Side RP: Lunch

Day 2, before the beach thread

After waking up in the morning, Alex messaged Julia to ask her to meet under better circumstances than they had met the previous night. The two agree to meet for lunch for an hour before Julia has to go on duty.
As Julia knows the planet better than Alex does, she suggests a small cafe on the side of town away from the beach.

Alex arrives there at the specified time, feeling a bit hungover but in a much better condition for important conversation than she had been last night. There are three people at the cafe, not counting Alex and the staff, two of them wearing spacefleet uniforms, the third just casual clothes. Alex already has time to order something before Julia arrives a few minutes late, wearing a gold spacefleet uniform with the collar marking of an ensign

Alex notices that Julia's posture is just a little bit stiff as she sits down at Alex' table. "How's the head?", she asks with a grin.
May 23, 2019 5:32 pm
"Thank the stars for modern medical care," Alex says, though her quieter than usual voice and the faintly pained smile she provides suggests that whatever medical care she availed herself of didn't quite do the whole trick. She rubs a hand over her face and smiles. "I'm definitely too old for this."

She spends a long moment taking a (sober) look at her daughter, familiar dry, speculative smile on her face. "I can't believe we're both here, in the same place, at the same time. It's been far too long, Jules."

OOC:
You've seen this exact kind of stiff movement before. It looks as if she has just come out of Zero-Gravity training and is readjusting to normal gravity.
"I know. Funny how the universe works sometimes. When I saw you, I was sure you were here because of me." Julia waves at a server who just nods and goes inside. "I listened to your message last night. I feel terrible about missing it when it arrived. Are you okay?"
May 23, 2019 5:47 pm
"I'm fine. I didn't get the worst of it, physically. The science officer on the Potential was actually infected with one of the parasites. He'll be coming to terms with that experience for a while to come, I'm sure."

Alex takes a drink of water from the glass on the table. It's nearly empty now. "In hindsight, it was fairly exciting, but I'm not exactly trained for pitched combat on an alien ship. I'd be happy to just get back to doing the talking, not the shooting."

She gestures at Julia. "What about you, though? You have so much news that you haven't caught me up on. You're graduating, apparently you're coming back down the gravity well from zero-g work..." She trails off, and makes a show of thinking. "Seems like there was something else..." The twinkle in her eye, her slightly arched eyebrow, makes her gentle teasing fairly obvious.
May 23, 2019 6:09 pm
"There's nothing to tell. I graduated, big deal. So did you a few decades ago. I'm happy I got this job right after the academy. You know that I always wanted to go into terraforming. I thought I would have to wait years to actually get a TF position." She smiles for a moment, then says: "I havent been working yet today. I was with Maen. I'm not sure how much you know about Farredans but they are accustomed to zero gravity. He can't stay in 1g for extended periods of time so he brought an antigrav chamber that we are living in at the moment. You must have seen it. It's right at the entrance to the cottage village"
May 28, 2019 5:15 pm
There's just enough tension, just enough of a pause, just enough stiffness in tone. Something's unsaid behind Alex's response. "So tell me how the two of you met," she says with a smile. "I didn't even know you were seeing someone. How long have you known each other?"

She signals to one of the servers, and requests a black coffee, strong. She adds as an aside to Julia, "Modern medicine is great, but sometimes the old cures feel the best."
May 28, 2019 5:39 pm
Julia hesitates for a brief moment, then she says: "We met eight months ago. I was still at the academy. He came in to talk to my professor about a project he was working on. Maen is not a terraformer by career but he has a deep passion for it - and especially for stellarforming like they performed here, on the star of Caspera. I was working on my final thesis and we spent a lot of time in the science lab together. It was his first time on Earth. I showed him around and we spent a lot of time together... After he returned to his ship we stayed in contact and... well, here we are."
The server arrives and brings Julia an herbal tea mix, the same thing she used to always drink when she was younger. She thanks the server and puts her hand around the cup as if to warm them, even though it is already very warm here.
May 28, 2019 6:31 pm
Absently, Alex makes nearly the same gesture, putting her own hands around her mug of coffee. Genetics rear their head in funny ways sometimes. "So what is his job, if he's not a terraformer? What does it mean for your career?"

Almost as if it were an afterthought, she adds, "And congratulations on the position here, by the way. I was just telling the commander yesterday when we were on the beach that you would love this place, with all they've done to make it so hospitable. Even before I knew you were already here!"
May 28, 2019 6:49 pm
"He's the captain of the Neptune", Julia replies, her voice filled with pride. "And it shouldn't mean much for my career, aside from the fact that he helped me get the position here. But from here on, I'm planning to make my own way up the career ladder. And yes, I love this planet. It's incredible what they made out of what used to be nothing more than a lifeless rock floating around a dying star."
Julia looks up at the sky for a few seconds before turning back to Alex. "You have been assigned to a new ship as well. The woman you were with yesterday, she's your commanding officer, right? She seems nice - not very strict."
May 28, 2019 8:31 pm
"Well, the crew of the Sigma suffered quite a bit from the encounter with the Verons. The Potential was our rescue, and we worked together well. Commander Cassano did a remarkable job under extreme circumstances. She deserves the chance to not play mother bear for a while, and relax just like the rest of us. She's highly capable in the captain's chair, and I've said as much to Spacefleet."

"The Neptune, though... that's in orbit now, isn't it? It seems like I heard something about it, but..." Alex muses, then waves a hand idly. "A Spacefleet captain, though. That's... going to take him away from here a lot of the time, isn't it?" There's an edge of worry that creeps into Alex's voice.

"I just met her in an awkward moment, I guess. I would like to get a second impression of her.", Julia says.

Her expression turns a bit sad. "I know. We've been talking about that. I will spend my shore leave on the Neptune, he will spend his here but we will be apart a lot." Julia's face lights up as she remembers something else. "I told him that you're on the planet. He said he wants to meet you."
May 28, 2019 8:47 pm
"He'd better!" says Alex with a dry chuckle. "I'm not going to let just anyone marry my only child."

Alex absently traces a pattern on the table with one finger. "You know, one of the Potential's crew is hosting a party tonight. We're encouraged to invite others... would you and Maen be interested in coming? It would give me a chance to meet Maen, and you another chance to meet my new shipmates while they're sober. At least temporarily sober. I can't speak for them once the party starts."
May 28, 2019 9:42 pm
"That sounds great. I'll ask him about it. Send me the location and time and we'll be there. Just one more thing..."
Suddenly, Julia gets interrupted by an announcement over the speakers:
"Attention all guests of Caspera-13. There has been a security breach in the cottage village. If you are currently in the village, go into your cottage. If you are currently in town, go into the nearest building. This is just a safety precaution and there is no danger to anyone. Please stay inside and wait for further instructions."

"That has never happened before", Julia comments. "Should we go inside?"
May 28, 2019 9:47 pm
Alex mouths the words 'just a safety precaution' with a suspicious narrowing of the eyes. "I suppose we should follow protocol. Strange way to go about not making people panic, though."

She picks up her coffee, and gestures toward the door to the inside of the cafe. "What was the one more thing you were going to mention?"

Julia takes her tea mug and walks inside. The two of you sit down at another table. "It's just about his name. It might sound strange to you but you're a diplomat. You should understand different cultures and customs. When you meet him, he will most likely offer you to call him by his core name but until he does, you should call him Theliak. Anything else would be inappropriate."
She looks out the window and asks, half Alex and half herself: "What do you think how long this lockdown will last? I'm supposed to be at work in a bit over an hour."
May 28, 2019 10:40 pm
Alex laughs softly and lays a hand on Julia's shoulder. "He will not be the first Farredan I've worked with, dear. But I appreciate the warning nonetheless, and the name."

She takes a sip of her coffee, and nods in general approval. "Hard to say. A lot depends on what caused it, but I'm sure that if it lasts too long, you'll not be the only one forced to show up late to work." She takes a speculative look around the interior of the cafe.

"I don't suppose you've spoken to your father," she says blandly. The sideways look she gives Julia makes it pretty clear this isn't her favorite subject of conversation.

"I haven't. Not in a long time. I'm going to tell him, though. I want him to be there for the wedding. I wish I could just run into him like I did with you. That makes it so much easier. But unless I somehow end up on Earth, that's unlikely."
May 29, 2019 3:57 pm
"He always was notoriously hard to track down," Alex muses.

For someone so used to knowing just how to act and just what to say in nearly every situation, Alex is surprisingly ill at ease. She starts to pick up her coffee, only to change her mind at the last moment. She shifts in her seat as though she's sitting on a rock and can't quite find the right way to orient herself.

Finally, she asks quietly, "When were you going to tell me, Julia? If providence hadn't placed us both here on this resort at the same time... is it really so hard to tell me that you've even met someone important, not to mention that you're getting married? Am I that hard to talk to?"

On another day, with another, older, previous version of Lt. Commander Alexandra Lloyd, it would have come out as an accusation. Passive-aggressive, probably, and elegantly spoken to drive the maximum amount of guilt home in the fewest number of words. Instead, it sounds as though she is turning it in on herself, a realization that maybe the current version of Alexandra Lloyd isn't so happy with her predecessor in this skin and is just starting to come to see that on her own.

Julia shifts uncomfortably in her chair, mirroring her mother's movements without realizing it. "I don't know. It's not that you're hard to talk to. Sometimes you are, when you don't listen to me and think you know better than me anyway. Sometimes it's just easier not to talk to you."
She takes a sip from her tea but puts it down as it is still too hot to drink. Her eyes are focused down on her mug as she plays with it with both hands and avoids looking directly at Alex. "And I guess I was worried you wouldn't approve. Not that you could stop me even if you tried. But I want you to approve."
May 29, 2019 4:32 pm
"You may not always have wanted to admit to it, Julia, but you are a product of my genetics," Alex responds dryly. "I wouldn't expect anyone could stop you if you had your mind set on something. I'd just warn you that you won't always have your mind set on the right thing... or the best thing."

She holds a hand up to keep Julia from protesting. "I'm not saying that your decision here is that situation, just that I'm learning -- yes, even at my advanced age -- that I'm right far less often than I thought I was."

Leaning forward, she reaches across the table to take Julia's hand. "Look... it won't matter whether I like him or not. Or whether I approve or not. I haven't always been the most attentive mother, I realize that, but I worry about you, and I extrapolate every situation you find yourself in out to the absurd extremes so that I can worry about every contingency that might arise. It's a biological imperative, if nothing else."

Some tension leaves Alex's shoulders, and she fixes her daughter with a fond smile. "But I'll still be proud of you, regardless. You're an adult now, with or without my guidance. I accept that."
