work."
May 31, 2019 12:50 pm
She can't hide the way her face lights up as she reflexively starts walking over to the engine.

Do yeh know what tha problem may be?
May 31, 2019 1:07 pm
Helena walks with you and takes the cover off her engine model. It's a basic design, similar to the Potential engine but simpler. It has been scaled down to be around two meters high and wide.
"I've followed the design specifications exactly, except for the scale. And I had to replace the antimatter chamber with a battery of course. That obviously won't actually give me the power to go to Warp but it should be enough to give me some Impulse output but something seems to be wrong. I assume it's because of the battery but I can't find the mistake."
She sounds very excited to be able to talk to someone about this. As you know, her sister doesn't care much about engines.
May 31, 2019 1:38 pm
She is pretty, though. Are yeh goin' ta take this in tha air?
OOC:
I'm going to see if I know what's up. I'm adding "help" for her insights, but you can disregard if that doesn't work.

EDIT: For LF, can I just see what's up with it?

OOC:
Four dice and not a single success ':D You do get an LF, though.
I'll let you use the LF to find out what's wrong. Let's just say there's a component built into the engine that only works with extremely high power, more than the battery can provide, which needs to be switched out. Only there's obviously more technobabble involved in the solution
"I would need to get a permission for that and I don't feel like bothering with bureaucracy. I just want to get it running, then maybe do some modifications. All just for fun."

Moira nods. Looks like yeh dunnae have enough power. Tha flux joiner needs at least a kilowatt an' a half at this scale. But since yer routing power through tha transistors still, well, they aren't amplifyin' tha signal enough when they're this small.

If Helena is even half decent at reading faces, she can tell Moira's frustrated that she can't explain more, and distracted about something.
May 31, 2019 2:12 pm
Helena's face lights up as she realizes her mistake. "In my defense, I wouldn't have made that mistake two years ago. Thank you for your help!", she says as she accesses the small computer terminal next to her model. Once she is done with it, she shuts it down again and leans against it. She takes a sip from her wine and her eyes focus on Moira. "You look distracted, is something bothering you? Is it because I'm making you work on your shore leave? If so, I'm sorry, I just get excited about this stuff."

No, no, yer fine! Tinkerin' has always helped me relax. Ah get it. Totally. Nah, ah'm just...

She glances back toward the crew. Better to tell someone, right? And telling someone who isn't on the ship might be better. An engineer with a new gig, who has the perspective....

Quit tryin' ta convince yerself, Moira.

She drinks some more of her screwdriver and sighs.

Ah'm switchin' ta counselin'. Ah just... Ah'm called "RC" fer mah work on Tha Bull. That was a good 15 years ago. An' ah keep tha ship runnin' fine, but under duress, well, ah'm the lass who thinks with'er heart. An' tha tech has changed enough that ah'm havin' a hard time gettin' away with as many shenanigans as ah used ta. It's like seein' an old flame and realizin' they've changed. Tha old motions dunnae work anymore...an' ah've hurt people. We need a counselor. Ah figured it was safer. Gotta help mah crew somehow.

She is subconsciously rubbing the same cheek that Cass had burnt off. It'd be different if it had been Moria instead.
May 31, 2019 4:40 pm
"RC? Whatever that stands for, be glad you didn't serve under Thompson. When I was his chief engineer, he only called me Goldie - because I wore a gold uniform. You met him during your last mission, Cass told me." She takes another sip of her wine, then puts it down on the computer terminal. "Engineering is dangerous. Sooner or later, someone is going to get hurt because of you. I burned my face off - twice - but I was lucky because it was just myself. But if you want to switch your job just so you don't endanger other people, counselling is not the right choice. Just because you can't see the wounds there, that doesn't mean they are any less severe." She pauses for a moment, before quickly adding: "I'm sorry for being so gloomy. That's why I'm not a counselor. Which reminds me, have you spoken to your counselor about it? The blond boy?"
May 31, 2019 4:46 pm
Helena's comment surprises her. She knew it wasn't just drinking and primal screaming, but she hadn't thought of it that way.

What. Tha talky one? Tha lieutenant ah get ta report ta now? Ah cannae say ah have. Ah'm more worried he's gonna shove his foot down his throat. What kind'a counselor would ah be if ah needed counselin', anyway?

"Every counselor, I would think. They are the ones that have to deal with everyone else's problems every day in addition to their own." Helena takes a deep breath, then picks up her drink again and slaps Moira's back. "But tonight is for having fun. Try not to think about this too much. Tomorrow, if you want, I can put you in contact with my station counselor. He's amazing, maybe it'll help you to talk about this with him if you don't feel comfortable with your new boss."
May 31, 2019 4:59 pm
Moira nods. Thanks. Ah appreciate that.

What is this? She's not the kind of person who "needs to talk"....But she did elect to keep her bite scar. Ah well. Helena is far more approachable than Cassandra. Moira smiles.

So. What else have yeh been tinkerin' with?
OOC:
I figure this is a good spot to stop formal RP, just seemed like a nice transition. Thanks, Spinach :)

OOC:
That was lovely, you two.

Alira walks around introducing herself and Lisa to anyone they haven't met. When they reach Theliak she bows instead of taking the proffered hand.

No disrespect intended Theliak, but I come from the other end of the gravity well, and I don't want to even take a small chance at causing distress.
May 31, 2019 6:48 pm
Alex excuses herself, suggesting to Cass that she's invited to come introduce herself as well, and approaches Julia and Maen. She addresses Julia first, leaning forward to give her a light hug and a kiss on the cheek. "I'm so glad you could make it," she says, and seems honest about it too. Then she turns to the Farredan, and extends her hands, palms up and relaxed so that Maen can lay his hands on hers. "The stars welcome you. Light, air and water to you and yours, Theliak," she says in the traditional Farredan greeting to new arrivals to their ship.

OOC:
LOL I wish I had witnessed that before I bowed
May 31, 2019 7:04 pm
OOC:
Yeah, my bad... it's been a morning. I should've posted that a long time ago. :/
May 31, 2019 7:12 pm
Cass watches Alex perform the Farredan greeting, then holds out her hand to Julia. "I'm very happy to meet you when I can actually form rational thoughts and am not a walking mass of alcohol-soaked tissue. Commander Shawna Cassano - Cass to anyone who isn't embarrassed to consider me a friend."
