Side RP: Parents

After sending her messages out, Alira goes to the plaza where the small cafe her parents told her to meet them is. When she gets there, her parents are already sitting there. Both of them have a cup of coffee in front of them and they are talking agitatedly.
They don't seem to notice Alira approaching over their conversation
May 23, 2019 8:10 pm
Alira makes sure to cough politely before she gets too close, her parents are very clear on how they feel about eavesdropping, as they are clear on their opinion on most things.

Ahem.
Mother. Father. How good to see you both.

Awkward hugs are exchanged.

I am sorry it has been so long, but I have been busy.

How are you enjoying your assignment here? What I have seen of it looks lovely

"Oh, this island is terrific", Drenala replies. "It is a shame we are only here for such a short time.
"I can't wait to get back to the academy" Cambris then says. "These cadets get worse every year. And they're at their worst here. Two of them snuck out during the night and tried to steal a hover transport. They are currently still under arrest which means a lot of paperwork and organisational matters we have to take care off."
Drenala speaks up again: "Not to mention our own daughter who snuck out a third cadet for some tour around the village for no adequately explained reason. And then the next day she almost stands us up for our lunch appointment. We expected you here much earlier, dear."

I am sorry mother. My other appointment ran a little long. I was meeting with someone about a new placement. I am up for a head of security position, and a possible promotion. It looks like I will be assigned to The Potential.

Alira feels she needs to explain a little of yesterday as well.

Regarding the Cadet you saw me with. I didn't sneak her out, as you put it. Before curfew she, and some of her classmates, were worried that a couple of their friends were going to be late coming back. Once they had a hard time finding them she got worried. I offered to help. I figured it would get done more quickly and more safely.

Why do I let her make me so defensive?

Lisa showed good judgment and a good sense of teamwork. I hope you won't be too hard on her for this.

"So you still want to be a brute, just on another ship? What did we do to deserve this? We raised you to be a scientist, Lira", Drenala says in a dramatic voice. "Can't you leave the violence to those who are less gifted than you?"
May 23, 2019 9:17 pm
I would have thought you raised me to be happy. I am very happy with my job. It is important and keeps people alive and safe.

This same argument. Again. Will they ever see?

If I do my job well, and I do, there is no violence. I am not a brute. No one who puts force first will ever advance in the fleet. They probably won't even graduate. Smart people like you and father weed them out.

Drenala reaches out a hand to touch Alira's "Oh, of course we want you to be happy, dear. It's just, why can't you be happy doing something that makes us happy too?"
Cambris just looks at Alira with a neutral expression. "How long will you be staying on Caspera?", he asks.

Alira takes her mother's hand and smiles. Turning to her father...

I am not 100% sure. I meet the bridge crew of The Potential this evening. They are on shore leave after a first contact. If everything works out, I will be leaving when they do.

She steals herself.

The cadet that I was with last evening, Lisa White, were you serious when you said she was failing? She seemed to have a lot of good characteristics for member of Spacefleet

They look between each other and Cambris speaks up: "She is not doing very well at the moment. She is aiming for a career in command but over the last year her grades have gone down by a lot."
"If she gets her act together, she might be able to pass after all but even if she does, I'm not sure whether command is right for the girl.", Drenala adds. "She is not very good with people."

That's too bad. Maybe meeting some people who have gone through it will inspire her.

A thought occurs to Alira, like if a voice from above spoke directly to her.

I know you both have seen a lot of students and probably can't remember all of them...but do any of these ring a bell?

Alira hands over her tablet with a list of the bridge crew of the Potential.
May 24, 2019 5:32 am
"Dear, you know I never forget any of my students", Drenala says as she takes the tablet and looks at it together with her husband.
After thinking for a moment, the two of you give you some information on how they remember the Potential crew:
"Shawna Cassano, are you sure you want to serve under her? She was a terrible student. Always getting into trouble, never paying attention. She always hung out with this boy, Nic, and the two of them just were a bad influence on each other."
"Oh, and Cass Darcy is on the Potential as well. She was a bit of a loner and was really struggling at the academy at first - never handing in assignments on time, sleeping in and missing classes, she even came to class drunk more than once. She got her act together eventually and graduated. I'm not surprised she's on the same ship as Cassano. Darcy had less charisma than Cassano but I always said they would probably have been friends if they were in the same year."
"I also remember Zephyr Borealis. He was a good kid. Smart and dedicated, sometimes a bit overzealous. He didn't have it easy. His sister was very sick and he often had to take care of her and ended up missing a lot of classes because of that. It didn't stop him from passing with excellent grades, however."
"Max Harris was a sweet kid, always talking of his home. He was laser focused on counseling and psychology and could not care less about engineering or most of the sciences. Somehow, he still managed to graduate. I heard he was on the Cascade."
"Ah, and of course Anatol Belka. He was a good student but not outstanding. We always suspected he was dealing with some illegal substances but we were never able to prove it."
"The other two, Moira Bruce and Alexandra Lloyd must have graduated before we starte dteaching. I do know that Lloyd is a bit infamous for a diplomatic disaster with the Naplicans a few years ago that she was responsible for but I don't remember the details. I'm sure you can find something about it in the database."

Drenala looks at Alira, her face shows disappointment as she hands the tablet back to Alira. "Are you really sure you want to work with these people? They are just not the most professional."

Thank you mother. Yes I am sure. I am sure they have grown out of their cadet ways and into professionals.
Maybe they just need a Vitan to whip them in shape.
OOC:
I think I have covered everything I need to from an RP with the parents. If you have nothing else, we can consider a lot of small talk and catching up goes in this space.
Mom, dad, it was really good catching up. I hope we can get together again before I ship out. Please believe me when I say that I am very happy with where my life is at and where it is going.
OOC:
After hugs and goodbyes we can star wipe to the security office after checking my tablet for messages
